Flash considered most of his classes at Hogwarts to be a serious matter, and his grades were meant to be a reflection of his worth as a student going forward. No one had forced him to try to get good grades, in fact there was less than pressure, there was complete lack of investment whatsoever. His family did not need another excellent student for the family name to continue on it’s path of being an impressive pedigree. No one in his family had an unimpressive scholarly career, and most of them continued their education into college and further. If Flash got subpar grades, he would just fade into the background. The other son. The one they don’t talk about. He couldn’t let it happen, he had to shine just as brightly as they had, or even brighter.

In Herbology, however, it was somehow different. It wasn’t a required class, so taking it only added more to Flash’s heavy workload, but it all felt so easy. The dirt on his hands, the delightful fragrance in the air, it all put him at peace. He was thankful he lived on a planet full of plants, he didn’t know if he could keep his sanity without it. Nature never demanded anything of him except that he existed. That was what the class always felt like, just a moment of existing.

The class was working mostly in silence to complete a project that Professor MacTavish had given them. Friends sitting next to each other talked quietly about their day, and others sat back and loafed off while the Professor stepped away, only to hurry back to their work when he came back right away. It was harmonious. Everyone must have been affected by the magic of nature. Flash had always believed in it, what with its profound effect on him. Nature had that effect on everyone, if they stopped a moment to appreciate it.

Flash plugged along on his replanting work, his thoughts taking a break from over-analyzing everything. Absentmindedly, he started whistling, attempting to replicate the call of the blackbirds. Every morning when he woke up, they were always the first to greet him. He heard their dawn song so often he started to attempt some replies here and there. He knew that some people could do that-- imitate birds-- but it was difficult. From time to time when he had nothing on his mind, he would start to go through the songs he knew.

Coming from a family of Green Witches, Herbology was one of her most exciting classes. Often she would immediately write home after class to tell them everything she had learned. It was opening up a whole other world for witchcraft. Technically, Hogwarts was doing that in general but this part was exceptionally exciting. She was always all in during these classes, much to the dismay to others who were concerned about getting a little bit of dirt under their nails.

Everything in this class appealed to her, the smells, the feelings, the process of taking care of the plants, and the sounds. Except for the mandrakes. She hated the mandrakes. There was a sense of peace within this classroom as everyone worked through the task given quietly. She started to meditate as she normally did at home, her hands and mind starting to work together even more cohesively than before.
At first she thought there was a bird in the greenhouse, and her eyes snapped up trying to spot it. Bird watching was something she especially enjoyed in her hometown even though they didn't get many fantastical birds in her very small town in England.

Eventually she realized it wasn't a bird, it was the boy next to her. It was incredibly impressive that he could get that close to the actual bird. "I actually started looking for a bird. I wish I could do that. Maybe I could attract some birds." She looked over at him with a smile, "I'm Willow." People always saw her as a weird nature freak at home, but hopefully she could meet someone who enjoyed it as much as she did. Not just anyone would figure out how to do bird calls.

Flash was caught off guard when the girl beside him started talking, stopping his whistling abruptly. He hadn’t taken much note of the students around him, given that he spent most of his Herbology classes daydreaming. She seemed friendly enough, despite the fact that her compliment was a bit exaggerated. He would need a lot more practice before he could trick a bird, but it must have still been enough to trick a person.

”Miss Willow, I see, it’s nice to meet you.” She wore a bright yellow and black striped tie, a Hufflepuff. ”My name is Flash. I’m no expert, though, I’ve only been trying it out. Sometimes their songs get stuck in my head. Specifically that one, I think it means ‘I’m awake and this is where I live’.”

Flash caught himself talking while still a bit in his daydreams, prattling on about nothing. Still, putting on a front all the time was tiring. He was already in a good mood just by being there, and he didn’t feel like reverting back to his usual state so quickly. He resolved to just relax and not worry about whether he sounded silly or not.

”It’s harder to pick out their voices at midday, though. There are so many birds in this area, and not to mention the owls. Though if I were a bird, I might like living at Hogwarts myself. Maybe I could hide in the greenhouse and chirp at girls to distract them from their work.” Flash put on a cheeky grin, laughing a bit. ”You don’t look like you’re having any trouble though. I hope I didn’t bother you.”

Flash gestured to her work, having already almost finished completely. Even though she had accomplished her task quickly, there was clearly care and effort put into it, as the roots had been harvested and replanted with little to no pruning-- her plant was perfectly healthy and the roots she collected were large and potent-looking. Even though these were plants that a wizard could buy just about anywhere, someone would pay a good price for a harvest as good looking as hers. She must have had a real talent for horticulture.

She was startled when he called her Miss, something that the professors do but normally not her peers around her. "You can just call me Willow, no need for the Miss! Unless that's something that you prefer to say." She continued her work as she listened to him talk, she enjoyed listening to people talk about things they were interested in or passionate about. She giggled at his comment about birds hiding in the greenhouse to serve as a distraction. "Birds in here would only make this class more fun than it already is." She was working on replanting her last one, "You're right, I am fully in the mode. At home we do a lot of gardening of almost every non-magical plant that you can name. It's not that hard to transfer those skills to this. I could probably do it in my sleep, so you definitely didn't bother me, you just provided a nice soundtrack." She finished with her last plant and wiped her hands on the light brown coat she was wearing for the class.

She finally looked up from what she was doing and looked around, realizing that she was way ahead of everyone else. A blush spread across her cheeks, wondering if she should've slowed down to try not to seem like such a try-hard. She wanted to question if she was finished because she skipped steps, or messed up, but if there was anything she was confident in it was these skills. "This is the one class I've felt like I have a handle on. The other classes have been a tad rough for me." She turned to face Flash for the first time, realizing that he's a Slytherin. "Although, I gotta say your plants look nice as well. At least you're not afraid to get in there unlike some of the people in the class." She spotted a couple of people refusing to put their hands in the dirt, resulting in the plants roots being exposed since they weren't probably covered and shook her head. "Hopefully plants that don't get the right treatment get fixed so they're not fated to die." She slowly started to pack up all of her tools and clean up her station as she talked.

Flash was taken in as Willow talked. She was very easy to listen to, she had confidence in her ability and a sense of pride in her work. He could really admire that in a person, it wasn’t something he saw very much in people his age. Flash couldn’t stand when people talked without saying anything at all, merely filling the air out of politeness. Willow wasn’t like that, but Flash wasn’t used to being talked to so… familiarly.

He wondered if his silly comments earlier had made him out to be a more relatable, easy-going person than he really was. If she would have known what he was really like, she probably wouldn’t have talked to him so casually. Even though that may have been true, he could honestly relate to her. Getting one’s hands dirty was a sign of no hesitation, and of committing completely. It was the sign of a hard worker.

”You know, I think after class today I’ll ask Professor MacTavish about those plants. If he agrees, I wouldn’t mind staying late to fix them myself.” Not having anywhere in particular to be, it didn’t seem like any kind of imposition. It would help him keep his mind off things for a little while longer. He would stay there all day if he could, but he could only make so many excuses for himself before they ran out.

As nice as it was to learn Herbology, it wasn’t something he had the leisure to explore. Not that he had anything against herbalists, but it wasn’t exactly a career that a parent would brag about. When he thought about what Willow said-- gardening with her family, with all kinds of species of plants-- he could have envied her. It seemed so idyllic, like out of a fantasy book. Instead, he had been surrounded by horses. Expensive horses that he had to care for, but could never ride. Waitstaff that were sworn to quiet reverence under threat of firing. Brothers, sisters, and a father who were never home. Only the constant screams of an annoying baby.

He wasn’t sure when his memories had turned so bitter. He was always told he should appreciate what he had, but it had left a sour taste in his mouth. He couldn’t explain why, but it reminded him of what he said before. Growing up he liked to imagine turning into a bird and flying out into the wild, never to return to civilization. Eventually he grew out of that ridiculous thought.

”I fear I need the distraction anyway.” Flash continued, his glum mood apparent in his voice.

The idea of staying longer in this greenhouse delighted her. "Can you imagine just spending all day in here? Maybe not even doing work, but just reading a book in the corner?" She sighed in contentment, "I feel like Hogwarts is quite dark, they could do with less floating candles and more plants around the castle." She started to fiddle with the plants she had already planted, making sure to drain the extra water that had come out of the bottom now that they had had time to let the water filter through. She glanced over at Flash, he seemed upset. Was it something she had said? She had slowly come to find out that some people had a distaste for muggles, so maybe she revealed that too soon. She should've taken more time before info dumping about her life at home. They had just met after all.

She started to rock back and forth on her heels, not having much else to do in class today. She remembered her journal that she had brought to class. It had a green leather cover, it was obviously worn and had dirt and water stains all over it and throughout the pages. She flipped open to a blank page and took out a quill and started sketching what the plant looked like. On the page before this was a drawing of the mandrake plant, with a big frown face in the corner.

"Distractions can be nice. I feel they are few and far between here. Sometimes I miss my school back home, where once I went home I was free to really do whatever I want. I feel like I can't do that here. But the greenhouse really does help make you forget everything wrong in the world, doesn't it?" She looked over at him, with a small smile. "You seem like you have something on your mind. You don't have to tell me, but I'm sure the plants will listen if you wanted to talk about it." Often at home she would spend her time in the grass venting her problems out into the universe of the lovely plants that surrounded her. They seemed to respond to her with the swaying in the wind, and she would generally find the answer after talking it out. She reached out and touched a couple of the leaves before going to draw the texture on her page, "I have found them to be great listeners."

Flash wasn’t sure what he should say. At his schools in the past, his discomfort was always seen as entitled complaining. He couldn’t even argue with them, he didn’t know what the feeling was. If Willow learned he was a rich kid with a loving, supportive family, wouldn’t she just laugh in his face? Besides that, he had nothing to say about it. He didn’t need a better family, or some kind of moral support. The path was clear enough-- he just had to continue to excel and become someone remarkable. Talking about it wasn’t going to change anything about that.

Despite that being true, he wished he could trust Willow enough to say it. When I feel lonely like this, I think it would be better to not have been born at all. He wondered if the plants could hear him, even if he was just saying it to himself. How could he be lonely anyway, when he was making so many friends at Hogwarts. It was a pointless thought.

”Hmm… on my mind... I was thinking about what you said about the castle. I feel much the same. I wonder…” Flash dipped into his things and quickly found what he was looking for-- a small vial, about as big as a segment of a pinky finger, filled with an auburn liquid. He squished it around as he held it. ”This is my own concoction, it’s meant to smell like a bed of flowers.”

Flash placed it beside her on the workbench as to not interrupt her sketching and note taking. ”It helps to make the rest of the castle a bit more colorful. Oh-- it’s a perfume. My sister taught me how to make them.”

Willow didn't think that was actually what was bothering him. He seemed too deep in thought and concerned before to have been thinking about how Hogwarts needs some house plants. But she wouldn't push the subject. She always tried to be a healer of others growing up in her town, before she realized that healing wasn't always possible or necessary. Sometimes you needed a distraction, like someone whistling a blackbird song. She stood up from taking her notes as he put down the vial. "Your sister knows how to make perfume? That's really cool!" She picked it up and uncorked it slightly just to smell it, before returning the cap and placing it back down. "That smell makes it feel as if I'm standing in a florist's shop." She smiled contentedly, closing up her book as she finished the notes she was working on.

"Do you just have a sister? Or do you have multiple siblings? I've always wondered what it's like to have siblings. I grew up an only child with my parents and my grandma. I never really had someone my age to play with, but with siblings that's almost guaranteed isn't it?" She leaned back on the table with her head in her hands, dreaming about what it'd be like to have an older sibling specifically.

She was bullied extensively growing up, but maybe if she had siblings growing up that wouldn't have been the case. She would've had a protection system. Her parents still don't know about how she was treated in school. She didn't want them to worry about her all that much, especially her mom who was a stay-at-home mom. Willow assumed they had far too much to worry about because adults probably had other responsibilities. She didn't want there to be two sad people in the greenhouse though so she tried to keep the smile on her face as much as possible.

Flash returned to his work as he talked, not having much left to do himself besides tucking the last plant into its bed of soil. There was a good deal of time left in the class, so he had to reason to rush. He grimaced a bit when Willow asked him about his siblings, particularly about friends their own age.

”I have two older brothers, my sister, and a younger brother.” Flash stated it like the answer to a question on a test. ”When I was born, the oldest had moved out already. The next was in Hogwarts most of the time. My sister, Marius, was the only one who was around, and she…”

Flash paused, not wanting to speak ill of his well-intentioned sister. Not only that, but the time that he was born was right as she was discovering she was a squib. She turned 11 that year, and despite thinking some random happenings around her might have been caused by her magic, no letter ever arrived. He always knew her as a serious person, who kept her emotions very guarded, but she nevertheless taught him much of what he knew about carrying himself with dignity.

”Well, she was much older than me, eleven years apart. It was more like another parent than it was a playmate. I gave her a lot of trouble when I was little. I can relate now, my little brother drives me crazy.” Flash tried to wipe his bangs out of his eyes, but just ended up getting dirt on his forehead. ”To be honest, I spent as much time alone as I could. During family gatherings, with all that noise…”

He worried he was explaining a bit too much. It was fine to share a few easy, obvious details, like how big his family was, but his opinions could influence that image. His family name was something he had to protect and defend, even if he didn’t like it. It was Marius, after all, whose prosperity depended on that name.

”... But that’s all to say, I think I would have gladly switched with you. Being an only child sounds a lot more attractive in my eyes. I suppose it’s best that you can’t choose your birth. It seems like no matter what, you just want what you don’t have.”

She listened to him talk, idly letting her fingers trace the marks in the tables that have probably been there for a few years. She'd have to take her time next time so she wasn't left to stand around. She should've spent more time with the plants any way and shown them a bit more love. She looked over and stifled a small giggle when she saw the dirt on his forehead. "If you need a hair clip or hair tie I have a ton in my bag at all times. You never know when you'll need your hair out of your face." She took a few seconds to think about everything he had said.

What he said was kind of true, that people always want a different life than they grew up with. She almost felt that, but without growing up as the type of witch she was she would never be this good at herbology. Or made so many friends that were helping her out along this path. "I feel like we would've been fun dirt gremlin siblings." She looked over at him and smiled, "I don't know if I would trade how I grew up though. It did have it's downfalls and negatives, there's a lot of things I wish didn't happen. I wish I wasn't bullied, I wish I had siblings, maybe I wish I grew up in this kind of magic family. But at the same time, I don't. Those things have contributed to the way I am and I quite like the way I am. My connection with nature, I think I'm pretty tough, I am naive I will admit that." She turned to look out of the windows of the greenhouse. "I think it's important to acknowledge what we would change, but also what we would keep as well. I'm sure there would be some aspects of your life that you would miss if you switched. I never had family gatherings, never a big Christmas dinner with everyone gathered around a huge table. It was just the four of us. But, I feel like that was enough." She shrugged, "Perspective is everything I suppose." She sighed. One thing she couldn't get over here was how easy it was to see the sky all the way out here, especially the night sky with all of the stars. There was no light pollution from the cities nearby. It was beautiful, and she tried to snag the chance to stare out a window whenever she could. That was one thing she wouldn't trade.
