The Drowned Palace

Silence was a beautiful thing.
In truth, Maisie didn't often appreciate it because it seemed the antithesis of fun. Yet here, in this moment, deep in this puzzle, with steam raging at either side of her ears, the only thing that helped her maintain some sanity was silence. That was true even if she'd had to yell to get it. Apparently, one of the other girls even appreciated it.
And the silence helped to draw out what seemed like the next piece of getting the hell out of here and hopefully reuniting with Mylo and Avis. Cecilia's song was met with a bell, a splash, and some light. It seemed like quite a posh place, appropriate from some of these irritating folks around her.
It took a few minutes to figure out exactly where she should look; there was so much in this room and it seemed unclear exactly what might lead her out of here. The animals seemed to be behaving not like animals, seemingly forming an infinity symbol. Was this a place of endless torture? Not if there was a door. There had to be a door...
And then, just then, with furrowed brows it struck her that one of the paintings might be concealing a door. They looked big enough. And if they were it was probably magic beyond a simple Alohomora. That would be too easy. Her eyes drifted up towards the clock and it's hands. "What if it's a key?" she said softly into the room. Looking around, she locked eyes with the ginger girl who'd complimented her and had been clever enough to sing the riddle—she would have looked for Percy, but his inertia was painstaking even if he seemed like he was beginning to come out of it—and suggested, "The second and the fourth book...what if that's a key from the clock? Maybe it'll open a door. I'll take one if you take the other?"
And after a beat, she raised her wand again and attempted, "Accio," on the second book on the shelf, Watching the Waves. Simply picking it up would probably have been enough, but in a place like this she'd rather not touch anything in case it all went wrong. As she waited for the book to fly into her hands and for the redhead to do the same, she answered her, "Honestly, I'm just trying to get back to my friends. Might not be a bad idea for you too considering some of the things that have been said."
Maybe she should have stopped before that last sentence, but the steam clouded her judgement. Maybe she should have stopped before insisting, "And I'm not brilliant." All anyone had to do was look at her horrific duelling record to confirm that.
But she was going to get out of here somehow.

── Cecilia fell silent as laughter rang out in unison with a splash of water. Immediately, she raised her hand to shield her eyes, narrowing them as light filled the room. Her gaze swept across the room, noting the intricate decals and high columns. A small smile tugged at her lips as she marvelled at the deep blue. The efforts that had gone into organising this were nothing short of impressive.
“Oh, it’s a shame that you were separated from them,” she remarked, trying to hide her surprise before glancing at Percival. Their earlier exchange left Cecilia assuming that the pair were friends. Perhaps that was an overestimation on her part. Somehow, the brunette’s tone did not afflict the red-haired witch. Her first month in the castle taught her to expect blunt words and frostiness. She was beginning to think this was characteristic of many students here. The last sentence, however, made her raise her eyebrows.
“Don’t worry about me, I have some friends here,” she said, emphasising the obvious fact that she was not on good terms with a certain witch. “Though some seem to be more present than others,” she added quietly before gazing at Milica. Cecilia never thought there would be a day when her roommate would be the most agreeable. Yet there they were. However, it was not surprising that she still had her wits about her. Cecilia always knew she would be competent.
Only Merlin knew what was going on with half of the lot – it was odd how a foul mood had begun to afflict them. Most would simply chalk it up to bad luck, but she secretly faulted Esme Hestridge. It felt like a terrible omen for the two to occupy the same space – almost as though the air was predestined to sour. Perhaps Maisie was onto something.
“Let’s just focus on getting you out of here. What are these friends of yours like?” she suggested and tried to shift the topic. She then nodded in agreement when Maisie suggested taking the book. Her fingertips brushed up the spine of the fourth book before she tried to pull it off the shelf. “Whispers of the Shells… Maybe shells will reveal something,” she murmured to herself before whirring towards the group. “Could someone examine the shells?” she instructed them before turning back to Maisie.
“You’re brilliant to me,” she clarified sternly. It was her opinion, and no one – not even Maisie herself – would be changing that. “Who knows how much time we would have wasted if you had not cast that spell. You clearly have some notable strengths.”
Speaking of strengths – or lack thereof – she was fairly certain that Percival would soon turn into stone if this went on for any longer. What was an initially amusing sight was now turning into a mere hindrance. If they were to solve this, they would need all hands on deck. After heaving a deep sigh, she glared at the boy before scolding him.
“For Merlin’s sake, Percival, she is part-veela, not a bloody basilisk – Snap out of it!” She then sharply turned to the rest. “Throw a cloth over his eyes, or maybe give him a gentle shake. And try casting reparo on the clock when you get a moment.”
Instinct told Cecilia that her requests fell on deaf ears, but only time would tell. Should anyone fail to follow through, she would take matters into her own hands.

| E | ✧ mentions. @Maisie Gemmell, @Violence Bloodthorn, @Milica Vranekova, @Percival Rocier, @Violence Bloodthorn; ![]() ![]() "Would you all please just shut up!?” Esme blinked, admittedly startled by the sudden change to Maisie’s demeanour. Though she didn’t know Maisie particularly well, this did seem like the kind of thing she would do — red city upbringing and all. Coming from her, Esme found it mildly humorous. She couldn’t help sputter out a quiet laugh, suppressing a further comment and otherwise deciding to nod along. She gave Cecilia a snide glance, and gave an equally brief one to the boy, Percival. The shouting might have been startling, but clearly, his intelligence remained at a steady plateau; though he was no longer staring intently, he was tripping over himself to look at something else. Esme rolled her eyes, deciding no further intervention was needed (or frankly, earned) on her part. Esme instead turned to look at the newly revealed lines. Her group was seemingly competent — with Cecilia’s presence, it was truly an achievement for the ages. Esme noted the wondrous occurrence with a mildly surprised raise of her eyebrows, then figured she should contribute herself, lest the miracle of everyone here having two functioning brain cells decided to wear off. Fail the search, your time is through… the treasure stays… “And so do you!” Esme spoke the last line out loud, though her enthusiasm dimmed when she realised Cecilia, on the other side of the room, had just exclaimed the same thing. For Merlin’s sake, could this unfortunate red-head do nothing on her own? Pretending to clear her throat, Esme muttered, “Twphocaul1” — and following Cecilia’s mediocre job singing out the full couplet, she added, under her breath, “hiw caun wie lu flaus aunk shaurph aus shu saumu somu?2” The voice that had been singing to them before clearly did not share (or at least did not care about) Esme’s opinion on Cecilia’s vocals. A loud belly laugh was heard, and with a soft sound of water splashing, they were transformed. No longer was the only light the dim algae — they now stood in a room with more than enough glowing lights that cast watery reflections on the walls. Each light danced along the walls surrounding them, making Esme slowly turn in space, enamoured by the view. It reminded her of the view from the Slytherin common room, the gentle green tint the Great Lake cast over the furniture; only here, it was as if they stood inside of an Atlantean palace, surrounded by literature, art, and sea creatures alike. A gorgeous grandfather clock remained frozen in time, its hands stuck on “II” and “IV” respectively. Esme watched as Maisie and Cecilia each picked a book of the sea-shell bookshelf, deciding on what to do next without any particular hurry. “Could someone examine the shells?” Cecilia said with a grating tone. Not that that was unusual, but the instruction in it got on Esme’s nerves; and though Esme had considered examining the collection and the wicker basket standing next to it, she was definitely not going to now. Leave the googly eyed boy to do it; not like he was contributing much otherwise. Speaking of… “For Merlin’s sake, Percival, she is part-veela, not a bloody basilisk – snap out of it!” Perhaps the only thing Esme heard Cecilia say that could be classified as genuinely amusing just left her mouth, and Esme felt her lips spread into a smile that, if perhaps worn by someone with less polite restrain would look downright mean. “Please, miss Merrick, no need to be so crass. I appreciate your concern; I suppose to someone of your rather particular presentation it might be surprising, but I’m unfortunately used to being stared at.” Esme reached out to pat Cecilia’s shoulder in faux-comfort, purposefully digging a hand of perfectly manicured nails into it. She removed it as quickly as she could so as not to be accused of anything but perfect manners, of course. Esme gracefully moved herself to the other side of the room, and though it was mostly just a way to not have to talk to Cecilia for any longer than the quick jab demanded, it put her in front of the wall with the moving paintings. Figuring there would be nothing better to do, Esme straightened her back and leaned in. The whale, the jellyfish, orca, shark… and of course, the mermaid. Her eyes seemed so alive. Human. Like Esme could just reach out and feel the siren’s skin under Esme’s very own fingertips… The art was nothing short of gorgeous. Esme felt convinced there had to be something more to it. ![]() action. inspect the paintings. stamina. 5 evasion. 4 strength. 2 wisdom. 7 arcane power. 5 accuracy. 7 wc. 763 notes. banner made by violence. catching up on the round I missed — sorry! 1 — meaning "typical" in the veela language. 2 — meaning "how can you be flat and sharp at the same time?" in the veela language. ✧✦✧ |

They seemed to be overwhelmed a bit by the looks of it, and it was quite a given too, but the most important part starting now was to explore whatever "caught their eye" as "bravely" as possible. What could really...go..wrong? The strategy they were coming up with though was quite a solid enough one, now the question was whether they could carry on through with it.MOD POST - GROUP 4
Regardless...@Maisie Gemmell would make the start to that by performing a well cast Accio on the second book. The book seemed old, and fragile for the lack of a better word, but even as she would likely try to look through it, there was nothing of "great importance" other than...well the study of watching the waves. Maybe it was not such an interesting book after all, but to each their own. So this was not the right book. Here was to hoping the other one was the correct one.
Upon taking the fourth book, "Whispers of the Shells" @Cecilia Merrick would be met with a slightly different "formatting" than what Maisie found.
A date is written on the right corner, the first number glowing strangely. 1934. Scribbles had covered the pages, circling various words as well as a "6". It depicted a ranking of the rarity of various shells, going from one drop of water to five, with five being the rarest. The name written under the rarest shell was Corpus Cushellum, which seemed, according to the book, to be a dark purple shell with an almost ripply texture. It was underlined multiple times, and a scribbled margine marked it as "FOUND". And sure enough, looking around the room they would notice that same rare shell, though away from the basket.
Last but not least, @Esme Hestridge found the paintings interesting enough to give them a closer glance. In particular, the siren painting was quite intriguing, though it seemed to await something, or maybe it was just how the pieces of art were arranged. Then again, maybe it was one of those paintings that could be interacted with in some way.

It was a shame indeed not to have Avis and Mylo here. Maisie sighed at the thought. But there was only one way back to them, and she'd have to work with these nuts to do it. But she was determined, wand steady in hand, however unreliable.
“Don’t worry about me, I have some friends here,” Cecilia said.
Maisie looked around at the group again briefly: Percy being useless, and the others who had been fighting, including Esme who seemed to speak a different language. With raised brows, Maisie replied, "You sure about that?" Not that it was any of her mind.
What she should have been focusing on was casting—her arch nemesis. Thankfully, the Accio came off without a hitch. Pulling the book into her grasp, she flipped the pages looking for clues.
But there were none.
Her lips soured. "See, not brilliant," she said to Cecilia as she put the book aside so as not to get mixed up with those they had yet to look at. And she was about to move away, she noticed Cecilia's book seemed to be scrawling with information. "What did you find?" she asked, curious now. At least there was some hope, even if it didn't come from her efforts.
Meanwhile, Esme moved to check out the paintings. Maisie decided to follow since the book for her had not been particularly fruitful. "You think there's something here?" she asked her as she looked over the paintings and wondered if like the books, they just needed to find the right one.
"I'm sorry about him, by the way," she said as the steam puffed out of her ears, "I don't know what's wrong with him." Because Percy was usually helpful and frankly rude, even if the Slytherin was accustomed to it. And sure, Esme was a veela or almost as a veela as Cecilia had declared and she was beautiful there was no denying, but aesthetics weren't going to let Maisie get off task.
"Revelio," she would attempt at the paintings this time.

| 𝖂hen Violence had woken up that day, this was the last thing she had envisioned would happen. She'd gotten up with a sour mood, but had been welcome to the Fall Ball. Throughout the day, she kept telling herself it would be alright. She could go through this day without breaking down, or without losing her mind. Now? She felt nauseous. That could have been because she skipped food but she didn't mind blaming the people here. Maisie snapped at everybody and Violence barely supressed a laugh, "Sébastien l'aurait adoré s'il était là!" 1 She muttered under her breath. Maisie continued with the lyrics after her, followed by the girl with the black hair. She jogged her memory trying to see if she even briefly picked up on her name when she was introducing herself. Millie? That had to be it, so she called out, "Good one, Millie!" Atleast she would be on talking terms with people. If Violence had it her way, she would be alone here, not with a team, and would have gotten out of this in half the time. But of course, every person with a superiority complex had to be stuck with her. Cecilia and Esme shouted the last line at the exact same time and instantly huffing. Violence rolled her eyes as Cecilia sang the entire tune, before a laugh was heard followed by a splash. It was as if a mermaid laughed and then dived inside the water. But that had to be creative thinking, since they were standing in a room with stone walls. The room suddenly enlightened and Violence was, once again, blinded by the sudden light. She blinked a few times before noticing the designs. Luminiscent jellyfish hung near the ceiling, providing a bluish-green glow to the entire room. Things were finally visible to her and her eyes darted around the room, trying to take everything in. The motifs interested her but the thing that captured her attention was window that opened up. Curtains hung loosely around its frame, making way for the perfect view of the water. Violence could make out a few fish and mermaid. 'I knew it! That was the laugh of a mermaid, and lo! A mermaid. I wonder how they got us underwater, though. I'm pretty sure I entered the room from the small hall, and we haven't really crossed anything, or even walked. Curious!' Before Violence could notice much about the aquatic life, her neck tilted and she noticed the clock next to the door. The time showed 4:10. She moved closer to the clock, there seemed to be something amiss there. But to figure out what she'd have to look through everything else. She watched Maisie take the lead again, casting an Accio on the bookshelf. Violence scoffed as Maisie emphasized on not being brilliant, "Oh please, you're the only one who has actually been interested in getting out of here. Don't be modest!" She didn't like the type of people who were smart but always insisted on not being so, it seemed fake. But in all honesty, she could understand where Maisie was coming from, the chaos in the room could have been upsetting to most, if they weren't used to much fun company. She watched as Cecilia grew frustrated with Percival, followed by Esme's reply. Violence rolled her eyes, "Seriously, you guys need to stop. Everybody here is trapped, and nobody cares if you're better than the other. And, I doubt Percival is in his senses enough to be doing any casting at all. Let me try to get that." Heaving, she stepped forward and pointed her wand at the clock, and muttered a sharp, "Reparo!" She walked over to Cecilia and looked over her shoulder, muttering a quick, "I hope you don't mind," trying to see what she found. Violence would have gone to Maisie but she seemed to be slightly shaken up, still. "I wasn't trying to be rude to you, earlier. But maybe try to ignore Esme for a while? We all could do well with a little quiet. Things are already quite tense. I hope you understand." She gave a small smile to Cecilia, not wanting to ruin her well-established friendship with the red-head. "Do you see anything useful in the book?" Violence decided it would be good to know what Esme found too, since she doubted Cecilia would go to her or vice versa. She walked over to the blonde girl, hoping to get some answers. "Hey, is there some sort of clue in the painting?" She hoped her expression was formal enough for the girl to not mention anything about her comment earlier. After all, Violence didn't owe Esme any sort of explanation. Cecilia and Violence were atleast, friends. Violence watched as Maisie cast a Revelio on the painting. She hoped something here would help them. She couldn't wait to call it a night and fall onto her bed. It was better than playing audience to what looked like a scene out of a daily soap. | ||

── Cecilia let out a deep sigh as irritation crept up on her. One did not require a translation to know that what Esme Hestridge muttered under her breath was far from pleasant. Her eye twitched involuntarily every time she spoke.
“Say, I’m hearing plenty from you, yet none of your incoherent mumbling has proved useful so far,” Cecilia remarked, her smile strained as she looked at Esme.
Fortunately, her smile quickly relaxed into a more genuine one upon hearing Maisie speak. Her words elicited a laugh from Cecilia before she nodded happily in response. “Quite sure! I would not stop being friends with someone because of a bad day.”
The red-haired witch tried to remain somewhat civil for Maisie’s sake but the final straw when Esme sunk her nails into her shoulders.
“I see why my grandmother is so fond of you, Miss Hestridge,” she remarked. “However, I implore you to not be blinded by vanity. Though you are well-suited to the spotlight, even someone of your caliber can understand that we need everyone to be alert,” a faint smile tugged at her lips as the last word rolled off her tongue. Her voice, now hushed, offered a final piece of advice with faux-concern. “Also, do yourself a favour and clip those claws. I would hate to see you hurt yourself.”
Despite poor Maisie’s request, the flame-haired witch struggled to remain silent. Merlin knows she tried but Esme Hestridge always seemed to get on her nerves.
Cecilia then tilted her head confusedly in response to Violence’s outburst before shrugging and brushing it off as dramatics. However, she raised her eyebrow upon hearing her comment to Maisie. The older girl casually glossed over her efforts, leading her to suspect that perhaps Percival was not the only one whose mind had wandered. Her gaze immediately shifted to Maisie, hoping that she would appreciate them.
“I don’t care about rude remarks,” she clarified, furrowing her brows as she turned away from Violence. If that were the case, she would not spend so much time with her dearest roommate. Cecilia had thought of Violence as a friend, which is why she was taken aback by how she failed to consider her side. Had she not seen what Esme did — unprovoked mind you — or did she simply not care? Either way, it felt unfair that she had to be the bigger person — again. Her eyes darkened as a sickening sense of deja vu washed over. She would not put up with it, not this time.
“I can’t do that. I hope you understand,” she replied curtly and shook her head, feeling disappointed. Quite frankly she was fed up with receiving unsolicited advice that had little to do with the task at hand. Perhaps it may have been out of concern, but some bitterness began to brew within her. If anyone truly cared about stopping the bickering then they would also have to take it up with Esme Hestridge, who was every bit as guilty as Cecilia was. Until then, the young witch was going to bite back, each time she was provoked.
“We get on far too well for that,” she added before veering toward the pearl-blonde witch. “Don’t we, my darling Miss Hestridge?” She asked, trying not to choke on her own saccharine while glancing over her shoulder and flashing the girl a grin.
Come on, Esme. I thought you loved a good performance,? Her eyes gleamed as she met the girl’s gaze. It was almost as though she challenged her.
“Now back to important matters–” she spun around to face Maisie and flipped the book around. "See. Brilliant!” she exclaimed. “I think once we get out of here, you are owed a big thank you.”
She then showed the rest a glimpse of the pages before relaying her findings.
“Listen closely, I believe we should look for a dark purple shell named Corpus Cushellum. Its texture is rather until but I believe if we put our heads together, we can find it,” she explained slowly, her eyes searching everyone else’s for a sign of mutual understanding. “However, I’m unsure what the glowing number 1934, and the circled six is referring to.”
She then turned to Maisie with a reassuring smile. “There’s no need to apologise. I simply thought that a good fright would bring him back to his senses,” she explained as her gaze drifted to the boy, waiting to see if he would recover.
In the meantime, she moved towards the paintings and awaited the results of Maisie’s spell. Perhaps they would find what they were looking for here.

Unfortunately for @Maisie Gemmell, her wand seemed to have decided not to work with her too well, as the revelio failed. That being said, a closer look at the paintings would show that the painting with the woman, or rather, much siren, was quite loose, as if only held by a nail at best. Maybe it could be taken down? Then again, who would approach the one painting that keeps following them around with her gaze. It was understandable to be cautious.MOD POST - GROUP 4
Meanwhile @Violence Bloodthorn took the initiative to cast reparo on the broken clock, and it worked wonders. As the hand clicked into place, the numeral four began to glow and the clock chimed. Loudly. Time is soon to be up. A panel in the wall slid away, revealing an old-fashioned safe. As you try to unlock it, you suddenly notice it is locked by a code. Six numbers. Have you been paying attention?
Last but not least, @Cecilia Merrick started her search for the missing shell, which she would find coincidentally behind the basket. Maybe putting it back where it belongs would help? After all it looked that it fell off at some point in time, or maybe it was intentionally taken out of there.
Note: Apologies for the late mod post, weekend was busy I only got online on late Sunday and had no neuron power left. To reflect the delay in my mod post, the next ones for this group will be every week from the last mod post from now on.
