Edith thinking "Edith speaking" |
This was partially true, of course. Not many people had infinite supply of fresh air, or two legs, or two eyes or two ears. Very little people had a rat.
Edith had grown to appreciate that she could smell, hear, see, feel and walk. In her life she had met many people who missed out on these sort of things.
Once when her foster mother took her shopping, she chose the stairs over the lift.
"Who wants to stand when they can walk?" she said, and her foster mother eyed her, and left for the lift.
Edith breathed in deeply, the salty air near the river, felt the warm sunshine on her back, and was glad for an opportunity like this, when for over a week she and her rat had been stuck in a stuffy, noisy and crowded common room because of the endless rain outside.
At least the weather had cleared up, Edith thought, looking at the milky white clouds shining above her. She reached automatically for her right shoulder to stroke her rat, before she realized it was... gone.
"Lopsie?" she shouted, and immediately the feeling of peace, happiness and calmness drained out of her.
"LOPSIE! Lopsie, darling, where are you?" she called, but heard no answer. A droplet fell on her cheek, and at first Edith thought that she had started crying without noticing it, but then another and another fell. She looked up at the sky, as small, fat raindrops fell sparsely around, mimicking Edith's sunken feelings on the inside.
A bunch of Gryffindors nearby shouted at the rain, collecting their picnic and running back to the warmth inside, but Edith stayed.
She knew that she would feel cold even in boiling heat without Lopsie.
"Lopsie?" she asked gently, but heard no sound other than crunching footsteps and the gentle drip of the rain.

Permission to godmod Trixie granted :]
Sorry it's so late!
Nova hummed a light tune under her breath while taking yet another walk in the Grounds of Hogwarts. There seemed to be a lightness in the air, a calm before the storm called Halloween. Not that she didn't enjoy it! Who wouldn't want free candy and a fun costume to wear? Probably a psychopath. She snickered at the thought amusedly. In her pocket was Trixie, who was happily munching on a treat Nova had given her.
It was peaceful, until it wasn't. Something scurried near her boots, and Nova was unable to contain a small shriek, jumping as a rat practically flew past her. Trixie had a similar reaction, being much smaller than the creature at Nova's feet. Nova wasn't the type to be afraid of rats, with how many people kept them as pets, but it just seemed to startle her every time.
A voice rang across the Grounds faintly, the familiar sound reaching Nova's ears. She turned around, careful not to step on the rat, and saw Edith, the Ravenclaw she had met a short while ago. A raindrop fell straight on Nova's nose, and she shook it off in surprise. Raising a hand in greeting towards the unusually upset looking girl, Nova called out.
"Hey Edith! Are you alright?" Her eyes widened as her brain replayed their first conversation, and how the girl had mentioned owning a pet rat. Turning back towards the rat, which had already disappeared into the grass, Nova's brows furrowed in exasperation.

Edith thinking "Edith speaking" |
"Yes. I'm fine-" she began, before thinking Why am I lying? and changing tune to "no. Not really." because after all Nova Astron was her friend, she could tell her the truth.
"You see, I've lost my rat. I had him just a minute ago, but then he escaped and now I don't know where he is! Have you seen him?" she asked, without much hope of the answer being 'yes'. What was once a calming breeze turned into a howling wind, and the small raindrops turned into a storm. Edith would never find Lopsie in this weather. She wiped a tear from her face.
"But I'm fine. I'm sure he'll turn up sooner or later," she sighed miserably, as Nova sat down next to her.
"I guess we should be going back now," Edith said, gesturing uselessly at the doors. "It's... cold. We don't want to get ill," she muttered, but, despite this, Edith didn't move towards the doors and neither did Nova.
"Wait." she said suddenly. "Where is Trixie, your Pygmy Puff, Nova?" because indeed Trixie was no longer on her shoulder either. Had he found Lopsie? Were they chasing each other somewhere under the floorboards of the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry?
Edith said this all in a rush to Nova, who listened carefully. Eventually, once the rain died down slightly, they set off in search off their pets, soaking wet. Edith hoped that Lopsie wasn't too wet too.
