Shae sat at the table and looked around anxiously. She never knew how to start conversations and was always scared to talk to people she didn't know. She hated being alone in large crowds. Even though, she was hungry, her stomach was in knots sitting at this table. She picked at her food, even though it looked and smelled amazing. Shae just couldn't bring herself to eat any of it. Starting to get lost in her thoughts, Shae began to wish she had a friend to talk to so that she didn't feel so awkward sitting alone. Deciding that she didn't have anyone to talk to, she picked up the book she had sat next to her. Shae took a look around the table once more before opening the book and beginning to read. She was able to immerse herself into her book and have something to focus on instead of the room around her. This calmed her down enough so that when she heard her stomach growl, she couldn't help it anymore and began to eat. She smiled to herself once she did, feeling grateful that she didn't let herself miss out on the amazing food Hogwarts had to offer.

Kevin’s smile was still wide as he sat next to the girl he had seen earlier. She had a unique name, and his parents always told him that kindness went a long way when it came down to it. He didn’t really know what he was going to say. Back home, making friends had been easy. Everyone knew everyone essentially. He had gone to a muggle school first and was more culturally aware of how they greeted each other.

He was a pure-blood. There was always customs and certain ways you had to greet people. He didn’t really want to make a fool out of himself but his father, and mother, had told him to be himself. That shouldn’t have been to hard. They were both Ravenclaws for a reason. So perhaps there was something that the two of them could talk about. Maybe he could ask about the book she had been reading, or maybe ask how her food was? No. That probably would sound weird.

Kevin didn’t notice he had been picking at his food, taking small bites while his thoughts occupied his mind. What was the worst that could happen? That was Kevin’s thoughts as he turned to the girl to his left. Kevin cleared his throat and asked the girl, “Hello. I saw you getting sorted earlier. I guess we’re in the same house. However, I am curious. What book are you reading? Is it good?”

Kevin held out his hand, a smile on his face, “I’m Kevin by the way.”

Shae looked up and smiled at Kevin. "Oh hi." She said. She looked at her book. She picked it up andshowed it to him. "Just getting started on History of Magic," she said, shyly. She shrugged. "True Ravenclaw huh?" She asked, setting the book back down and shutting it. "I don't just study, really. I might be a Ravenclaw, but I'm not so bad that I just study constantly. I mean I do fun stuff. I mean, I love reading for the fun of reading. I used to do it all the time. My sister is seven and convinced me that I wouldn't need books because I'd be too busy studying, but I really hate being alone in large crowds, so I needed something to do and, so, here it is." Shae looked down, her face turning red. "Haven't even started classes and I'm already studying History of Magic." She looked back up. "But, really, I do other stuff too." Shae was very clearly nervous, she was shy and babbling was something she did when she got nervous. "Sorry I tend to babble when I get nervous. I'm Shae." She laughed. "So, Kevin, where are you from? I'm from Ireland." Her hands fidgeted on the table as she looked at him.

“Ireland? I’m from Ireland, too!” Kevin’s smile brightened, someone from Ireland. Possibly someone from home, “I grew up just outside of Dublin.”

Kevin certainly didn’t mind Shae’s rambling. If anything, it kind of let him know that people were human. That’s what his mother would say anyway. He still needed to write to her, perhaps he could go to the owlery before classes begin. He was sure she would be proud of his house placement.

“Aye, true Ravenclaw or not, reading is essential. My mother always tells me to read. When I was growing up, at my muggle school, we had a whole class dedicated to reading. It was pretty nice. Muggles and their books. Some of them were actually really good.” Kevin rubbed his head slightly. He had just told someone he had gone to a muggle grade school. That wasn’t bad was it? He didn’t think it was illegal. He did know however that some people still held blood-purity in their mind.

“I hope we can be friends. Do you know what classes you want to take? I am really looking forward to Transfiguration. Or perhaps Potions. My dad makes great pepper ups. Or that’s what my mom says. Says something about her headaches.” Kevin nodded, spooning himself more mashed potatoes onto his plate.

Shae nodded. "I"m from Dublin. I went to a muggle school as well. Basically my parents had decided to live in the muggle world and if we were going to live there, they wanted us to know how to." Shae smiled. "I turned my class pet yellow and cried for hours over it. I thought I was going to get into trouble for using magic in front of muggles. Honestly, it took a week for my father to finally convince me it was an accident and that accidental magic happens and it's totally normal for it to be the first occurrence." She laughed as she thought of the moment. "But yeah, I've always been reading, like I said, I hate being alone in large crowds and being a witch in a muggle school was the most alone I've ever felt." She smiled as she stopped fidgeting and laid her hands flat on the table. Her nerves were starting to calm. "Now I'm in a wizard school and I'm not sure how to act." She smiled. "So, out of curiosity, and please forgive my bluntness, but are you muggle-born? Is that why you went to a muggle school?" She smiled at him. "Sorry I'm still babbling, aren't I?" Her face reddened.

Kevin laughed softly as he watched Shae. He certainly didn't mind her babbling. It was something that really did put him at ease. Kevin's smile was soft, "No, don't worry. I certainly don't mind your bluntness. I am actually not muggle-born. I'm a pure-blood. My father wanted me to experience having a 'normal' childhood. Whatever that means."

"I actually performed accidental magic at my home. I didn't really do anything noticeable at muggle school. I think it was my fear of embarrassing myself, I think that's why I didn't perform magic there." Kevin shuddered a bit before he chuckled.

Kevin didn't think making friends was going to be this easy. He thought that he was going to have to do some big ol' fanfare or something. That wasn't him. He was naturally quiet and just happened to take a chance on the girl he had sat next to. Kevin held out his hand, and he said to her, "Well, Shae. Seeing as we're in the same house. I would love to be your friend. Hopefully, we'll have a class together. Maybe we can even study together."

Shae laughed. "Normal for a wizard is different than normal for a muggle." She shook her head, "But I mean, I guess you were able to get a muggle-normal childhood." She laughed, "But all of these purebloods are going to think something's wrong with you because you went to muggle school." She looked down, "I'm sorry. That probably came off bad." She shook her head and looked back up at him. "I just mean that I know sometimes witches and wizards can be bullies, especially as kids and I feel like because I know muggle stuff they're going to pick on me because it would seem like I'm a muggle-born and I know to some of the more, I don't know I guess you could say uppity purebloods, blood status is important and being muggle-born or half blood seems bad." She blushed. "And I keep babbling." She laughed. "Being friends would be great!" She smiled. "We're going to need them to survive this school." She took his hand and shook it. "Off to a good start I think." She smiled brightly at him. Her eyes brightened and turned into a green color as she smiled. They had changed with her happy mood.

Charles walked into the Great Hall while other 1st years ran past him. He acknowledged all the food and decorations with delight. He heard about this place before but didn't think it was this cool. The teachers were all seated at the table at the front with the headmaster in the middle. He looked pretty old and never skipped a meal. The rest of the teachers looked what he expected, dressed in the midnight black robes and hats. He spotted the Ravenclaw table and made his way to the table. Right before he was about to sit down something pointy ran into his head. "Ow," he said and looked to see what it was. It was a paper airplane flying right next to his head who looked Charles before flying away to the teachers table. "I wonder who's that for." he said. He sat down around some other 1st years and a plate and he looked around at the table. Weird, he thought, as there was nothing on the table. Then all of a sudden a golden plate and goblet appeared in front of him while the table was lined with every food imaginable. He looked around at the other 1st years who was amazed as he was but everybody else wasn't fazed"Let the feast begin," the Headmaster said. And so his first night at Hogwarts began.

Brionna sat at the Ravenclaw table with the other first years. She glanced around nervously as she watched many easily start and hold a conversation. How do they make it look so effortless? she wondered while twisting her finger nervously. It was her first night, and she wanted to make friends, but conversations were never her strong suit, unless explaining the difference in mathematical theoretics. Brionna looked down at her fingers as she attempted to formulate a plan of action. She eyed the lined, wooden table as she mulled over conversation starters.

Hi- no to stereotypical of a greeting, I'm at a table full of intellectuals! I can't have a dimwitted salutation!, the girls brows furrowed as she attempted to come up with better ideas. Brionna, when thinking deeply tends to sport a glare of sorts, which she currently aimed at the table subconsciously.

Pulling out of her thoughts and trying some grip on her surroundings she noted the people surrounding her were in her year. Good start, she thought to herself. She also noted some with books and bags which caused her to become nervous and sent her thoughts hurling. AHHH- Why did my mom tell me we couldn't bring books- Oh that meanie! Brionna was sent into momentary anger at her mother, who with the intent of getting her daughter to socialize instead of read, told her books were not allowed in the opening ceremony. Not only did this leave Brionna without something to do except attempt at friends, but she also was left without her comfort item- a book.

Brionna's finger's itched to feel the pages of one of her novels- just something to distract her from her surroundings. Something to help her calm down and cope with this new environment.

"I'm trying."

@Brionna Wolf

Jackson slid into a seat at the Ravenclaw table, his gray-blue eyes shifting to where all the Slytherins were, longingly. What the hell? He wasn’t smart. Why had the stupid sorting had placed him in the egghead house? Did he seem like the type of person to enjoy nerding over dusty books and sitting locked up in a library, hand cramping and fingers stained blue from writing? He couldn’t even use all those fancy feathered pens he’d seen everyone else with. Somewhat desperately, he looked around the table for someone who seemed as freaked out as he was.

His eyes landed on a girl with bright green eyes and brown hair which fell around her face in elegant curls. She seemed like a nerd, but if he was judging correctly, she was also too awkward to start a conversation. Which was why she was perfect. The boy got up from where he’d originally sat, with an elegant grace, slipping into the seat next to her. “Hey,” he greeted, catching her gaze with a confident grin. “I’m guessing you also have no idea what you’re doing?” As he spoke, his hands reflexively went in his pocket, starting to play around with his fidget cube absent mindedly. The little toys had gone out of style maybe two years before, but Jax found they helped him act like a normal person. Brought his attention back to the ground rather than letting him get off in his head and think of crap.

“I wanna bet,” the boy started, as he grabbed a bun from the table and put it on his plate. It could be noted that save for the piece of bread, he hadn’t touched any other food. “that you’d rather be reading right now, right?” In all honesty, the girl reminded him of his adoptive sister. That chick always had a book in her hand, no matter what time of day you caught her at. He recognized the same lost look on the girl’s face as he’d often seen on his sister’s, when she was confronted with a social situation. “What kind of books do you like? I’m guessing something smart people read. So, like, uhhh, I dunno. Lords of the Rings? iRobot? Help me out here….Also, yeah, I’m going out of order. Hi, the name’s Jax, nice to meet ya.”
