Looking like a slow motion shot from an action movie, Alina was, theoretically, easy pickings for the Ravenclaw team. Aislin’s Arresto Momentum had set them up nicely for the slaughter. No one could predict how wrong things went. Perhaps it was a lack of luck or perhaps their overconfidence hindered them, but not one of their spells actually made it across to the decelerated badger.

Nicholas’ spell hadn’t even left his wand as he failed his cast, still disoriented from the wizard crackers. Maisie and Aislin were more successful in that they managed to produced some magic, but the aiming went wrong for both girls. The spirit of Rowena Ravenclaw herself was probably looking down on them, ensuring that both wayward bolts of magic still ended up on the Hufflepuff side of the piste. That was all the luck they were afforded though as Maisie’s jet of flames went far and wide, not even getting close to Minnie who was quick on her feet, and Aislin’s ball of energy missed Costanza as the badger ducked to retrieve her wand.

Things weren’t too much better on the Hufflepuff side. Without Costanza’s cast, it was up to Minnie and Alina to do some damage. Minnie went for what was seemingly her favorite spell, another Incendio Duo. However, what struck Aislin on the shoulder last time went above the head of the same eagle. Alina had a little more success, just managing to clip the side of Aislin’s forehead. The first year would feel a light tickle at her nose, prompting a few sneezes.

Maybe the Hufflepuffs wanted more in the round that the Ravenclaws fumbled, but this was all that they were given - a somewhat successful Sneezing Hex and a beat without someone getting electrocuted by the ominous cloud overhead.

Aislin had said she was okay, but she didn't look it. And she was sneezing now on top of it. Maisie grit her teeth, remembering how unfair all this had felt a year ago. Somehow, now watching the two young ones beside her, that feeling gnawed at her even stronger.

Somewhere in the distance, Percy was celebrating, which gave her some solace. And really, he was right: it had been incredible. That was true.

But it was also short lived as both her and Aislin's spells flew off wide, turning through the air off towards other opponents who clearly saw them coming.

But she couldn't lose focus. So, she shifted her feet and leveled her wand, ready to go.

How did duellists focus while on fire? That was a question Aislin had not yet worked out the answer to. She did try, pointing her nan's old wand at Alina, and this shouldn't be such a hard Flipendo to land when the Hufflepuff was moving so enchantedly slow. But then there was more fire coming her way, and another spell with it, and her shoulder was still on fire, and her focus splintered. She didn't notice where her own spell went, the window between incanting Flipendo and spinning away from more fire too small.

And she'd avoided Minnie's fire! Her relief was distracted by an itch in her nose and hurriedly bringing up her elbow to cover the first of what might be many sneezes, but with the sneeze, the flame on her shoulder went out, so that was something. Now it was just a matter of figuring out how duellists focused while sneezing. She should ask Maisie how she did it, later today, when they weren't in the middle of a duel.

After a relatively rough bout of spell slinging, things seemed to be going just a bit better for both sides. One eagle especially saw great success. Nicholas, from the start of the duel, wasn’t doing so well. Finally, finally, something went right for him as he aimed another Knockback Jinx at Alina. This one was immediately better than his last due to magic actually leaving his wand this time. But that wasn’t all - he managed to hit his target too. Alina felt a strong force slam into her stomach, and then a blindfold wrapped itself poorly around her eyes. The source of the latter was Maisie, who hit her intended target this time. However, the blindfold hadn’t been fasted properly which allowed Alina a tiny sliver of vision.

The Hufflepuffs had targeted Aislin quite strongly in the last bout, so one couldn’t fault the first year for upping her desire to dodge anything oncoming and forgoing her cast in order to do so properly. Unfortunately, the badgers decided to rotate targets and focused their energies on Nicholas instead. Costanza sent a Tarantallegra his way, but the shot went off nowhere close to him. Minnie, with her tried and true Incendio Duo, managed to hit Nicholas with her flames and set his robes alight. It was nothing like the small fire that afflicted Aislin before. This one was a larger inferno, snaking up the length of his body. Of the badgers, only Alina stood unmoving.

“And now Carnell’s taking a break. Get yer head in the game! There’ll be time for that later!”

Twice it happened. No, three times. So many times last year she'd lost count. That's what happened when you were repeatedly outmatched. But this time, it was her blindfold that caught fast around another. No, it wasn't perfectly secure, she could see that, but it was something.

Speaking of which, what was really something was that fact that Nicholas' spell successfully flew off with precision for the first time today. Turning to glad at him, triumphantly, she realized he looked anything but happy in those few seconds. No, he looked—and spoke like—like she had done every time she had been up here last year. "Hey," she addressed him with a gentle nod and a finger pointing at the spell's trail, "you did it."

Now, ideally, he could cast again. She grit her teeth, resisting the urge to comment about that. Or perhaps it was Aislin's sneeze that drew her attention. A cold was never fun, none the less up here. After meeting her glance, Maisie took a deep breath.

There was more work to be done.
