Hieroglyphs, Homework, and Doodles: A Study Session

Paul Starlight was hunched over his parchment, his quill scratching furiously as he tried to memorize the differences between Egyptian hieroglyphs and Mesopotamian cuneiform. ‘So… a bird means ‘sky’… or ‘danger’… or ‘Tuesday’?’ he muttered to himself, absentmindedly adding a tiny doodle of a pharaoh wearing a chef’s hat in the margin. His notes were already a chaotic mix of facts, scribbles, and ink blots proof of his ‘very serious’ study session.

‘Mr. Starlight,’ Professor Break’s voice cut through his thoughts, ‘the correct interpretation of the Rosetta Stone is—’
‘Yeah, yeah, officially,’ Paul whispered, quickly flipping his parchment to hide the doodle. His quill slipped again, sending a fresh ink splatter across his notes. ‘…I’ll clean that up later,’ he sighed, rubbing his temples. Maybe he should’ve paid more attention to the lesson instead of daydreaming about the stars.

He glanced at the board, where the key differences between ancient Chinese and Egyptian writing systems were listed. ‘Okay, Paul,’ he muttered, ‘focus. No more goblin rebellions in your notes.’ He took a deep breath and tried to concentrate, only to get distracted by the way the ink had formed a shape that looked suspiciously like a constellation. ‘…I’ll take that as a sign,’ he thought, grinning.
