The noise that came out of Nick's throat was a mixture of surprise and fear, he didn't actually expect to hit someone with a spell, and it showed in his face. "I... I did it?" He mumbled, so completely surprised at himself.
"I can't believe I actually did it..." He actually hit someone, and he wasn't entirely sure how he felt about it just yet.

Aislin pointed her wand vaguely in the direction of the Hufflepuffs, sneezed again, and thought for a second that maybe Costanza and Minnie were aiming at her, in which case she was probably about to be on fire again. And she did not really want to be on fire, nor did she want to see how wildly off-course a spell could fly if she timed it wrong with the magical sneezing fit, so she pulled back her wand for a second and kept light on her toes, like hopping between stones at the creek behind her house.
She felt bad about it, though, once she realized neither of them had attacked her after all. They'd gone for Nicholas instead, catching his clothes with a fire worse than what had found Aislin's shoulder, and just a second again he'd been... apologizing? Aislin didn't entirely understand what was going on with him, but he looked unhappy. Which was probably the fire now, but he hadn't been on fire a minute ago, and he'd sounded unhappy then, too. Was she supposed to do something about that, as team co-captain? Maisie had complimented the cast--she was right, it was a solid Flipendo--so maybe that was the way to help. With one and a half thumbs up (it wasn't exactly a gesture intended to be done with a wand in hand), she told him, "Aye, keep at it." This wasn't such a bad first match for them so far, and her opinion on that was technically professional.

Well things hadn't gotten better exactly. Alina took two hits this time and while it was nice seeing the first year boy on fire, it would have been even more swell if he was forced to dance too. Costanza cursed under her breath for missing the shot, then cursed at Alina for not doing anything. Everyone was back in the action and Alina was proving to be a tricky target for the Ravenclaws. Starkly different from their attempt at eviscerating her a few bouts ago, the eagles continued to switch their strategies up in their quest to take her out. Nicholas continued firing Knockback Jinxes at her, while Aislin chose to make it harder for her to dodge instead of maxing out on her damage capabilities. Neither spell could hit the badger though as Alina left the blindfold on her eyes and instead put her focus on avoiding what was coming to her.
Trusting her team to handle Alina, Maisie tried conjuring another blindfold, but this time her wand pointed towards Costanza - a smart choice considering what the badger pulled off not a second later. Avoiding Maisie’s blindfold, Costanza unleashed another set of crackers and managed to catch all three eagles in its radius, with Nicholas taking the brunt of the tiny explosions. They added to the flames afflicting him, but Aislin’s sneezes wore off before it could inhibit her too badly. Last to cast was Minnie whose Flipendo glanced off Nicholas’ hip. It was strong enough to knock him to the side, but not enough to spell out an inevitable trip to the hospital wing.

And here we were: in the inevitable, looming duelling moment of everything going wrong. The crackers exploded on the three of them and nothing at all hit. Maisie looked over at the first years and felt—what had she called it?—déjà trois as again it was a spell she didn't know that spelled the end.
One thing was clear: Maisie Gemmell was bad luck.

At first the suggesting to leave the blindfold on sounded crazy. Well, okay, that wasn't exactly what was said, but the more and more she thought about it, the more she realized trying to evade the next spells by leaving it on, sounded like a better idea to throw the Ravenclaws off guard. She managed to avoid the dancing feet spell---again---as well as a knockback jinx. Which she sure as heck wasn't looking to get hit with again.
And it sounded like her partners were doing some damage too. There was a bunch of popping almost like little fire crackers. It sounded promising, but it wasn't like she could see what was actually going on.

Thinking through strategies, contingencies, and patterns was tricky at this point, what with everything compounding and while she was still sneezing. Aislin at least knew this: she had to help Nicholas this time, and Maisie had succeeded in blindfolding Alina (at least, sort of). Maybe she could make Alina dance, a rhythmic tap dance to turn her movements more predictable, and then Nicholas could land another solid jinx.
But she missed, and Nicholas missed, and Maisie was focusing elsewhere but Aislin was pretty sure she missed, too. Mostly she knew the sudden, bright presence of exploding wizard crackers that were somehow everywhere, which seemed a little harsh on a relatively narrow stage. She glanced at her teammates to find that Nicholas looked bad and Maisie looked worried. It was definitely bad if Maisie looked worried. Her attempts at strategy were replaced by an inkling of dread, just trying to blink the spots out of her eyes.

And as quickly as it came, his hope was snuffed away by another missed attack, he groaned quietly to himself and closed his eyes tightly.
"This is going... Just like how I expected.." Because after all, how dare he expect himself to get any of this right. Maybe joining the duel team was a bad idea after all.
