Backstory

Leo ‍was a young boy from Godric’s Hollow, a magical and cozy village where wizards and witches lived together in harmony. The place was magic-filled yet safe which made it very different from the cities he had only heard of. Magic was everywhere—there were small charms sparkling in windows, enchanted lanterns flickering along the cobbled streets, and mysterious objects floating lazily in the air. Leo didn’t know any spells, but he really liked to see magic happening around him.

Although the village looked quite peaceful, the streets were still bustling with the villagers’ activities. Wizards and witches were carrying potion ingredients, dusty spellbooks, and strange magical trinkets that even Leo couldn’t figure out the use of. He wanted to see and hear everything. Once in a while, the friends of his father—magical inventors—allowed him to look in their workshops where self-writing quills wrote on parchments, cloaks changed colors by one wave of magic, and small enchanted hats gave cool air to hot heads. Leo was so eager to trying doing these things with him.

His biggest amazement was with the small magical devices that were lying everywhere unattended. Little brooms flew over the streets as if they were doing their own errands, dust disappeared from the stone paths, and sneezewort sprites—mischievous light creatures—were running among the villagers making them laugh and sneeze. The smells of potions, baked goods, and parchment were coming together nicely in the air, and at the same time, there was the occasional pop! of a spell that was not successful.

To Leo, walking around Godric’s Hollow was similar to attending a magical concert. Lamps were twinkling with very far away charms, smooth and soft tunes were coming from enchanted instruments placed outside houses, and jars of potion ingredients were rattling gently on shelves. He was very keen on noticing small details – wands made with twisting vines, little charms glittering in the sun, runes that he could not yet decipher.

Leo was not a mere spectator. He was the leader of a small group of friends that were just as crazy about magic as him. As none of them were able to do real spells, they would spend their time coming up with new ideas for tricks, preparing “pretend” potions out of anything they could find, and starting small magical incidents which would make them laugh so hard that tears would come to their eyes.

Leo’s dreams were big as a result of being brought up in a magic-filled Godric’s Hollow. He made a plan to move out of the village when he finally would be able to perform real spells with his own wand-first to be able to visit the other parts of the wizard world and then to discover all its secrets.

First Instance of Magic

Leo, ‍till this day, holds the memory very fresh in his mind of the very first moment he realized he's capable of magic. He was only four years old, sitting on a very high stool in his mum's potion-loaded kitchen in Godric's Hollow. The whole house was dead quiet, and the only thing you could hear was the bubbling sound of a cauldron sitting in a corner, releasing rainbow-colored smoke clouds that mixed and twisted with each other to form ghost-like figures. To Leo, it was the most fantastic thing he had ever looked at.

Among other things, the counter had a tiny glass bottle loaded with something silver and shiny—powdered moonstone. It glittered as bright as if it was a bunch of stars caught in one bottle. Leo found it to be the most beautiful thing not only in the kitchen but in the whole world. He came forward, but his hand was shaking so much because he knew his mom wouldn't allow it if she saw that he was touching her ingredients. However, it was so nice that he couldn't resist getting hold of it.

After scooping it up, a moment with his heart racing, he only looked at the vial. Then—in an attempt to imitate how he saw his mom sprinkling the ingredients—he over-turned the bottle a bit too much. The powder that was on the counter got spilled and instead of dust rising from it began to shine. There were small spheres of light going up to the sky, they were coming, they were revolving, and it seemed that they were living beings.

At this point, Leo was not able to move. The opening of his mouth and the enlargement of his eyes came to him as a surprise. The shining balls that were spinning around the counter, evading Leo when he tried to grab them, as though they were playing with him. Some of them even gently touched his fingers making the warm and exciting light tingle on his skin. He felt it in his chest - an odd, exhilarating rush, a mixture of wonder, excitement, and disbelief. His heart grew big, and for the very first time, he really felt the sense of... power.

His mum came back from wherever she was, just in time, to witness the whole incident. Seeing it, she did not scold him but instead smiled and chuckled. "Well," she said, "it appears that the magic came with you, son. You just had to want it."

Leo wasn't able to utter a single word. What he did was just to look at her and then back at the lights that were still moving in the air. That was the point of time when everything became different for him. Magic stopped being just something that the grown-ups had—it was his, too. A thing that was real. A thing that was alive. A thing that he could touch. A thing that would make his heart flutter and bring his creativity to such heights as he hadn't known‌‍ ‍‌before.
