Liz Carver had lovingly crafted an outfit for her daughter's school ball. Sinclair's mother was not a professional seamstress, but once she knew just what the other students were wearing to school events, she let her passion for historical fashion take over. Dark wool with silk lapels made up a tailored second hand tailcoat gifted from a family friend who worked in theatre. Glossy opera pumps and a top hat were hunted from a vintage charity shop. A white waistcoat, wingtip shirt, and bowtie were sewn from scratch and starched by Liz over several weeks.

The Gryffindor recalled her mother dressing her up near the end of July, telling her to humour her and give a twirl. Sinclair, of course, did just that. Her mother, beaming with pride, had told her how wonderful she looked. "Like a miniature Fred Astaire", she chuckled, but added that there still were some finishing touches she had to make.

Then came August and that phone call. The trip to the hospital. The open caskets. How could Liz be in any state of mind to finish that white tie outfit?
"I'll send it to you, dear. Mum just needs a little bit of time, okay?"
"You don't need to finish it, I don't expect it considering what happened and I don't have to attend..."
"Don't be silly... You should enjoy yourself. I promise, you will have it in time."
Finding no energy to argue, Sinclair accepted it with a quiet "Thank you", despite having sore feelings towards attending.

---
The Spring Ball already had been a bit of a disappointment, and now dressed in her mother's hard work, Sinclair watched with disinterest as the venue filled with people. She kept her top hat folded under her arm, not quite bothered to wear it. Some students were paired up, some in their own groups, socialising. She had come with no one, nor did she expect to pair up or mingle.

The only reason I'm here is so that Mum's outfit and efforts aren't wasted. I don't quite have any other purpose here...

Sinclair had some food, enjoyed the scenery a little, and walked around with a teacup and saucer. She kept her gaze avoidant around others, minded her own business, and was not keen to socialise or give any sign that she was open for conversation. Light hazel eyes observed her peers from afar, and she couldn't help but think of two other students she would have loved to come to this ball with. She pursed her lips, and for a fraction of a moment caught a glimpse of that familiar ghostly blonde hair...
No... She was mistaken. Sinclair shoved her hand into the pocket of her pants with a light scoff at herself, turned on her heel, and left with her tea.

In the absence of her previous friends and a lack of new ones, she found that she felt nothing but their absence. She followed a small path down to the side of the lake, where she brushed off some moss from a large rock and sat down, setting aside her empty teacup and saucer. Fog drifted on the lake's surface, and gentle ripples brushed over rounded rocks at the bank. It was peaceful, and normally she'd simply enjoy being alone but now...she just felt lonely.

Sinclair popped her top hat open and pressed it flat several times, fidgeting in consideration before she set it aside. She picked up a rock, and glumly skipped it across the water's surface. And another. And.. another. Her expression twisted into a mixture of disgust, discomfort, and embarrassment at herself.
Boy...do I feel pathetic.
A twinge of frustration bubbled up, and on impulse she flung the tea saucer into the water, only to immediately regret it.

Adeline lingered unamused near the decaying balustrade, her sailor's hat cradled in her arms, the music from the dance floor echoing faintly into the cool night air. Blue lantern light trembled on the lake below, softly melting into silvery mist. She’d been absentmindedly watching the reflections rather than the dancers, whenever she caught her eye.
First, the uncharacteristic rippling of water, then, a top hat cast aside a slender figure sat lakeside. Even from a distance, she recognized the stone-skipping, moon-bathed silhouette.
Sinclair.
Adeline hesitated, gaze lowering to her black patent shoes, then back to the lonely figure below. The sight of Sinclair skipping stones, then flinging a tea saucer into the water struck something in the girl that she couldn't fully grasp. In a way, this is the kind of thing she had been waiting to happen all night- something worth remembering.
Without quite realizing it, she was half-way across the boat dock, bumping into faceless obstacles as she pushed her way through the crowded dance floor. Adeline did her best to avoid slamming into tables as she ran through the pearl draped dining room, offering polite but nervous smiles to arriving guests as she slid past them with little grace.
Her skirts gathered in one hand, she slipped down the sloping path leading from the old boat to the lakes edge, steps growing softer on the grass. The closer she got to the girl, the clearer the small, brittle details became. The uncharacteristic slump of Sinclair’s usually sharp shoulders, the half-unraveled bowtie. Adeline hadn't realized it before, but something was off with the Gryffindor girl.
She paused. “Sinclair?” Adeline’s voice broke through the hush.
Breathless from the short run, curls escaping the ribbon at her neck, she continued to fill the awkward silence. “You..you look like you walked out of an old muggle film... even more than usual.” she joked softly, an unsure smile flickering as she did her best to gauge the girl's emotion. She held her shaky breath as she awaited Sinclair's response to her sudden intrusion.
This was becoming a pattern.

Of course, Sinclair heard the pitter patter of someone's feet heading towards where she sat by the lake. The footsteps were not heavy, so she deduced it was possibly a girl. She shut her eyes briefly and pressed her forehead into her palm, as if she could will the universe to make the person decide to direct their curiosity elsewhere. The forest nearby and the autumn ball's creatures and participants hummed with magic and the unknown. As much as she tried to get used to it, her intuition prickled her skin and made her too aware of her surroundings, causing a need to step away to deal with whatever sorrows that had been amplified by it all.

The pitter patter stopped much too close to her, and dread twisted in her gut as she heard her name. Noise and adrenaline from her previous little outburst still buzzed in her head as she imagined the tea saucer sinking down into the murky lake. Sinclair peered from under her hand towards that familiar voice, and sat up in a forced nonchalant manner once she realised who it was, her fingers loosely laced together. Knowing that she was in good company, her demeanour seemed to ease just a little, though she still seemed distant. A short, polite smile was forced as a greeting. She briefly noted Adeline's sailor dress, her mildly flushed face and breathlessness—the aftermath of a jog. Sinclair turned her head away once more, blankly gazing back towards the lake and the shimmering candle lights of the Lost Pearl.

"Hmm," a small noise of acknowledgement. "My mother put this together for me," Sinclair stated simply.

It was crystal clear to Addie that something was plaguing Sinclair, even under the cloak of half-light. The pair had only crossed each others path twice before this occasion, but still, it felt odd to see the usually stoic Gryffindor in this way. Sinclair seemed softer and less rigid than usual as the moon lit her silhouette, honey-hazel eyes locked absently on the old ship floating in the distance. Even though she rested just across from Adeline, it was as if her mind wandered in another place entirely.

Approaching the little lion further, the young raven cleared her throat. "Well I must admit..." Adeline lingered for a beat before snagging the top-hat from beside Sinclair swiftly. A risky move, but one she prayed would pay off. With little hesitation, she pulled her pearly white sailor's cap from her head and tossed it in Sinclair's lap, before plopping the top hat in it's place. She placed her hands on her hips cheekily in an attempt to earn some semblance of a smile from the girl. "..Your mother has fabulous taste." She offered the gryffindor a warm, heartfelt smile before taking a seat beside her on the cold stone, doe eyes glittering in the darkness.

Adeline's voice softened as she removed Sinclair's hat from atop her mess of curls, tone settling into a more heartfelt place than before. "So.." Adeline gingerly placed the old hat on Sinclair's head, completing her ensemble once more. It quite suited her. The distant sounds of party-goers filled the air between them like a distant symphony as Adeline stumbled over her next sentence. "Is.. there something you want to talk about?" Adeline’s blue eyes rested wide upon Sinclair as she waited for her reply.

Observing Adeline's playful interaction with her hat, Sinclair absentmindedly caught the sailor hat tossed toward her lap. She raised a brow subtly, the corner of her lips lifting in a brief amusement at the Ravenclaw's charming pose. Her thumb brushed against the fabric of the sailor hat, pausing when her top hat was returned to her. Sinclair handed Addie's hat back to her, adjusted her top hat by the brim, and let it sit on her head tilted instead. If she had a cigarette between her fingers, she would've looked like Marlene Dietrich in her androgynous phase.

She watched Addie sit beside her, though gazed back out at the lake towards the ship and the quivering lights reflected on the lake. The Gryffindor, guarded and deflective, gently knitted her brow in denial seemingly confused at the question, "I'm not sure what you're hinting at... I just wanted to step away from... all that," she sighed towards the end and lazily gestured towards the distant ship, "I could ask you the same, since you jogged over to me." She was unaware that anyone had seen her toss the saucer, and assumed it was something between her and herself. She'd rather keep it that way. Her sharp gaze, slightly softened by weariness, warily settled on Addie's friendly face as if analysing her intent.

Adeline didn’t know Sinclair nearly as well as she’d imagined; she should’ve expected to have to work harder than that if she intended to crack her shell. There was something undeniably magnetic about the Gryffindor girl. Those sharp instincts and that cool, collected air drew Adeline into her orbit. Her presence, while understated like Addie's, was punctuated with a silent, sharp confidence that the Raven was lacking, and inevitably drawn to. As it stood, the two lingered in the uncertain valley between not quite friends and not quite strangers. If their paths kept crossing like this, sooner or later, the ice would have to give way. The Ravenclaw endured a quiet moment of unraveling confidence as Sinclair turned Adeline’s question back on her.

Addie took a moment to indulge herself in a deep, steadying breath, collecting her thoughts before meeting the hazel-eyed girl's weary gaze. "I don't know. the party was lovely and all but it grew kind of .. stale?" Adeline puzzled over the most polite way to convey that the night had been rather boring until she had spotted Sinclair, and the glint of her flung saucer over the black lake. "I had been wandering the dock trying to find a reason to stay, and then, there you were. I guess .. it kind of felt like you were waiting for something, too. " Adeline's eyes darted from Sinclair's to the water-glossed lake shore. Why did she even care so much? The longer she pondered the moment, the more flustered she became. "Once I made it here you just seemed off, somehow. Sad. I know we aren't really friends or anything, but.. " Her voice softened as she twiddled anxiously with the tip of her white satin glove, convincing a loose seam to unravel in her fingers. "I just figured.." Adeline dropped her head, unable to piece the proper words together and fearing the cold sting of further embarrassment. "Nevermind."

The Gryffindor wasn't so sure if she had indeed been spotted with her saucer, but it was possible enough that she began to feel a little defensive and ashamed of it. Sinclair nonetheless hid it behind blank, calculative eyes as she considered Addie's words.
We aren't really friends. Addie's words echoed in her head. It was true, and a part of Sinclair told her to keep her distance and not have high expectations, while another part felt just a little hopeful. She was young, and despite preferring solitude most of the time, the kid didn't want total social isolation. At home, she'd spend time with her parents and the farm animals, but at Hogwarts...? Despite being surrounded by people, she did not seem to have much luck finding a place of belonging. She felt as if no one knew her.

Perhaps it was in the way that her tailcoat and white tie hugged her body and the faint rumble of music in the air that made her feel particularly sentimental tonight. Her mind flit off to her mother's old 30s musical films and she could not help but imagine dancing with a friend in her outfit, despite not quite being in the mood to dance at all. It was romanticization, a fantasy of joy and synchronisation that only made reality more obvious. Her fingers pinched the cloth of her trousers, fidgeting with the fabric.
She could tell that Addie was making an effort to check in on her, and while she wasn't sure why the girl would care, she did indeed feel off this night. Another time and she may have clammed up immediately.
"I'm not sure I'm waiting for anything," Sinclair seemed a little lost in thought. Her voice lowered with a hint of desolation, "...She's never going to come." The words left her with a certain firmness, as if hearing them aloud would convince herself to let go.

Sinclair remained oh so pensive. That part felt normal to Adeline. What came as a shock, was the sudden admission of missing something, or rather, someone. A window into the girl's soul opened, just for a moment. Eager to know her deeper, Adeline found herself instantly peering in.

"...She?" Addie's eyebrows furrowed. The question came off more than a little nosy. It would be a lie to say that she wasn't being so, as well intended as she was. Adeline realized just then that she had leaned into the conversation quizzically, no doubt a touch uncomfortable for Sinclair. She pulled back from the little lion quickly and cleared her throat, messily walking the line of too much, and not enough.

Looking at the Gryffindor girl felt like staring into a funhouse mirror. Her gaze held a near-recognizable echo of Addie herself: loneliness, wit, independence, stretched thin like a reflection through rippling water. Close enough to recognize, different enough to captivate. It was this feeling of sameness that drew Adeline to Sinclair. In a world where she felt as if no one could see her, The Gryffindor's eyes seemed to already understand.

She paused for a moment, allowing herself a moment to contemplate her next move. Delicately, Adeline placed a gloved hand on Sinclair's shoulder, forming a bridge between the two. "If you want to talk about .. her .. I would love to listen." Adeline removed her hand from Sinclair's shoulder with a little squeeze and placed it back in her lap, before continuing. "I won't be leaving though. And I am guessing you aren't in the mood to duel it out for the spot. So.. your choice, Top Hat." Adeline referenced their last meeting with a tiny smile. As much as she hoped Sinclair chose to let her in, Adeline had meant it when she said that she would stay regardless.

She. The Gryffindor's gut twisted at the question. Hearing someone else mention the topic that had been gnawing at her for months solidified it and grounded it in reality—no longer a mere obsession in her own mind. There was then a warm pressure on her shoulder and Sinclair subtly tensed up, hairs standing on the back of her neck. She grew awfully still, like a cat thinking it would not be seen if it just stopped moving. Sinclair couldn't remember the last time she were touched with care. Perhaps at home, during early summer? Either way, it caught her completely off guard. Despite preferring solitude, the absence of that hand left her body feeling too cold. She did not understand it.

Sinclair exhaled silently, caught between answering or not, trying to form words. She definitely was not in the mood for a duel, and she did not want to yet again give up her spot—a spot that she came to first. For a few moments, silence fell between them.

"I'm...not sure it is worth mentioning," she muttered dismissively. It was silly. Juvenile. They were feelings that did not matter, not compared to the two open caskets and the suffocating heat that summer. "...Just...a childish one-sided friendship," a short pause, "It'd be easier to feel nothing at all." Guarded, the kid leaned her elbows against her knees.

I'm probably half way there anyways. She thought bitterly, eyes blankly staring out into the rippling lake. Speaking about herself, about her own mind and troubles did not seem like something she was used to, nor anything she was comfortable with. Behind the blank, unfeeling stare, the girl mentally prepared herself to be abandoned again once her schoolmate had lost interest in her.

The young Ravenclaw’s ever-expressive eyebrows scrunched and shifted as Sinclair spoke, her tone low and drenched in doubt. “I'm...not sure it is worth mentioning,” To Addie’s admitted frustration, the girl was still holding back. As casual as she tried to keep the conversation, Adeline could clearly feel the pain behind Sinclair’s words. It felt as if she was right on the edge of honesty. "...Just...a childish one-sided friendship," the gryffindor girl continued, "It'd be easier to feel nothing at all."

Adeline paused for a long moment, her eyes never leaving the slumped lion. Her previously playful tone quickly shifted into stoic seriousness. “You can’t mean that..” the whispered words escaped her lips without permission. Adeline fumbled to soften her comment, “I understand how hard it can be to lose someone..” Her blue eyes peeled from the girl and focused once more over the rippling lake, the two of them quietly sharing the same sparkling view. Adeline let the silence linger before continuing.

“You have to feel, Sinclair,” Addie began hesitantly. “And you have to feel all of it. The good, the bad..” Her passionate tone softened just a touch as she continued, “..the love, and the loss that comes with it.” Adeline continued fiddling with her unraveling glove, stifling the nerves accompanying this sudden burst of vulnerability.

The blue-eyed girl shifted her weight on the log to face Sinclair full-on. “It is a lot easier to make it through when you have someone to share the load with.” Adeline refused to let her voice falter despite her fear. No holding back now. “Let me. Talk to me, even if it’s just for tonight… You can trust me, Sinclair.” As foolish as she felt, she spoke once more, clearly, firmly, and with sincerity.

“I promise.”
