"Muggle studies.....muggle studies....WHERE in Merlin's beard is muggle studies!" I yelled at myself.
Muggle studies was the one class I thought to be an easy win. I grew up in a household with a muggle parent and until I showed my abilities we lived in a typical muggle home. I knew how to send text messages, I could work a toaster and I swear if half the pureblood kids here heard a microwave beep they would jump out of their skin. I should be able to pass this class with my eyes closed. That is if I could find the blasted classroom.
"Okay, you gave yourself plenty of time, you have about 5 mins left to find it." I mumbled to myself. "I'm sure its this floor, so it should be first left, then 2 rights and a left again and I'm there" I pulled myself together and off I went steamrolling down the corridor. A couple minutes went by, and I could swear I walked passed the same two suits of armour twice.
I even tried asking a portrait for help, but all he did was complain about someone jostling his frame and how the “sunlight was peeling his oils again.” The staircases were no help either, one started moving just as I stepped on it, and next thing I knew I was in a different corridor all together.
"That is it" I stopped walking. "Professor Cantu can just give me detention, I'm done" I collapsed against a wall and slid down it until my knees were against my chest.
I rested my head back against the cool stone surface, my head dropping to one side so it was sort of resting on a portrait, to be precise a portrait of a pointed nose man, with some questionable clothing and a chalk board with some writing on it that I couldn't quite make out.
“Well, this is a bit dramatic,” he sniffed. “Have you tried not collapsing in public like some defeated pudding?”
I closed my eyes and pinched the bridge of my nose. “Just need a minute.”
“Oh yes, of course. Let the first-years sulk in the corridor. That’s what I’m here for, clearly. A glorified headrest.”
I didn’t even have the strength to answer him. I just exhaled, the sounds of the castle muffled behind the blood in my ears and the growing headache attacking my temples.
First week at Hogwarts.
Supposed to be the start of everything.
And here I was, head against a wall, next to a rather condescending painting and late for the one class I knew a lot about.
The portrait huffed beside me.
“You know, in my day, students had dignity. Direction. Decent posture.”
I let my forehead fall between my knees.
“Yeah,” I whispered. “Well. Lucky them.”

The human voice seemed a bit young to be so concerned with muggle studies, a class only available to students in at least their third year of schooling. Poor guy... Adeline felt herself soften a bit at his dilemma. Deciding that it would be cruel to turn a blind eye and let the boy fend for himself, Addie decided that a touch of gentle redirection was due. After all, Adeline was painfully familiar with the growing pains associated with the first year at Hogwarts. The young raven turned on her heels and began striding towards the pair, ebony robe sent billowing behind her.
"You can always just tell the portraits to piss off , you know." Her black patent mary janes tapped aggressively across the corridor floor as the distance closed. Her ocean eyes shifted to the snarky figure on the wall. "As a matter of fact my friend, you can PISS OFF." Adeline barked at the portrait, hoping she had not startled the first year too much. As expected, the framed man was all talk, and not a bit of action. Judging from his suddenly puckered face and saucer-like eyes, Adeline's intensity shut him up... at least for the time being.
Finally taking a moment to survey the boy led for a moment of unexpected pity. He looked almost wilted, slumped over against the wall, clearly agitated by his inability to find the class that he would be unable to attend. Adeline wouldn't have that.
"I hate to be the barer of bad news here, but muggle studies has certain ... requirements students must meet. " Adeline's eyebrows furrowed as she debated the most gentle way of proceeding. She squatted down to meet the boys defeated gaze. "Even if you did find muggle studies, I have a sneaking suspicion that you are not a third year wizard. Would that be correct of me to assume, mister....?" Her voice trailed off as she waited for his name.

I let out a sharp exhale and pulled myself from the floor. It was fine to be obviously frustrated alone or with friends, but not in front of people I had just met. Gave off bad first impressions. “Hi… er… yeah, not a third year, and it’s just Cane—no ‘Mister’ required,” I added, trying to sound like I hadn’t just been on the floor arguing with a portrait.
“And… thanks for that,” I said, nodding back at the portrait that had been hassling me only moments before. “I haven’t quite figured out how to deal with most of them yet.”
After my introduction, I took a moment, dug through my robes, and pulled out a crumpled sheet of parchment. “Are you sure it’s a third-year course? See, I have this…” I extended the parchment toward her. “One of the older students had been handing them out—kind of a helping hand, or something. It’s supposed to have a basic guide to getting to each of your classes.”
I smoothed the parchment as best I could, though the corners were bent and the ink slightly smudged. "You see, I've had charms, then its Muggle Studies and then Defence against the Dark Arts"
I ran a hand through my hair and let out another frustrated breath. Honestly, it seemed like Ravenclaws just kept appearing around me. My mum had been a Ravenclaw, a couple of the few friends I’d actually made here were Ravenclaws, and now… well, here was another one, apparently coming to my rescue. So to top the fact that the castle was playing tricks on me, all the people I kept meeting came from the house I had hoped to be in. How ironic.
“Sorry...rambling. Where are my manners, so I'm Cane and may I have the pleasure of the name of my rescuer?” A warm beaming smile spreading across my face.
