An Unexpected Twist

The corridors were quiet. The only sound that could be heard were the muffled words of portraits speaking with one another and other noises you are only able to hear when there are really no other sounds. That quietness was quickly evaporated by the sound of feet, words and laughter as students filled the corridors on their way to other classes and rooms. It ended up getting quite tight in some spaces too. Children bumping into each other, dropping books, and the like. Despite it possibly looking like chaos to some, it was delightful and lively to have the halls filled with young persons and laughter.

Wes exited his class like any other day, but had to step back in to get his quill he had forgotten. When he stepped back out the hall was filled and he started at a faster walking pace out of fear of being late to his next class. The boy was just a first year, but his height could get him confused with a second year or possibly a third year who was short. When walking down some steps he was shuffling the items around his pack when he fell forward, dropping the bag and a few of its contents spilled. The fall was accompanied with a yelp of pain as he hit the floor, clutching his ankle. Some students stopped to help, one looking to be older that the others and had an air of confidence to him stopped too. He singled out a young redheaded Ravenclaw who had just been passing by. “Excuse me, you. Yes, little girl with the red hair. Can you help him to the hospital wing?” The older student said motioning him her over as if she was going to listen to him. He already had Wes’ pack sitting on the steps next to boy who was clutching his left leg.

An Unexpected Twist
Today was a busy day. Rose had just left one of her class and was heading to the library since she didn't have any left after this one. She wanted to be in some quiet places and to do her homework.

What could be a better place than the library?

Of course she could go to the Ravenclaw common room but it was often full and less quiet than the library. Plus Rose really enjoyed going to the library. It was her nook.

As soon as she stepped in the corridors a mass of students was passing by. It was both frightening and amazing seeing all of this young wizards. She liked it as much as she hated it. She wasn't comfortable when it was too crowded, yet she couldn't help but slightly smile at this view as she started to walk alongside the other students. Some of them were almost running not to be late to their next class. Rose made sure to be out of their way not to be pushed aside neither to hinder in their path. There was nothing more annoying than someone who walk slower than you and you can't walk past.

While walking she heard a voice calling out. Was it to her? She turned around only to see a boy looking much older calling her little girl.
She was short she knew it but from someone she didn't know she quite disliked this way of calling her little girl, especially to call her out.

She looked at him. Was he a prefect?

What does he want from me by calling me little girl. I don't even know him. He seems to be a 5th or 6th year. Does he think he can call around first year as he wishes to help other.

Rose thought annoyingly, she knew it was probably not mean but still.
It wasn't her style to think this way and she would rather willingly and gladly help people when they need it but there was the way to address her.

Then the older boy asked her to help the boy on the floor to go to the the hospital wing.

He might have fallen and hurt himself.

She grinned before going to the boy to help him getting back on his feet.

Though among everyone there the older student had to pick her; small and without much strength.

Someone strong

She slightly shook her head not to think about someone now.

Then she said to the boy while supporting him the best way she could.

"Let's go to the hospital wing, I'll help you walk."

“She looked towards the dark, starry sky wishing she could drown in its vastness, the way one drifts in the deep, endless ocean.”

An Unexpected Twist
Wes grabbed his pack and stood up. Even with the weight off one leg and hobbling he was taller than her. He grimaced as he put a little pressure on it and then leaned on her a little more. His face blushed red, embarrassed at having to be helped to the Hospital Wing. “Sorry…,” he managed to get out with an awkward smile. “he didn’t need to drag you into this. You’ll be late for your next class. I’m fine.”

Some of his stubbornness showed as he attempted to put all his weight back on his left foot again. A squeak came out of his mouth and he mumbled something under his breath before leaning back on her a little. His eyes watered a little, but he held back the tears well enough. “Okay… maybe I’m not fine. So thank you… it’s crazy though that he asked you, when he’s bigger and you’re small.” It took him half a second to realize he might have said something offensive to her and he quickly tried to recover by saying, “Compared to him, not that you’re small to everyone. Just… uh… sorry.”

As they hobbled a few more steps Wes smiled sheepishly, hoping he could change the subject. “I’m Wes.”

An Unexpected Twist
When the boy was finally standing up again leaning a bit on Rose he apologised about her having to take him to the hospital wing.

"Hahaha nevermind! It's all fine. I don't have any class now. I was just heading to the library to study." she said with a small laugh.

Actually she didn't mind to take him to the hospital wing, Rose liked to help other and to feel useful to others. Of course she didn't appreciate much the way that older boy talked to her but it didn't matter much anymore. She was still glad to be able to help that boy.

He was definitely quite injured as only putting his weight on his leg seemed like giving him a lot of pain. So how could have have walked by himself all the way to the hospital wing?

Thankfully classes have started already so the corridor was almost empty thus much easier to walk especially when supporting someone who is injured. As he was already taller than Rose it would have been much harder for her if they had to slalom between other students to get their way through. She sighed of relief.

When the boy told her she was small that made her chuckle.

"Don't worry I know what you meant. And obviously I'm quite small it can't be denied and I don't. Neither do I complain about being small at all. No need to apologise, it didn't offended me if that's what you might be concerned of!" she said while smiling.

Suddenly the boy introduced himself which surprised Rose since it was quite all of sudden.

Maybe he felt embarrassed about his previous remark. She thought without minding more before introducing herself back.

"Nice to meet you Wes. I'm Rose, Rose Pearce."

Actually Rose was hoping she was going to the right direction since she was quite bad at orienting herself but she didn't let it show on her face and kept walking with confidence. Plus Wes will surely help her if she can't recall the right way and lose themselves.

Since the hospital wing was on the third floor and they were on the second one they had to take the stairs to go up.

Hopefully they are not going to move and make things more difficult. Rose worried as getting up the stairs may be a bit complicated for Wes and her to support him there.

Soon they reached the stairs to get to the third floor.

An Unexpected Twist
The thought had crossed his mind too, about the staircases moving around. Honestly the thought of the stairs still confused him and he did not understand the point of them. Seeing a bench he motioned to it, “Mind if we sit for a second? I feel like it’s going to be a long walk…” Even though he asked, Wes went ahead and sat down. When he did he rolled up his pant leg to see it. “My dad always says you should take the shoe off right away and it’s a myth to keep it on.”

So the boy gingerly unlaced his shoe and rolled his sock off. He scrunched his face up when he saw the swollen ankle that was already bruising nicely. “Ugh. Well at least it doesn’t look that bad right?”

Wes asked the question, but then turned to look at Rose’s robes before quickly asking a different one. It was not in a rude way or anything. His tone with the question on his foot sounding more sarcastic than anything. “So you do you like being in Ravenclaw? I was told it’s mainly bookworms in it, not that it’s a bad thing.” A shrug was offered as he prodded at his ankle, causing him to jerk at the pain he caused himself. “Honestly though, my favorite color is blue.”

@Rose Pearce

An Unexpected Twist
As they were going to go up the stairs Wes asked to seat for a moment which Rose could understand regarding his condition. And to be honest it was also giving her a moment of respite to stretch a bit.

When Wes rolled up his pants and took off his shoe and sock she could see how the ankle had swollen. By only looking at it she could feel the pain.

It's going to take a while before he will be able to walk again normally. Rose thought.

That was a bid of bad luck that happened not so long time after the beginning of the school.

...and with all these stairs he might have a hard time.
Unless there is magical care that can heal this kind of injury in just few days or even some hours which would be possible.
This thought came into Rose's mind.

As she was lost into her thoughts she heard Wes talking again to ask her if she liked to be Ravenclaw. But that's not what had mostly caught her attention but the word Wes used to define the Ravenclaw, her house. He referred the Ravenclaw as being bookworms.

Rose glanced at him and her sight darkened a bit.

"Excuse me?" she asked both surprised and angry.

"Did you just call the Ravenclaw people bookworms? Isn't it a bit of pejorative and contemptuous to call us that? Don't you think?"

"I do enjoy being in Ravenclaw, I'm proud of it! I do like reading but that doesn't make me a bookworms. It's not the only thing I do and like. We, Ravenclaw, aren't defined by reading only." Rose added coldly.

She was actually angry at Wes and hurt. Bookworms was indeed a really pejorative term at least to her and it hurt her when she heard him calling the Ravenclaw like this. She couldn't accept it. She didn't know if he realised what he said or not but since he metionned having heard it was it how the Ravenclaw were perceived and referred to?

Rose was helping him but now since she was mad she could just have let him here and walked away.

Obviously she wouldn't do it since it was not her type but still inside she was hurt.

“She looked towards the dark, starry sky wishing she could drown in its vastness, the way one drifts in the deep, endless ocean.”

An Unexpected Twist
The anger from the girl caught Wes off guard. When he heard the sharp tone he snapped his head to look at her and his eyes widened in surprise. There he had gone, putting his foot in his mouth again. One would think that with three older sisters that he’d be a little better with words.

Wes frowned as she spoke. Not that he was sad that she was speaking to him like that. Instead he felt bad that he offended her. Honestly in his mind he didn’t even know that it was an insult. “Look… I didn’t mean it like that. I…” with a long pause, he attempted to not say anything stupid again, “I still don’t know much about any other Houses, even my own really. I just always thought Ravenclaws are considered the smartest and some of the most brilliant.”

His eyes fell from hers to look at the floor. At this point he did feel himself in a bit of a pity party. “So that must’ve been a reason you got sorted there or something.” Then in a bonehead move, he attempted to stand. He did stand, even hid the grimace decently well. “I think I can make it from here to the hospital wing.”

Though when he looked toward the stairs, he didn’t look to confident. The Gryffindor boy actually didn’t know how to get there, even if he was able to get the correct floor.

@Rose Pearce

An Unexpected Twist
When Wes spoke it seemed apologetically to Rose. He indeed admitted her not to know much about the houses explaining why he might have used this term without a second thought. Although she was hurt Rose wasn't someone resentful and when someone is ignorant mistakes are often made.

Wes' words may have been more out of clumsiness than actually mean. She felt a bit bad for having talked to him this coldly but Ravenclaw was her pride. A huge part of her family including her brother and her were in Ravenclaw so she couldn't just let someone talk about them like that.

Of course she felt a bit flattered when Wes said the Ravenclaws were considered the smartest and brilliant for some but she wasn't going to brag about it or point out this remark. Instead she only let flashing a small smile on her lips.

She could notice Wes was trying to fix his words and probably apologise in his way which she was appreciating.

Suddenly Wes stood up while saying he could make it alone to the hospital wing. Even though he succeeded to stand up and seemed quite confident about going there by himself it seemed to Rose he was quite in pain, yet hiding it quite well. However she couldn't be fooled that easily. He was struggling earlier to stand on both of his legs and by the look of his ankle it would be less likely he could make it by himself all the way to the hospital wing now.

Plus by the look on Wes' face while looking at the stairs it was written all over his face he wasn't confident by going there alone.

Rose let out a small chuckle at Wes behaviour.

"Don't be silly. You can't even stand properly. How would you make it up through the stairs? You might end up hurting yourself even more." She told with a more serious concerned tone on her last sentence.

"Also I would feel bad to let you go like this knowing you're in a bad condition. Don't worry I will get you there. Because you offended me doesn't mean I'm not going to help you." She added with a gentle smile towards him.

"Let's go." She said while coming near him to support him walk again.

“She looked towards the dark, starry sky wishing she could drown in its vastness, the way one drifts in the deep, endless ocean.”

An Unexpected Twist
Reluctantly would not be the right way to describe how he felt about still taking her help; instead, he still just felt bad about what he had said. He offered her a smile and still only met her eyes for just a moment. He really did not want to keep saying he was sorry, but his body language was still showing remorse. Regardless, the Gryffindor took the support once more, and they started.

He looked down at his foot and then shrugged to Rose. "I heard that they can heal broken bones and stuff real quick." Wes said this as if the awkward situation had simply slipped out of his memory. The boy then let out a laugh with a snort. "My dad will be jealous when I tell him. Stuff like that would make his job so much easier." This made him think about all of his old injuries - his broken arm, broken nose, and the few fingers. It would have made his life easier too.

Slowly walking with her, trying not to lean on her too much, the duo began up the stairs. Though being a marvel that confused him, he still enjoyed them for what they were. "So are your parents wizards?"

@Rose Pearce

An Unexpected Twist
It seemed to Rose that Wes was still sorry about his words and almost embarrassed for her to keep helping him. However Rose wasn't doing it because she felt obliged to she was doing it because she wanted to help him. When she saw him smiling at her she gave him back a small smile to reassure him it was fine.

As they were heading towards the stairs Wes started to speak again about how broken bones can be magically repaired. Indeed it was one of the things about magic that was fascinating and making life much easier when one's was being hurt. When Wes talked about his dad saying his life would be easier for him if he knew this was existing Rose thought her dad might be a muggle and that his dad was a doctor or a surgeon?

"Is your dad a doctor?" she asked him out of curiosity. Though she thought he might be also muggle she didn't dare to ask as she didn't want to seem rude.

As they started slowly going up the stairs with Rose carefully helping Wes for him not to use too much his injured ankle while going up the stairs he suddenly asked her if her parents were wizards.

She actually didn't expect this question but it was half confirming her assumption about Wes' father being a muggle. And since the question was asked to her she could ask Wes back as well.

"Yes both of my parents are wizards. However not all of my family members are wizards. Some of them are muggles and others muggle born. So I'm quite familiar with both world: wizards and muggles." she told him while carefully looking down at their steps.

"What about you? If you say your dad would amazed by repairing bones with magic he may be a muggle, isn't he?" she asked him hoping not to seem too rude about the second question. She was only asking out of curiosity and was hoping for Wes not to get offended by it.
