Jada left the cabin. She hurried down the wide corridor in search, finally stopping when she found a window she could open. She shifted onto her toes and reached for the handle to open it.
Then, she took a deep breath and tried to clear her head.
Go away, go away, go away! she repeated to herself, envisioning a calm ocean, it’s waves rolling onto the white shore of a tropical beach. Coupled with a few deep breaths, she successfully drove out the thoughts. Finally
After a moment longer, she went off in search of the trolley.
Three chocolate frogs and a pumpkin juice please she said to the trolley lady as she handed her a fistful of galleons, socks and knuts. This should be sufficient.
Having acquired what she came for she slowly headed back in the direction of their cabin. Her thoughts unwilling returned to the boy. She couldn’t help but wonder what gave him such a strange appearance and demeanor. She had seen plenty of odd things in her life, but she couldn’t quite place it with this boy. And, Meave had seemed lost when they had discussed chocolate frogs. Everyone knew what chocolate frogs were! Everyone except… oh. She must be muggle-born, not that it makes a difference. That would explain her nervousness.
She returned to the cabin and placed the goods onto the table. I know you didn’t want anything but I got you chocolate frogs in case you change your mind. she said before sitting down and peeling open her own chocolate frog.

Azrael titled his head slightly As he turned to look at Jada and the chocolate frogs...one wouldn't hurt, after all- it's a long ride and he should probably eat something.
"...thank you, Jada."
He suddenly said, voice monotone like always...it's honestly strange how he always manages to keep a neutral tone of voice regardless of what he's saying-
As he took the frog, he quietly opened the pentagonal shaped box- pulling out the chocolate frog inside and giving it a bite... immediately after, both of his once small pupils slowly turned bigger and his eyes wider- he seems to enjoy sweets by the looks of it, especially now since his eyes are practically two moons and you can barely see his eye color from the amount of size his pupils suddenly took on-
He looked down, pulling out the collectible card and looking down at it with unblinking eyes as he slowly chewed on the chocolate frog..
"...I got Salazar Slytherin."
Azrael said with a blink, turning the card around for the two girls to see- he didn't seem surprised or excited..or.. anything at all really- but still, he doesn't seem to hate it.
"...what did you guys get if you don't mind me asking?"

New beginnings
Meave had been quietly fiddling with the small guitar pick she carried everywhere — running her thumb over its smooth edges, tracing tiny invisible patterns across her arm — when the door slid open again. Startled, she looked up to see the girl enter, carrying a small box of sweets. The girl set them down on the table with a cheerful grin, and Meave tilted her head slightly, curiosity sparking through her shyness.
When the others didn’t immediately reach for the treats, she hesitated before picking up the box herself. Oh… thank you, she murmured, her voice soft. She carefully unwrapped one of the chocolates, the scent of sugar and caramel filling the small cabin. Taking a small bite, she felt warmth spread through her chest — it was rich, smooth, and comforting in a way that reminded her of home.
A small card slipped out from the wrapper, and she blinked, picking it up. I got Helga Hufflepuff, she read aloud, her tone a mix of surprise and thoughtfulness. She smiled faintly, glancing between the boy and girl. Hufflepuff… maybe that fits.

I got the old Headmaster, Dumbledore. Didn’t one of the students kill him? she said. Not a bad card to start her new collection. She pocketed it, opening her bright orange bottle pumpkin juice. She’s never tried it before but it had looked good on the trolley, so she’d bought it.
She took a long gulp of it and cringed. She wasn’t sure whether she liked it or not. It was awfully sweet and a little too spiced for her liking but the flavours of apple, pumpkin and cinnamon were well matched. Oh well, she try it again later, maybe it got better with time.
She closed the bottle and set it aside.
You play guitar, I assume. She asked Meave, gesturing with her head towards the pick in her hand, Have your brought it with you to Hogwarts?
She herself played the flute but had left it at home. Sending her parents an owl about that would be one of the first things she would do. Music was something that had never failed to soothe her. She could also play piano but doubted there would be opportunity to play or practice at school. Oh well, some sacrifices have to be made. C’est la vie.

I looked up to acknowledge the girl, yeah, I dabble, um, I'm just learning how to play. I did bring it as I thought this would just be a normal boarding school. I'm hoping I can get to play sometime. I was told to leave it at home by my parents, but I snuck it on here. I um... I don't know if that is allowed though. Meave quieted down, thinking she was rambling. She grew quiet as she always did, twirling the pick around her fingers It helps with anxiety, the guitar playing.
Do you guys play any instruments? Meave asked, wondering what they played, if any at all. Meave thought about her parents back home, how were they? and how Baxter, her kitten, was. She wondered if he would feel lonely, being away from her this long.

New beginnings
Azrael's eyes narrowed as he looked out the window, the sky was starting to get darker- as if a huge storm was coming, the clouds were slowly covering up the sun, and the cabin was starting to get darker- and colder.
"...I don't play any instruments..I have a music box though, my father made it for me."
He mumbled, blinking back up at the window as thunder struck not too far from the train- making the whole thing rumble for a second, you could hear the squeaks and jumpiness from the other kids in the cabins next to theirs, some were scared, others were giggling at their friends being so jumpy...still, it was clear that the storm was gonna be a long and harsh one.
"...I assume neither of you have anything to cover yourselves with, if we get there and it's still raining- you could duck under mine."
he quietly gestured to the gothic styled umbrella right next to him, leaning against the side of the seats...it has a wine red underside and the rest is all fancy patterns and black undertones- it's big and clearly made to shelter you from the sun as well as the rain- if you look closely enough, you can see the engraved pattern that reads: "The Sun's shadow knows no fear, no dawn. Is the watcher always watched, or simply drawn?" It's faint, but it glistens every time it gets even a little bit dark inside the cabin- the engraving seemingly only visible in the dark.

Jada cast her gaze onto the scenery beyond the window. He was right. Angry clouds of dark grey, almost black, we’re rolling in and the air was thick with tension for the impending storm. There were no animals to be seen other than the occasional bird, flying in the opposite direction. Her parents had told here they were brought to the school in a special way during their first year, hopefully the weather wouldn’t impact that too much.
Thanks, but I’ve got my own. she said, answering Azrael’s question. Yours is quite nice though, where did you get it from?
His umbrella was rich shade of burgundy with what seemed like an ebony handle and, What was that? a glint of silver on the handle. But it hadn’t been visible earlier, when the sun had somewhat shone into the cabin. In fact it did quite the opposite. It seemed to glow faintly in the dark. How strange…
He seemed to favour the dark she thought. He seemed to flinch a little every time a ray of sunlight penetrated into the cabin, but it was hard to tell for he hardly moved at all. Besides there was something unnatural about his presence.she thought, squinting her eyes slightly in an attempt to read the words on the handle. She couldn’t quite place it but he wasn’t like everyone else.

"...It was a gift from my parents, they have one of their own to match."
He responded, shifting the umbrella so the message was clear: "The Sun's shadow knows no fear, no dawn. Is the watcher always watched, or simply drawn?"
"...Each one has a riddle that defines us."
Azrael's family seemed to be very close knit- especially with the way he talked about them, as if they'd give anything for him- the matching umbrellas? Surely just a cute family gift- or a weird ritual of sorts, either way they included him.
"...it's enchanted to keep the holder cold."
He suddenly said, slowly pulling on one of the sides gently, when he did, the thing quite literally started expelling cold air, not any cold air either - one you'd feel during snow storms- but the second he closed it the air dissipated.
"...where you'd get yours?"
He asked with his usual blank expression, as if he didn't seem bothered by his umbrella or what it meant having something so personally tailored to one's self- that, and how expensive it must have been ...to him, that's simply his umbrella and nothing else- and he's internally curious to learn more about Jada and Meave.
The weather outside started getting worse as the train continued to move and it started raining soon enough, darkness engulfing the cabin- now, usually, people's eyes are not that visible when it's dark because human eyes aren't that small...but Azrael's eyes are rounder and bigger than normal- which means he has to make them bigger in order to see better in the dark.

New beginnings
Azrael shifted, making the message inscribed on the handle of him umbrella clearly visible.
The Sun’s shadow know no fear, no dawn. Is the watcher always watched or simply drawn?
What on earth? She thought. What did that mean? He’d said that the riddle defined its owner, was he a watcher? What did that ever mean? Wasn’t everyone a watcher in their own way? Maybe his big eyes had something to do with it. And, what was he drawn to? Was it a literal attraction or a mental pull?
“The sun’s shadow knows no fear, no dawn”? Did it mean that one was safe in the dark? No dawn, that had a very ominous note to it. The phrase also personifies the shadow of the sun. Was it meant to represent Azrael?
Not just that, it blew cold wind. Why would anyone want to be cold? His family must be quite well off, those umbrellas can’t have been cheap. For each member of his family to have one of their own, customized specific for them…
She felt a tug of jealousy. What she wouldn’t give for something as beautiful as that. She slid her gaze over the smooth handle, pausing at the inscription. She wondered what hers would say if she had one.
Mine isn’t anything special. I found it lying around at home. she said casually, You mentioned yours was a gift. If you don’t mind me asking, what was the occasion?

"...my birth, each family member gets one on the day of their births- and anyone who marries into the family gets one as a wedding gift."
He started, talking calmly like it was something that everyone did- as if he doesn't realize that no, people don't randomly give their newborn children umbrellas with creepy riddles on the handle, and no- it's not something people are gonna think normally of.
But like always, he doesn't get that- or maybe is just choosing to play dumb? You can't exactly tell all that well.
"...In my family, parents isolate themselves once their children are born- and they don't see each other again...my mother and father haven't talked to their parents or siblings in years, and when I'm an adult and have kids of my own- I probably won't see them again either... we prefer solitude..it's nothing special, just a tradition."
He spoke with a quiet shrug, big eyes narrowing as the cabin started getting darker- he seemed calmer now, as if he enjoyed the coldness of the cabin that was slowly starting to begin because of the heavy rain...which had started not too long ago.
"Is it unusual to have such traditions?"
Azrael suddenly asked with a blink, as if just now realizing that Jada was surprised about it- did he really think that every family had a tradition like his? Sure, there's cute, family traditions that a lot of people have...but giving umbrellas at birth is probably not one of them- at least that people know of, of course.
for him, that's just his life- especially the part about living without grandparents, uncles, aunts or cousins- he'd probably have a heart attack on a normal house with a normal family, after all- he doesn't seem like the type to be used to constant noise and warmth.
