The abandoned classroom on the second floor of the castle was a measured choice for Luca to hone his magical prowess for the future ambitions he had set for himself. During his first year, the young wizard had become interested in the Auror career path, and this led him to enjoy Defense Against the Dark Arts and Potions class the most because they applied to his chosen future field. Additionally, he had put his name on a shortlist of applicants to the Slytherin Duelling Team, so he needed to practice to become the best Duellist in the history of Hogwarts, or so he intended to be. He was determined to do this.

Practising in class was okay, but practising in the study room was alright. However, the Corranado boy wanted peace, quiet, and a lack of prying eyes, so his arcane might was measured. After a late afternoon Charms class with Professor Fresnel, Luca decided to take his afternoon in solitude, practicing various spells. He took the stairs to the second floor and found the hallway in question, where the abandoned classroom was located, which contained many mysteries from Hogwarts. With this first task before him, Luca decided to start his practice early.

"Aberto," the Slytherin boy spoke confidently after pulling his wand out. Luca traced the small circle in the air, careful not to overextend the motion. The boy remembered that Aberto relied on precision, not force — that a careless flourish could rattle hinges or jam a lock entirely. His wrist turned smoothly counterclockwise, then snapped forward with intent. The first success of the day was self-evident when the door to the abandoned classroom swung open in response to his spell. As he stepped into the room, he looked over his new domain with intent.

The young wizard started racking his brain for spells that he could train without drawing too much attention to himself. There were many spells in his arsenal for that, but none that served him as a future Auror or Master Duellist that could easily be practiced in the current setting. The Wand Lighting Charm, Wand Extinguishing Charm, Bluebell Flames, Severing Charm (with caution), Fiery Script Charm, Softening Charm, Paper Mending Charm, and the Hardening Charm were just a few that came to mind. Still, none besides the Severing Charm were particularly offensive or effective in a duel. He knew that the Bluebell Flames spell could he used offensively and Lumos/Nox had the potential to create tactical advantages, though.

However, the Corranado boy started to think.

A wand and a wizard had to take time to learn each other's strengths, weaknesses, and habits. The more a wand and its user learned about each other, the more they would become a powerful combination. After a short time, Luca decided to start with the Paper Mending Charm after spotting a bit of parchment lying under an old, unsuspecting quill. Taking a piece in his hand, he ripped it nearly in half with the other hand and put it on an empty, dusty desk. Corranado started to rack his brain for the incantation and wand movement as he pulled out his wand.

"Papyrus reparo," the Slytherin boy spoke aloud as he started making a zig-zag motion back and forth. Precision, not force, Luca reminded himself, keeping his wrist steady as the parchment edges drew back together like closing wings. This was going well, as two spells had worked out reasonably well for him already. His confidence grew, and he decided to practice something more serious. Diffindo.

Using his astute mind, Luca decided to avoid detection by practicing with the small stack of papers under the quill. He took the stack and placed it on a stone ledge connected to the stone wall, remembering at least that the spell wouldn't cut stone. He took his wand and suddenly started drawing a blank on the wand movement or incantation for the Severing Charm.

"Hm, what was the incantation? The wand movement for the Severing Charm? I can't remember," the boy said in frustration. Suddenly, out of the corner of his eye, he saw the quill begin to move. Quickly, he turned and saw that it was writing on the piece of parchment that he had just finished mending. Astonished, Luca went over and watched as the quill wrote out:

Diffindo. A swift, slicing motion — like cutting with a knife.

The quill suddenly lay itself down and went back to being inanimate. Luca sat with his lips pursed at what he had just seen before turning back to the stack of papers and trying to focus on the task at hand. Luca lifted his wand and performed a quick, downward diagonal slicing motion, the kind the quill described—precise, sharp, and decisive—before speaking clearly, "Diffindo!"

Suddenly, the stack of paper began to slice, but stopped in the middle: a success, but only half of one. The boy huffed with a measured amount of frustration at his failure. He also realized that his talking and spellcasting made a bit of noise, so he peered towards the door before going back to the quill, curious.

"What is this?" Luca asked it, picking it up and holding it in his hand.

The day was going ordinary. Linda sighed. It was getting boring and she didn't know what to do. She decided to walk around the castle, buried in her own thoughts. Linda was walking slowly, not really noticing where she was going. Her bestie was acting differently this time and she was only guessing what might've happened. Though she had no way to know for sure or who it was if her assuming was correct. It has never happened before. She knew Reyna as a happy girl, always positive and energetic. But now it seemed like all energy left the girl she knew. As if something bad happened. As if she lost someone dear to her. Linda knew this feeling quite well. That was the only reason she was assuming it happened with her bestie as well. She could try to ask to see if she was correct or not, but she didn't want to do it. Silent understanding and support was going to be a better choice than to ask directly what happened.

There was one classroom she almost didn't go to before. She met someone there but didn't see him ever since. She thought she met someone else there, but those friends disappeared somewhere long ago. Now she had no memories of who it was. Why they disappeared? Who they were? She didn't know. Perhaps she could go to that classroom now. Memories about the lost friends were always there. Always with her. Sigh. She grew up and became more serious. She still knew how to be happy, but now it was with her close friends and with him. Something was starting between them it seemed and she felt excited to see how it will develop. Was he feeling the same? They started to hold hands more and it was really happy time that they spent together. Though he was confusing her sometimes, she was happy. They were still in the beginning, both moving slowly, but it was great. She wouldn't trust if it was going too fast. A small smile appeared on her face. He definitely was making her happy. Especially that day when he didn't run away again.

The castle felt cold and she felt like her shadow was following her. A stupid feeling caused by the game of the light and her sad memories. A trick she wasn't going to fall for. October wasn't that cold, but it wasn't warm either. She was wearing a dark blue sweatshirt and black trousers. Warm enough but not the most warm clothes she had. Could she be great at healing? So great that she wouldn't lose anyone anymore? She knew the answer. It wasn't possible. Even the best couldn't save everyone. But she would still try. Now she decided she will attempt to learn more, practice more. She will do everything she could.

She was near the classroom now but didn't enter yet. Why was she here? She didn't know. Why would her legs bring her here? However, something must have caught her attention. She hesitated a little before entering the classroom. It wasn't like other rooms in the castle. There was something different, but she couldn't quite catch what it was. The atmosphere was like it was abandoned some time ago. Linda wondered was it possible? She couldn't remember any abandoned classrooms. Though she also didn't know the whole castle, never used all the secret passages. Since she entered, she realized what caused her to stop here. She heard someone talking and some noise coming from this place. She looked around and saw someone. A boy who seemed to be interested in something.

He looked younger than her. It looked like he was holding something. Was it a quill? What made him so interested in it? Curiosity filled her and replaced all her thoughts. Hi. What are you doing with this quill? She came closer and looked at the quill and back at the boy. She didn't know this boy. Did she? What made her even more curious was that he was here alone and was looking at the quill as if there was something unusual about it. What was it? Linda didn't have any idea, having missed what happened before. All her boredom has left her. Now she felt more energetic. Perhaps for the first time ever in this day. Whatever was happening here helped her to distract and she was thankful she came here.

The hair on the back of Luca's neck stood up when he sensed that he was no longer alone in the abandoned classroom, though he kept his expression controlled, as he always did. The door opening was his first clue, followed by the sound of soft footfalls against the wooden floor. The boy didn't expect any company and mentally corrected his lapse in discretion for drawing attention to his presence in the classroom. Turning around with the quill in hand to face the interruption, the sight of a young girl with long, vibrant red hair greeted the young wizard. She was older and taller than he by several centimeters. "Hello," Luca said to the girl with practiced confidence.

He had a decision to make in mere moments to avoid an awkward pause between them. Did he take the route of Prefect on patrol and redirect this older student away so he could practice in solitude, or did he let this potential new ally in on the mysterious events of moments ago? He noted her height and posture—useful information—before noticing her soft, delicate features: a gently defined jawline, a straight nose, and expressive, light-colored eyes. Perhaps she has knowledge and experience that I could benefit from and apply to duelling or becoming an Auror, Luca thought in that moment.

"This quill?" Luca asked rhetorically. Still holding the quill in his dominant hand during the natural pause after his rhetorical question, the boy absentmindedly glided the feather of the quill through his other hand. The Slytherin thought about what had just happened as he was practicing the Severing Charm, and tried to form the words to explain what he had seen. "I was running through the Severing Charm, but I blanked on the wand movement and muttered the question aloud. The quill heard me—or reacted somehow—and wrote the answer on the parchment," he explained evenly. With his free hand, he pointed toward the parchment with the writing on it:

Diffindo. A swift, slicing motion — like cutting with a knife.

Luca had answered the girl's query and was eager to return to his training, but his mother's words reminded him of the importance of his etiquette. Courtesy costs nothing, but it pays out more than any vault, Luca's mind spoke to him in Amelia's voice, dripping with her British accent. With a short breath in, the boy turned away from his partially sliced stack of parchment on the stone outcropping at one end of the classroom. With a warm smile, the boy introduced himself to the girl.

"Luca Corranado, Prefect of Slytherin," the young boy said, his polished Prefect badge affixed properly to the left chest of his pressed black robe. He offered his introduction with proper etiquette, intending it to sound formal, yet nothing more. In proper form, one of Luca's hands came from underneath his robe and was offered to her politely. More of his mother's words came to the forefront of his mind: Never forget: your manners are your first negotiation. He observed her reaction, as he always did.

Linda was curious. She wasn't intending to interrupt this young boy. But now that she did it already, she might as well stay and try to discover more. There was nothing outstanding about the boy at the first glance. However, she noticed his prefect badge that he seemed to be proud of. He was definitely polite, however she had no way to know whether it was just the way he was raised or he generally didn't mind her here.

Ah so that's what caught your attention. Now I see. I was just passing by and heard some sounds. It was fascinating to see you looking at it in a way like it has some unexplained mystery about it. Sorry for interrupting your practice. She spoke softly, making it unclear what she felt. However, one thing could be said for sure. She didn't make fun of him. But Linda already had idea what it was as the description matched one quill.

Linda Ramirez, Gryffindor broom racing co-captain. She didn't have any other titles, except that she was working with the newspaper. However, she supposed this introduction was still good enough. She reached out to his offered hand and then looked at him. Studying him more this time.

Do you practice as hobby or as preparing for a sport team? Since he was practicing, she could step aside and practice too. Or she could just look at him. However, perhaps it would be more polite to leave him practicing alone, though if something would backfire, the boy was risking a lot. Deciding to stay, she stepped aside, giving him more space for his next move. She also needed to practice more. Shield and healing were the spells she tried to focus on more. However, she was also still searching for a strong attacking spell. Healing was great and shield, though not perfect, could help with defense. But defense alone wasn't going to be enough. It was never going to work out.

Linda spoke, and Luca took stock of her quietly while listening. The young girl before him stood several centimeters higher than he did, but didn’t have to crane his neck to meet her eyes. Luca’s dark brown hair stood out against the lighter brown of his new acquaintances. Linda’s Hogwarts house could be inferred from the scarlet red on her robes; she also mentioned being Co-Captain of the Broom Racing Team. This piqued Luca’s interest as someone worth learning from about strategy or other helpful habits that a young wizard should form.

“No apology is necessary. You are not interfering. I am looking to join the Viridian Vipers, Slytherin’s Dueling Team. I am intentionally here preparing for when the opportunity arises,” Luca responded, measured and polite. He wasn’t familiar with Linda entirely, so he didn’t overexplain his intention to become an Auror later in life as well. “Co-Captain. Must you know a bit about strategy then? I would imagine broom racing requires as much discipline as dueling?” the Corranado added as a bit of a direct question back to her. As she stepped away to give him space, he subtly nodded in appreciation before referring back to the quill.

“Perhaps you might enlighten me, as you seem to know something about this quill that escapes me?” Luca asked Linda as he looked at the now lifeless quill lying on the table next to the parchment.

That's nice. I guess you could be great at it when you join. She mused. Linda wasn't interested in duelling, never considered joining it or even to give it a try. But the sport itself wasn't that bad, just more direct at confrontations.

Certainly I know quite a bit. Just like captain it's my responsibility to think about the strategy. Discipline? I suppose it does. Though the game is more chaotic usually with some going for attacks, while others choose to attempt to move along the path. Was it more chaotic or more disciplined? Linda wasn't sure. Certainly there were expectations and little limits. But in her little experience, it looked more chaotic.

There's a quill that you can easily purchase. It auto-fills the answers to the questions. So I guess that it's what this quill is doing with you as well. That's why your reaction was causing more curiosity than the quill did. It suggested something unusual about it, which I suppose still can be true. Her voice was polite without any sarcasm or laughter. She generally found it more amusing than anything to laugh at. Did he not realize this about the quill? But also Linda didn't know anything about him. Perhaps, things with magic were new to him. Something that was like routine or general knowledge for some, was entirely new to others. And after all Hogwarts was welcoming students with different backgrounds and knowledge.

The Slytherin reexamined the seemingly lifeless quill sitting on the table after Linda explained what it was. For a brief moment, Luca was a bit internally embarrassed that he didn’t recognize an Auto-Answers Quill. The young wizard searched his mind for any memory of Lillianna or his parents, explaining one. Finding none, he did not dwell on it. The Corranado heir was in a unique situation: he was born in America but spent most of his childhood in Great Britain.

Plus, none of his adult influences would ever have a reason to use an Auto-Answers Quill, so it was hardly surprising that he didn’t know what it was. He immediately recognized the nefarious uses of this object, but he thought more about its genuine uses, such as helping with forgotten knowledge. Though Luca prided himself on useful connections, and while an Auto-Answers Quill would serve him in some ways, the boy would rather gain connections that served him over objects. If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room, his father used to say. In Linda — a senior and Co-Captain of the Broom Racing Team — Luca recognized that he was in the right room.

“Well, both broom racing and dueling require some strategic thinking under chaotic conditions—attacks?” Luca asked, stopping mid-sentence when Linda suggested there are offensive moves in broom racing. “I don’t know much about the sport, but I’m surprised to hear there are attacks in broom racing. I would venture to say broom racing would be more disciplined as the goal is in front of you always, whereas attacks can come from any of your opponents in dueling, but I may be wrong if there are attacks.”

Luca examined Linda for a moment and filed her away quietly as someone worth knowing. He straightened up his posture and turned back towards his practice table for a moment to adjust his notes before turning back to Linda. “Would you like to practice a spell with me before I retire for the evening?”
