Halloween, a time of treats, tricks and costumes. Mylo had never really been one to celebrate the holiday only having participated in some of the activities that had been organised at school, at home they had always kept some sweets aside just on the off chance that children had decided to come round.

This year once again they found themselves participating in one of the events that had been announced in the Hogwarts Headliner, and that they had heard Maisie talking about. Which is why they now found themselves walking towards the paper's office, dressed up in a costume that had taken slightly more time to put together than he had originally thought it would, but their scarecrow outfit inspired by the wizard of oz had turned out a lot better than he could have hoped.

They hadn't really planned on actually doing something so elaborate but every time they thought about not doing it two small voices, which sounded suspiciously like Maisie's and Avis's, would pop into their head, letting them know that it would be so fun! And why didn't he want to have any fun? Which meant that he eventually found themself sitting down and putting together what they were now wearing.

Nearing the door they could see a few familiar faces standing there and multiple members of the headliner team handing out both sweets and mystery tickets, one of which being an older Ravenclaw he vaguely recognised, it might have been from the ball as the costume seemed familiar. They had decorated the place amazingly and Mylo couldn't help but stop and admire everything for a moment before making their way over to the drowned sailor was, waiting for Mylo to choose their fate.

"Hi, your costume is amazing! Could I have -" Before they could choose the safe option though a familiar face popped into the corner of their eye, prompting the suspicious voices to immediately pop up again. Maisie hadn't somehow learnt telepathy right?

"Where's the fun in the safe choice? Choose fun! Choose adventure! Choose the unknown! BE FUN MYLO!"

It really was a dilemma, but looking over at Maisie they sighed, knowing which choice had to be made.

"I think I'll go with the mystery ticket, thank you." He said, putting their hand into the tin and removing one of the slips of paper that they found inside.

Halloween was something Tatiana never liked to celebrate. Even as a child, she chose not to engage with activities with the other children when October 31st wavered. She knew that the muggles had also celebrated this event, and whenever nightfall came around, she would just stay at home and watch as the other children went out and had fun.

When news that the Headliner was holding some sort of event infront of their office, Tatiana, never the Halloween celebrant, was sparked with interest. She entered the corridors wearing a simple “catwoman” costume from the muggle comic series “DC”, face painted whiskers with cat ears on her hair, a bullwhip and a sleek black bodysuit, she mimicked the appearance of the villainess that long went against “Batman”, the main character of the comic series.

As Tatiana was a long muggle hater, you might wonder how and why she chose to be this feline con artist, well Tatiana also had some tricks up her sleeve and has long been reading the comics, begging her godparents to buy her a new comic every now and then and spent her unoccupied evenings at Hogwarts reading them in her bed.

Wrapping the bullwhip around her hand, fearing she might hit someone accidentally and make them end up in the hospital wing and her in the headmaster's office for attempted injury, she crossed the lantern-lit, stone corridors and spotted the crowd around the Headliner's Office door, where it was managed by a seventh year writer.

When she arrived, she was told to pick between two items: a mystery ticket, or a chocolate frog. As she was never much of a risk taker, she chose the chocolate frog, and instead of possibly earning herself an injury, she got herself a new card, possibly a duplicate but still effective, to add to her collection, and also earned herself the latest Headliner issue for some reason. She thanked the older student and went off to spend the night alone.

It was Halloween night, and Frederick was getting ready in his dormitory before heading down for dinner. He knew there was an event going on where students could make their own costumes for the evening, but he didn’t have much patience for that sort of thing. So that no one could say he hadn’t dressed up, he simply wore black from head to toe, threw his black cloak over his shoulders, and pulled the hood up over his head.

Before reaching the portrait hole, already in the Gryffindor Common Room, Frederick overheard a group of fourth-years talking about another event, something happening at the door of The Headliner, the Hogwarts newspaper, and it had to do with some kind of mysterious ticket. It didn’t take much to convince Fred, who hadn’t planned on making any stops before the Great Hall, but now couldn’t pass up what sounded like a perfect trick or treat opportunity.

He made his way down from the Gryffindor Tower alone, the castle feeling different that night, alive with Halloween decorations spread through the corridors. With every step, he noticed the faint sound of music growing louder, seeming to come from the direction he was headed. When he turned the final corner, Fred couldn’t help but smile, a wide grin that brightened his face, partially shadowed by the thick hood. The hallway was alive with flickering gold and orange lights, and something in the air smelled like chocolate mixed with fireworks, a scent he quickly realized came from the stacked boxes of Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes on one of the tables. Dozens of carved pumpkins floated in midair, candles flickering inside them, and banners hung across the hall reading: “The Headliner’s Hallows Night: Pick Trick or Treat!”

Fred moved closer, taking everything in. Students of all ages filled the space, some in full costumes, others just wearing funny hats, chatting and laughing. At the center of it all, behind a wooden table, stood an older student in costume, wand in hand. Beside him sat a large cauldron brimming with folded slips of parchment, which Fred assumed must be the mystery tickets everyone had been talking about.

Fred hesitated for a second, watching another student reach into the cauldron and pull out a slip, only to yelp as a puff of glitter exploded in their face. The crowd burst into laughter, and Fred couldn’t help but laugh too. Okay, maybe this was worth it, he thought. He leaned on the edge of the table, pretending to inspect the cauldron closely, then rubbed his hands together in mock anticipation, a grin spreading across his face. “Alright then,” he said, voice light with excitement. “Let’s see what fate’s got for me tonight.” And requested the mystery ticket, waiting to see, with his heart pouding a little faster, what would happen.

The Angel ~ The Sun ~ The Ghost

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
————
Sleep is for the dead. And that night, Lyanna was decisively alive, her angel mask enveloping her soul like an inner spirit finally grasping the peace that it deserves, the eye of the storm. A moment fluttering by like a leaf, falling to the ground, but in the meantime, she was happy.

On October 31st, an Angel graced the world with its presence.

An angel indeed, or rather a sunchild masked as one, that mask rooting itself deeper into her soul as the seconds ticked by on the clocks in the corridors. For a ghost is as real as anyone, but only those worthy of seeing it have the ability to. Others, the shallow-minded, they simply look past such details, their whimsy lacking spirit, their heart lacking love.

A pity.

There was a new light in the room, her name was Lyanna. She had been looking for herself for centuries, burning and shining, giving to others and hiding her pain, but as an Angel she could forget her pain, as it did not define her. Not now, not ever. That former mask of fake happiness, it was gone now. She was free at last, and she was happy.

That was all that mattered, at least for tonight.

After having left the Small Hall, Lyanna was not ready to sleep. No, not yet, for the rest of the evening awaited her, and she was an angel now, born on earth, blessed by the sun, thrown into Hell for all that her life was worth. A mistake, that she took upon herself to fix. Angels do not belong in Tartarus, nor does the sun. She burns, but gives light. She has the touch of Kind Midas, but shares kindness instead of gold. She matters more than she ever thought she did.

New realizations, perhaps?

Nothing more remains to be told, of this dear sunchild.
XxXMay the Angel's story continue.

A click and a latch, and Lyanna had entered yet another room where yet another party was hosted. This one was unlike the former, though- with but eleven people in its attendance, the claustrophobia that had swept over her in the Small Hall did not return. A glance around the room told her this one was different, more like the muggle traditions that she had attended as a Wizardborn during her youth.

Trick or Treat.

There were two options to choose from- number one, two chocolate frogs. And number two... its much more interesting alternative, either a hex or a reward, depending on the digit printed on the ticket that was picked from the box. The sunchild inside her reasoned better safe than sorry. The Angel on the other hand... What was the fun of choosing a reward without deserving it? And the sunchild had to agree.

A graceful stretch of the angel's hand, and with a swift movement she took a slip of paper from the box that awaited her. A rush of adrenaline coursed through her sending prickles down her spine, and without hesitating any longer — for every moment of hesitation is a moment not spent living — the sunchild passed the note on to the host of the event.

The Angel had come to the light at last, awaiting her fate like any other. Only she was not merely 'any other', she was Lyanna Oak, her essence pure as gold, her love endless and unrequited. But today, it was requited. Because she was seen. And that was enough.

Colin is eagerly awaiting the chaos!
Colin smirked as Peri revealed the totally not sus mystery boxes! His eyes widened as the older student flung the magic at one younger kid. Sure, loads of adults could cast magic without a wand, but Colin was really impressed to see a fellow student doing it with such finesse! Colin laughed merrily as the girl's hair turned white and then grew black spots all over it! "Brilliant!" he said with an awed hush. "Looks good on ye, lass!" he complimented Maisie.

Nevermore was up next, and Peri put as much care into the presentation of the mysterious box as he had with the hair changing hex. Colin actually loved to do this! He had gotten a reputation for walking up to a table full of kids in the common room or in the great hall, carefully placing a mysterious box on the table, smirking, then walking away only to observe what would happen next. Colin eagerly waited to see what was in the box! "Oo! Weasleys!" he purred appreciatively. Peri whispered some super secret instructions to the girl. His keen hearing picked up enough to gather that the box contained something sus! Colin smirked. He had a good idea what that something sus might be!

Colin laughed again as Avery got her prize! A singing hex! "Go on Aves! Sing us a song while ye still can! Maybe Pumpkins Marching from the Field?" Cantis --- good choice! This would be a good one to use in a duel! He imagined casting this on Finn Connor, watching him sing silly songs whilst Colin proceeded to set the Gryff on fire!

Then it was Kim's turn! "Prince of Sweets!" Colin said as he leaned in close to Kim. "Who did ye get?" Colin had quite a few chocolate frog cards himself. He was eager to see which one Kim was given. Several other kids showed up for the event, all properly attired in costume. They all chose the mystery ticket, which meant Peri would surely be getting in some more spell practice!

Halloween was one of Mahlioz's more loved special events of the year. It was just the right amount of familiarity and unknown - always the same day, never the same costume - and who could say no to candy? Trick or treating had never been her favourite (she used to just steal from Reltyl's bag), but over time she saw the appeal. A night where you didn't have to be yourself. They didn't need to be nervous asking for treats because they weren't Mahlioz, they were a mighty dragon, or a fairy, or a zombie. Costumes had been comforting, in a way.

Halloween was different at Hogwarts. They hadn't known what to do in their first year, and after a terrifying Halloween party with Qrow in their second year, they had sort of given up on Halloween night. Last year's scary campfire stories on the 30th had been fun, but none of it had the exact vibe they remembered. But when the entire Headliner team had gotten behind a spirit week idea Mahlioz had mentioned once, and when the bird boy decided to hand out tricks and treats on Halloween night itself, well. It sounded absolutely perfect.

It wasn't too much at all - upon arriving, dressed in a very makeshift Enderman costume (it was good for picking out fellow Muggle video game nerds in a crowd and acknowledging how horrible eye contact was - besides, she wanted to pretend she was tall, for once), she could tell it wasn't going to be as chaotic as the second year party. And the atmosphere was on point. Not quite terrifying, not quite cozy, just eerie enough.

The scariest part was having to make a decision. Mahlioz was decidedly bad at that. Perhaps she should have dressed up as Chidi Anagonye from a certain Muggle show. Trick or treat? They normally would tend towards the treat - why take a risk when you could literally have two free chocolate frogs? But then again, they'd recently finally completed their collection, and... they weren't Mahlioz, tonight. They were a particularly bold, tall, dark and handsome pixellated mob. With a ridiculous amount of health, and who could teleport away if there was even possibly a sign of danger. They could risk this. It wouldn't kill them.

"Hello Pericles," she said, approaching him and reaching for a mystery ticket. She wondered whether he'd recognize her under the very big, very cube mask she was wearing. (She had no peripheral vision whatsoever, it was a little unfortunate.) Then again, her Scottish-tinged-with-a-tiny-bit-of-French accent was a little particular. "Merlin, I hope I don't regret this."

It would be difficult to discern if a trick or treat were coming until the verdict passed. Pericles didn't wield his wand, and seemed to find entertainment in letting suspense build, contemplating each ticket with a gleam in his golden eye. When he did cast, he did so with quick gestures and low incantations as though to take his target by surprise. He went so far as to feign reaching for a Weasley box before hurling a Dancing Feet Spell at @Colin McCoire. This fellow Headliner operative would find himself performing right alongside- if not in correlation to- @Avery Gray's singing. @Mylo Atkins fared no better. His bravery would backfire, a gilded number 3 sealing his fate. The host tutted a soft sound of disappointment against the back of his teeth before a Tickling Charm jumped from his fingertips. Assuming he could focus against the maddening tingles, he would hear an apologetic "Better luck next time, captain." @Frederick Buckley would incur the longest lasting "trick" of the lot; Pericles' eyes widened as an ominous 9 was unveiled. He gave his guest a quick once-over, then struck with a Tail-Growing Hex. The result was vividly intentional. Fred developed a whip-like appendage coated in fair beige fur, which ended in a messy medium-brown tuft that mirrored the hair of his head. He would find his newfound lion's tail bobbed, curled, and flicked much as if it was still attached to the animal itself. At least those inflicted would be leaving with a well-deserved compensation treat.

@Tatiana Contraire was having none of that nonsense. She didn't break the unlucky cycle, but instead refused to become a participant in it, primly requesting a chocolate frog. The host inclined his head and indulged her sweet tooth, sending her off with holiday well-wishes. Maybe her luck would win out after all in the form of a new card. @Adeline Spinks' arrival was appraised by the local birdwatcher next. "A magpie- and if I'm recognizing you correctly under those facial plumage patterns, one of our duellists. That was a winning Flipendo you cast against Slytherin," Pear praised. Although he had left the team to pursue racing, he continued keeping tabs on the Murder of Merlin out of both sentimentality and love of the game. "We may be testing your ability to dodge," came a coy warning as she reached for a ticket. Yet fate had decided Adeline had suffered enough spells for the month. Her reward was a box of Exploding Bonbons - "Made with pure cocoa and REAL Coconut Dynamite!"

Pericles caught a glimpse of @Lucille Rosenhart beneath a crimson hood. Her ticket resulted in a treat: a floral Gobstones set resembling smooth clear marbles, each with a different variety of flowerhead within. Rather than ejecting putrid liquid onto unlucky players, they sprayed a jettison of sickeningly sweet perfume. Pericles smiled as he sent her off with the prize- it would have been a shame to hex her after asking so politely. @Lyanna Oak was next in line. The host hung on her selection, waiting to see whether or not someone dressed innocent as an angel would prove to be a risk-taker, and fate rewarded her for it. Hers was a more expensive "treat" for the evening, befitting someone with their chin held as high as hers: a Fanged Frisbee. His smile curled as he remarked, "Not a particularly merciful weapon for an angel."

Last and never least came @Mahlioz Evethisawe. So pleased was Pear to see them that he stepped out from behind he counter, not necessarily swooping in to wrap her in a hug, but just to place himself nearer. His boots could be seen occasionally beneath the hem of the invisibility "poncho", disrupting the ghostly illusion. "Mahl! You've made it, and as...." One eye squinted, its mechanical counterpart glossed over her dark exterior and purple eyes, and he donned the self-assured smirk he wore when cracking a riddle. "...a Hebridean Black, aren't you? I don't expect you're here for a chocolate frog." The coax was a sly one, playfully goading. He knew Mahlioz's curiosity would win out over the straightforward option. Sure enough, she won out with a three-pack of Enchanted Snowballs, "Just in time for the holidays" as Pericles observed.
mod note: all tricks and treats have been distributed, I'm tying the event up here, but you're welcome to mingle amongst yourselves! Happy Hallowgivmas everyone 🎃
