A Walk to Remember Nova

Fall had set in around the castle. The forbidden forest was alight as if it were on fire, full of oranges, reds, and yellows. There was nothing more picturesque or peaceful than Hogwarts in the fall. This was Dennis’ third fall at the castle and he’d never ever get tired of such a view!

On this crisp autumn afternoon, the Ravenclaw was taking a break from his usual study routine and, as was often the case, found himself walking along the shore of the great lake. He was dressed in a long sleeve Ravenclaw themed shirt, and his trusty gray pants. Dennis loved the great lake and it was full of both amazing memories of creature spotting and bittersweet memories of first love. Never one to hide from his emotions, he wouldn’t let such moments change how he felt about this place. With a new year though, came the opportunity to meet new people!

Taking a seat on a familiar boulder jutting out against the shore, with the lake lapping one side, Dennis sat and watched some of the other students walking around the water or heading back to the lake. It was nearly perfect! If only he had some company to share the afternoon with!

Bit late, sorry!
Nova was taking a long stroll around the lake, admiring the beauty of the beginning of fall. Shades of red, orange, and gold surrounded her, leaves falling delicately onto the damp grounds around Hogwarts. Every so often, she'd jump onto a leaf, just to hear its crunch. In her coat's pocket was her Pygmy Puff, Trixie, who was squeaking happily.

Granted, she had thick, lavender fur but that didn't stop Nova from feeling a bit of jealousy at how easy it was for her to keep warm. "Why do you get to be all warm and cozy so easily?" She murmured to her, stroking the top of her head as she did so. Trixie gave her a little squeak, one of smug satisfaction. Nova just rolled her eyes, snorting amusedly.

Her eyes narrowed on yet another leaf, a short distance away. It was bright orange, and a bit closer to the shoreline. Grinning widely, her steps quickened as she walked towards the leaf. Standing above it, she raised her foot and crushed it under the sole of her boot. The sound was loud, and she laughed slightly.

Apparently, karma had caught up to her and she suddenly slipped on a slippery rock nearby. She stumbled back before landing on her knees. A small splash of water sprayed on her, and she let out a small gasp as the water seeped into her boots and socks as well as her pants. Trixie, ever the one with good timing, squeaked in amusement. Nova scoffed exasperatedly and stood up, trying to move away from the lake as the cold spread across her legs.

The Ravenclaw watched as a peculiar girl walked down to the lake talking to herself. This struck him as odd so he watched her journey toward him. She seemed to be taking pleasure in…crushing leaves? He tried not to make any kind of judgements on someone who would take pleasure destroying nature, but in the end he found it amusing. She repeated the ritual as she got closer and just when Dennis was about to greet her she slipped on a rock and got wet! Poor thing looked like a wet dog just standing there, legs spread and dripping wet.

Hopping off his rock, Dennis strolled over to where she was standing. “I can help you with that,” he said, pointing at her bottom. “Aer calidus!” Dennis said pulling out his wand and flicking it with the smooth motion of a former duelist. Warm air flowed through the wand and around her pants, socks and shoes, drying them instantly. Putting his wand a way, the red head smiled and introduced himself. “I’m Dennis Tumberton. And don’t worry, you spend enough time down here at the lake and you end up getting wet quite a bit. Enjoying the day?” It was at this point, Dennis spied a tuft of hair from her pocket. So she wasn’t just talking to herself.

Bit late, sorry!
Nova carefully trudged out of the lake, expression one of irritation. Thankfully, her jacket and shirt hadn't gotten wet, but it still felt awful with every breeze making her shiver. Her shoes and pants dripped water onto the grass as she shuffled a short distance away from the lake. Letting out a loud sigh, she suddenly felt yet another gust of wind blow towards her.

Her pants and shoes suddenly dried up, leaving a slightly warm feeling to them as if the sun had come out of the clouds. Glancing around for who or what had made this happen, she saw a red headed boy walking towards her, wand out. Nova blinked in surprise as the boy approached, his wand still faintly glowing from the charm he’d just cast. The warmth spreading through her boots and up her legs was oddly comforting, even if the suddenness of it made her jump a little.

“Er, thanks?” she said, glancing down at her clothes as if to make sure they were really dry. “That’s really useful. I should probably learn that spell before winter properly sets in.” She gave a small laugh, brushing a stray strand of hair out of her face. "Yeah, just taking a stroll around the area, what about you?" From her pocket, Trixie's wide eyes peeked out at the boy, Dennis, and let out a small squeak in greeting.

The girl hadn’t seemed to really notice him at all or his greeting. She seemed a bit in her own little world more concerned with her predicament than awareness of her surroundings. Dennis used to be like that, more absentminded than anything else.

Dennis raised an eyebrow at the lack of a reciprocal greeting. However, perhaps she was just shy. He waved a greeting at the pigmy puff as it poked out of the girl’s pocket. He never had one before but imagined being able to carry a pet in a pocket was very convenient. Normally he just let Juliet walk beside him. He put his wand away and inspected his work, not that he meant to be staring at a girl’s legs. When he realized perhaps he was staring a little too long, he straightened with a slight blush. Hopefully she didn’t mind too much! “Looks like you are nice and dry now! One ought to be careful around the water in this temperature.”

He smiled warmly as she brushed the hair out of her face. He gestured along the shoreline and asked, “I could use a walk. Care of some company…?” He paused here waiting for her to state her name.

Nova blinked twice before snapping out of her trance, smiling gratefully at the older boy as he waved to Trixie, to which the pygmy puff popped out of her pocket cheerfully and peered up at him. Suddenly realizing she had forgotten to introduce herself, she stood up straighter and said, "Oh, right! Sorry—uh, I'm Nova. And this is Trixie.” She pointed to the creature in her pocket, who gave a chirp in acknowledgement.

Nova rolled her eyes affectionately and nudged the little creature’s head back down into her pocket before she could attempt an escape. Trixie gave a very loud huff in response to it. She noticed Dennis’ faint blush and the way he stood suddenly straighter, and the tension in her shoulders eased. He didn’t seem annoyed either, so that was good too. When he gestured down the shoreline and suggested a walk, Nova visibly brightened at the offer.

"Sure, let's go then." She fell into step beside him, brushing a loose curl behind her ear as they started down the shoreline. The warmth of the drying charm still clung faintly to her boots, making the cold afternoon feel a little less biting. She walked slightly slower than usual, still searching for more leaves to crunch. It was as if falling into the lake wasn't karma enough, and Trixie gave her the most judging expression her tiny face could muster.
