Colin smiled back at him when their eyes met and Kim felt a little better. It seemed as if their friendship remained intact, even after all of this time having been apart. But there was something that bound their original small circle together, something that would be with them always and forever, even if they didn't see eachother that often. Drawn from his thoughts as a familiar scent came into the room, Kim glanced over to see Bailey enter. She looked gaunt and depressed from what she'd gone through over the summer. But it worked for her costume and the event going on right now. Kim smiled at her as she spoke and inclined his head to her.

"You look beautiful, Bailey. Perfect for the event." Kim replied, letting his eyes flicker over her for a few seconds. Kibō hissed his appreciation too from his perch on his shoulder, his gem-like eyes gazing at the female. "I wouldn't be surprised if you won the contest, you chose your attire well." Kim remarked. "I would have worn a new outfit but couldn't really think of what to wear. So I opted for a previous outfit that had gone over well in the past. Remember our bash? It's the same one from back then. I don't expect to win anything for my choice." He said with a shrug, not really caring now.

"Colin's here. If you want to say hi." Kim added, giving Bailey the option of choosing to interact with him or not. It was entirely up to her and her preferences.

A costume contest? Well, that was something new for Anna Blackberry. She was used to dressing up to look pretty and to dance, but wearing costumes wasn't something she was used to. "But then again," she thought while she tried to find that lace among her endless suitcase of accessories, "it can't be too difficult, right? I'm still just putting dresses to go to a party..."
She had seen some posters referring to the costume contest that would happen on the day 31, just before the annual feast. It prompted the readers use their creativity and create a costume to morph into the dead. "Morph into the dead? As in... Look like a dead person?" , she wondered. Well, that was a creepy idea, but there were plenty of ghosts in the school, and since Halloween is associated with death, the theme wasn't that far off. And so, she spent a few days planning how should she dress, if she should use any makeup (although she avoided using any, as she was rather young to worry about makeup), if she should interviewers the ghosts and how could she possibly look like a dead person...
Then, as she drew her possible final look on her sketchbook in the Hufflepuff Common Room at night, she overheard a group of girls talking about what they wanted to wear to look scary. Or to look fun or monstrous. It took a bit of eavesdropping for Anna to understand that, as a matter of fact, "morphing with the dead" was not supposed to be literal; the poster wasn't inducing people to look like corpses, but simply to use a scary costume of their liking. Or... Something along those lines, that's what she managed to understand.
The idea was much less complicated than what she initially thought, but she chose to go with something different than a costume; she was going with a dress. One that looked far less friendly than the ones she was used to wearing, but it was still comfortable in, and it surely fitted the purpose of the gathering. In the evening of the contest, she took her time to put that dress and adjust that hat and its decorations on her voluminous hair; only then she left the Hufflepuff Cellar.

Anna didn't smile, yet felt joyful when she entered the Small Hall, and entered it with a confidence that shone through her eyes and her every movement. As a matter of fact, everything looked beautiful to her. Even her own outfit, which she wore for the first time in her life, felt no stranger than her every other outfit; it didn't make her feel"cute" as she typically enjoyed, but it was elegant, and its dark colors complimented her hair (which she loved oh-so much) greatly. Maybe she should begin to try darker looks every once in a while.
In her time there, spent a long time admiring the carefully arranged candles and pumpkins, something new and curious to someone who's never saw as much as a Halloween party. But then again, not much can be expected from someone who grew up as sheltered as her, who before the first day of buying her materials to hogwarts had not left her house, if not to visit her grandmother.
Webs on each corner of the room. Carved pumpkins spread across the floor, and on the floor people with all kinds of costumes and dresses stood and walked, with the most various looks. Anna held no expectation od winning, but she did look at other people's outfits; she looked intently as some people walked by with beautiful dresses, and others chose a funnier look, and yet others went with the party's initial prompt, picking a dark, frightening or monstrous look. Anna only had the shadow of a smile as she allowed her mind to reach a conclusion to a line of thinking she didn't realize she had began: although she did have her own opinion, good or bad, about the aesthetic of each look and each costume, she wholeheartedly believed that every single person was perfectly dressed for this occasion.

"You look horrible." It was the first words the Gryffindor prefect had said to him since his arrival, warranting an immediate frown to pull at Fire's features as he rolled his eyes. "Please," Fire said pausing his gum chewing, as he looked at her dramatically flipping his sideways blonde wig. "Thanks, but I look immaculate, don't be jealous cause I pull off this outfit better than you..." He said obnoxiously loud as if in character to his costume before lowering his voice for only her to hear. "But no seriously why did we choose this costume, these heels are absolutely killing me." The boy complained, voice coming out a low grumble as he crossed his arms. "We look uncanny with these wigs."

Fire watched intently with a smile as more of the banana's in pajamas reunited and more students started to fill the room, students making costumes and mingling with one another, and costumes sparkling and running across the room. Just as Halloween should be, which suddenly reminded him of a fact about the prefect that her younger brother had repeatedly told him to remember. He turned once more to the girl dressed in denim. "Happy Birthday by the way," He muttered under her breath, just loud enough for her to hear before returning his attention to start taking notes of the costumes around them. As he took notes he also mentally began to rate and rank them in a tier list within his mind to begin thinking who might just end up becoming the winner for the Dress for the Dead birthday party Halloween fiasco event.

But in his studying process, his fault probably he should've known better than bask in his thoughts in a somewhat studious nature, he was ambushed. The great and legendary Fire, caught off guard and attacked successfully. He coughed and sputtered, the boy stumbling forward ungracefully as he fought against the heels to remain on his two feet or more like what felt like stilts buckling beneath him unsteadily, ready to collapse at any given moment. The hand on his back had collided, pushing him forward and leaving a small stinging on his back... and that ear-bleeding voice screaming out to taunt him.

After stumbling forward he stood frozen for a moment as his blood boiled, and he could feel his heart beating in his ears with absolute anger. The only thought he had at the moment was... murder. He stood up and spun around, knowing the voice before he saw the face that was decorated with whiskers, a headband, and his blush-colored haired spiked unnaturally. His face scrunched up somewhat mimicking an angry hamster, and he swung his arms forward attempting to catch Aodhan in a headlock, but his heels made him somewhat impaired in doing so.

"More like Aodhan the annoying!" He said annoyed, gruffily, before standing to hold his arm out in-front of Nova subtly, as in attempt to shield her from the likes of Aodhan. "And not if I can help it Nerd-uto."

Fire then suddenly got an evil devious look on his face replacing his earlier quickening anger, as he crossed his arms with an overconfident snicker, holding up a finger as he wagged it at the other. "You just made a big mistake y'know, you just rasengan'ed the co-host of the contest, what do you think of that?"

COSTUME:

Image posted by the member
Joseph had blinked twice after hearing the task. Dress up? For Halloween?

This had to be a joke.

All his life, Halloween had been a quiet, eerie night of seriousness. When the barrier between the living and the spirit world thinned. He still remembered how the whole village would huddle together around a little camp fire, sharing spooky tales in hushed whispers. How he’d painstakingly etch grotesque faces into his turnip lanterns, hoping it’d be enough to scare off any restless spirits.

Then scramble back into Grandma’s embrace, whimpering in fear.

Now… Halloween had become some massive costume party.

The hall was adorned with spider webs, flickering candles and the occasional pumpkin lantern - glowering at him as though expecting a back scratch. Students milled around the hall, swathed in increasingly absurd outfits. A tall vampire. A pink fairy. Joseph’s jaw slackened as a pumpkin-headed man ambled past him to join the chattering crowd.

Ghosts didn’t giggle back in Arisaig. Fairies didn’t sparkle like a disco ball either. Though maybe… maybe Joseph liked it better this way.

A chuckle slipped him as he spotted his comrades -  a platoon of silly bananas in striped blue and white pajamas, bearing the corniest, most delightful grin ever. Just like him. Weaving his way through the crowd, Joseph stumbled over his own feet, nearly knocking over nearby pumpkin. Woah, he thought, arms flailing to regain his balance. That was a close call. The last thing he wanted was to be trampled into banana puree five seconds into the party.

He hadn’t been planning to join in the festivities, having more important duties for the night: tending to his pet rock, Astra. Poor Astra. It had to be terrifying for her, neglected in her little dollhouse without company. On Halloween night, no less. The thought of some zombie creeping up on his precious rock friend sent a shiver down his spine. If bananas even had spines. He’d be so traumatised if he bit into a vertebrate banana that he’d start a global anti-banana movement.

“Hiiiii,” Joseph said, greeting the other members of his bunch with a shy wave. His eyes flickered from banana to banana to banana, trying to figure out who was who. One would likely be the cheeky redhead girl - founder of the banana army. Another the Ravenclaw girl who’d joined them in stitching their goofy banana outfits. Or the Slytherin boy. Or the bushy haired Gryffindor. Joseph had no way to tell, studying the identical bananas beaming back at him. But that was irrelevant.

Differences didn’t matter that day, BANANA ALL THE WAY!

An overexcited banana from the right suggested they call themselves the banana gang.

“Sounds good,” Joseph said, resisting the urge to explode into giggles. “You know, we should march around the area screaming random things like ‘I LOVE BANANAS’ or ‘BANANAS FOR LIFE’. Anything to spread banana supremacy. If we’re gonna be stupid tonight, might as well be stupid together.”

He wasn’t wrong. There was strength in numbers. Even if they were a little mushier than a regular person that night.

If only he’d brought along a pair of sunglasses. Or a huge colourful banner with bananas taped to it. Anything that’d make him look more like a deranged lunatic - exactly the vibe he was going for.

Though… that wouldn’t be very Halloween-ish, would it?

Joseph wondered how his old friends would react to this madness. Gag. Grimace a little. Probably think the whole lot had been possessed. Too bad they weren’t here. Too bad they couldn’t ever come to Hogwarts.

Too bad they weren’t his friends anymore.

Joseph sighed, shaking the painful thought out of his head. That was unimportant. For now, he and the banana gang had a whole night ahead of them. And something told him it was gonna be spentafricular.

Somewhere in the middle of his incredible, super amazingly replicated Rasengan strike, he heard a familiar voice making some interesting points. First, there was the mention of Novalie. Was she the one stuck in that crazy banana costume? It made way too much sense for anything otherwise; of course Novalie's creativity would shine like that. Aodhan had no doubt she was the ringleader of the cult too, causing him to send her a thumbs-up in approval.

Second, why was he getting called "unwell"? And an idiot? A quick turn of his head revealed his partner-in-crime of the year prior, who also happened to be the host of the hour. Once again, things were making way too much sense. Of course she, of all people, would be such a meanie pants.

"She's right, y'know. I'm unwell. I'm sick. Like, the illest," he instantly quipped, making a point to ignore the secondary insult she packed into her statement. He didn't need to respond to everything, after all. Just the things that he could twist to his own benefit.

As Meiyu took her exit, ungraceful in a way that had Aodhan openly pointing and laughing, it seemed Fire took the opportunity to attack. A revenge strike that would have been devastating... if not for the ridiculous heels on the other's feet. This was seriously turning out to be the funniest Hogwarts event yet. Having dealt with much deadlier things, like bludgers, the youth had no issue with maneuvering himself out of Fire's clutches, cackling incessantly as he did.

His joy didn't stop, not even after getting called "Nerd-uto," which... okay. Okay, that was a good one, and maybe his smile did falter momentarily because wow, that was really good. He had to give Fire props again. This was becoming dangerously common. But even worse...

"You just made a big mistake y'know, you just rasengan'ed the co-host of the contest, what do you think of that?"

Was this check-mate?

"Woah... Hey. Hey, hey, hey. Let's not do anything crazy here, Fire. You wouldn't—I mean. Bro! I'm, like, one of the best looking here! And that rasengan—are you gonna punish me for being in character? C'mon bro," he blabbed off, gesturing to himself wildly in the process. Surely the red-head would give him his fair shot at winning, right? This potential sabotage was outrageous!

Thankfully, another person had found themselves entering the mix. A banana cult member, if the outfit was anything to go by, complimenting Aodhan and asking if he was doing some kind of cosplay. It was just enough flattery to have the boy puffing his chest out and resting his hands on his hips, suddenly feeling vindicated.

"See, Spitfire? I'm iconic," he proudly asserted before resting his gaze on the stranger, his smile bright and jovial. "Yeah! I'm dressed up as Naruto Uzumaki! Do you know the show?"

The room was filling up by the second, the next costume more or less creative than the last. Aiden didn’t pay them much mind either way, but noted them with disinterest. Only one costume was pushing it a bit with his chest all exposed, though he was clearly older than most. “Tada! Do you recognise who I am?” Came a voice to his right. There was no question who that came from. Not looking particularly surprised or startled, Aiden turned in Aleks direction where he was proudly displaying his home-made costume with his arms lifted. He gave him a curt up and down glance, one eyebrow slightly lifted in no clear recognition. The aluminum foil had been turned into something resembling armor. That was a pretty decent job, compared to the melted wax that was sticking to his face in thick clusters, warping his features like he’d been in some freak accident involving fire.

Aiden opened his mouth but was immediately interrupted. “I’m Solomon Lear! And you’re…a Muggle… golfer?” The other Slytherin said before he could make his guess. If Aleks had given him enough time to actually answer the question, he would have answered any random Orc from the movie Lord of the Rings — or a melted doll from a clothing store. Though, he supposed he could see some resemblance to the headmaster, come to think of it. If he squinted his eyes and looked from a far. All in all, it was impressive work with the use of ordinary household items, if it wouldn’t have been stupid to risk his own ass by dressing up as the headmaster himself for Halloween. No one else than his Aleks would have the audacity to pull a stunt like that in broad daylight. Comparing the two of them, at least Aleks costume had some effort put into it.

Instead of an aha moment, Aiden sighed, bordering on exasperated. He gave him a look like he was asking, really? Asking himself if he was trying to get them in detention. It would not have been the first time for Aiden, but he would rather not waste any more of his time polishing silverware, or whatever boring tasks they could come up with that would hopefully ‘teach him a lesson.’ “Almost.” Aiden answered, unbothered by the clueless guess. “I’m a muggle cop. Instead of chasing balls, I chase criminals.” He lifted his baton and waved it lazily in the air, his delivery as flat as his enthusiasm. He shoved it back into his belt, crossing his arms over his chest. “I guess we’re supposed to mingle.”

Bree smooths out her dress-like outfit. As she looks in the mirror, she carefully places the crown on top of her head, crowning herself queen. A evil one. Her surprise when the poster caught the attention was insane. She would've never guessed that Hogwarts would be throwing something for Halloween. Let alone a costume contest. And she would also never have guessed that she would be dressing for it, let alone going.

She would've never been planning to go to this costume thingy. And if she did she wouldn't of had a costume so either way she wouldn't go. But her cousin who becomes over excited for things, told her to go. And when she complained that she didn't have a costume, Hazie made her one. Hazel has forever been improving her skill of making clothes. And now has made it her job to be making Brees costumes for any event. When she got the costume she was surprised at what she saw. Honestly it matched her perfectly. And she loved the design and style it had. The note that was with the outfit was a apology for not finding shoes or anything else. Writing back to her that day she said she had shoes that matched and could find another accessory for it. And Hazel was very very happy to hear about that, especially that she had matching boots for it. The same boots shes pulling on right now.

After finishing getting dressed, she checks in the mirror to make sure everything was right and in place. After she is satisfied with it, she starts to make her way towards the small hall. On the way there everything was very empty. Smiling to herself she starts skipping towards the great hall. Once shes entered, the element of surprise hit her again. There was spider webs, she was very suspicious that they were real and probably were, in the corners of the hall. Carved pumpkins and candles were spread out in the room. Everyone was dressed up, reminding her of home and before Hogwarts. During Halloween, her mother always acted so strangely. She acted like it was the end of the world. Never decorated or anything. Always made sure everything was off the moment trick or treaters came out. Bree never understood why. So she always said yes if her grandma ever asked if she wanted to stay with her during the end of October. During those times she would treasure every moment. The staying up late, the candy, and the dressing up. Pretending to be someone totally made up was amazing. She always loved doing it. And dressing up now reminded her of that.

Clearing her head from those memories to avoid thinking about what's going on with her grandma right now, she starts looking around at the other costumes. Continuing to walk into the crowd, suddenly she steps on part of the dress. Tumbling forward, she manages to catch herself and hold her crown in place. But didn't manage to not bump into someone. Blushing, she lets go of her crown, somehow knocking it out of place as she does so. Putting it back in place she examines the person she ran into. It was another girl. The girl was in a black and red dress. The bottom part was puffed out, as if she were a princess at a ball. The top layer of the bottom had black lace pinned up with bows. Raising her eyes to the girls she realizes that the girl is wearing a bonnet that matches.

"Im so sorry I ran into you! And btw I love your costume! Even though I don't really know what you are supposed to be." Smiling apologetically at the girl, she turns to go somewhere else.

The small hall was bustling as Avery walked in. Her dark costume settling around her elegantly. With a mask covering her face, no one knew who she was. She kept herself quiet. Menacing so her costume would make more sense. As she strutted across the room, she wouldn't be surprised if it fell silent. Dementors weren't exactly a favored being in the wizarding world. It was more that they were feared and known for guarding the infamous Azkaban. A prison where the worst criminals in the wizarding world went.

Now all she needed was her friend, Lindsey, to arrive. They had decided to go together as dementors in celebration of Halloween, but she couldn't see her friend yet. Then again, her friend could have already been in the room. Avery couldn't exactly see very well through her mask. All she could see were out two small holes cut out to show her eyes. Everything else? Well, the rest of her features were covered by the mask. Leaving only her striking hazel green eyes visible. Only her closest friends would probably recognize her.

Avery couldn't remember the last time she'd dressed up for Halloween. If she had ever dressed up. Her parents had always taken her to different pureblood events those nights of the past when she should have been dressing up with friends and having fun like her muggle friend had described. She didn't know much, but she did know from what her muggle friend had told her that the candy that came from Halloween was delicious. Avery had never had the chance to try any before her friend died.

Avery was glad no one could recognize her. Just thinking about her muggle friend losing her life at the young age of eight still hurt her deeper than she wanted to admit out loud. There had been so many things that Avery wanted to tell her friend now. So many moments she wished she could have relieved or even enjoyed more than she had. It was that memory alone that reminded Avery of how short life really was, and how she needed to be there for people because she never knew when she would lose that person.

Maybe that was why she was doing this. Or maybe there was something else. Something that ran deeper than she could have ever imagined. Either way, Avery knew that she was going to do this. She had to get her head out of the clouds and enjoy something for once instead of staying secluded. After the news of her grandfather falling ill again, Avery hadn't told anyone. She had kept it to herself. Believing that no one deserved to bear her problems when they had their own to deal with.

Avery had no words for that issue. No idea of what she was supposed to do or how she was supposed to react. All she really could do was hope and pray that her grandfather would hold on a little longer so she could at least say goodbye. Though she wasn't ready to say goodbye. She wanted him to be there for her and Dylan's graduations. He hadn't gotten to wish them off to school together since they had all been separated, so he had to make it at least to graduation.

Avery was so deep in her own thoughts that she hadn't even realized Lindsey was there. "Oh. Hi Lindsey. Sorry I didn't see you. Anyway. Nice costume! You ready to do this?" Avery asked with a smile behind her mask that no one could see unless they looked at her eyes.

A lovely evening it was. Though Anna hadn't been doing much, looking at other people's chosen outfits and feeling like a bright star in her own dress was enough to keep the little Blackberry there. As she walked around, hearing the sound of her shoes on the floor, she noticed a silhouette moving towards her, but she didn't have time to look up before the owner of said silhouette bumped on her, throwing her off balance for a second; and then Anna looked up. It was another girl, with a very particular dress, that somewhat resembled a dark and somber queen who had just walked out of her chambers. That girl wore a crown that only added to that aesthetic; she was the dark queen of this costume contest.
But even that was only a dress-up. The brown-haired girl had a gentle air, and apologized for having ran into Anna, and even complimented her dress! The shorter girl couldn't help but flash a proud and bright smile. She knew she looked pretty, but hearing that just made her feel even more charming, and she held her skirt gently, and began speaking as the other girl had, very clearly and unmistakably, turned around to leave.
"Thank you! You look beautiful, too. I'm not dressing up as anything in particular though, I'm just here to feel pretty!"

The candlelight flickered softly against the polished floors of the Small Hall as Reyna stepped through its archway, the faint echo of her heels the only sound that dared to disturb the stillness. Reyna wasn't quite early, but she wasn't late either. She had thought of waiting for Linda, who would arrive in a little bit, but the thought of waiting alone in her dorm had felt heavier than walking into a half-empty room. At least here, she could pretend to think for a moment that she wasn't merely attempting to fill in silence that had become too loud to bear.
Her costume rustled softly as she moved, Her goddess costume, which she had planned to match with Linda was a flowing white gown that faded into a soft sky-blue at the hem, edged with golden trim that gleamed under candlelight. The draped sleeves fell gently from her arms, catching the air like wings as she walked.
Her golden laurel headpiece rested delicately upon her hair, while layers of gold jewelry shimmered at her wrists and collarbone. She had done a gold and blue eyeshadow, simply because she had nothing better to do. Deep blues blended with radiant gold that glinted with every blink. Her nails were painted in shimmering aqua and gold. One might call it an ethereal, godly costume.
Except Reyna didn't feel very godlike on the inside.
She had spent most of the afternoon convincing herself to come. Her friends had told her she would be all right, all right to go out, all right to meet people, all right to not think so much. They had done it out of niceness. And so she had promised, promised to come here with Linda, to wear some makeup, to smile, to try. She even was able to manage a faint smile as she gazed about the hall, though it didn't quite reach her eyes.
The hall was decorated beautifully. Carved pumpkins shone in all directions, and spiderwebs of silver sparkled like frost in the candlelight. Candles hovered in mid-air, their wax melting never to fall. The room was warm and soothing, filled with the smell of autumn and something sugary sweet, perhaps caramel pastries.
Reyna traced her hand along one of the carved pumpkins as she passed by, smiling nostalgically. Laughter was ringing softly in the hallway beyond.
She hadn't wanted to be here tonight, not that much. Not when her chest ached still from the loss her grandfather's death had left her with. It had been three months since his funeral and yet she still couldn't get over it. Everyone else had moved on, why was she still stuck in the past? Sometimes she still caught herself searching for an owl from him, or a letter in his tidy, curling handwriting. He'd always told her stories about gods and stars when she was a child, and healing magic. But now they were just memories of the past.
Maybe that was why she'd worn the goddess costume tonight. Maybe it wasn't just for the contest or Linda. Maybe it was a quiet way of having a piece of him with her, to be the stories he used to tell her. That made her smile. A true genuine smile.
She walked toward one of the tables and took a seat near the edge, smoothing the hem of her gown over her knees. The candle at the center flickered gently as she waited for Linda. You’re here, she told herself. That’s enough.
As students filed into the room, Reyna glanced over her shoulder toward the doorway, half expecting to see Linda. Not yet. That was okay. She was usually late herself anyway. Except for today.
And that was what mattered. The fact that she was here. The fact that she wasn't crying in her room anymore. She had even attending the Autumn Ball. Memories of that lingered in her head. Hans. She mentally slapped herself. She could not think of him. She was here with Linda. Hans was just a friend. Just a friend. And she would repeat those words until she found Linda.
