Vying for a place amongst Viridian Vipers was yet another impulsive decision that Cecilia began to mull over. At first, the thought was thrilling – brandishing her wand and casting splendid spells – but now it seemed like nothing more than a distant daydream. Reality struck when she cast flames at her dearest roommate during a disastrous detention. The horror in Milica's eyes haunted her, planting seeds of doubt that began to take root.

Now she faced a terrible predicament – to duel or not to duel? The fickle fox failed to reach a verdict on the matter. Withdrawing her interest did not feel right, but neither did maintaining it. Sulking over spiralling thoughts proved to be fruitless. In lieu, Cecilia sought a different approach and plastered a simple request on the bulletin board: TWO DUELLISTS WANTED, PRETTY PLEASE — each to be compensated with four chocolate frogs.

The promise of a brief sugar rush was hardly any compensation for being stuck by spells. Which is why Cecilia was pleasantly surprised to receive responses from two familiar faces – Livia, a current duellist and Violence, an aspiring duellist. After they expressed interest, she spent several evenings in the library, hunched over books as she familiarised herself with the rules. There was still much to learn, but for now, Cecilia felt certain that she grasped the basics.

“Good afternoon. Thank you again for your time,” Cecilia greeted them with a warm smile. With the formalities out of the way, she moved on to the rules.

“At the count of three, the duel will commence, and it shall end when one of you is knocked out.” She paused, searching their faces for signs of confusion before continuing.

“Remember that potions and physical combat are strictly prohibited. I trust that you both will maintain proper duelling etiquette,” she said sincerely before her smile faded.

“Still, I must inform you that if any rule-breaking occurs, I will intervene and disqualify whoever is responsible,” she explained firmly. Cecilia held some affection for the witches standing before her and wished for neither of them to be hurt. To ensure fairness and their safety, she was determined to remain impartial.

“Please face each other and bow before taking your positions,” she instructed and motioned for them to walk to their respective ends of the piste.

“Wands at the ready,” she called out, glancing at each witch to ensure both were prepared.

“One.”
xxxxxx“Two.”
xxxxxxxxxxxx“Three.”
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx“Begin!”

Any opportunity to prove her magical prowess was one Livia would seize as if it were a chisel and she were digging away at diamond. She dressed for the occasion, clad in a green overcoat, a white blouse and flowing brown trousers. The boots she wore provided that the outfit was easy to move in, and, as always, she had employed a comb of vanity to pull her back into the tightly-twisted ballerina bun she often sported. Her somewhat-trusty wand rested like a loosely-held violin bow in her right hand; she refused to appear too rigid, but needed to have a hold of the weapon to portray that she fully intended to win.

She strode onto the piste with her shoulders back and her posture straight, as if she were a marionette being held by taut strings. Her neutral expression did not portray the anger that had fuelled her wish for victory – in her first (and only, currently) official duel, she had taken nothing but two rounds to knock herself out. Such an embarrassment had been an affront to her beloved cousin and an upperclassman she respected, and she would not let such a thing occur again. Only a cold, clean-cut conquest, clearly won, would secure her self-respect.

Cecilia, though, was a youth she had enjoyed interacting with. She was unable to quite mirror the warmth in Cecilia's gaze when she offered the other Slytherin a close-lipped smile and a small flutter of her free fingers in a wave. Whenever her opponent entered, she would great the unfamiliar girl with a curt nod.

As Cecilia reminded the duo of the dignified decorum of duelling, Livia listened, but spent more of her energy on observing her opponent. Older, perhaps. More experienced, most likely. Better? That would remain to be seen. Cecilia's words went in one ear and out the other as Livia stared at Violence, giving her a blank, observant once-over. Every small movement, every tell, would be catalogued and tucked away for recall once the duel began.

The comment about rule-breaking made Livia's eyes sparkle, the skin at the edges wrinkling slightly, as she recalled the article she had written advocating for the proper use of cheating in duelling strategy. Perhaps Cecilia read the newspaper after all. She then did as Cecilia requested, crossing her wand arm in front of her chest and bowing in Violence's direction before stalking to her end of the piste. Each step was measured, taken on a straight knee with her toes landing first, combining a hunter's finesse with a dancer's grace.

Then, swiftly, she spun about on her heel and faced Violence, levelling her sniper-like stare at the girl. It was with a quick motion that she stepped forward and pointed her wand at the other young witch, a calm – perhaps even cold – and practised smile on her lips. She took a quick breath and let her muscles relax; this was her element, and this time, she would not deign to be defeated.

XX𝕿he morning was chilly. Students in Hogwarts were victim to the bites of the cold, crisp air wafting through the air. Mostly everybody was wearing scarfs or sweaters, if they were near the Ground or the Courtyard. People could be seen blowing on their hands or rubbing their noses to keep it from getting frosted. On the floors above, however, the cold began to subside and hoodies were being carried on arms instead. The castle buzzed with the familiar sound of bells tolling and friends chatting.

It was on such a day that Violence had been roaming the Fourth Floor. She had initially come up there to see if any more instruments had found their homes in the Rehearsal Room and was disappointed to see that their were none. The instruments already present there had been polished and cleaned and that, to Violence, was a source of small relief. Deciding that she would come there soon enough to practice piano, she left the room. She did not have any classes that day, which was surprising but she figured the teachers might have some kind of a meeting. Or maybe things were still just settling from the new batch of students, and the ones that had graduated.

She decided to go in the Duelling Club too. It had not been long since she had signed up for the duelling team for Ravenclaw. Not been long since she had moderated that duel too. That disastrous, intense duel. One would think that it was disastrous or intense because, maybe, the players were casting dangerous spells, or perhaps potions. Maybe someone had been taken to the hospital wing. However, it had been quite the opposite reason. The players were, to put it kindly, rude to each other. The girl had been trying to figure out who the guy was, and the guy had been avoiding that. The entire duration was a huge, chaotic mess in Violence's mind.

A shudder passed through her spine, if she were to participate in a duel, that would be the last thing she would want to experience. Just as she thought that, she read a pamphlet on the bulletin board of the club. Two duellists wanted? This would be the perfect opportunity to practice her skills. She could put to use the various teachings her father had given to her in theory at the Bloodthorn Mansion. She could also make sure she would apply the observed lessons from the duel she had moderated here. And so, she signed up. What's the worst that could happen, right?

So a few days later, she was quite excited, also nervous and jumpy, to finally be able to test her skills. She knew that Cecilia had been the one to put up the notice but she did not who she was participating against. That was good, no emotions and feelings involved. This was something Violence could be good at. The duel wasn't about who the opponent was, anyways. She was solely focused on how well she could do and what she could work on. So that day, she muttered twice the usual amount of motivations to herself in the shower and listed out every spell she could think of that she had learnt in her classes so far. She imagined the hand movements and incantations, reciting them as if she were about to give a test.

About an hour later, clad in a grey hoodie and dark blue jeans, she stepped into the room. She could already spot Cecilia and another girl standing there. She kept her bag down on end of the piste before stepping onto it as Cecilia spoke. An occasional nod here and there to show that she wasn't lost in her thoughts was the only thing that Violence did. One thing sparked up her interest, however, and she frowned as she spoke, "Wait, I thought potions were allowed? I must have misread, then." she gave Cecilia a small smile.

As her and the other girl took their positions on the opposite ends of the piste, she finally got a good look at the opponent. Her face was neutral but she did seem to be staring at Violence a lot. Which was, well, weird. Violence didn't bother to bow, she wanted to get on with the spells and niceties were not her thing. Violence raised her eyebrows at the dramatics the girl was displaying. She wanted to chuckle but settled for a small but demeaning smile instead. Atleast the girl was passionate, right? She huffed as she pointed her wand at the girl. Well, this would be fun.

With wands raised and ready to strike, spells were swiftly hurled across the room.

After a flash of purple, a well-timed charm from Livia struck Violence and forced her legs to move spontaneously. Her energetic kicks and high knees mimicked a cheery folk dance performed at festivals. Though the ill-timed steps would fail to captivate a crowd, the silly sight still amused Cecilia. Her lips twitched slightly as she struggled to stifle a giggle. Childish humour aside, it would be slightly more difficult for Violence to land or dodge a spell after that. However, not all hope was lost.

At the same time, fortune shone upon Livia as a well-cast curse flew right by her. “What a brilliant dodge!” Cecilia exclaimed as her brows rose. Though her fellow snake always seemed remarkable, she did not expect someone so willowy to be that nimble. It was impressive to see Livia stand tall against an older opponent. If this was the sort of resolve required to be a duellist, then the aspiring viper had a long way to go.

Despite the outcome, it was far too early for anyone to feel comfortable or disheartened. Cecilia knew that the tide could turn at any moment. If one did not keep their wits about them, they could easily be swept away. With her chin high and her grin wide, Cecilia stood silently and waited for their next move.

Since her last failure disgruntling attempt at a duel, Livia had spent many hours in her days murmuring incantations underneath her breath, silently repeating wand movements and even practising her focus. Although not entirely entertaining, such an endeavour had proven fruitful; Livia's grip on her wand was certainly more certain than it had been during her official duel. Furthermore, as she cast, she ensured she would keep her gaze on her opponent without sacrificing her own focus. A blip in her cool, calm mindset had been her downfall last time, and it would not occur again.

The incantation fell flatly from her lips, almost whispered into static air, as her right hand arced in front of her. She narrowed her eyes at Violence and watched as purple light flooded her vision. She did not check to see if the spell hit before immediately trying to dodge; from the quick movement, her heartbeat began to crescendo, and she slowly exhaled, pleased to see that the spell – a mimblewimble, apparently – had gone wide, and that her spell had hit.

Her experience against the Ravenclaws had taught her that pettiness and cruelty did not win anyone a glorious laurel. While perhaps other duellists would have thrown taunts at their opponents, Livia stood straight-backed and with a neutral expression on her face, simply content to observe. With a name like Violence, she had thought her opponent would prefer something with a bit more of a punch; this surprise left her intrigued, wondering what would come next.

She did cast a quick glance at Cecilia as she prepared herself to incant again. Her expression would change momentarily as she registered Cecilia's comment about her dodge; her eyebrows lifted, as did the corners of her lips and eyes, and although she would not – could not – beam at the red-haired girl, she hoped the small smile in the midst of a battle would convey her gratitude.

Then, she returned her gaze to Violence, letting her features settle back to practised neutrality. She began to think about potential options for her next move, seeing it almost as a one-person show of chess. She had to think three – perhaps even more – steps ahead if she intended to win this.

XX𝕿his was officially Violence's first duel. It wasn't exactly official since she wasn't duelling under the supervision of a teacher, nor was she playing for Ravenclaw's official team. But this was the first time she was actually duelling somebody. It was nerve-wracking but Violence was determined to give it her best, while also having fun. It was, after all, a duel with no real purpose. She wasn't duelling an enemy nor a friend. It could have been a fun duel. Could. If only her opponent wasn't throwing daggers at her with her gaze. She began thinking, had she come across the girl anywhere? Maybe she had bumped into her in a hallway and hadn't apologized. Was there a purpose to Livia's coldness?

But that couldn't be. Violence had not bumped into anybody other than that time about two weeks ago. And even then, it hadn't been her fault. She was simply standing in front of a classroom, nervous, as one is. The boy had been running in the hallway and had toppled over Violence. And Livia was a year younger to her, so the only time they could have interacted was in the two months and some days into the year. She shrugged, maybe the girl was just not good at socializing, which, if so was the case, Violence could deem acceptable. And the girl had bowed at the start of the duel. So it didn't necessarily mean that there was any sort of rift between the two.

Violence all but shouted the incantation almost exactly at the same time as Livia did. Unfortunately, Livia had been ready to dodge, and Violence's tongue-tying spell hit the wall behind her opponent. Violence, however, had no such luck as the young witch's Tarantallegra hit her legs and she felt the urge to dance flow through her veins till her legs. The awkward movements and Violence failing to stand still was humiliating enough. But this was not the time to be disheartened. She would just have to give it her all and hope for the best.

Of course, the stress of knowing that she won't be able to cast a spell properly now that she was hip-hopping about the place haunted her. She didn't know what her next course of action could be. Cecilia praising her opponent's dodge only further strengthened her resolve to not be demotivated by this. Her opponent had casted a spell and she was facing the effects. This was also a good lesson for her to remember to be prepared for attacks at all times. The opponent would not wait for her to finish casting her own spell and then proceed to cast their spell. Rule 1. of duelling: always be prepared.

Her next course of action would be better. She wouldn't face the same humiliation twice. Content with what she had decided, she looked ahead at the girl. Given, that the way her legs were still moving uncontrollably, she would have looked like quite a clown. Hopefully, Cecilia and Livia both were above judging. A sigh escaped her lips as she looked at Livia, waiting to see what she would do.

Voices overlapped as the witches cried out their incantations in unison, and before Cecilia had time to process the words, dark clouds suddenly rolled overhead. Suddenly, a powerful bolt of lightning shot from the clouds and struck Livia while another missed her. Cecilia winced, curling her fingers as she fought the urge to look away. The sight was far less amusing than an ill-timed dance.

If not for the red flames dancing at the tip of Violence’s wand, Cecilia would have been convinced it was the older witch’s doing. The reality, however, was far worse for Livia – her spell misfired. Though she was fortunate enough to remain standing, she had taken a heavy blow. Despite that, the nimble snake escaped the wrath of Violence’s flames.

Unfortunately for Violence, her spectacular spell did not graze so much as a hair on Livia’s head. If this were not a duel, Cecilia would say it was rather kind of her to provide warmth to her opponent on this chilly evening. Perhaps Violence was still recovering from her dancing fit. Or maybe she was thrown off by the unsettling shift in the air as she locked eyes with Livia. The moment was so brief that Cecilia struggled to tell. However, one thing was certain – Livia had changed the tides once more, albeit not in her favour.

Guilt gnawed at Cecilia. Perhaps her commentary was more of a detrimental distraction than an encouragement. She would fall silent this time, though her brows would furrow as she anxiously waited for the next spell. In all honesty, she did not know if they could hold out for much longer, but knew that she would support them regardless.

“Come on, don’t give up yet,” she murmured, clasping her hands together.

A certain beauty resided in the charged calm before a storm. As a child, when visiting her relatives in the hot, sultry summers of Kutaisi, Livia always enjoyed sitting outside, her hands folded in her lap and her legs crossed at the ankles, when the sky began to darken and the clouds began to swirl. Always, always, a hint of sizzling suspense lingered in the air as the wind picked up and loud booms of thunder echoed from the mountains in the distance. The branches of the cedar trees in the Machavariani orchard swayed as if the arms of a puppeteer were commanding them. Then, a flash, ozone taking the place of the scent of wind and rain. Light bisecting the unfathomable darkness like the bulb of an old camera. Then, wind would roar, and the cycle would begin anew.

Cycles were fine things – predictable, at least, which meant Livia could peel them apart and investigate them as if she were dissecting a newly-discovered creature. Their inner workings did not require too much thought. An updraft here, a downdraft there; it was all the same, just as simple to ascertain as the fact that atria received blood and ventricles expelled the sticky substance. That nature followed the same rules as life and death cloaked the girl in comfort, and she would often lurk beneath thunderstorms until told to return inside.

The energetic dance Violence had been subjected to brought Livia back to the duel at hand. The sight of it intrigued her and reminded her that people's behaviours were not always so easy to pick apart and put back together. That unfortunate certitude substantiated that the correct response in a duel was to observe. Livia tried. For all of her blank stares, though, and all of her musing of storms, she could not have calculated the occurrence that followed.

First: the incantation for an incredulous incendio relinquished itself from Violence's mouth. Livia lifted her eyebrows and gazed at the brightly-coloured, incandescent fire; for a moment, the resplendence of the dancing flames drew her attention far more than the imminent danger they posed. Her emerald eyes locked in on Violence's wand first, and then her opponent's eyes, and after understanding that Violence, too, had turned to the tempestuous splendiferousness of nature, she opined that she could only follow suit and unleash something incontrovertibly enthralling. Her mouth opened, her wand moved, both as if a second thought: 'Tempest.'

Second: the command of the storm was not one she possessed. Like a scene from her childhood, darkness gathered above her, knitting itself into a semblance of a squall. Intrigued, Livia glanced upwards; her curiosity dealt her a bright flash and the electrifying stench of ozone. The spindly bones inside her threatened to snap, snap, snap. Her heart thudded without rhythm within her chest. No later did spots dance within her gaze, a foul mirror of the earlier flames she'd spied from Violence's wand. She let out a shaky, rattling breath as another flash of light seized her vision; this one did not cause her sore skin to burn further. Her eyelids fluttered shut. She inhaled deeply, even the simple motion causing sharp pain to radiate from the movement of her skin. She opened her eyes and let the breath out, trying to ignore the thudding of her heart, the boiling of her frazzled blood within her veins.

The beauty of nature was its rules – how one could always search for and internalise the process, how nature could not truly lie because there was always some underlying mechanism just waiting to be understood. But magic broke the process, snapped it in half like a twig underneath a boot. Like the swirling clouds mauled by blinding white branches of electricity.

As much as it left her aching, the splendour of it left her desiring more flashing lights and thunderstorms.

XX𝕿he moment Violence cried out the spell, a darkness fell over Livia’s head and she jumped back. What? She hadn’t cast that spell, she had cast a rather generic Incendio. Realisation dawned on her- her spell had missed again, this was Livia’s doing. The witch’s Tempest Jinx had misfired and redirected itself towards Livia herself. Dark clouds rolled over Livia as she was struck by a lightning strike. Violence’s eyes widened and she shouted, “Livia, are you okay? Do you need water, or like, do you want to sit down for a minute maybe?”

Goosebumps pricked on Vi’s skin. Watching someone be struck by lightning was not a pretty sight. But as she watched the clouds swirl and lightning strike, a rare peace washed over her face. Her muscles, tight from the duel, loosened. There weren’t many storms back in Lavenham, at most it would be raining for a few hours but never a storm. This was beautiful. If it were up to Vi, she would have made her home somewhere near to the sea. Near water.

As the clouds disappeared from the top of Livia’s head and brightness was restored in the room, Violence stared, her wand up. Her eyes thinned into slits as she observed the way Livia stood, her senses on high alert. Her fingers gripped her wand tighter, as she prepared to cast.

Seafoam eyes quietly watched the startled raven cry out to the willowy witch. but it did naught to disrupt the pace of the duel. Livia boldly called forth another storm, seemingly undeterred by the intense jolt. Impressive, but risky. Fortunately, the gamble paid off. Cecilia inhaled sharply as swift swirls of grey danced above Violence and twisted into a thick, heavy cloud. Visions of Quiberon flashed in her mind as she stood, mesmerised by the threat of downpour.

“How beautiful,” she murmured to none in particular. A small smile briefly tugged at her lips before an unexpected sight drew her attention.

In her periphery, the force of Violence’s spell turned against her and signalled the end of her string of spectacular spells. Pity. Though the blow was not harsh enough to knock the witch off her feet, Cecilia still flinched. She knew that she was not in any immediate danger, yet an involuntary chill ran down her spine. With a steady breath, fingers curled, and nails pressed deep into her palms before she forced an unpleasant memory into the depths of her mind. Now was not the time.

With every incantation, the nature of the duel grew more unpredictable. Her solemn gaze flicked back and forth between the two. It seemed that neither witch would go down without a fight, but one of them would have to fall – eventually.
