NOVALIE MOON!

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

When Novalie spotted one of her Banana friends, Percival @Percival Rocier, her grin somehow managed to grow even wider.
She waved him over excitedly - because the more friends gathered, the merrier! And besides, the girl was sure he’d feel comfortable around everyone. Her friends were, after all, the kindest people she knew.
Just as she stopped waving, her attention was pulled back to the boy standing next to her, who soon introduced himself as 'Fire'. @Fire Davies
“You’ve got to be kidding!”, Novalie stared at him, wide-eyed (though probably not visible through her costume), her voice revealing pure fascination, “Fire?! What a sick name! Oh my god, I wanna be called Fire so bad too now!”
When he asked how she and Meiyu @Meiyu Xiang had come to know each other, the Ravenclaw didn’t hesitate for even a second before practically melting into admiration,
“Yes! So, like, we’ve met a bunch of times before, since we’re in the same year and all, right? But one day she-”, her family “-invited me-”, she had invited herself “- to her New Year’s party! And let me tell you, it was, like, the most fancy, stunning, breathtaking party I’ve ever been to! There was, you know, this huge buffet, and classical music, and- and- and-”
If Novalie had been a computer, she would’ve overheated already. She spoke alarmingly fast, hopping on her toes restlessly,
“- and she looked so good, you have no idea! Not that Meiyu could ever look bad, she’s absolutely ravishing, don’t you agree? Her hugs are so warm, and the way she talks - she’s even a Duellist! Did you know that?! How could I not want to be her friend?! She’s just the best, really.”
Her starry-eyed gaze drifted toward the Gryffindor girl in question, but when Meiyu mentioned that Fire wasn’t her friend and that her own brother had decided not to spend time with her today, Novalie gasped, completely scandalized,
“What?? Meiyu, if I were your sister, I’d never miss a chance to hang out with you! Actually, I’d probably try to be like you.”
There was a sincerity in her tone that most likely would leave no doubt she meant every word, blissfully ignoring Meiyu’s insult towards her brother and her remarks about Ravenclaw tendencies.

Suddenly -
“RASENGAAAAN!”

Novalie jumped slightly as Fire was abruptly ambushed! She spun around just in time to see none other than Ice Lord himself - or rather, Naruto! @Aodhan Shaw
Meiyu, sadly, had taken the opportunity to slip away and Novalie instantly made a note to find her later to give her the birthday present she'd hidden beneath her banana costume.
Beaming however, the redhead turned back to greet her friend, words of admiration already rushing to the tip of her tongue, when Fire suddenly threw up an arm as if to cast a wall between them, calling Aodhan 'Nerd-uto' and saying something about making mistakes.
What was that about?
Novalie tilted her head inside her banana hood, blinking in visible confusion before concluding that it must be some kind of friendly rivalry or judging by Fire’s tone of voice ... jealousy?
Which, honestly, would be fair. She heard of celebrities having not only tons of fans, but also quite the amount of haters. And since Aodhan was practically a superstar, a Quidditch legend and the funniest boy she knew, it wasn’t surprising that some people struggled to handle his presence.
So, doing what she thought would definitely help, Novalie gently rested a hand on Fire’s shoulder and said earnestly,
“No need to be jealous of Aodhan, Fire. He might be the coolest boy around, but I’m sure you’ve got great traits too! You’re a Co-Host, so, like, you probably have, uh .. a really good eye for details or something, right?”
She meant it with the best intentions.

Soon, more Banana members joined them, and by their voices Novalie recognized Alliasta @Alliasta Holista and Joseph. @Joseph Sims
“Heck yeah!”, she cheered, instantly agreeing with Joseph’s enthusiasm for Alliasta’s idea to call themselves the Banana Gang. The name sounded oddly intimidating, which was perfect for their Banana Gangster theme.
When Joseph then suggested they parade around showing their banana supremacy by yelling things like 'I love bananas!' and 'Bananas for life!', the Metamorph was instantly all in.
“Yes! Yes!”, she jumped excitedly, immediately pulling out her wand and pointing it at one of the decorative spiderwebs,
“Let’s show them our Banana Power! Incendio!”

Right after casting the spell, something small brushed against her leg. Looking down, Novalie spotted a sleek black cat sniffing curiously at her costume. @Colin McCoire 's cat
“Oh!”, the redhead breathed softly, kneeling down with delight.
The cat’s fur shimmered so elegantly, reminding her of her spider pet's fur.
“Hello there, little Voidling.”,she cooed, gently reaching out to pet it, "Who are you?"

The bravery charm Robin had cast on herself instantly set into action, squaring her shoulders and feeling a bit more prepared to take on the daunting task of sticking out this event. She'd already gathered some critical information by watching these students – some details more interesting than others. For example, her eyes kept wandering to a secluded pair - heads tilted, murmured voices. She couldn't be sure if the two were plotting something or were more emotionally involved... romantically. Robin didn't have any particularly strong feelings about either possibility, but certainly wanted in on the plan if they were devising any mischievous events for the evening. She hoped that if the two were romantically involved, they would take their strange interactions somewhere she wasn't oddly tempted to stare. Another observation she'd made included a somewhat larger group of witches and wizards – they were all posing for a picture taken by a camera that would surely be put into a developing solution. One of the students looked a little more put-out than the others; he nervously clung to the edge of the group, periodically glancing over at his peers, who were all exchanging quips and jokes like their lives depended on it. Robin could sympathize with the boy. The only difference between their off-putting demeanors was that Robin was not interested in being a part of a larger group. Not because she thought she was any better – no, she certainly wasn't – but because the act of sitting back and internalizing always seemed more beneficial in the long run; one could never underestimate the power of good intel. Robin was so locked in on her observations that she didn't notice the girl who had slowly been wandering closer and closer to her until she was right in front of her. She would've jumped if she hadn't been under the influence of the bravery charm, settling her previously racing heart.

"I don't suppose you're someone I know under there?" The girl had said, drawing Robin's attention to her face. The girl had long, dark hair shrouded by a red hood and cape and a white dress underneath. Robin's first thought was that the girl had quite the forgettable face – one that her eyes could have passed over multiple times that night without realizing it was the same one. Her second thought was that the girl's large brown eyes somewhat resembled her own – large, brown, and full of a whimsical sense of joy that only someone with a head full of dreams could achieve. Robin stared blankly at the girl, the only part of her body moving being her eyeballs to survey her in full.

"Interesting costume," she had continued, a growing smile and voice genuine and full of the kind of bravery that didn't need a spell to acquire. Robin was confused and more than a little suspicious of the girl's intentions. Robin had no idea who she was. She didn't look familiar. Maybe a first year from another house? If Robin had to guess, it would be Gryffindor. Other than her friend Sinclair, who tended to be rather antisocial, the Gryffindors seemed to be an extroverted bunch. She was dressed as what Robin assumed to be Little Red Riding Hood – someone else familiar with the muggle world and their stories, it seemed.

"Thanks," Robin said flatly, her Welsh accent prominent, her lips hidden behind the sheet obscuring her face. "Uh, who're you?"

Instantly realizing how she sounded, Robin cleared her throat and tried again. "I mean you too. Little Red, yeah? I almost came as a wolf. Maybe I could've been your big bad, huh?" She finished with a chuckle.

If Robin had been paying more attention, she would have noticed her new friend from the duelling team, Adeline, approaching with a playful, cheeky grin on her face. She had been contemplating this strange new face when the girl struck with a succinct, "boo!"

Despite having cast the bravery charm on herself, Robin was startled out of her whirling thoughts regarding the unfamiliar student in front of her and turned to her classmate with a face of feigned indignance – or at least as best as she could replicate as a sheeted ghost. She supposed she looked a bit like the leaning tower of Pisa, rimrod straight and top-half angled comically.

"I truly don't know how you managed to startle me after I just cast a bravery charm on myself," She voiced, laughing aloud for the first time since walking in the room. "Especially when you look so dashing!" She finished, smiling at the ensemble the girl had prepared for the day. She was obviously some kind of bird, that was to be obvious. The only bird Robin was intimately familiar with was precisely that - a robin. She wore a dress that clearly had been carefully made, considering the style - feather-like and patch-worked, a necklace of trinkets, and a birdlike visage to match, the maquillage perfect for the event. "What kind of bird are you?" She asked inquisitively, eyes flickering back to the other student with an awkward glance, unsure exactly how to navigate this stranger's kindness and a new, precarious friendship.

Rosaline glanced up at the ceiling, counting how many webs were hanging on top of them. Countless, this was her result. She wondered where the spiders came from; would they come from the Forbidden Forest? Tilting her head back and thinking about it for a moment, she let go of the question and started observing the room again. More people arrived, with their different costumes. She was surprised by how many people dressed as Muggle pop culture references. For example, there was a girl dressed as Batman, and then a pair of students put on the White Chicks costumes. She chuckled at the memory of the movie; it was hilarious.

There were some other types of costumes, such as a girl wore an elegant white lace layered gown, with the famous Dior blood drop pearl necklace. She was in awe of the style choice; it was just stunning. And of course, there were so many bananas in the room, she had already lost count of them. Though this event was named ‘Dress for the Dead’, she thought everyone’s costumes weren’t actually that scary; it was still very amusing seeing all the people gathered together, clothed in various outfits. She saw a girl wearing an Enid costume, and by her side was a Wednesday. There was a vague familiarity. She finally recognized it might be Cecilia, but she couldn’t recognize her at first because of the wig she wore. They went in another direction. She also noticed Camille went to another corner in the part; she supposed she should go say hi later. Rosaline’s mind floated to another thought, wondering who would win the contest. She didn’t desire to win at all, yet she was curious who would be the winner. The costumes were all so dissimiliar.

The sound of Leo’s footsteps, and a gentle tap pulled her out of her own world. He walked straight to her, without hesitation. The blonde hair and blue eyes made him look so different. The outfit suited him very well, too, almost like he really came from the film. Her whole face lit up when she saw him. And there was the famous line. “There you are, sweetheart. Sorry, I’m late.” Rosaline just stared for a moment, face flushing, before she could say a word. She was the shy and flustered Sophie now. “Hello, Mr. Wizard. You look very handsome today, just like Howl,” she composed herself and finally opened her mouth to say the words. The line Leo said was from the film, when Sophie and Howl first met.

Her shyness dissipated after Leo laughed. While her face was still flushing, she met his gaze, wondering if he had used his ability to change his hair and eye color. Leaning over, she whispered in Leo’s ear because she didn’t want others to know the secret between them, “Did you use your power today? We have the same eye color now, and I love that.” She chuckled and went back to her position. Hearing Leo’s compliment, the young Everhart couldn’t help but show a wide grin. She turned around and let the dress flutter with a playful expression. “I like it too.” About the remark on her hair, she replied, “I don’t know about the grey hair, but I indeed love to try different styles. And I like you in blonde. It was very refreshing and it suits you.” She smiled and felt a bit shy to give the compliment. Leo mentioned the competition, her eyes sparkled, and she said, “I’m starting to like all the bananas, especially. I truly wonder who would win. Do you think it could be us? But I think probably most people here don’t know the Ghibli movies.”

Rosaline spotted two girls walking toward them when she and Leo chatted. One of them was Eonaria, the girl she had met before, whom she had prepared with and helped each other for the Autumn Ball. She could be sure she hadn’t talked to another blonde girl before, but she had seen her in some classes before. Eonaria wore a beautiful emerald and white dress with a delicate bowtie headpiece. The other girl wore a colorful dress that included the darker green and the fandango shade. She supposed the costume was a flower-related theme because the girl literally looked like a pretty flower.

She smiled as they approached. The girl introduced herself and complimented her dress. Rosaline replied with a warm smile because she could see the girl was rather nervous at the moment, “Hello Ally and Eonaria! It’s a pleasure to meet you both here. I’m Rosaline, and this is Leo.” She introduced Leo to them as she continued, “Thank you so much. I think your costume is very original and pretty.” Her expression turned confused when she heard ‘the wagon days’. She tilted her head to think about that for a second. Then she realized Ally probably meant something like the Victorian era. She decided to encourage the girl a bit and said, “Yes, the costume does kind of come from the wagon days.” Though the world in the movie was a little different from that.

Her eyes widened a little as she heard Ally apologize; she couldn’t think of anything Ally should be sorry for. Rosaline quickly consoled her with a warm smile, “Oh! No such thing. You don’t need to apologize at all. I love what you said, it’s really nice of you.” Hoping Ally would feel better soon, she thought the girl was very genuine.
After the talk with Ally, Eonaria greeted her. She asked if Rosaline still remembered her. Rosaline chuckled, “Of course! I can’t thank you enough for helping me with the makeup. It was so much fun to prepare together that day.” Tucking a strand of her hair, she continued, “Thanks for the compliment. I love your dress too, especially all these beautiful bow ties, they are so pretty! And, the green definitely suits you.”

"Right?" Colin said enthusiastically. "We're spooky raven twins! Well, I reckon ravens and plague healers both can be harbingers of doom and death, right? Hm. Ye know lass, nothing much chaotic has happened tonight! I've been watching the floor, ye know? And all walls! And the ceiling!"

The black clad harbinger of joyful chaos silently observed the space.

“Oh! Hello there, little Voidling”, a girl softly cooed. The voice came from the vicinity of the odd looking bright yellow starfish wearing striped pyjamas. "Who are you?" Colin smiled. He knew very well who the long and lanky black cat was.

He nudged Emily. "Ye know lass, Greebo has been making the rounds of the event for a while now. I'm sure he's in hopes of a kitty treat of some cuddles. He was such a sweet boy! I just hope he doesn't get too close to Kim! Poor lad. Allergic to cats. Who ever heard of a wizard allergic to cats? Well, that's Kim!"

"Mrrr owwow ow?" Greebo asked the girl. Clearly, she was giving Greebo attention, so he would do his best to earn some pats! Colin observed. Greebo rubbed his head against the girl's pyjama legs as she crouched down. The girl reached out and began petting Greebo's head and back.

"Hrrr-ow![/i]" Clearly this action from the human met with approval. "Lucky little blighter. I mean! I know how nice a good ear scritching feels! Look at Greebo all rubbing his head against her pyjama legs!" Colin laughed merrily. The girl seemed delighted with Greebo's reaction! The cat lifted up his head and closed his icy blue eyes, purring loudly, when she rubbed the bridge of his nose. Colin knew what was coming next! He only hoped the girl had a kitty brush!

Greebo rubbed his sides against her legs contentedly, then sprawled out on the floor. "Auw?" asked the cat. Colin smirked. "I hope she's got a fur brush somewhere in that starfish costume of hers! But, with Greebo, if you don't have a brush, kitty treats will also be fine! He turned back to watch Emily.

She really did look beautiful in her costume! Colin's heart began to thump harder. "Oh! The walls!" He had almost forgotten what he was on about! Of course, Emily had that effect on him! "Only, it's just that, so far tonight, nothing actually boding has happened. I find that highly sus. Not one single hag doll or troll or rampaging mad creature of any kind has appeared!"

He put his arm around Emmi so they could stroll around the room and check some of the other creative costumes. "Oo look Emmi! . Isn't that Avery the Dementor? That's actually pretty scary! Oh! And a dark queen! Zombie girl --- aww, that one's cute! And there --- WHOA! Look there!" Colin turned them about a hundred and eighty degrees! "Wait! There's another one of those banana starfish wearing pyjamas! There's two of them!"

After a little while, Colin worked up enough courage to ask Emily an important question. His voice was quite low, not much more than a whisper. He often did this when asking his beloved Hufflepuff a Very Important Question! "Emmi," be began softly. It wasn't like he was going to ask her to be his girlfriend or anything! Mind you, Colin certainly had a Brilliant and Cunning Plan for that moment, and he reckoned his voice would probably end up a dead quiet whisper, with Emmi saying what? What was that Colin?? every couple of words!

Even so, this question was important to Colin. Of course, AngelFyre knew he was totally smitten by Emily Shephard! And Cursa and Casey and Scout knew as well. And obviously Liam knew. That lad had such a gift for reading Colin's emotional states! But he hadn't yet told any of his other friends. Not Kim, nor Bailey, nor anyone on the Basilisks. Not Keith, not Tes. Pfft! Certainly not those super annoying twins they were always running in to! Though mind you, he really did grow in respect for Mey and Jun after the ball. He was quite surprised that they'd done so well in the Drowned Palace!

"Um."

Colin leaned in to whisper to Emmi: "C-Can I introduce you to one of me friends?"

Leo laughed after hearing her reply to his greeting, the famous line Howl says to Sophie, letting his expression calmly change to a soft smile. “Why thank you, miss,” He added playfully and gave a small bow to her before straightening back up and looking around the room. While he didn’t get a lot of the references, he knew a couple of them and even the ones he didn’t he still looked at in awe at how well everyone pulled together their costumes. Halloween really was such an interesting and fun holiday for everyone.

As he turned back around to look at Rosaline, he realized she was leaning closer to his ear to whisper something to him so he leaned in to listen. “Ah~” Leo chuckled softly, he figured she would guess he used his abilities tonight to complete the costume with the hair and eyes look. It was a fun little secret kept between the two of them. Although, he hoped he would someday get the courage to tell their other friends as well. “Yes, wearing a costume was a nice excuse to practice using it without anyone asking questions about it.” He admitted to her, nodding as he looked into her eyes as well after her comment about them being the same color now. Leo was happy to hear the compliment from her, especially because he was feeling nervous stepping into the room in a completely different look than his usual style for this costume. Maybe he would try out different hair and eye colors sometime to play around with it. But for today, he was the mysterious wizard Howl.

When Rosa mentioned the bananas Leo couldn’t help but chuckle and agree, “There really is a lot of them in here, I guess I missed the memo on wearing a banana costume.” He jokingly said, looking at Rosa again. “I’m sure some might recognize it, who knows?” As he said that two girls had come up to speak to Rosaline, neither of whom Leo recognized so he wasn’t sure if he had seen them in classes or not before. Rosa greeted the one and introduced herself to the other, taking a moment to introduce Leo to them as well. He gave a small smile and waved to the two girls, “Hi, nice to meet you both.” Looking at their outfits, Leo wasn’t sure what they were supposed to be or if it was a reference to a character he didn’t know so he didn’t say much to the two strangers.

As the three girls were talking, Leo decided to glance around and check out the other costumes while he also did his best to keep his ears open and listen to the conversation so he wouldn’t miss anything. He did spot a familiar pair across the room, Cecilia and Milica. He recognized Milica but was surprised by his friend’s style for the evening, chuckling softly to himself. He would have gone over to say hi to them but didn’t want to interrupt and instead turned to join the conversation again. “I wonder win they will announce the winners?” He mentioned as he realized everyone was probably waiting to see who won.

"Well, actually!" Emily lit up like Colin had activated something in her... Which he did! Her inner archive of knowledge! "Ravens were pretty well known to be messengers from the realm of the afterlife and the spiritual across many cultures. Like in Greek mythology, ravens were messengers for the Apollo, God of Prophecy." So Colin's playful jab of Emily and himself being a harbinger of death seemed teasingly spot on!

They watched Greebo pester a younger student in a bizarrely unique banana costume. Emily envied her. If anyone was meant to lavish Greebo with cuddles and coos, it should've been Emily. She and Greebo both put up with Colin's antics on near enough a daily basis. That should've made the Huffie and the cat tight now! Ah well... Maybe later Emily could steal him away and snug him for a while after the dress-up event.

Colin escorted Emily around the room, pointing out other students and their fantastic outfits. The cutie patootie student Avery made a terrifyingly good dementor. And then there was another banana-looking outfit! Was that what was "in" for this year's Halloween trends?

Colin then mentioned how he was patrolling the room for suspicious surprises and things that go bump in the night. Emily smiled. She liked that about Colin, that sense of action and the protective instincts he possessed. She laughed and lightly bumped her elbow into his side on his comment on how Hogwarts's autumn term seemed particularly tame this year.

"It's hardly anything sus, my friend. If anything, we should rejoice! No one has gone missing, gotten hurt, or caused a fire around the grounds. While I know you've seen enough calamity at Hogwarts to maybe be numb to happenings like that at this point, but remember... Hogwarts is meant to be a safe place of learning, no matter how much "good" or "evil" is out there in the wider world."

After two years of disasters at Hogwarts and its social events, Emily was hoping third time was the charm. So far, all seemed good. Despite Colin's in-tuned anticipation for things to go wrong, Emily was relishing in the silence of a Hogwarts event just following the way it was meant to be carried out from the start... Without a carefully planned attempt to spitefully target students mixed in.

Colin suddenly stopped and Emily was swivelled round to face him, locked in his pond-scum eyes like reacquainting herself with an old but comforting reflection. He leaned in close, talking low into her ear that sent a shy shiver through her spine.

"C-Can I introduce you to one of me friends?"

"Oh! Emily was quite surprised at the offer. With Emily being a bit younger than Colin, she still found it a wonder - as much as it was equally a gracious gift - that he would hang out with her. Emily was curious to see if his friends would want to spend time with someone two years below their familiar circle of peers. "Are you sure, Colin? Would they mind? I don't want to seem like I'm imposing..."

But Colin's resolute look told Emily she wouldn't be winning this one. She relented with a knowing smile and nodded. "Okay, okay... Lead the way, my friend. Who would you have me meet?"

Harvey flashed Camille a very pumpkin-y side eye as the lad seemed overly concerned with what he might say in front of others. His task was to look after him, not publicly humiliate him. Despite his scheming nature, Harvey very much wanted to fulfill this contract and what did Camille have to be afraid of anyways? A bedwetter? Afraid of the dark? He was literally a perfect male specimen with a decent amount of magical talent. A little hiccup with the beginning of school and now he was paranoid about Harvey spreading rumors? He should see an ally here, regardless if it was payment driven or not, but this was going to be like splitting hairs with this one.

Harvey ignored the sour look he received from Camille when he took him by the elbow. A bit of mingling would be good for the young Frenchman. A bit of networking at social events like this could make you. It was moments like this to be seen, to be a part of the story. "That would be nice, maybe later." A bit of a drink would be rather pleasant. Not that Harvey liked anything too hard. The idea of fire whiskey made his toes curl, but a little nimble of fine brandy provided a very welcoming bit of warmth and relaxation. His grandfather would sneak him some during dinner parties if he was on his best behavior. No matter now as they approached a group of students.

"I assume so." Harvey whispered through his pumpkin mouth as they looked over a particular boy's costume. Why else would he be all waxy? He followed Camille as they inserted themselves into the ongoing conversation. You could wait for the perfect moment to join one or you could just make the moment yourself. "The Headmaster?..." Harvey was just beginning to question the costume when Camille followed with quite the insult. Now, Harvey had no love or loyalty to Hogwarts staff. Some he liked more than others, but they were simply just performing a job. He hadn't thought much about whether the school was run well or not. It was Hogwarts, a very prestigious school was it not?

"Yes, tell us, Camille. Why don't you have love for Headmaster Lear?" While the topic was unexpected, perhaps controversial, it was at least stimulating. The girl they had approached was quick to question as well and maybe this could be their in. Mature, sophisticated conversation to impress their peers.

Aleks lowered his arms when Aiden sighed and stared at him so intently that, for a heartbeat, he wasn’t sure whether that stare was meant for him or his costume. “Almost,” Aiden began, and Aleks’s curiosity flickered. At least it was clear now that it wasn’t about the wax peeling itself from his forehead. He could almost feel it trying to make a run for it, seized by the paranoid fear of bumping into the Headmaster himself.

Then followed the answer from the other Slytherin. Aiden was dressed as a Muggle cop. The word actually meant something to Aleks! His mother had once told him they were the Muggle equivalent of Aurors, and that he shouldn’t linger suspiciously around their cars. It would practically count as an invitation to interrogate him. His thoughts stuck to his eyes as he watched the black baton. Aiden let it glide through the air like a fat flying squirrel. Even when it disappeared into his belt, Aleks kept watch. The candlelight seemed to glint faintly against its surface. Aleks grinned. “Cool! So theoretically you could walk around pretending to scare the kids. Fits Halloween perfectly.”

A moment later, his best friend crossed his arms over the chest. It wrinkled the blue costume. Somehow Aleks felt almost caught by it. As though the strange equipment were a cheat sheet dropping from his sleeve. He lifted his head and pressed his mouth back into a straight line. Yet Aiden didn’t seem angry with him at all. He only reckoned they should probably mingle. What was that even supposed to be?

Aleks briefly froze. His brain tried to fire up its last steam engine, searching through smoke and heat for the meaning of the word mingle . Maybe he had once read it in a book, or in a poem, heard it on the radio or somewhere on the street. He combed through every twisted possibility. However, after two breaths he felt lost enough to give in. No one had to notice that he had no idea what it meant. “Yes, exactly! Definitely. Maybe we need plates for that… or brooms…?” A questioning gaze slipped out from hiding and toward his blue eyes.

When all at once, a familiar voice tore the attention toward itself.
“Aleks?” — the Slytherin in foil armour turned halfway and found himself looking at the colour black. Behind small openings a pair of blue, perpetually clever eyes lurked. It could only be Avis! “Avis, Hi!” The smile still couldn’t find its usual place, though, the muscles around his mouth had only just begun to push it upward when the girl asked what he was supposed to be.

The joy fell straight off Aleks’s face, and his lips drew together until only a small pout remained, hardly believing she didn’t recognise him. His own personal terror roamed Hogwarts, after all, practically ran the place! His shoulders slumped with faint grumbling indignation. Since Avis began to greet Aiden, Aleks busied himself by inspecting her costume more closely. Instead of thin arms she had thick muscles, oddly shaped to his eyes.

It still looked impressive, though, if he ignored the fact that he had no idea what she was meant to portray. Aleks shifted his weight lightly onto his left foot, then onto the right, and muttered, “Oh, come on. I look almost identical to him! Anyway—what are you supposed to be? You look really cool with those muscles. Like a beetle on testosterone… or an adult having an identity crisis… are you Professor Sau—?”

“Solomon Lear,” yet another interruption, and Aleks turned to the smooth voice. There stood a boy with small red horns on his head, towing along another student wearing a pumpkin for a head. The young Slytherin let his eyes travel along the orange curves until they caught in the dark hair of the one who had just saved his evening. Especially as the genuinely creepy-looking companion countered the claim with a questioning, “The Headmaster…?”

“Exactly!” Aleks snapped back, the word leaping straight out of his throat. He let out a loud sigh, as if the pent-up tension of overdue bills and a rat in the kitchen had finally escaped him. “Finally someone recognises it…! I don‘t want all the wax to be in vain..”
The stranger remarked that he actually preferred Aleks’s version to the original. The word incompetent had fallen a moment earlier, highlighting a characteristic of the school’s Headmaster that Aleks, for all his fear, had never observed in the mysterious old man.

Instantly, one eyebrow shot upward, and his clever Avis seized the moment to ask precisely what was burning on Aleks’s tongue as well: what had Solomon Lear done for the little satan to hate him this much? Even the pumpkin-headed companion agreed with the question. It seemed to Aleks that all attention now rested on the horned boy with the hazel eyes. Greenish and deep, they lay beneath dark lashes, framed by skin that looked as though it personally forbade freckles from existing. Unconsciously, Aleks stepped back—closer to Aiden—until his arm pressed against the other’s. With a curious glance to the side, he hoped not to find admiration on his best friend’s face, when at long last a wax scar popped off his forehead and fell to the floor.

Aiden’s gaze moved from the crowd back to his friend's crusty wax face when he mentioned plates and brooms. Neither was required for mingling. Mirroring his confusion, he stared at him, almost bursting into chuckles when the realization hit. Aleks clearly had no idea what mingling meant. Aleks would remain clueless, since a moment later they were approached by a muggle superhero he was all too familiar with. The girl, Avis, was no one Aiden knew personally, merely a name he’d heard Aleks mention in passing. Something about a closet and then a trip to Hogsmeade had been retold for him. Aiden hadn’t asked for details back then. He stood beside in silence as she addressed Aleks warily, unsure if it was truly him under all that wax and foil.

The DIY-rendition of the Headmaster was as non-telling to her as it had been to him, which seemed to deeply disappoint the Serb. Eventually, Avis turned to him to introduce herself and asked if he’d let Aleks walk out like that. “Aiden,” he introduced himself politely, yet with distant exasperation. The choice to join had obviously not been his. “I had no clue. He wanted it to be a surprise.” Even if he had known, he would probably not have cared enough to tell him to change, anyway. Aleks quickly quipped to defend his costume, bouncing the question back to Avis superhero suit. His guess was either a beetle on roids or an adult with an identity crisis. Quietly musing to himself, the Slytherin thought that people retorting to steroids to build muscles were a sign of an identity crisis in itself. There was no point in going into muggle details with Aleks, but he smirked in mild amusement at his interpretation with a subtle eye-roll, when it was clear to him that she was Batman.

“She’s batm-” he began, then — completely uncalled for — Aleks almost dropped the potion’s professor's name into the equation. Eyes wide in surprise and successfully stunned, his gaze shot to Aleks to gauge how serious he was. Probably not an example for a beetle, so he could only assume it was the latter. Sauber might be a tough nut to crack, who also generously handed out detention, but he seemed like one of the more self-assured professors in this castle. Having an identity crisis might not be the first choice he would pick to describe him — while handsome was definitely one of them.

Given no opportunity to speak up even if he'd wanted to, they were once again interrupted. This time by a presence that demanded their attention for more reason than his unabashed confidence. His attention was instinctively pulled in. Something about his well-polished appearance was distracting beyond the normal pretty face, more so upon closer inspection. It was the handsome devil and his walking and talking pumpkin he’d spotted when he arrived, though the former was still a poor excuse for a Halloween costume. “Solomon Lear,” the boy said. Everyone seemed surprised, Aiden included, that this guy could immediately pin-point Aleks' waxy face and makeshift armor to the man that ran this school. Either he had a wild imagination or he just wanted an excuse to insult Lear, whether that was accurate or not. In this case it was, and it was also further confirmed that he had some animosity towards the Headmaster.

Drifting lazily between Avis' obvious skepticism, the pumpkin's surprise and the Devil's disdain, he listened to the interaction with eyebrows raised in bemusement, but had no reason to contribute when the topic moved on to where the hate stemmed from. Besides, he couldn’t quite focus on much else except staring mindlessly at the very defined cupid-bow of the stranger with the strong opinions. Only when someone touched his arm did he look away. Glancing to his side, he met Aleks’ eyes, the only thing recognizable behind all that wax, and found anxiety there. Brows creased, he was just about to ask what’s up, when the popping of a piece of wax pulled his attention, down to the floor between their feet. Despite himself, Aiden couldn’t help the chuckle that escaped him after staring at it for a moment too long. “You dropped something,” he said jokingly.

"Figured," she said in response to Aiden's point of Aleks' intention of a character-fitting surprise.

Avis' eyebrows pinched together at her friend's downcast expression and a flash of guilt shot through her chest. She hadn't meant to disappoint him! After greeting his roommate, the Ravenclaw turned back to Aleks and gave him a comforting pat on the shoulder...er shoulder plate, smiling sympathetically.

"It's alright. I can see it now!" she reassured him, after the devil and the pumpkin had both quickly and impressively diagnosed the boy's costume. Perhaps she just wasn't very creative?

At his mention of her "muscles", Avis puffed up her fake chest, grinning proudly at her superhero costume until she realized her friend probably had no idea who she was trying to portray. Merlin, some people were just so unlucky. Batman was the coolest Muggle character of all time and it seemed it was now her duty to inform Aleks of exactly who he was dealing with. She took a breath, about to begin a long spiel and possibly an offer of a comic or two, when Aiden interrupted, only to stop abruptly at Aleks' final guess. Her expression jumped from one of grateful recognition at the Slytherin's correct assumption to baffled confusion at Aleks' guess. Sure, Sauber maybe had a few personality traits that echoed Bruce Wayne but he absolutely did not have an 8 pack combined with a pair of steel guns for biceps and the girl wanted to make that clear.

"No, no, Aleks. Sauber doesn't have muscles like these and he's definitely not a crime-fighting vigilante...as far we know, I guess," she added quickly at the end. The Potions professor was ever so mysterious. Perhaps Aleks had a point...

As she was about to reiterate Aiden's earlier statement of her costume, Avis found herself asking about the nature of devil boy's hatred towards the Headmaster, to which the pumpkin seemed especially interest to talk about and she waited patiently for an answer, all thoughts of explaining her costume leaving her head as swiftly as they had arrived...until her focus was again interrupted by a piece of wax popping off her good friend's face. Avis stared at it in dismay, shooting a chuckling Aiden an exasperated expression before picking it up and approaching Aleks.

"Here," she said and reached up to place the wax piece back in its original spot, holding it in place for a moment to stick it back on. She stepped back, dusting her hands together at her success. "It's like it never fell off," the Ravenclaw said with a smile, steeping back to elbow Aiden discreetly in the ribs in an attempt to stop the chuckling.
