To Have One Such Friend PV Marla Closed

Damon,

I am terribly sorry that I was unable to meet with you this summer, but you surely understand my circumstances. It is awful, the way that things are. If I could change everything, I would. However, my uncle said that I should be able to pay you a visit soon enough, so all is well. It will just put a temporary delay on our plans. But I swear, the moment I come back to England for my birthday, I will meet up with you. I can't invite you to my party, however. My friends would not understand.

But enough about me. How are you? Shame that we can't even attend the same school. I miss seeing you! What are your classes like? How are your friends? You must tell me all about it, naturally.

Oh, and my sincerest apologies for not writing sooner. As you might have guessed, this past year was insane enough without taking the time to write letters. Call it lazy, as I know that you would, but one of us needs to pass their classes. I also have a reputation to uphold, and such matters are not pursued by writing letters all day. It is scarce that I even make the time to write to my family, which bothers them. But what do I care, anyway? Not everyone can have a perfect life.

Surely you will understand that beauty is pain, and even vice versa. It is definitely a lesson that I became well acquainted with this year. And look at me, I acquired eloquence in the process! I am certainly rather formal these days, but I am not sure that I could write to you in any other tone. Especially not if mother somehow got ahold of these owls, which is why, I suppose, I sign my name the way that I do.

But I am positive that this letter will find you without much trouble, so I am stressing over nothing at all. If I can be confident in nothing else, then it will be in the owls and their delivery method. Anyway, it is not as though my mother could track every owl in America. If she could, then I would have other issues to worry about. But alas, I am comforted with the fact that she does not even know where I currently am. She could take a shot in the dark, however. There are very few places that I could go.

As a matter of fact, Damon, I would say that I am quite thrilled to have a shoulder to lean on. My friends at school, and yes, I do have friends, are not quite the same as you. I fear that they wouldn't understand. While there is no doubt that they are kind souls, it is different. Thank you, I suppose.

But enough of me being sappy. I have much to tell you, but I am rather fearful of making this all about me. Instead, I have many of questions for you. I hardly know you anymore! The better part of the year was spent not speaking to you, so I am sure that you have tales to tell that will send shivers down my spine. You certainly live a life more thrilling than mine own, which frightens me. How does the action flock to you, whereas I remain bored, as per usual? But I suppose that I can live through you, so I am demanding stories! Every story that you can muster!

I am going to end it here, but tell your mother that I said hello.

I miss you.

[quote]Pythias,

I...Believe you have the wrong person. Sorry to break it to you. However, as to not disappoint, and due to my current severe boredom, may I just ask what you mean by "awful"? And who is this Damien? By the sound of it, he's a nice person. Who you're embarrassed of. Can't come to your birthday party? How cruel. Just joking, but seriously, I kind of forgot birthday parties were a thing. Not to get depressing, but I've never had one, nor have I really ever been invited to any. I don't mind though, I'd much rather have my nose in a book than be stuffing down some cheap cake bought at a corner store.

England, you say? With this letter being delivered by owl, I'm assuming you go to Hogwarts, which is interesting, because that's actually where I go to school. What are the odds? If you happen to actually go there and I'm not insane, let me just stress how annoying that stupid Bonifarts Mactavish is. He'll literally give me detentions for putting a toe out of line. Mad, that one. Can't believe I have to deal with him for another few years, I might just go insane. Speaking of, who's your least favorite professor? There has to be at least one who's class makes you want to writhe in disgust.

At this point, I'm just playing a game trying to guess who you are. Because there's no one in Hogwarts I've heard of named Pythias. At this point I'm convinced you to go another school but we'll see, if you even respond. But especially with a "reputation". No offense, but having a reputation seems like it sucks. Can you even get away with doing anything even remotely fun? Of course, I have a bit of a reputation, but I don't exactly have a perfect record, so there's nothing to hide there.

Yes, I suppose beauty is pain. The fact that some people have the willpower to wear heels and dresses every day is astounding to me. Couldn't even do it for a whole hour without whining about it every two seconds, if I'm to be honest. And wow, your mom must be something else if she's getting on your ass about letters. Especially to friends! It isn't like one letter is going to afflict your entire future, what's the point of doing it if you have to worry about every little word?

"But I am positive that this letter will find you without much trouble, so I am stressing over nothing at all." Ah, the irony. But it does seem like you and the real Damien are very close. I do hope at one point this letter reaches him. Or any other letter. But I'd cut your owl some slack, compared to England, America is huge. They probably just got a bit confused.

It's funny that you say that about your friends. People at my old school were jerks, but now, I've met few friends, but the ones I've made so far are practically irreplaceable. This isn't me trying to brag or anything– I'm just saying, there are people out there, or in your school, that would understand your situation more than you'd expect, even if I don't even know what your situation is. Or who you are.

If you're demanding stories, with how "boring" your life is, I'll oblige and give you a few small ones. Just because I'm feeling generous (not really I'm just insanely bored). First one: I got to America by sneaking into some random girl's suitcase my age. Stayed in there for quite a few hours, and I'm not exactly sure how I'm alive right now but considering that I'm not dead and lying in a sweat puddle right now I'm not going to ask questions.

Oh! One more somewhat interesting one. I stepped into some abandoned bathrooms this last at school and saw one of my friends acting really strange, so I started to ask him what was going on and whatnot... And what do you know, he socks me right in the face. How courteous. Buuut later found out it was justified, though it isn't exactly my place to explain why, especially because he confided in me about it. Even though you don't know who he is or who I am– it just wouldn't feel right.

I'll be sending back your original letter just in case you want to send it to your friend, hopefully your owl will get it right this time. But it does sound like you're going through a rough patch. If you want to write back and talk about it, feel free. I've been through my fair share of those. Then again, I won't be offended if you don't write back– after all it isn't who you're expecting.

For now, I'd prefer to keep my identity secret. Especially with some of the stories I've told you. I don't need people knowing that I was punched in the face by a friend gone wild, or that I almost sweat myself to death on an airplane. Though I do hope you find your Damien. He seems nice.

Best of luck.

[quote]"Damien",

Well, it's rather clear to me that I have the wrong person, because I am doubtful that he would ever misspell his own name more than once. I could justify the one time, on account of the fact that he's a total blockhead, but not more than that. At least this letter reached someone with a good-natured mind, and one thoughtful enough to respond. I did find the real Damon, and I am certainly firing that bloody owl after all this trouble.

Oui, England, though I am from France originally. I guess Beauxbatons just wasn't suitable for me, so now I'm located in Manchester. I do attend Hogwarts, but because you are a total stranger who is probably about to learn some pretty embarrassing things about me, that's all that you're going to find out. Besides, if you're smart enough, maybe you've already deciphered who I am. There are not many people to pick from, anyway.

I do have a reputation, I will have you know. One that I uphold proudly, as it is my family's wish. But no, my name is not Pythias. The story of Damon and Pythias is an old one; they are of two friends, some have even interpreted them as lovers, who were willing to die for one another. The same pseudonyms were found in the correspondence between Benjamin Tallmadge and Nathan Hale. In summary, I've spent far too much time in America with nothing to do. Especially having been thrown into the East Coast without much parental supervision, in the remote of Long Island where surely no one would find us or suspect us of possessing magic, I found myself busied by American history. Some of it is fascinating, the rest... Boring. And thus, Damon and Pythias were born; names shared between myself and my American friend.

Anyway, reputation. Well, at least I know that you're not a nobody. I couldn't imagine that being so, as sometimes it feels that the school is so small to the point where everyone knows everyone. I guess I know most people, but the more first years that come in, the more I find myself losing track, or not caring enough to begin with. Not that I care about the reputation of others. It's a dumb mentality that comes with boring stereotypes and tropes. Yes, I do live up to mine, but that's because I have no other choice but to. It sounds so odd, but it's not something I can really explain. Like, my parents were these people and now I either have to be them or have to be the exact opposite of them, and there is absolutely no in-between. I guess I sort of am like my mother, but I hold many more responsibilities than she does, and at least I will bring honor and pride to our name, unlike her.

Well, as I said previously, the relationship between myself and my parents are complicated. They aren't exactly in my life right now, but I know that they watch my back, and not in a good and helpful way. It's like having someone spying on you, really. They're bad people who only want bad things. That's why I was out of the country for a brief period of time. I was in New Orleans with my uncle.

Yes, America is huge. Maybe next time I will aim for Canada.

My issue really is that I'm friends with primarily half-bloods or muggle-borns. Not that I have an issue with them (obviously, I am friends with them), but it's just that they haven't been through the same life experiences as I have. Sure, some of them come from shitty places, but it's like... I don't know, it isn't the same. I know that they would me sympathetic, but they wouldn't get it, and I especially don't want them to try to solve problems that they know nothing about.

Sneaking to America is risky business. Do tell me more; did you get caught? What was the experience like? Why... actually, just why?

Yikes, you sound like you're in way more drama than I am. The most interesting thing that's happened to me is... Well, let's just say I punched some deserving Gryffindor one time. It was worth it.

I suppose I will give you one in return. I broke into the herbology building, and not even for any good reason. Well, sort of a good reason. My friend and I raised a plant together, and he was totally being held hostage in there. I don't have a green thumb, but I love this plant, man. So, my friend hoisted me up, I went through an open window, broke some things, cut my hand open, and rescued a plant all in one day. I really need to have better experiences next year.

I hope to hear back from you, oddly enough. This was therapeutic, since I'm not risking my identity and... Reputation.
