xxxxxxxx𝔑oticing the faint smile on Livia’s face, Cecilia felt one of her own tug at her lips. It seemed to suit her. Relief soon followed, for she had remembered the girl’s name correctly. However, this moment was fleeting, and her eyes widened in shock as another realisation struck – she had failed to introduce herself.

“Oh, how rude of me!” she gasped, her cheeks flushed pink as panic seared. “I’m Cecilia. Cecilia Merrick. Pleased to make your acquaintance,” she said meekly, her tone softened into politeness. Something about the air around the young snake seemed to command respect. The young witch had never met a first-year student who carried herself with such authority – perhaps this contributed to why she was well-suited to being a captain.

Before the thought could settle, movement on the pitch caught her eye and drew her attention away. A soft gasp escaped her lips as she blinked in disbelief, trying to process what she had just witnessed. Their chaser had scored fifty points in the first round. The feat seemed so brutal that she nearly winced for the eagles.

Nearly.

Instead, a delighted grin stretched across her face as she sprang to her feet and applauded enthusiastically. The fabric that rested on her lap slipped, and she quickly stretched her hand out, snatching it. Had she been a moment too late, the wind would have likely claimed it. Clutching the banner, she turned to Livia excitedly.

“How brilliant was that?” she exclaimed, beaming with so much joy she nearly threw her arms around the girl. Fortunately, she caught herself in time. For all she knew, the girl was still recovering from her recent duelling match. Cecilia feared that a sudden hug could slow down her recovery or even threaten any budding friendship between them. That would be a shame.

Then came the reassuring words from Livia, and the tension in her shoulders dissipated. “I’m glad you think so. You seem to have a good eye,” she smiled as she leaned back in her chair. “This is my second game, if you count the one from earlier today. I’ve always wanted to see one, but today is my first time in the stands. Though that might be obvious,” she explained while running her fingers over the fabric banner. A short laugh quickly followed her last sentence as she recalled her embarrassing display.

“How did you become acquainted with Quidditch?” She asked, tilting her head slightly as she observed the girl. Though it was slightly unsettling to look her directly in the eye, Cecilia felt somewhat intrigued. How could she remain so composed after suffering such a harsh blow? The thought of someone displaying such resilience was rather fascinating, for it was a trait she often wished she possessed. She contemplated mentioning it, but quickly deemed the topic inappropriate – this was neither the time nor the place.

A sudden gust swept through the stands, breaking through her thoughts and tousling her hair. Though Cecilia was bundled up, the chill made her shiver slightly. She then furrowed her brows, growing concerned about Livia.

“You’re not too cold, are you? The wind is much harsher than I expected. I don’t have any warm drink to offer, but we could share my scarf,” she offered, unwinding part of her scarf with one hand before extending it toward the girl. The long fabric already seemed to swallow most of her anyway; it would make no difference to share some of it. Perhaps this was presumptuous of her, but Cecilia did not want the weather to wear down her new companion.

With Lucille disappearing after the last game, Leo was left in the stands with Cecilia. He was happy he got to enjoy the first game with his friends instead of alone like he thought might happen. Now that the first game was done the next game, and arguably most important to Leo personally, was about to begin. He hoped his house team would do well today so that they would have a little house pride. But also maybe partially so he could brag about it for a while to Cecilia who was definitely going to hold it over him if her team wins. He knew his friend Damien was on the team so he was also excited to see him out there too, although it made him want to be out there on the pitch more and more as he saw the members of the Ravenclaw team flying out.

As he waited for the start of the next game, Leo looked around the stands for Rosaline as she was going to come up to join him. She promised to join him to watch this game with him as soon as she could escape from the team. Honestly he was excited to get to watch the game with her this time since he just got done watching her team and he wanted to show off the little sign he made to her. Finally through the crowd of students coming and going, he spotted her and smiled as she waved over to them. Suddenly Cece had gotten up from her seat, gathering her things and smiling down at him. Confused, he glanced up at her as she spoke. “Move? Where..? Okay, no worries.” He said confused as to how moving would help her to be seen from the stands but also decided he wasn’t going to question it further. He laughed softly at her comment, shaking his head, “Cece, I wish your team luck because really they will need it since my team will be leaving them in the dust.” He playfully said to her and gave a small wave as she walked away, “See you later!”

As Cece left, Rosaline joined him, replacing one friend with another in the seat beside him. “Hi Rosa,” He said back to her as she made it over to him and sat down next to him. With her words he couldn’t help but let a smile creep across his face. It was heart warming to hear that she was so touched by them cheering her on in the earlier game. Now he was feeling that being there, in the cold fall weather with his butt hurting from sitting so long, was worth it to see how happy she was now. “Of course,” He said as he rubbed his hands together to warm them up again. “I wasn’t going to miss your first game-” He started to say but quickly added on, “And Fred and Avery too. It was fun to yell for another team besides my own house, even though I am completely dressed head to toe for this game.” Leo chuckled before glancing down at the signs in his lap and then scooted the one from the earlier game towards Rosa. “Here, I made this for the first game, you can take it back with you if you want it.”

With the game getting ready to begin, Leo was excited to see what would happen. He stretched his legs out in front of him and noticed Rosaline shiver next to him. Turning to look at her, he saw she definitely looked cold now that she was sitting up here in the stands versus down with the team in her quidditch uniform. He stood up from his seat, placing his Ravenclaw sign in his spot and held up the empty hot chocolate mug from earlier. “I’ll go get us some hot chocolates to warm us up while we watch the game.” Leo glanced back out at the pitch as they were starting the game and turned back to Rosa. “Let me know what I miss, okay?” He asked her with a smile before sneaking past her and leaving the stands to go grab the drinks for the two of them.

Once he was able to get the drinks he made his way back up to where Rosa was and sat down beside her again. He handed her the drink with a smile, “Here you go! Now what did I miss?” Leo looked out to the pitch and was confused at what was going on with his own house team. “What is happening?” His hands cupped the mug full of hot chocolate tight, letting the heat warm his hands once more as he watched. “Oh my- this is not a great start..” He admitted sadly watching the team look about as confused as he was.

It was the beginning of the game season, and Frederick couldn’t have been more excited. His very first official Quidditch match at Hogwarts had come to an end: Gryffindor, his house, against the Hufflepuff team. He wasn’t a first-string player yet, but most likely, even playing as a reserve, he would remember this match forever.

With the final whistle, the boy followed his team into the locker room and didn’t budge until the captains finished the last words of their post-game speeches. However, the moment he realized they wouldn’t say anything else, Fred hurried to get changed and, doing it as fast as he could, switched from his Quidditch gear to his usual clothes: blue jeans, a white T-shirt, a dark red knitted sweater, and a navy waterproof jacket.

All the hurry had a reason: he wanted to watch the next match between Slytherin and Ravenclaw. Walking briskly out of the locker room on his way back to the stands, Fred finished wrapping his red-and-mustard striped scarf around his neck, not wanting to waste a second. Focused on walking and putting on the scarf at the same time, he had to backtrack a few steps when he almost walked right past a familiar face.

Frederick froze mid-step, turned around, and looked at Lucille. The girl was clearly heading in the opposite direction, meaning she was on her way back to the castle. “Lucille! I can’t believe you’re already leaving.” Fred sounded genuinely shocked, though he smiled, giving his expression a light tone. Something about his love for the sport made him forget that she wasn’t much of a Quidditch fan, something he had learned the day they first met. “Rosaline and Leo are waiting so we can watch the next game. Why don’t you come with me?”

And without even waiting for an answer, or starting any kind of small talk before getting straight to the point, Frederick took Lucille by the hand and resumed walking toward the stands. “Never mind. You’re coming with me. I bet they will be thrilled that you’re watching the match with us.” He walked with less haste now, but still guided Lucille all the way to the start of the stands, he wouldn’t let her slip away so easily. Even though he’d grabbed her hand, Fred never did so in a rough or forceful way, on the contrary, he matched her pace and didn’t squeeze, so the girl could have stopped walking and let go at any moment if she wanted to.

And, in fact, it was Fred who let go of Lucille’s hand so he could start climbing the steps toward where Rosaline and Leo were. He had to stop twice, scanning the crowd to make sure he had spotted the pair and to confirm that Lucille was following him. With more than half the distance to them covered, Fred raised both arms in the air and waved with a big smile, calling out, “Rosa! Leo!” before picking up his pace again and stopping only when he reached the same row as the two. “Phew, did I make it in time? Look who I brought with me.” Frederick grinned again, glancing between Rosa and Leo before turning to Lucille and taking a seat.

Maisie sat there with half the weight of her sign in her hand utterly stressed. This was not the way it was supposed to go. The entire school knew when Maisie Gemmell stepped on the duelling piste, she would lose. But when Avis Greymond stepped onto the Quidditch pitch, this was not supposed to go this way.

Percy said they could turn it around—and that her yelling might have helped. With a chuckle, she agreed, "Yeah, that'd be good." And maybe it did help a little bit as Ravenclaw managed to pick up a few quaffle points. Though that one time Winnie just randomly dropped the quaffle was weird. "It's okay if you want to cheer for—"

The considerate word 'them' completely flew out of her mind as her eyes locked on Avis, who seemed very focused. Maisie's eyes narrowed in reply. She knew her best friend was up to something, and it was gonna be good. And yet, she swallowed hard as Avis approached what had to be the single biggest Slytherin on the field—probably the biggest Slytherin she'd ever seen. "She's gonna hit him—she's so close—" she tried to keep up, waving the sign, as she watched as it looked like Avis was about jostle the giant beater off his broom.

Until the whistle blew.

"Darn," she let out as leaned back into her seat. It was unfortunate not only that—she glanced at a roster list she'd grabbed off Avis' desk—this other Percival had gotten away, but that she'd been noticed too. With everything that had happened, this was not the time for a penalty lap. "Did you bring any snacks?" she asked Percy, thinking chewing on pasty might make this better.

As time thundered by, fluttering, speeding like the figure-eight of a hummingbird's iridescent, kaleidoscopically-dappled wings, so did the players in the blue-and-green robes. One zoomed so close to the stands that Livia held onto the seat in front of her, her nimble fingers closing and whitening as her grip tightened, to ensure she remained standing. Although at first, Slytherin had appeared to be passable, as time drew onwards, Ravenclaw were proving more than an adequate match for the smaller, spindlier snakes.

Livia glanced away from the game, but not before filing a mental note to tell the team's members to be quicker. Celerity was of the essence in any sport, even chess; certainly any burly knave could elucidate that. She returned her gaze to Cecilia, who had introduced herself with pleasant politesse lingering in her words. This, Livia could hold in lofty esteem. However, it was with the full vision of her optics that she observed Cecilia grow louder and lean towards her; the movement brought Livia a reminiscence of her brother desiring a hug. However, Cecilia, with her bright red locks and overall intelligent appearance, was not Julian, who lacked both of those things. Something rooted itself within Livia's stomach, perhaps a slight twist of confusion. Determined not to sully Cecilia's perception of her, Livia pulled her lips upward at the corners. 'Yes, simply marvellous,' she mused after a moment's thought. 'Pity it didn't manage to last. Certainly, we will focus on that during our practices – it is of the utmost importance to maintain an advantage when one has one.'

Cecilia's quick words, as light as the wings of a butterfly on a westerly breeze, flitting daintily from petal to petal in search of sustenance, kept Livia quiet for longer than she would have wished. She lacked the cognisance to bring sustenance to someone for whom liveliness hardly seemed a vexation. Her thin lips pressed together as she pondered, which caused her skin to pull more tautly over her already-sharp features, for an eleven-year-old. Her voice was soft, warm, like the bow of a cello drifting across the D string, a soft rasp like rosin against horsehair keeping her words tethered to the earth. 'The games at school are the first games of many. I suppose my first experience with Quidditch came at my grandfather's estate. I had received a toy broom for my birthday, but as my brother wanted a turn, my grandfather let me fly about on his far nicer broom. I then got to chase after a Quaffle with my brother. It was not a very difficult match. I do not think I would fare quite as splendiferously among these athletes.'

Livia offered Cecilia a quick glance, a soft upturn of her lips paired with a glimmer in her graminaceous gaze, and folded her hands in front of her. She pulled her shoulders backwards in a stretch that doubled as a minor adjustment of her posture; something in her spine popped, and it took a great deal of her tenacity not to smile contentedly. 'And you? Although this is your first game, you seem to understand the objectives. Have you held an interest in Quidditch?'

A tweet echoed from the pitch, and Livia lifted her chin and stared outwards, a small, almost stifled, sigh making her breath puff out in the chilly air in front of her. She did not comment on the necessity of a penalty lap, but instead tapped her fingers against one another. 'I must opine, one day there ought to be a Quidditch strategist with a stroke of ingenuity who deciphers a method of economising the abominable penalty lap,' she mused.

At Cecilia's next words, though, a dusty-rose shade of pink scattered itself across Livia's cheeks. Despite her affection for a warm, soft, well-patterned scarf, she rarely, if ever, had even shared them with her beloved brother, the individual she certainly thought herself closest to. Nonetheless, her attention drifted to the green-and-silver scarf, which swayed in the wind as if it were a branch of low-hanging fruit just beckoning to the ill-starred Tantalus. She was unable to halt a well-meaning smile from lingering on her lips as she budged closer to Cecilia. 'That's very kind of you, Cecilia,' she articulated softly. 'I would be blithesome to share the warmth of the scarf with you – of course, if it is not an intrusion.'
