As they walked out to the lake, Kayden felt his insides getting warm. I'm such an idiot. I really brought her out here but don't have anything to say? The rising sun made a good setting however, as they began walking by the lake. His mind raced as he thought of something to say. Just don't make it awkward. He instructed himself. He could do this. Definitely. Probably. Ok fine. He hoped he could do it. He didn't expect anything to happen, after all, she was a Ravenclaw, and he was a Gryffindor. And while separate huse romances were not unheard of, they were rare at best. But who knows. They could be one of those cases. He realized that they weren't talking, and that the only sounds was that of their feet hitting the ground. He decided he would have to initiate conversation. "So." He began, trying to sound friendly. "What was life like before Hogwarts for you? Bet you had some good parents." He meant this as a compliment, but his mind raced to s million ways this could be seen as an insult.
God, why am I such an idiot? He began fidgeting with his fingers, then stopped. He wanted to seem calm and collected in front of her.

Sage sucked in a breath of fresh air through her nose when it hit her face and she felt a bit calmer than before. But she never thought she'd be walking at her favorite place with a cute boy. She didn't know that this was possible, she didn't find herself cute or attractive at all since she was a ginger. She fidgeted with her friendship bracelet on her wrist as she looked around with a soft smile.
When he spoke she felt a bit relieved and smiled at him "I'm actually Muggle-Born so my parents don't really like me very much now. But I had a little sister named Delilah and she was the cutest little girl ever." Sage giggled a bit. "Life before Hogwarts was good, I had a few good friends. Although if I hadn't come to Hogwarts then I wouldn't have met my friends now, or even you" she looked at him and smiled softly, trying to seem nice and trying to keep both of them calm. So far it was working and so she was curious for the future, wondering how things would turn out between them and what other kinds of people she'd meet while here.

Her smile relaxed him a bit. He decided that he could trust Sage. She seemed nice, and intelligent, quite friendly as well. So he decided to open up his most vulnerable place of his life to her. This would either go really good, or really bad. He took a deep breath and began. "I'm happy for you. I wish I could say the same. My mom died in childbirth, and my dad was so grief- stricken, he left me. He thought that if he put away everything that reminded him of mom, she would somehow disappear from his mind. I never met him, but when I was sent to live with my grandparents, they told me he was a fine man. It was a strange relationship they had, my mother and father. I'm a half blood, my mother was a witch, and she was criticized heavily by the normal community. My father decided to look past differences, and focus on who people really are. I could admire that. My grandfather passed away when I was five, and I've been living with my grandmother. She was sad I had to go, but she assured me she was happy that I would be where I belonged."
He smiled at her, then stopped. He didn't want to overload her with information, nor did he want her to think he was a weirdo.

"Aw I'm sorry Kayden. Things happen to us for a reason, my mother told me that it was to only make us stronger, whether it was good or bad. You're a good person though, you're a lot like your father if he is who you're grandparents said he was, looking past differences and stuff. I mean I'm a red-headed Muggle-Born witch, you definitely looked past that big difference." She smiled at him again, trying to comfort him. "Besides, it's not like you can't visit your grandmother during Christmas or during the Summer. Who knows? Maybe she'd let me stay with you guys during a holiday break, it could be fun." She tried to give him hope, something she was good at doing.
Sage was a good listener and was willing to listen to people's problems and offer any advice she could. Anyone from a mile away could see she was a kind girl, and a wise girl as well. She was a good friend, although she'd never admitted to herself that she was too good of a friend. Sages words comforted him. "Thanks Sage." Kayden had a question on his mind, but his anxiety prevented him from asking. Instead, they made small talk about the weather, the professors here at Hogwarts, and discussing similar interests. Every so often Sage would smile, and every time she did so, it was like a natural response to Layden, he would feel like he was on top of the world.Every single time.
The subject of the Valentine's Day dance rolled around in his mind, and Kayden wondered if it would be wise of him to ask. It's not like any other girl would go with him, he barely knew anyone but Willow and Sage. And Willow was more of a good friend.

During the small talk, Sage knew that her smiles were making him more comfortable so she did it a lot. After the mention in the Ballroom about the Valentine's day dance, she got more and more nervous as she thought about if he'd ask her to it. That's when he asked her: "So.... The Valentine's Day dance. Have you found a date yet?"
She let out a breath and looked at him, just as a soft breeze blew their way and moved a few strands of hair in her face. She looked ahead of her and flipped her hair over her shoulder with her head before looking back at him "I have not, I'm too scared of rejection if I ask anyone. Plus I haven't really met any boys who would want to ask me anyways. Since again, I'm so different from everyone else, with my mixed accent and being a red-headed Muggle-born student. Why do you ask?" She asked him, looking at him with another wide smile as if she knew that he wanted to ask her; as if daring him to ask her and see what she would say. Of course, she would say yes, it was then she realized that she had a crush on him. That's why she always had butterflies and was almost always blushing and nervous, and having sweaty palms.

Kayden breathed an inward sigh of relief. How had no one asked her yet? Anyone who would look closer than the surface would find an intelligent, kind, and caring girl. Who was beautiful, but that was an added bonus. Kayden preferred personality over looks. Why do you ask? Kayden looked over at her, and from the smile on her face, Kayden thought she already knew.

"I'm not the strongest or best-looking guy out of the bunch. I know I'd probably be your 9th or 10th choice, but... Would you consider going to the dance with me?" She heard him ask her.
In shock, she looked at him with the widest smile "of course I'll go with you. And honestly Kayden, you look like the bravest person I know. I can see why you're in Gryffindor. Also, you'd be my first choice. You're kind and sweet, you make me nervous in a way I never have been which never happens. Plus, I think you're hair is cute" she giggled nervously and ruffled her hand through his hair in a playful way. She hadn't noticed that they had stopped walking and when she looked at the horizon, the sun hit her red hair in such a different way that it didn't look real would she thought it would make an amazing picture.
She watched the sunrise and smiled, entering her happy place. Closing her eyes she grabbed Kayden's hand and sucked in a deep and happy breath as the morning breeze blew across her face and she smiled widely. She stood closer and wrapped her hands around his arm as she opened her eyes and put her head on his shoulder as she continued to watch the sun rise.

Kayden felt a sense of renewal. Courage? Me? Her words really did assure him. Which was odd, for words meant almost nothing to him anymore. His heart leapt as she grabbed his hand, intertwining their fingers. The sunrise was the perfect backdrop, as she set her head on his shoulder.
She likes me. Like, for real. The rays of the sunrise reached Sages red hair, glinting off of it. It casted an amazing atmosphere. He wanted to stay like this forever, but he knew that couldn't happen. So he would make the most of it while it lasted. The sun shone off of the lake, casting almost a spotlight on them. There was nobody on the courtyard or the lake, and nobody was practicing Quidditch a few fields over which meant they were alone. Completely alone. And to be honest, that's how Kayden wanted it. Nobody to judge a Ravenclaw and a Gryffindor. Nobody to tell the, to stop, or to stare and create rumors. They would be able to do this every morning perhaps, before breakfast and lessons. Pushing her red hair back, he kissed her softly on the forehead. In that instance, he could've sworn he saw a ghost cooing from outside of the courtyard.

Sage wasn't expecting him to kiss her forehead, but she hoped that they could do this every morning before school. Just the two of them. The way he held her made her feel special, and she was okay with that. She felt accepted for who she was and didn't have to worry about other people. She was nervous beyond belief though, but she was comfortable around Kayden, she didn't expect her crush to grow into something more, and she didn't think that he liked her.
