@Avery Gray@Cecilia Merrick@Verity Engels 347/200 #36563c xxxClutching her jacket, Rosaline was heading to the Outdoor Club Area. She was excited for this opportunity to play Broom Racing for the first time in her life. It was quite odd that she hadn’t played it before, even though she loved flying, and this was one of the few sports that included flying, other than Quidditch. She had found out about the event several days ago and signed up. Later, she noticed that she almost knew all the people on her team. There were Lucille, Althea, Cecilia, and Avery. The only person she wasn’t familiar with was Maisie, but Rosaline was happy to meet new people.
On the way to the area, she hummed Mariah Carey’s famous song. Shaking her head, wanting to get rid of the catchy melody, but she failed. She chuckled and wondered whether the students who grew up in a wizard household would know the song. Suddenly realized it was late November now. The year will soon be over. Time flew and wouldn’t come back. Rosaline wanted to make sure she didn’t waste her time.
When she arrived at the place, she could see some of her teammates were already there. Lucille was talking to a brunette girl she wasn’t familiar with; she supposed it must be Maisie. And there was Althea, their reliable senior, who worked together in the Drowned Palace. It was quite a memorable memory. Avery was early than her too. Rosaline was glad she had been on the team with her friends and acquaintances. It made her feel more grounded to try the new sport.
She waved to them with a bright smile, “Hello, guys! I can’t wait to start the game.” Her face glowed in excitement. On the opposing team, she spotted a familiar face from her childhood, Verity. Her eyes lit up. Rosaline hoped she would have a chance to catch up with her after the race.
The game seemed about to start any minute. Their moderator, Matilde, announced the start. Rosaline mounted her Comet 180, ready to fly and snatch the win for their team.

── To no one’s surprise, Cecilia was the last of her peers to arrive. Though she joined impulsively, the young witch was very keen to try a new sport. Flying seemed to suit her well, and though her grandmother disapproved of Quidditch, she never explicitly spoke out against broom racing. Though she was fairly certain she would hear about it sooner or later, Cecilia wished to enjoy today without concerning herself with such matters.
When her gaze drifted to Vera, she gave the girl a firm nod of acknowledgement. It was lovely to run into her fellow harpist, even though they were now opponents. Running into friendly, familiar faces seemed to be a rare occurrence nowadays. Which is why Cecilia was delighted to find three more on her team.
She waved at them excitedly as she ran over to join the huddle. There was Lucille, whose radiance warmed more than the sunlight and made the chill more bearable. Then the darling Rosaline, whose beauty had not withered as the cold crept in. And finally, she saw the brilliant Maisie. One could not possibly forget the only sane soul trapped in the drowned palace with her. Guilt gnawed at her for subjecting the poor girl to her quarrels with a certain witch, but she took solace in knowing that today would be different. Her perseverance led Cecilia to believe that if anyone could lead them to victory today, it would be Maisie. And regardless of the outcome, she was simply thrilled to be on her side once more.
Though Cecilia had never met Avery and Althea before, she felt confident that they would be a reliable pair. As each member spoke, she fell silent and began nodding attentively. For a moment, she considered offering applause to Maisie but felt unsure as to whether that would land well – especially after her firm denial of being brilliant during their previous encounter. Instead, she offered a reassuring thumbs-up and a sincere smile.
“I’m ready!” she exclaimed enthusiastically in response to Avery. Her lips stretched into a wide grin before she continued. “Let’s win this!”

Racing through the Scottish Highlands in late November seemed like a brilliant idea. Nothing says fun like high-speed aerial navigation where snow could materialize at any second, all while battling hypothermia and getting slapped by wind that could send you straight to the hospital wing.
But Mamori was bored. Life had becom a monotonous loop between Quidditch training and coursework, or just developing an intimate relationship with the common room furniture, and it had all started feeling like a time prison. At least this way he could legally terrorize some kiddos in the name of sports and remember what being alive felt like. Plus the hospital wing was practically empty with the recent lull in sporting events, which meant that any unfortunate visitors would be given priority treatment and likely make it out by afternoon. The real draw though was those fire-breathing chickens Hogwarts had imported. Sounded badass. He wanted to see it in action.
He intended to cut down the amount of trash talk this time since past events had shown an unwelcome connection between his verbal jabs and opponents' increased accuracy in hitting him. The revised strategy involved channeling his inner wallflower — the beautiful silent introvert type who lurked in corners — until that perfect moment when everyone is off guard and he can come out of his tactical invisibility to execute a superb maneuver that would bring success to the team. A masterpiece of strategic planning, if he did say so himself.
With his hallmark heart-shaped Quidditch goggle securely on, Mamori looked around for the distinctly chicken-free track with a clear letdown and then moved to the gathering circle where all his teammates were standing. The gathering fell under the natural leadership of @Verity Engels whose presence saved everyone from the special brand of awkwardness that comes with forced team bonding. Nobody seemed willing to disclose more than the mere minimum of names — no life stories, house affiliations, broom specifications, or conveniently detailed information about the opposing team members and their weaknesses — which was perfectly in line with his wallflower agenda, as it prompted him to also keep to himself with a simple "I'm Mamori" when it was his turn in the name game.
His commitment to the quiet persona was brought to an end by his chronic inability to shut up when it was time to show off his strategic mind.
Between poorly concealed yawns during others' turns, Mamori frequently interjected into their de facto captain's (because yes, Vera had already been mentally promoted to that position in his mind) strategy discussion with his unfounded yet supremely confident armchair strategist wisdom. Upon the clearly inexperienced brunette @Violence Bloodthorn's comments revealing her desperate need for Broom Racing 101, he graciously dispensed his guide to racing survival: "It's simple really. Just don't die from obstacles or other people trying to kill you, and cross the finish line first. Keep your eyes and ears open. If necessary, use legal or illegal methods to get rid of your competition." The more he thought about it, broom racing wasn't that different from his save duty in Quidditch. Both required constant vigilance with eyes scanning all directions and ears primed for the slightest disturbance on the field, with the only difference being Quidditch involved saving other people's asses while broom racing primarily centered around saving one's own ass.
A sudden snap of fingers jolted him mid-yawn. "Bro you owe me that yawn,” Mamori grumbled in @Aodhan Shaw's direction, trying and failing to recapture the satisfaction of a proper yawn, mouth opened reflexively a few times but the moment was gone. "Ah, you were my teammate in that live-action wizard chess thing." That one chatty outlier in their silent snake pit of a team. A firstie's punch had landed him in the hospital wing that day, where he'd killed time checking rosters and discovering they were indeed two lonely non-Slytherins thrown into a den of six snakes."I'm definitely here to wreck some people, but what about you?" Mamori gestured with his thumb toward the opposing team. The realization had just hit him that beyond Wizard Chess, he'd definitely seen Shaw on the Quidditch pitch. "Don't you have a Quidditch teammate or two over there? Need me to show some selective mercy for the sake of your team dynamics?"xx ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

Watching and moderating a race as it began was very different than being in the midst of the action, Matilde quickly realized. Faster than she could say broomstick, the racers were flying every which (or witch?) way.

"Right off the bat, two well-executed ally-oops from Avery and Zephyr!” Matilde squinted up at the racers from her position on the ground. “There goes Lucille with a wand lighting charm. Will it help her in the coming obstacles?” Matilde watched the light at the tip of the girl’s wand. It was so far bright.

“And the race is off to a dramatic start as three of our racers are already off their brooms!" The two teams seemed to have had similar ideas with the blatches and ally-oops. Matilde couldn’t ever remember seeing a race with so many all at once. She wasn’t sure if anyone was really listening to her game commentary, but a few kids were gathering in the bleachers to watch. They might as well give them a show.

"Lucille Rosenhart of the Calendula Rams has taken the lead, Verity Engals and Mamori Anezaki not far behind." In some races, one team took the lead right away. For today's race, it didn't seem so clear. In both teams, the majority of racers hadn't moved too far beyond the beginning of the race distance-wise. This early in the race, of course, it was anyone's game.

morning
Her duelling instincts told her to fire a spell at someone. Racing allowed a wider spell variety than Duelling. Yet, as Vera looked at her opponents and mentally listed out the spells she had, she couldn't figure out what she really wanted to hit them with. The Sneezing Hex? Curse of the Bogies? Maybe the Fire-Making Spell?
Indecision was going to be the death of her, though. Vera looked around. The other Hufflepuff in her year, Zephyr, took the Ravenclaw girl's broom and tossed her as she shot forward, just as Vera suggested before they took off. The older Gryffindor boy headed for the opposing team. The older Hufflepuff, Mamori, took off. As for Percival, it seemed running late frazzled his nerves. Not that Vera held it against him.
Well, when in doubt, just fly. Vera leaned forward, turning her head just to shout "Come on, Percy!" before following Violence and Mamori.
Unfortunately, Violence didn't get very far as the other team also had their sights on them, leaving Vera to fly alongside Mamori. Vera also heard a few more people falling and hitting the ground. She looked back, grimacing at the sight. Two of her teammates were knocked off.
But there's a saying that goes, don't look back, which Vera failed to remember as she hit the side of a narrow passageway. Vera swore, then quickly redirected her room into the passageway as she followed her teammate and one other racer, presumably from the other team. There were a few more bumps as they exited the tunnel, but there was hardly any time to recover. The passageway led into a dense forest. Vera tried to direct her broom as swiftly as she could between the trees, but she wasn't used to the speed coupled with the obstacles as she hit one on her way out.
The broom slowed down, to which Vera breathed a sigh of relief. Nevermind the fact that her opponent still had enough speed to go an extra mile. She looked down at her robe, sighing at the loose threads and tears developing in the fabric. She just had the robe mended after the disaster that was her duel against Gryffindor a month ago.
"Well, that's not the worst thing that's happened to me, but it's definitely up there." Vera shrugged. A breeze brushed past her as Mamori also slowed. Vera looked up. "Are you alright? Sounded like you hit your head pretty hard on the rocks earlier."

It worked. Avery had never done an Alley Oop before. Alley Oops were a move Seekers rarely did if at all on the Quidditch pitch. The move was more a move for Chasers than anything. Though Avery knew that she had to perform it with Rosaline and perform it correctly in order to get her team moving forward. Even if it meant she didn't catch up with the rest of everyone else. She knew it would be worth it in the end if her team she was competing with lasted through the entire competition. Things like this were far from easy.
That was why Avery was shocked the move had worked. She watched as her team skyrocketed ahead of herself as the race began. Avery was stuck at the entrance for now. Waiting for her moment to shine. Though she didn't know when that would be, she knew she would be ready to go when that time came.
She watched as the race unfolded before her. Wincing as people fell off their brooms. She knew from experience falling off at a high speed hurt, and hurt a lot. Honestly she believed it hurt more than most people realized. People that had never actually ridden a broom in a race of a match before.

The Deep End

Violence and brute force were rarely Althea’s first solution to any situation. Not only did the idea of it make her shrink and wince due to her family's values, who were staunch advocates for passivity, but she also simply lacked the ability to exert an effective level of violence and strength to get the job done in the first place. The strategy meeting and the concluding decision remained vivid in her memories. The plan was simple, seventy-percent fool-proof, and mostly banked on luck and sheer will-power. It was precisely that line of thought that caused Althea’s hands to grip her borrowed broom as tight as she could without splintering the poor wood at the starting line of their unofficial broom race. She was ridiculously nervous for an ungraded game. Needles of the November cold sank into and prickled her skin. Glancing at her team, she pinched the back of her hand and steeled her resolve. "Nothing could not forfeit in the name of victory and a good time," as her godfather often said.
As soon as the race began, Althea stilled for a moment in waiting. The second she caught the glimpse of her teammates whizzing past out of range, she shot forward, sharply swerving towards her target. WHACK! Her tensed shoulder slammed into the brunette opponent - Violence Bloodthorn, her team had informed her. How ironic. Slipping out of the danger zone once the job was done, Althea stabilised herself and continued forward. In front of her, two opponent racers zipped through the tracks, and Rosaline was still in her line of sight as she successfully cast a Lumos for what was ahead. Lucille being out of sight was a good call. She bit her lip as players roughly crashed to the ground behind her. She flew forward, narrowing her focus to the track ahead. Apologies and bribes could come later.

── “Wee!” Cecilia exclaimed as she kicked off from the ground. Flying was always liberating, but something felt different today. Feeling the wind whipping through her hair seemed more thrilling now that she could fly faster. The grin plastered on her face stretched wider as she soared into the sky. Unfortunately, this moment – like any other – was fleeting.
A muggle once warned that anything capable of going wrong, inevitably would. Upon witnessing Cecilia’s botched execution of blatching, a few broom racers – and spectators – would be more likely to heed that adage. Though in her defence, she lacked significant experience with forcefully ramming her broom into another. Whether it was form or finesse, the lack of proper technique was evident. Panic seeped in as Cecilia drew near her target and whirled just a moment too soon. She flinched, shoulders tightening as she braced for an impact that never came.
“Zut!1” she hissed, fingers clutching on the broom shaft as the realisation finally dawned on her. She never expected violence to come naturally to her, but she was the only Ram who failed to land her blow. It was all too pathetic. Alas, this was no time for Cecilia to lament over her poor aim. The sharp thwack of brooms and bodies colliding drew her attention, reminding her to remain alert. The race had only begun, and she had not even passed the first peril. Though Cecilia did not know what awaited her, she was determined to press on with her fellow Rams.
