Her breathing ragged from her nightmare, she got up and went to her kitchen to get a glass of water. Standing up, she plodded to the sink, in the dark she turned on the tap. Huh, strange. No water came out. She hit the tap to see if that would change anything. Nope. Rubbing the sleep from her eyes, she looked around her kitchen, no lights from electrical appliances, no hum of the heating and no creaking of her old house. "Mom!?" She calls loudly.

No response.

"Mom!" She calls again, louder. Yet again, no response. So she runs to her room to see it eerily tidy, as if out of a bedroom advertisement. No personal belongings, no shoes on the floor or slight smell of older women perfume. Nothing to show that someone had lived here. Sarah's blood ran cold. "JAMES!"She quickly darted to her older brother's room. Pristine. No socks, clothes or CD's over the floor like normal, just eery cleanliness. With shaky hands, she pulled out her phone and called the emergency services..... Only to be left on voicemail. Voicemail, from the emergency services?! Sarah sprinted back to her room, wondering if that would have been mysteriously tidied too. Luckily, I was just as she'd left it, all messy with last weeks crisp packet scrunched up in the corner nearish her bin.

Sarah decided to see if her neighbours were affected, she grabbed her thickest jumper and slipped into her joggers into the early hours of the morning outside. There was a mild breeze and a slither of a moon providing a weak light source. Walking on the asphalt, she walked to number 19 and banged on the door. "Anyone there?"

Silence.

Sarah knocked again, and again. Then she tried opening it, and the door swung open with ease as if it had never been locked in its life. Cautiously, she walked into the house. The hallway was spotless, shoes neatly lines up by a locker, a mat laid by the coat hanger to catch any water. It was perfect. But wayy too perfect. It was as if Sarah was walking through a showroom, where the house had been all dolled up for sale. Quickening her pace, she walked through to the kitchen. The same forced perfection looked back at her. Getting panicked, she knocked over the fake fruit bowl, and watched as they scattered across the shiny wooden floor.

Her heart rate was racing by now. Why was everything perfect? Where had everyone gone? Rushing to the next house, same thing. And the next and the next and the next. Sarah felt like she was going to throw up. Every. Single. House. In her neighbourhood was empty. But not as if no people were there at that moment, No. Empty as if nobody had lived there. Ever.

All the fireplaces were lined with stock images of families, a range of ethnicities, some had dogs others had cats and one had six children. It was terrifying. It was as if everyone had been erased from existence. Sarah felt her skin getting clammy, throat dry, her hands trembling slightly, her heart seemed to just get faster and faster, her breathing becoming difficult. Sarah pulled out her phone with trembling hands, nearly dropping it twice, and rung every single number on her contact list. Every single one of the two -hundred and twelve contacts rang to voicemail.

Dread sunk into Sarah's bones, she walked back to her house and locked the door behind her and barricaded her bedroom door shut as if to protect herself from this unknown threat. She huddled under the duvet covering her head and begged that this was just a dream.

After what seemed like hours, Sarah slowly climbed out from her bed, and went to the kitchen and pulled out a weapon just in case. She went to her bedroom and pulled out the biggest rucksack she owns, and as her parents are (or I guess were) hikers they were pretty big. She shoves jumpers, socks, underwear, leggings, t-shirts and two of her nice dresses into her rucksack. Then she grabs a toothbrush, hairbrush and phone charger- wire and plug. Pulling up her socks and tightening her walking boots, she pulls on her full rucksack and walks back out into the eerily clean neighbourhood.

The sun was rising over the rows of shiny roofs, painting the neighbourhood in reds, oranges and yellows. The Cirrus clouds looked like frost art across the window- stretching on for the whole of Sarah's eyeline. It was peaceful, no babies crying, no kids yelling to catch the bus, just a few birds in the distance singing their morning tune.

Wait- the birds are still here, breaking into a run, Sarah ran towards the sound of the birds. Hope flaring in her chest, birds. Beautiful birds. Beautifully alive birds. Skidding to a halt in the clearing, her eyes darted around desperately, needing to see something, anything else alive. Horror, recoiled in her chest, they weren't birds, they were metal lumps shaped like birds, playing the joyful tune. Now, Sarah could hear the tinniness of the speakers and the lack of emotion on the music from these lumps of metal. Her face closes in on itself in regret, Was she the only living thing left despite the plants and bacteria? Was she the last thing left that couldn't reproduce asexually? Sarah's mind quickly got overwhelmed with question after question after question.

Unfortunately, Sarah didn't notice the metal bird's eyes were flashing red, as if recording...

Just realised this; but similar idea to the 'incredibles' scene. I promise this wasn't trying to be plagiarized!
The bird's eye continues flashing. "Name ID please," the bird says robotically. Sarah looks up at it. The metal bird was intricately detailed, every single feather engraved into the metal body, every single metal melded perfectly together to create a seamless bird shape. The metal eyes were shined so give it that spark of life, that beady glare. The beak so pointed it looked like a weapon. The legs like small straws, so detailed you could make out every single ridge and bump. The claws also looked like pointed fingernails which seemed to give an impression of a lion rather then a small bird. "Cool" Sarah muttered, and the bird's beak open.
"Wrong ID entered"
...
"Wrong ID entered"
...
"Wrong ID entered"

Sarah steps closer, "Wait a second..." But it was too late, the bird leans forward and opens its mouth and an alarm sound plays as if she'd done something wrong. She clamps her hands over her head and looks which way to go frantically. She turns and runs from the bird, only to have it follow with that loud alarm sound. "Shut up you stupid bird!" Sarah swings her hands at it, only for them to be cut on the way too pointed claws. She winces loudly, with a hissing intake of breath.

"Data collected, please remain still for scanning." The bird hovers by her face, metal clamps sprouting from the ground and around her feet, trapping her still. "Hey let me go!!" The bird ignores her continuing its scan, the metal clamps digging into her feet, making them go numb, like when you've played out in the snow too much. Sarah tried to pull her feet out of the restraints but human strength is no match for the code of a machine. "Let me go... Please?" Sarah voice trembled, uncertain if this bird is a friend of foe, whether it will hurt her again or not.

This time the bird pauses, as if assessing the fear in her eyes, "Please remain calm" It says with slightly less robotic ness than before. The robot bird continues it scan of her body, it then moves to her hand which is still bleeding. "Injury detected, healing now" A small band-aid appears in the birds metal claws and it applied gently despite its earlier aggression. "Resuming scan"

Four minutes later, the bird gives Sarah a card, it has no name, no photo, just a code.
#28756 Guest
"Scan complete, free to go #28756 Guest." Sarah just stands there bewildered, the light plastic card in her hand. The metal restraints release her feet and the warmth of blood flows back into her toes. With a sigh of relief, she takes a hesitant step back, then another, then another. Waiting for the bird to react. It just stays still as if switched off. Sarah takes her chance and turns and sprints away from it, her heart pumping in her ears her breathing heavy . Her hand gripping the card for some reason, as if she couldn't let go. But Sarah didn't focus on that, only focusing on getting as far away from that robotic monstrosity.

After running until she can't anymore, Sarah takes a look at around at her surroundings, to find herself back in the ghost town village. Her once bustling with life and chatter home village now a desolate model village. She lets out and annoyed yell. "Seriously?! Is this some kind of twisted prank? There's no fricking way everyone has just disappeared! Hello.... you've had your fun... jokes over guys!" Sarah yells into the quiet town. "You are kidding me" Forgetting that she had checked all these houses before she storms into the nearest one. "If you are here, come out and stop me from wrecking your house!" The young girl yells into the silence. When there is no response, she huffs and grabs a vase and chucks it onto the floor, shattering instantly. The blue shards scattering across the pristine marble floor like water. Sarah smirks and kicks them out the way, then she walks to the bathroom and puts the plugs in and turns the taps onto full allowing the taps to overflow the sink after running for some time.

With a grin, getting into the destructive behaviour, she walks into the kitchen and opens the plate drawer. Picking three up at a time, she drops them onto the floor, over and over and over again, till there is no percaline plates left in the draw. The marble floor now looks like its littered with egg shells.

Turning to the windows, she grabbed a chair and hurls it towards the glass. It shatters with that satisfying sound. "Really? No-one is going to stop me? Oi Robots you here?!"Silence. Then it hits Sarah, what if she really is the last person left on earth? She grabs her phone and starts a livestream on TikTok.

"Hey world, my name is Sarah White. Is anyone out there? Cos everywhere around me is empty and so so clean. Im scared..." She leaves it playing and watches the views like a hawk.

Hours later

Sarah stirs, and her livestream is still playing. She instantly checks the views. Zero. Zero in the past 14 hours. Reluctantly, she stops the stream and leaves the house in ruin. Slowly, she walks up to the edge of the forest she ran from earlier. "Oi Guest 217....whatever is here!" As soon as she says that the robot from earlier appears. "Take me to your leader!"
