A new friend pet

It had been a rather long day of shopping in Diagon Alley. Althea’s parents had taken her and her brother to buy all of their required school supplies that they would need for the year ahead.

“Wand, uniform, books,” she said as she read her list one last time. “I think I have everything I need.”

“We just have one more stop before we head home,” her mother replied with a gentle smile.

“Wait,” she questioned. “I thought we got everything already.”

“Not everything,” her father said.

“Since your brother got an owl his first year, we only think it’s right to get you a companion as well,” her mother responded.

“Wait, what?” Althea questioned joyfully.

She had not expected this from her parents at all. Growing up, she loved being around animals, but it completely slipped her mind that her parents would buy her one before school. I guess they saw how kind she was to them and decided she deserved one to keep her company.

“Surprise!” her father said as he put his arm around her. “We will go to the shop now to pick one out.”

The family made their way down the bustling streets and stopped just outside of a shop called “The Magical Menagerie.” Althea looked through the windows and saw a variety of adorable animals. She was eager to enter the shop.

As she swung the door open and stepped inside, her gaze was caught by a sweet old couple. The man was rather tall and had a friendly smile on his face. To his left was a shorter woman in a delicate floral dress.

“Welcome!” they said in unison.

“I’m Ernest—” said the man.

“And I’m Anita,” the lady interrupted. “Let us know if you need any help with anything!”

Althea smiled and began to look around at all of the animals. There was an overwhelming choice. One side of the store was full of different species of owls, and the other had a few cats. Near the back were some more animals that she recognized from pictures her mother had shown her.

“We were thinking since Atticus already has an owl, you can just use him to send your post and maybe you can get a cat,” her father said.

“You always had a way with the kitties when you were younger,” her mother replied.

Althea nodded and walked towards the cats. She looked at each one inquisitively, but her eyes lingered on one longer than the rest. It was a little grey cat curled up by herself away from the others. The cat looked up at her with kind eyes, and Althea extended her hand out to pet it. Almost instantly, the cat perked up and started nuzzling into Althea’s hand.

“Aren’t you a sweetheart,” she said to the creature, picking it up gently. “I think you want to come home with me.”

She giggled as the cat rubbed her face against Althea’s, licking her chin.

“Hmm, that’s interesting,” Anita said. “Normally that one is rather shy. Never seen her take a liking to anyone so quickly.”

“Really?” Althea asked. “I guess she chose me then.”

“What will you call her?” her parents questioned.

“Freya,” she replied. “Her name is Freya.”
