Case No. 01: Reconnaissance PV Pericles

	When Pericles unveiled the letter during dinner, it inadvertently became the centerpiece for an impromptu family meeting. The heir, his father, and his grandmother passed it between themselves as they discussed a course of action. While none among them disagreed to the call, each advocated for a different approach. Due to the potentially dangerous nature of Howard's mission, Isaac insisted on sending a bird from their family's personal roost, nominating an old falcon with tested tracking capabilities. Widow Tamasa suggested they send an owl or peregrine, either of which would be better suited to an after-dark assignment. Pericles ultimately insisted he had a suitable candidate in mind and would tackle the affair himself. Since his seventeenth birthday the month prior, the young warlock wielded his newfound independence with wild bravado. It was a classic case of just-reached-adulthood rebellion. He had run off to get a tattoo, splurged assets on a small property, and- as of tonight- was about to moonlight as an assistant tracker. The only trouble was, his family weren't the only ones unawares of this intention. Howard's owl was pampered as payment for its journey, though the flight from Plymouth to London wouldn't be all too daunting. The bird would return Pericles' response within the day. Opening with enthusiastic pleasantries, his former schoolmate's letter assured Howard that the club would be proud to assist, confirming the dispatch of a bird by sundown. A faint rustle of wings announced its arrival. Having spied its target mid-flight, a pale eagle alighted an overhead perch. Its shadow sent squirrels diving from the tree. Its head turned one way and the other, affirming Howard's face, first with a glossy black eye then a glinting gold prosthetic. With an affirmative chirp, the eagle launched from the branch as a blur of black and gray. Pericles took its place on the earth below. The Ravenclaw had changed substantially since their Headliner interview in his second year, or since they allied on the Hexwizard team in his fifth. He had sprouted up to five-foot-ten and replaced his right eye with an enchanted mechanism. Yet some things remained the same: Peri was as ever prepared (or perhaps, concerningly, eager) for misadventure. His aspen wand was sheathed in a holster on his hip, and the folds of his dark hiking ensemble obscured a bandolier of potions. Although his features had grown angular, his smile still carried the soft absentness it always had, with the same ceaselessly polite way of speaking. "Hullo Howard. It's good to see you again." Those mismatched eyes creased at the corners, a hint at genuine warmth while he reached for a handshake. "I've brought your bird, if you'll have me? Your letter suggested you may need more help than the average hawk could offer."

Description: The white-bellied sea-eagle is recognized by its contrasting plumage, with a crisp white body and ash-grey wings. Its legs are armored in cream-colored scales and end in wicked talons. Its beak is like a blade: steely, curved and cutting. His body is two and a half feet long with a six-foot wingspan. What sets Pericles' animagus form apart from the average eagle is its distinctive marking: soft grey "freckle" spots across his cheek feathers. Pericles first bonded with the bird as a child learning falconry, cementing a fascination for raptors that would last a lifetime.

Howard laid low as he awaited the arrival of his companion, allowing his heightened sense to acclimate to his surroundings. His crimson eyes scanned to a fro. As a nocturnal predator the shadows were his ally and as the sun dipped below the horizon his eye sight remained razor sharp. A gentle breeze passed through his nostrils and as it did Howard picked up on the markers in the air. Any shift in the atmosphere would most likely be smelled first before he put eyes on it. So, the slight rustling of wings above him could have served as an announcement of arrival, but Howard had smelled Peri first.

Looking to the branch above Howard saw the sea eagle perched and awaiting confirmation. The next moment the raptor launched from its spot and the next moment Pericles stood before him. With clawed fingers Howard would gladly accept the handshake that was offered and breathed a sigh of relief that he now had an ally in tow. It still came as a double take when he took in Peri's prosthetic eye, but the two of them had changed much since they had first met. Gone were the childish aspirations of youth and before them now the realities of adulthood. Danger lurked in the forest and evil was near. A call to action reached Howard's sprint and it seemed that Pericles too felt the same sense of duty. They were childhood friends, but perhaps they would leave tonight brothers in arms.

"Good to see you too, Peri." While the Ravenclaw's outfit concealed quite the armory, Howard had come armed with weapons of his nature and his trusty broom. The wand sheathed into his belt was merely a second thought, but he sure was happy to have such a talent by his side. He himself was a ferocious opponent with both claw and fang, yet he was no master of the arcane. "I'll need your help for sure. I've tracked two of them and the animal to this location, but I need help pinpointing them." Howard's letter had explained the situation. Two poachers and a drake hidden in the forest. They needed to be surveilled and possibly apprehended, but what was most important was to try and find evidence on the crime syndicate as a whole and who they were supplying.

"We can go about this however you'd like, but one last warning, Peri. This could get heavy." Howard was willing to confront these people if necessary. They deserved a one way ticket to Azkaban and he was happy to check their bags for them.

	Their hands clasped and a shudder arced up his arm, the dhampire's innate intimidation plucking a chord on his psyche. It was a familiar feeling to one raised by a vampire, interpreted not as a threat, but rather as a means to sharpen his senses. Howard's aura was a reminder of who he was working with, and Pericles was grateful to be on the same side. He smiled in spite of the tracker's warning. Though he respected the gravity of their situation, certainty shone through, eliminating all shadows of doubt. "I'm not in the habit of leaving jobs half-done. I'll do what I can to help." If their mission ended in apprehension, he was all for it, but it would begin with reconnaissance. Between the eagle's vantage and the dhampire's senses, tracking the poachers down would be light work. Gaining an advantage against them while going unnoticed would be the true challenge. When again he took wing, the pale bird dipped above and below the treeline intermittently. His strange glare was peeled for telltale signs: tracks or disturbed flora, smoke from a campfire, manmade detritus or wyvern dung. Silence stood out most of all- an area of woods without nightsong as its animal occupants hid from intruders.

Howard offered a solemn nod when Peri made his claim. A call of duty had brought them here today and with it came the acknowledgment of the dangers entailed. The wizarding world was not at war, but they stood before each other like soldiers preparing for a mission. Agents of good looking to remove an injustice from the world no matter what was to come. "Let's get it done. Signal me if you find them and I will make first approach. Be ready." With that Howard would stow his broom into his enchanted backpack and crouch low as he began to stalk his prey.

Pericles would shift back into animal form and take to the tree lines above. Howard could not transfigure himself in such a way, but his movements became more animalistic than human. He crouched low and scurried through the underbrush with an ease and a silence that mimicked a wild cat tracking an antelope. Though Howard's night vision offered him an advantage he would have to rely on Peri to spot the poachers with a chance to remain undetected. The dhampir paused for a moment and allowed a deep breath to rush through his nostrils. He knew Pericles was still near and the reptile's scent grew stronger too. They were close.

Crushed it!

The young man always had a knack for observation. In both human and animal form his one good eye rarely overlooked even the smallest of details and a faint wisp of campfire smoke caught his gaze. With a shift in his wingspan his flying would slow as talons found branch. Eagle vision would look down upon their targets. With a vantage point now gained a soft coo would be all the signal Howard needed.

The dhampir dropped even lower as he began to crawl towards Peri's call. Then he came upon it. Like a mirage in the dessert the space before him was slightly distorted. As if he was looking through a thin layer of film. One more shift forward and he would breech the enchantment. The hairs on his neck would stand on end as he waited a moment for signs discovery, but he was fortunate enough that the magic was simply illusionary. As quiet as he could, Howard lifted himself back into a crouch just high enough that he could gain a clear line of sight. Before him sat their targets around the campfire and not too far off was their tent. It would be easy enough to try and jump these two, but that would also risk the destruction of evidence. So, Howard attempted to move around behind them.

	Pericles confirmed the command with a nod, nothing more. He and Howard seemed to share both a clear understanding and shared drive. When the bird spotted the smoke, it careened off track, swooping along the edges of the encampment. No enchantments nor alarms triggered as he hopped from one tree to the next, verifying Howard's course was clear. It would be easy to pass off a trip as an error caused by a wild bird. When none sounded and he was confident the path was open, the eagle contributed a croaked "Awk-awk" to the background noises of nature. It perched above the poacher's tent to claim a view of the grounds around it. Their targets were perfectly ignorant of their arrival, and Howard was frightfully stealthy. Sneaking out evidence was a simple task for the two. If they'd wanted to leave the mission at that, they could have retreated then and there to celebrate their success. Yet Pericles and Howard were completionists. Rather than risk the poachers slipping away, it stood to reason that they do everything in their power to detain them and put and end to their torture of innocent beasts. Evidence wasn't enough. They wanted to find and free the drake. Only when Pericles was confident that Howard was in the clear did he change his position, swooping out of sight before resuming wizard form in the dark of the woods. Wand in hand, crouched low in the bushes, he aimed at the duo illuminated by firelight and whispered "Petrificus Totalus!"

Practice, natural talent, predatory instincts. A perfect storm of technique that made Howard especially skilled for stalking and ambushing prey. Thank Merlin he was on the side of good as he silently made his way around the poachers and to the back of their tent. With more practiced silence, the dhampir would look around the dwelling for any evidence that could be used against these thugs. It would have been easier if the pair in question were a couple of muggles as the outward appearance of the tent made it seem like this would be an easy task. Leave it to wizard-kind to complete things though. Once through the flap of the tent Howard would see a space the size of a flat. No time to waste though. He couldn't leave Peri alone if things kicked off outside.

Heard skipped over the sleeping area as that was both an offense to eye and nose. Wash your damn socks, man! But then he spotted what he was looking for. There on a makeshift desk was a red, leather-bound journal of sorts. The ledger! No matter how talented you may be with a wand, no matter how sinister your deeds were, if you wanted to make a profit you better keep good books. This type of account had slipped through his grasp in the previous encounter with this poaching ring, but Howard would not allow for the destruction of evidence this time. No, he was going to bring this whole seedy empire down!

The flash of a spell from outside the tent temporarily illuminated the area. Peri must have found the perfect moment to get the drop on the bastards. Howard zoomed out of the tent to join his ally.

Howard arrived just in time to see Peri's spell split in two. "Look out!" Billy Bag's called out to his partner in crime and was just able to avoid being hit by the fully body bind curse, but Darian was too slow. The part-giant seized and fell forward from his seat with a thud into the dirt. Howard didn't waste a moment. His long legs propelled him forward, he lunged with claws curled into fists. The punch would target the back of the giant's head. Not a lethal blow, but one that hoped to incapacitate. Billy wouldn't be left out of the fray though as he set his steely gaze on Pericles. "FLIPENDO!"

The campsite would rapidly evolve into a battlefield! Good versus evil. A tale as old as time, but a fight that must always be fought. The part-giant would take the full blow of Howard's fist before breaking out of the binding curse and while Billy would look to exact some revenge his spell would narrowly miss Pericles. Howard and his ally had the advantage of surprise, but could they hold it?!

	As a boy, Pericles remembered nodding off to tales from his father's Auror days. Altercations such as these always rang like death-defying feats of combat, wherein room for error spanned the breadth of a matchbox. His approach was sensible in thought: impair the targets, disarm them, then graciously suggest a forfeit. Only, reality wasn't bound to even the best-laid plans. One of his attacks was evaded, the other was soon nullified, and Pear scrambled to mentally move past the setback. When Billy sprang up to sound the alarm, the eagle recognized him from the files Howard shared. Of the two, he was said to be more a threat with his wand. The warlocks honed in on one-another. Pericles had dodged enough Flipendos in his duelling days to recognize when one was coming, and this one was no different, evaded by a swift lurch to the side. His Body-Bind Curse bought Howard enough time to land a solid blow on the back of Darian's skull. From the sound of it, the blow would have put the average wix out cold, but part-giants were made of sturdier stuff. He and Howard needed an advantage, and Peri was determined to yield one. A hissed "Nebulus" was all which forewarned his intent to plunge them into a deep fog.

Battlefields were chaotic places. Adrenaline pumped, orders were shouted, screams of pain filled the air. Right away it could become overwhelming to a soldier as the shock to the nervous system could plant them in place like an old oak tree, but those that could overcome it would eventually find a flow. Their feet almost began to dance as they positioned and repositioned around each other. Bodies would move and sway as attacks were launched and assaults were dodged. The lights and crackles of arcane energy providing the beat and lighting up the dance floor. It was everything that Hogwarts had prepared them for. Howard and his ally Pericles were rising to the occasion. Before them stood injustice. Its dark and suffocating shadow ever present no matter how small the transgression. In times like this it is choice that makes all the difference. For each time someone stands up for what is right, they send forth a small ripple of hope that can change the world.

Pericles was a smart combatant. He knew well that Howard and he were capable, but they were going against hardened criminals and they would need every advantage. With a harsh whisper his incantation would bring forward a targeted blanket of fog that would rapidly envelope their foes. Their shouts of panicked blindness was all Howard needed to hear before he jumped back into the action.

Howard and Pericles had more than one advantage up their sleeve. While the conjured fog would limit most people in their ability to target, they could both see through magical impairment just fine! Howard sprinted forward and with mighty leap he would land a flying kick right into the chest of Billy Baggs! With a shout of pain the wizard would crumble for a moment as the wind was knocked from his lungs. While this temporarily disabled Billy from the fight it would not stop his partner in crime from lashing out at our heroic duo.

Though the mighty half-giant would launch a rock with enough force to shatter bones, his impairments proved to be too much as the stone cracked a nearby tree in half. Howard and Pericles were safe...for now.

	Years of duelling had taught Pericles how to target an obscured opponent. The cloud of fog was reminiscent of a nest from his tarantula collection: when watching closely, he could pinpoint disturbances in the veil, and aimed where he estimated his enemies stood. Accuracy wasn't a problem. Splitting his spells, however, put a strain on his will. While he knew he would be more likely to succeed in targeting one enemy at a time, urgency drove him to take a risk. Pericles flinched when a boulder broke from the cloud and exploded against a nearby tree. He'd bought Howard cover, though only so much danger could be evaded when in arm's reach of an enraged part-giant. They needed to make this quick. If he could sap their willpower, he hoped, the pair might be pressured to forfeit. The warlock's wand flitted a rapid shape as he incanted "Surpo Energia." If his spell landed, the smugglers would find their energy drained by the second, suffering one of the darker hexes Pear hadn't put to practice on another living being. This was a far cry from those highly structured stage duels. Only their morality dictated the rules out here, and he didn't expect criminals to pull their punches nor stick by pre-approved spells.
