✮ A Growing Friendship ✮
When Airlia entered the courtyard she was smiling. It wasn't rare per se for her to do so, but on this particular day, it should be noted. Her entire day had been perfect and nothing could ruin it. The sun was shining, students were everywhere. Some were using the courtyard as a shortcut to get to their classes and others just hang out there.
Airlia belonged to the later bunch as she had a free period coming up and she wished to spend it outside.
So she sat down by the fountain in the middle of the square and whisked her hair over her shoulder as she started watching people. The courtyard was an amazing location for meeting new people. No one was ever there alone and it was one of the busiest places in Hogwarts.
Here Airlia often stayed when she wanted someone to talk to as her kind smile that usually lit up a room drew people in. She was of the easily approachable sort after all. In fact, most Hufflepuffs were.
Her mind began to wander as if oten did and Airlia's smile went from wide and uttely happy to fond and gentle. She thought about her brother and where he might be right now. Last time he'd sent a letter he'd been in South America, helping homeless children on the streets.
While Airlia was proud of him, she was still selfish enough to miss him terribly and wish he'd come home. Or at least to see her once. But alas he couldn't.
And so as her mind danced around something caught her eye, and her thoughts were interrupted.

✮ A Growing Friendship ✮
Charlie's free period was going to be spent productively, he'd decided. His usual habits drew him to stay indoors and eat alone, which was definetly not his favourite thing in the world. He hadn't really found the opportunity to meet new people, so a change of scenery was his best bet.
He was going to make this free period a productive one, and he was going to find someone new to talk to- perhaps a friend in the making. He wasn't quite sure yet- but he wanted to fill his time with conversation more than anything.
He came upon the courtyard, eyes scanning the groups of students. Some were just passing by, some in their groups- He didn't want to barge in on a group, he'd resolved. That would only end in a very awkward encounter.
Eventually, his eyes landed on a quiet-looking blonde girl, sitting neatly by the fountain with her lunch and a small smile on her face.
She seemed lost in thought, but not so much so that Charlie didn't feel approaching her would be good, so he brushed out his robes a little, holding his own small lunch in hand, and approached her with his own smile, examining her as he got closer. She was a Hufflepuff, in the second year like him if he had to assume, and she was sitting immaculately with her gentle expression.
When he approached, her eyes seemed to focus a little, as if he'd rung her attention a little, and he dipped his head a little. "Good afternoon, is that seat taken?" He asked, somewhat awkwardly (really, he'd never been good with first introductions) and pointed to the space next to her on the fountain. "'M Charlie, Charlie Woodward-- was looking for someone to have lunch with?" His accent came off thicker than usual, due to his awkwardness, but he kept his warm, Gryffindor smile.
I bid you adieu, until we meet again of course!

✮ A Growing Friendship ✮
Airlia looked at the boy with sincere interest and her eyes widened slightly to a very innocent expression. The boy was beautiful. Some say that men are to be called handsome, but somehow the word beautiful fit this boy. He was like a Greek statue of an ancient god with his strawberry blonde hair with surfer's curls and green eyes that reminded her of the hills by her favorite tree back at home when the summer was a warm one and nature thrived on sunlight and rain.
She blushed and looked away as she nodded shyly and made a bit more room for the boy to sit down beside her.
He had a nice accent, giving away that he wasn't from around here. Airlia didn't have a clue where people spoke like this boy, but she didn't mind. It was always nice to meet new people and she was glad this boy had chosen her to sit beside.
"I'm Airlia Winter. It's nice to meet you Charlie." She introduced herself when the blush disappeared from her cheeks, leaving only a lovely rosy tint behind. She gently pushed some hair behind her ear when it blocked her vision of the boy. She wanted to look the person she spoke to in the eye as was proper.
Just now she noticed that the boy's cheeks were covered in freckles from exposure to the sun and she couldn't help but think of how different this boy seemed to be from her. Everything about him seemed to scream that he was from somewhere warm and sunny, while her skin gave away how she thrived in the cold by its translucent paleness.

✮ A Growing Friendship ✮
Charlie sat down, his bashful smile still holding true as he readjusted his robes and set his lunch down. "Airlia? That's an interesting name." He repeated her name to commit it to memory, though he was sure it sounded funny with his south-bound accent.
He examined her a little closer, now that he was sitting, imbibing her features. She was pale, nearly translucent-- which was something he wasn't used to from his homeland. Her cheeks were a little flushed as she spoke, though if it was from the biting cold air or something else, he wasn't sure. Her hair was wavy and just as pale, white to the tips and seemed to follow the folds of her robes all the way down to the edge of the fountain. When he fell back to examine her eyes, his bright green was met with a pale blue he found nearly enrapturing, a colour he'd hardly seen on anyone before. She was, he had to admit, extremely pretty-- now that he'd had a moment to look.
He broke eye contact to reach for his lunch, unsure of what to say to her and pulled the sack onto his lap. Inside were a few things he'd grabbed from the Great Hall, but there were also some bags of chips and other snacks from the Muggle World he'd brought along for the year. He wasn't sure if the girl knew much about the muggle world, so he looked up to read her expression as he pulled a bright orange plastic bag out of his lunch sack.
"What are you having for lunch, then?" He asked, trying to find something to strike a conversation.

✮ A Growing Friendship ✮
Airlia smiled at the boy as he pulled out an orange.
Fruits were her favorites. The muggle world of Finland did international trading and they had fruits and vegetables from all over the world in their stores. But those deliveries didn't exactly reach her home town of Taika. And as such, she didn't get fruit from warm countries very often. And Finland was far too cold for growing oranges or pears.
When she first came to Hogwarts she'd fallen in love with all the exotic flavors they offered and it resulted in her dies being consisted of fruits, berries, and nuts.
She'd half by accident became a vegetarian as some students in school called themselves if they denied meat.
"Nothing." Airlia smiled: "I am not hungry at all and honestly I should not be telling you this but..." Airlia leaned in to whisper: "The Hufflepuff common room is close to the kitchen and the house-elves love me. So I can just walk in and get what I want when I get snacky."
Living close to the kitchens was great. Sometimes she went there in the middle of the night if she got hungry. Or made herself traditional Finnish food when she missed home. In that of course, she had to be sneaky since the house-elves didn't want someone to do their jobs for them.

He nodded along as she spoke, peeling the orange and pulling off a few slices before setting it down on the bag. "Whenever you want? Sounds awful like sneaking out of the dorms." He said, amused. "I packed plenty of snacks from my hometown into my trunk for when I get hungry, chips an' convenience store stuff. My ma' even took me to Buc-ee's over the summer so I'd have the good stuff." He held up the obviously muggle bag of crisps and pulled the plastic open. He realised he was throwing around a lot of odd words, and none of them magic, much less European, and he laughed awkwardly.
"Are you a magic-born witch, or were you from a non-magic family originally?" He'd felt a little bad about bringing up so many muggle things without perhaps first asking if she understood. Even if she was from a muggle family, she probably wouldn't have understood the American bits.
His disposition was awkward at best, but sincere to the bone. He wasn't perhaps the best with talking to people, especially after what had happened his first year, but he was determined to try, if he could. Through the silence, he kicked his legs back and fourth, pulling a chip out of the plastic bag he was holding.
I bid you adieu, until we meet again of course!
