Flower Fall

How can arranging flowers become detrimental? Easy, ask Jade. Why? Because she was currently facing a life or death situation that involved the stairs and flowers. And hanging off from the stairs by flowers.
Not too long ago Professor McTavish had asked for his students to place vases full of flowers around the school in order to honor Valentine's Day, a day Jade never cared much for besides the candy and the way people looked lovey-dovey at each other. Jade never cared much for the weird affection part, she just wanted the candies and the entertainment, like watching people interact awkwardly. But flower arrangement was okay, and she had picked out just the right place.
The castle had several flowers, and the rotating stairs helped navigate to each one in different ways. Now Jade wasn't sure if she'd be able to decorate each one, for that'd become a tiring experience, having to wait for just the right moment so she quickly decorate the stairs before they moved again. That's why she had figured to just decorate the most commonly used ones so people could get the concept and perhaps even join in, it didn't matter much to her.
She had dragged two bags full of flowers up the stairs, somewhere at a middle point, so she could figure out where to start. Along the way Jade had munched from a bowl of treats she had seen laying around in the Hufflepuff common room, not noticing that she had left a trail. Usually she would've been more careful but she didn't think it was a big deal; the candy was for everyone anyways, right?
Currently Jade wasn't thinking of that, no, not at all. Why? Because currently Jade was hanging 'by a thread' from the stairs, one that had moved when she hadn't expected it to. One moment she was attaching the lines of flowers—it was supposed to resemble vines, but she had limited resources—and the next she had flipped backwards over the bannister, clinging tightly to the feeble 'rope'.
Even though the wind had been knocked out of her because she'd hit the back of the stairs, Jade still managed to cling to the rope for dear life. Her eyes were wide with fear and she was slowly beginning to panic, even though she told herself it was okay. But looking down at the dizzying height was daunting as anything.
She made not attempt to climb upwards because the line was not very thick and had a good chance of snapping. And she was too far down to get leverage with her feet. All Jade could do as she hung from the bouquet of flowers was cry out for help, first softly and then loudly as possible.
“SOMEONE PLEASE HELP MEEEEEEEEEE!” A single tear trickled along her flushed cheek. “Please...?”

Wren was calmly and quietly walking back to her dorm room eating a box of Bertie Botts’s Every flavored Beans, consumed with the thought of sleep. She had a long day ahead of her tomorrow. Almost every class had a test. Yes, it may have only been after lunch. Yes, she would be skipping her study class. She figured, why not take a nap instead of doing homework she could do at night?

She stopped suddenly hearing the cries of someone in distress. She threw out the box of Bertie Bott’s Every Flavored Beans she had been eating (yes, some were disgusting but she still faced it) and started to run towards the voice. She turned the corner and came straight up to the edge of the moving staircases.
She saw a girl hanging from one of them holding a rope? She squinted. It looked more like a vine to her, but then again that might just have been because there were so many flowers around her. It looked like the mysterious girl had been trying to put flowers up around the staircases but when one had started to move, she had been flung off the edge and was hanging by a literal thread. Wren laid down on her stomach and reached her hand out.
“Here take my hand” she yelled “Let’s see if we can get you up.”
Wren didn’t think she could pull up this girl by herself. Seeing as she wasn’t very strong, she needed someone else to help. She decided to leave it to fate.

Kevin grunted as he lugged more flowers up the stairs in a box. He was strong yes, but who knew flowers could weigh this much? He didn't really think about it, had simply done what his friend had told him to do. When he had arrived at the staircases, nothing really seemed off. The banisters were covered with beautiful flowers and he really couldn't think of any other colors that went so well than the ones his friend, Jade had picked out. So, you could imagine his shock when he had made his way further up the stairs to see Jade hanging off the steps with some mysterious girl trying to help her.
"Jade! What the heck are you doing? How did you get down there?" Kevin didn't bother carrying the box of flowers up the stairs, he had let them fall before quickly running towards the two girls, "I'm coming, Jade!" Dropping down onto his stomach, Kevin reached down to help his friend. He was so going to give her a good talking too. He had left her alone for five minutes, having to go and get more flowers. A part of him felt as if this was his fault, perhaps he shouldn't have left her alone.
"Don't look down, Jade. Just grab our hands. We'll pull you up, I promise." Kevin tried not to sound worried. His friend was in danger, literally so close to plummeting to her possible death. "Professor MacTavish is most definitely going to give us detention." Kevin laughed weakly as he reached further down. He pushed those thoughts from his mind. He much rather deal with detention than risk going to get a professor on the off chance his friend could fall.

Reid was notified of a thief by one of his fellow badgers, of course that was a bit of an overstatement. He didn't think there was much wrong with taking candy from the very public candy bowl. However, he did have an issue with the littering that he saw. The prefect followed this trail of wrappers, picking them up as he went so that there was no trash in the way.
Since becoming prefect again, he became more confident in his role and didn't shy so easy from giving someone some much earned punishment. But in this case, he didn't really have that in mind. All he cared about was making sure the student knew that he or she couldn't just use the school as a dumping yard. However, some screaming caught his attention and his mere strut turned into a panicked sprint.
He came face to face with the three students, one of which was dangling dangerous from the end of the stairs. "Oh, Merlin's -" Reid jogged up two steps of stairs at a time, nearly tripping before he came over to help the other two students. "Okay, hold on." he calmly spoke. He was a beater for the Hufflepuff team, so pulling her up with the effort of the other two wasn't much of a challenge.
But from the looks of things, she was the culprit for this whole fiasco and the wrappers too. The pocket of his cardigan was filled with the candy shells that the young Hufflepuff just left around. WC: 263

Even though her end was imminent, Jade focused more on the act of dying than the act of not dying. People in her situation usually tried to avoid death by figuring how to get out but now Jade was panicking so much she could hardly think. The idea of falling was really getting to her and usually she wasn't that bothered by heights. Maybe it had been because at first no one was around to help so she thought she was going to go out all alone, but she then remembered Kevin.
She was thinking of where he was, and was about to shout again, when she heard hurried footsteps—actually, several of them, and they were coming from different directions. But Jade couldn't look because she was dangling too far down to see...to see who was coming, to be more specific.
Jade swung back and forth slowly as she tried not to move. But her efforts not to move was making her actually move. She whimpered as the fake vine creeked, like it was warning her early about her impending doom. Tears stained her cheeks; she was done crying, but she wasn't any less scared.
Suddenly she heard the voice of a girl. She managed to catch a glimpse of hair before an arm was shoved her way. The girl was telling her to grab her hand but instead of even trying Jade just shook her head and closed her eyes, clinging even tighter to the rope. This was getting more difficult by the minute because her fear she had begun to sweat, and that was very bad for getting a grip of things.
“N-no, I can't—” Jade screeched as she slipped down a few more centimeters, just as Kevin came into hearing distance. She heard the franticness in his voice and she bit her lip, trying to look everywhere but at him. His panic was only going to make hers worse.
“I'm too far down,” she said through gritted teeth.
Then another voice came along, this time less frantic than the others. It was really low, calm, and soothing, enough to make Jade actually open her eyes. She glanced up and saw three faces but the newest one made her go from hopeful to dread; it was Reid Kovacs, prefect of Hufflepuff. He might not have known her personally, but he would soon enough—given the past devious stunts she had commited—and because of her situation currently. She should've known better than decorate these stupid moving staircases.
Jade groaned, feeling her arms began to shake uncontrollably. “I-I can't move. I'm going to fall if I do.” She looked at the rope and then said, gaining her ability to think now. “Can you guys try to pull me back up by the rope...slowly, please?”

Wren didn't know what to do. Luckily an unfamiliar boy had come up and tried to help her pull the girl up. She didn't know his name or the girls name but that hardly mattered now. The girl asked them to pull her up as slowly.
"I'll, um try, I just hope we can save you from your death." She chuckled then quickly realized she had gone too far. This was the kind of thing that had made people not like her in the past so if she wanted to avoid that she had to stop making crude comments, and start making complements and encouragement come out of her mouth.
She quickly apologized.
"I-I'm sorry that was way out of place. I shouldn't have said that" She looked away embarrassed then quickly looked back realizing that if she looked away and lost her focus for just one second this girl could plunge to her death.
As she was thinking this, another boy came up and started helping them. This one she recognized. He was the prefect of Hufflepuff, Reid Kovacs. She had seen him around, and in her mind he was pretty handsome. She decided to talk to him.
"Hey, Reid could you use some of that man power" she gestured to his muscles "To hook this poor girl by her underarms and safely pull her up?"
Wren figured it didn't hurt to flirt with a guy every now and then. Just this past day she and Rafael D'Spacito had been paired by Olphie thinking they were a couple and that they liked each other. Don't get me wrong, Rafa was handsome but he had a boyfriend and Wren herself already liked a specific girl.

The girl with the unfamiliar face was amusing, in Kevin's opinion anyway. She didn't mind voicing her thoughts, and though that was acceptable at times, now probably wasn't a good time either. "Don't worry about being out of place. I think it would look pretty bad if Hogwarts let a girl die from falling from the stairs." Kevin's voice was lighthearted, he was trying to really lighten the tension that was slowly growing. So, you could imagine his relief when he heard the hurried footsteps of a third person. That voice sounded familiar. Turning his head slightly, Kevin tried to see who it was.
"H-Hey, you're Reid, aren't you? The prefect for Hufflepuff right?" Kevin asked, grunting slightly as he looked over to see Reid. A guy with muscles like that he was sure they could pull Jade back over the banister. Kevin wasn't going to question why his thoughts went to Reid's muscles.
"Merlin's beard, no offense Jade. But next time you want to decorate, at least let me know before you go jumping over banisters." Kevin was probably overreacting but Jade was his friend and he did not want to lose the very first friend he had made. He grunted slightly as he held onto the 'rope'. He grunted slightly as he said to Jade, "The good thing is; the banister looks great!"

"You lot have your hands full, huh?" The student braced himself with a meek smile, flattered by the compliment offered. It earned her a small laugh from him as he listened to her suggestion. "That can work." Quinn could probably get her up with ease, he had height and strength to boot. Reid's height was fairly average for his age after all. He leaned down and over, deciding to hook his arm from under her once she was close enough.
"But yeah, I'm the prefect for Hufflepuff." He wasn't wearing a Hufflepuff uniform, he didn't have classes at the moment. But his black and yellow scarf was perhaps a good enough indicator for the other two. His eyes drifted to the mention of a banister and he put two and two together. An even bigger smile graced his features. "You did this? It's some nice work, might just save you a talking to from me in regards to these candy wrappers I found on the way here."
Valentine's was just around the corner, this was definitely going to be a nice change in scene to come back to. Maybe she got caught up in the flower decoration and forgot to pick up what she left behind? Regardless, he knew it was starting to annoy some students seeing the bits just laying around.
He was guilty of it every now and then, so it felt a little hypocritical of him to speak to her about it. Reid had become generally less interested in that though and more into what the girl was doing before she dangerously began dangling from the side. WC: 280

Jade groaned loudly, in a very exaggerated way, as a brief conversation took place above. She was especially annoyed because the girl was flirting, of all things. Weren't they supposed to be focused on preventing her demise? Hello, an extremely young Hufflepuff was dangling from really high above, here! She was about to complain when she suddenly felt herself being tugged upwards. At first she was worried, knowing that even though the fake vines were thick, they weren't the most sturdy of things, especially considering she had make them using a muggle mindset, gathering as many resources as she could.
Energy suddenly rippled through her as she felt hands under her arms. She was being lifted to safety. Relief flooded her mind and she kept but let out a gasp of laughter. But then when she noticed that it was the Perfect—her Prefect—helping her up, she immediately clambered over the bannister, helping herself. Her face was flushed for a good reason but she hoped that they thought it was because she had been scared, and not because she was a troublesome child.
Jade cleared her throat and nodded at the three of them with a look of gratitude. “Thank you...I mean, I didn't really think I was going to die, anyhow, but it's better to be safe than sorry.” She then glared at Kevin. She opened her mouth to say something that was meant to be mean but then she recalled the genuine concern in his voice when she saw her plight. Instead Jade just looked away, trying to keep her face neutral but one could tell that she was still a bit shaken.
Reid, who thankfully still didn't know her name—or did he? Hadn't Kevin called it out?—took in her decorations and seemed to be impressed. That made her a little happy, because she knew that it looked good, but then he added in something about a 'talking' and dread filled her. She was able to hide it behind nonchalance by shrugging.
“It's candy wrappers. Let the house elves pick them up.” She rolled her eyes and went back to her bag of flowers. There were still a lot to put up. “Anyways, I'm not even close to finished. You guys want to help or do you have other amazing things to do...” Her eyes flicked to the girl. “Like flirting, perhaps.” There was no hint of jealousy in her voice; Jade was plainly mocking the girl but she wouldn't be surprised if her playful banter was taken the wrong way. Years of practice gave her a sly tongue.

Reid had ended up coming up and helping them pull the girl --Jade-- up. The other boy with them had yet to introduce himself. He had helped yes, but in Wren's mind, he might want to exercise a bit.
As per usual someone started to mock her. She decided to take it playfully and laughed about the comment Jade had made about her flirting. She didn't have a huge desire to make more enemies but honestly, what was one more?
"Sure" she replied, "I'll stay and help decorate I guess. I'm only giving up my afternoon nap for this."
Reid had said something about the candy wrappers that Jade had apparently left lying around, then after saying that, Jade of all people told him to let the house elves pick them up. In Wren's book that was like telling slaves to do the work because you're too lazy to do yourself. Wren decided to speak her mind.
