Knocked of Piste
It's been a long time for Zach to be in the Duelling Club again. He used to visit the place a lot to duel, to have fun. But then responsibilities came, making him leave the club. But here he was now, standing in the room, looking at every piste. If you wondered why Zach was there to duel again, the answer was no. He was there to look at his potential clients.
The enchanted backpack was hanging on his shoulder, full of potions and medical equipment that he brought from home. More precisely, he stole those items from the first aid kit in his kitchen at home. The boy sat in the corner of the room, not far from an unused piste. The clothes he used blended well with the wall and the shadow.
Then he saw someone familiar entering the room. He was about to approach her until she was interacting with another person whom he didn't know. Suspicious with the situation, Zach decided to stay in his place, to observe them. Questions popped up in his head. Is Raizel going to be back to duel again? Who is that new person? Why is Raizel interacting with her? Zach tried so hard to observe them and wished to be able to eavesdrop their conversation. He was ready with his wand in case the new person was evil.

❂《 ⌜ October 24, 2025 ▎ ---- ⌟▛▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔Countless times had this place made Raizel feel unwelcome. It made sure to let her know every now and then that she didn't belong in it, standing on the piste to bring home glory to her house, to herself, in the art of duelling. For a sport that she had loved in hopes of helping her reach her goal… it never loved her back, leading to a disconnect to it. She quit but she couldn't let go so she became a captain but after the talk she had with Dealla Prince, it got her thinking that perhaps it was time to let go… completely.
She was right, it didn't have to be dueling but she had nothing else she could use as a way to show what she could do. Broom Racing, a sport that she had learned to love, had been nothing but awful for her as well with three consecutive loses. She didn't know what to choose when both choices were just dead ends for her, unable to satisfy her cravings for strength since they made her feel further behind. It was why she clung into it as if her life depended on it. For her, it was the only place she could prove her worth, a necessity in order to reach what her family could. She didn't know any path, that was the only one. All thanks to Dee though, she had discovered that she could stray away from that path and could still end up on the same destination as her family. Not only that though, she had discovered something else that could satisfy that hunger of hers although it was not a method that most would approve of.
That didn't matter. Training almost everyday wasn't doing it. Who could blame her for taking a different route when ordinary means weren't working. It promised power and that's what she wanted. A new way to gain what she seeks and a new way for her to show it. She was hoping that this time will yield to the results that she had been longing for. There was one thing that she must conquer first and that's getting along with her new wand. A weird one, that's what it was and no, it wasn't because of its slightly pinkish appearance and its strange looking handle but rather because of how it even decided to choose her as its wielder. The moment she held it, it felt strangely right in her hands but at the same time, so wrong.
It was like it spoke to her, telling her that it'll help her reach what her previous wand failed to support her with. It believed in her more than she could believe in herself. It promised to lend her its strength to make her more powerful. It felt her desires and it was responding to them, even if the process was shady. What felt wrong was why it was willing to do that when she was a weakling? It was a question that she still asked up to now and one that she still had no answer to. She still decided to keep it, its offer being too good to decline. That was why she had to learn how to use it sooner or later. She wanted to see what it could do, no, what they could do together.
A few practices once a day was good enough for her, training with a dummy. That was what she had intended to do today when she walked through those doors. Her thoughts were all over the place, thinking of what she could try to master now that she had gotten hold of new spells. It was only when she heard someone speak, making her look in their direction to see who it was. Who? That was her first question, making her stare, no, glare at her. She didn't mean to, not this time anyway. It was just, that had become her neutral expression considering what she was going through, with all those thoughts in her mind and the troubles that she had to deal with. She didn't even realize she walked up to this girl who was probably terrified by now. Usually, she didn't care. She had preferred it that way, for people to never approach her, to drive most of them away. This time though, she felt bad and she couldn't even soften her gaze.
Verity Engels, Hufflepuff duellist and co-captain, says. Oh, that girl. Yeah, she remembers now… maybe. “Raizel Voltrouz.” She returned the introduction, a simple one. There was nothing worth noting after all. Her next words made the Gryffindor raise an eyebrow. “You… want to be my duelling partner?” Huh, did she ask that? Oh, was she trying to do what she used to do before? Duelling higher years was a good way to gain duelling experience and Verity was a first year so she was probably trying to get ahead of her peers in that department. “Alright, sure.” She didn't think too much about it, not even questioning why the girl looked a bit terrified but figured it was just her imagination. There was no way she was scared when she literally asked her to practice with her. Maybe she could make this a bit different than before too to help her out.
“Let's give it a twist though. If you have potions, feel free to use them.” Raizel said as she took her place on the piste. In real life duels where you have to chase around dark wizards, learning to use potions on the spot would help them. She still wonders why duelling won't allow its usage though.

The Ravenclaw student still sat in the corner, trying to hear anything he could heard between the two girls. Gasp was unconsciously released once he heard that the new girl asked Raizel to duel. Is she for real? Zach could just mumble, looking at them both in disbelief. He thought that the girl was too brave to ask Raizel for a duel.
Once they were on the piste, they started from the centre of the board. The new girl cast a classic duelling spell that first year's familiar, Incendio, or what we often know as Fire-Making spell. With a precise wand movement and clear pronunciation, the girl cast the spell, making her wand emit the dancing flame towards Raizel. The flame was strong enough to burn the outfit of the Gryffindor girl.
At the same time, Raizel cast the opposite spell of the new girl, Glacius or Freezing Spell. She didn't miss the precision of wand movement and spell incantation, making her spell hit the new girl successfully. The temperature around her was decreasing to the point that it could freeze something if it wasn't nullified quickly. The chill air also surprised the new girl's muscles which could change her precision and decrease her movement.
It was a tense start, between fire and ice, between a lioness and a sow. Zach wondered who the new girl was since she did pretty good at the start.

❂《 ⌜ October 24, 2025 ▎ ---- ⌟▛▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔An extra rule to spice things up. The question now would be if she would be able to utilize it and handle it considering how rusty she had become in duelling. A good challenge but against a first year? Would she even consider it a challenge? No, this first year could beat her up, right here, right now. Not to mention, she was out of shape and unfamiliar with her wand as well. Verity might as well be better than her. It would do her no good if she starts underestimating her now.
Once the Hufflepuff Duelling Co-captain was ready and took her place, the duel started almost immediately. “Glacius!” She gritted her teeth. While the casting of the spell was good enough to conjure the freezing blast, the strength was something she was not used to. Thunderbird Tail Feather shouldn’t be that different from a Dragon’s Heartstring yet it felt harder to control which almost led to her missing her target. It’s gonna take a while to master this wand, to make it a part of her daily life and for it to become a true partner. Being accepted by it was only the first step.
That wasn’t the only problem she was facing. Her reaction time had gotten quite slower, that or Verity just had an almost perfect aim. Either way, it was something that she had to work on as well.

The Blonde Girl didn't freeze upon being frozen by the Glacius that had been thrown by Raizel. She threw another spell, something that Zach himself had experienced before: Bullarum Immortalem, or what they usually knew as Bubble-Producing Charm. She seemed good at casting the spell but her opponent was Raizel. Not only that, the air around her was chilling that perhaps could make her spellcasting more difficult. The spell was successful but it didn't go for the full effect. The bubble didn't really obstruct Raizel's movement that much.
On the other side, Raizel seemed not to be taking this duel lightly. After making her opponent cold, she threw a spell that has a 180-degree effect: Incendio Maxima. Fire, fire, and bigger fire! She took her opponent seriously. The air around The Blonde Girl became warmer. But the sudden temperature changes didn't mean good for her situation. The damage from the spell could be more painful. Not only that, her clothes were also caught by the fire. She has been pushed for a bit, adding more distance between the two witches.
Zach still observed the duel in silence. He kept note of the progress and was ready with his supply in case it would be needed.

❂《 ⌜ October 24, 2025 ▎ ---- ⌟▛▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔Yup, she was definitely out of shape. That bubble producing charm should’ve been so easy to avoid but her body just won’t listen, it just won’t move to how she wanted it to be. Just as always. Even if she tries to whip herself back into shape, she would fail to show it once it mattered. Still, at least the spell was a lot weaker than she expected it to be all thanks to her managing to avoid most of it.
Now, here comes the retaliation. Call her cruel for freezing this first year first and then shooting out an Incendio Duo. At least she doesn’t have to deal with the cold when the spell hits Verity. Then again, having your clothes set on fire might be worse than feeling a little bit of coldness. She would know. While she doesn’t have that much experience when it came to the freezing spell, she had found herself set on fire while she was still duelling. The burnt clothes, the stinging pain from the heat of the flames.
She should apologize after this… maybe even give her a free burn healing paste. Surely she has some to spare for Verity. It’s the least she could do for her unless Raizel was the one ending up needing some healing after this. Physical and magical injuries were fine but her pride wouldn’t let her have some peace if she ended up losing here.

Spectacting a duel was always a fun thing to do. Doing them was a separate thing. It had its ups and downs. The boy still sits a bit far from the piste. His eyes still looked at how the duel went between the two girls. Even though he really wanted a hands-on experience in handling a patient without supervision, seeing his friend, Raizel, hurt would surely break his heart.
The blonde went with a spell that he learnt in in second-year. It surely surprised him. The Tickling Charm, Rictusempra, was cast from the tip of her wand, emitting a jet of silver light towards the Lioness. If only the bubble weren't disturbing her, she would be able to evade it. But that day wasn't really hers. The spell hit her successfully, tickling the target. The spells seem pretty strong. Zach just hoped Raizel could still handle the tickle.
He also had a respect for the blond to successfully pull the spell. Perhaps she was like him and Raizel, a prodigy in Charms. But Zach has left the title aside, chasing the branch of magic that was enticing him more.
While the blonde girl cast the Tickling Charm, Raizel was also prepared for another thing. She didn't stay still. She was a fighter, as Zach always knew. She cast a spell that they learnt in their third year, Full Body-Bind Curse. Smart move, Zach could say. Casting the spell they had properly learnt was wiser. Know your weapon before you use it, was the thing he always remembered from his uncle. The spell hit the younger girl successfully. From her look, Zach judged that the spell was really strong, strong enough to make her have a very hard time moving. Poor girl. Physical strength was never any duelist's power. Perhaps only a miracle could free her from the curse, unless there's a random prince coming out of nowhere and releasing her from the curse, like the fairy tale that was often told to the kids before they fell asleep.
Both girls were pushed back, and both were at the same distance from the middle of the piste. The battle became more exciting, making the boy seem to forget his intention here. He wondered about the end result of the duel.
