Deverick Ewalder Ashriel Duchesne is a slender, fine-boned boy with a pale complexion adding to his ghostlike, old-world appearance. He has lightly tousled dark hair that often falls across his forehead. His eyes are a striking silver-grey, with a sharp, quiet, observant look to them. Eryk is tall for his age, standing at 157 cm. He moves with a practiced grace, rarely fidgeting and trying not to draw attention. There is a subtle tension in the way he holds himself - like he’s always on guard, always holding back, even in calm moments. He has a slightly worn look to him, as though he carries memories and burdens much heavier than his age would suggest. He is frequently seen in immaculate dark tailored robes with silver detail - though that’s not entirely his choice.

Deverick is quiet and watchful, tending to observe rather than participate. He is polite, well-spoken, but distant - always composed and cautious around others. He struggles to express emotion openly and will often retreat inward when overwhelmed, keeping most of his thoughts to himself. While he’s not an unfriendly person, he keeps most people at arm’s length as he doesn’t want them caught up in his family.

Deverick Ewalder Ashriel Duchesne was born on the 21 December into the Duchesne family, an old and powerful pure-blood line with ancestral traditions and magic. He was the only child of Séverin Duchesne and Yelena von Adlerhof, growing up around old magic and expectations, though never meant to inherit its burdens. Instead his cousin, Elias Ambriel Duchesne, was to be raised as the intended heir with all the expectations that came with it. This allowed Deverick to be overlooked by most in his family, giving him the ability to move around more freely.

Everything changed when Deverick turned 10. Elias died suddenly in a magical accident of which Eryk was present, and close enough that guilt has weighed him down ever since no matter if he bore any responsibility. This tragedy shifted the line of succession and Deverick was named the new heir, a role which he neither wanted nor was prepared for. The change came heavy on his shoulders, isolating him further within his own family and also the world.

His mother, a well respected and sought after Seer in her time, had by then begun her decline into madness. Her visions were deteriorating, slipping from clarity to broken fragments and desperate whispers. She spoke of Deverick’s future, convinced he carried a hidden fate long before he was acknowledged as heir. Her protection and foresight contrasted greatly from his father whose discipline, emotional distance, and fascination with the more obscure branches of magic caused a strained relationship from the beginning. This only grew more complicated after Elias’ death, as his expectations only hardened around Eryk, shaping their relationship even less by affection and more by duty and legacy.

Due to these disruptions, Deverick did not start his magical education in the usual way. His first years of proper magical education were spent at home with many different tutors. This allowed his family to monitor him during this time of transition and mourning, as well as keep out unwanted attention. Only later was he sent to Durmstrang Institute, where he prepares for his second year as of 2025. At just 12 years old, the weight of his family’s traditions is heavily upon him, and though he bears it in silence, the ghosts from his past linger in every step he takes forward.

At the age of 4 years old, Deverick was taken to a sacred Duchesne family chamber lined with enchanted mirrors and silver constellations etched into all the surfaces. It was traditionally used to connect the Duchesne children to ancestral magic and their cosmic destinies. Deverick’s presence there was not expected or sanctioned, instead his mother brought him there for reasons unknown to Eryk or his father. Perhaps it was to prepare him or shield him or ensure he was ‘seen’ by ancestral forces. Well, no matter the reason, this was one of his mother’s last sane acts before her decline into madness.

While in the Mirror Room, something startled Deverick and his magic erupted uncontrollably, shattering every mirror in the chamber. The noise could be heard all through the left wing of the house. His father and the elders came rushing in, and when they saw the damage they looked at Eryk in shock. In a panicked daze, Deverick was rushed out of the room in his mother’s arms and no one ever spoke of the event again.

Some said it was a warning. Some brushed it off as a mere coincidence. But whatever it was, it was not foreseen by anyone and that caused a great tension within the family though no one would admit it. The room was never repaired, instead it was closed off and forgotten. However, six years later, after the heir’s death, this incident was reexamined by some as a prophetic moment, one supposed to provide foresight into the tragedy that would come.

This event helped to shape Deverick’s relationship with magic. It instilled a deep sense of fear in him for his capabilities at just 4 years old were remarkable. It also made him feel the need to restrain his magic and learn to control it, for this could happen again and if it did, it could be more disastrous than before.
