Hufflepuff vs Ravenclaw: Match 7

There was something special about the start of a duel, when everyone's moves were perfectly scripted (or Aislin's were, anyway, maybe some teams didn't precisely plan their openers?) and the only variation came down to speed and accuracy. The rest of the duel was probably much more interesting, the stringing together of reactions based on contingencies they'd discussed before and pure instinct, but she did like this moment, the straight comparison of their strategy, listening for Pyxis' word and then pointing her wand, rather than at any Hufflepuff, at the ceiling.
The Weather-modifying Charm was a second year spell, so she hadn't practiced it in a class, but Aislin had performed that same swirling wand motion plenty of times over the past few weeks. It was her opening move, she wanted to get it right, and there was a brief moment where her face lit up seeing the dark clouds form, dripping rain across the stage and buzzing with static energy. She then attempted to school her expression and her focus, since spells could be coming her way (there weren't, yet, which made things easier), but the sharp crack of a mini lightning bolt right onto Alina and the accompanying little boom brought the grin right back. She hadn't expected her storm to do anything that soon, but it had, and it really was quite a pretty opener.

Ow... Dang Alina shook out her limbs. "Ow." She mumbles. She could smell the burn of hair and she was soaked. You know... I used to wonder how much this was going to hurt. She flexes her hands because she doesn't really know what else to do. She looks up. Gosh, there can are 9 more rounds of this. Alina winces as she twirls her wand around in her hand. Here comes round 2.

Maybe a third time would be the charm for Gemmell seeing as only two of the badgers managed to do something. Newbie Alina was adept at dodging spells, not lightning strikes. But Minnie hadn't moved. Costanza thought she was lucky to not be targeted, but the Hufflepuffs could have really used another spell flying across the piste.Even worse, Costanza's own spell backfired, forcing her to dance in a moment similar to a summer camp experience some time ago. She didn't mind the feeling of being controlled. It definitely beat not knowing what to do with her body when she wore that figurative and seemingly unbreakable mask of hers. But this was probably the worst moment for it to happen as she would use less of her own ability to avoid what was coming her way.
At least, she could feel the spell waning already. It wouldn't last long, and she hoped that her intuition would continue to guide her like it did when it came to Maisie's attack. She'd swiftly sidestepped it on a feeling. As opposed to most things, this seer business was becoming harder and harder to get used to.

At the sight of Costanza’s majestic stepdance, it seemed that others wanted to try their hand at sending their opponents hopping across the piste. Alina went after Maisie, and Nicholas took his shot at Alina. Both casts were absolutely superb, especially Nicholas’ whose looked incredibly forceful. Alas, their focus on concentration couldn’t pay off as both spells missed their marks.
Costanza and Maisie were still locked in battle, though this time, the badger extended her reach to the rest of the Ravenclaw team. Her conjured crackers missed Maisie, and Aislin was far enough away, but Nicholas felt the exploding poppers on his arm and side of his leg. He was going to be feeling the aftereffects for a while. Despite Costanza’s premonitionary skills getting the best of Maisie last time, there was no stopping the eagle this time. Her Disarming Charm struck the badger on her wand hand, sending Costanza’s wand toppling to the piste a short distance away.
Aislin continued to take wins for her team, striking Alina with a Slowing Charm. The badger’s movements suddenly decelerated. She could try and force herself to dodge spells, but would find herself inhibited by the constraints of the spell. Aislin’s rain cloud also had something to say, rumbling loudly before striking another badger. This time it was Minnie, who had suddenly become active after blanking a few seconds ago. Despite the scent of more singed hair, Minnie managed to hit Aislin with a fire spell on the tip of her shoulder. The fabric there caught fire, but the flames were seemingly not at their full power.

Hufflepuff vs Ravenclaw: Match 7

"Nice moves, Jewelweed!" came the cheer from from the crowd as Maisie looked over to find Robin, who would be competing her own duel for the first time later in the day, paying close attention. Unlike the last few times she'd been up here, it seemed she had a cheering section and that filled her with a new energy.
Maybe this time she wasn't alone.
She was quick to move out of the way of Costanza's spell—something she did not immediately recognize—but Nicholas was not so lucky. Meanwhile Aislin got set on fire, something unfortunately all too common on the piste. "Are you two okay?" she whispered to them both, knowing getting hit for the first time was not fun. Hopefully, they'd remember what she'd said in the beginning: don't give up.
And yet...
“Go Maisie! You’ve got this!”
Percival's lighthearted cheer—one of many ways he'd shown up for her—reminded her that just because Costanza had side stepped one spell—the timing still seemed strange—didn't mean she might do so again. And frankly, she was getting tired of her and her jeering match after match. But there was one thing—no matter how else the rest of this whole thing went, no matter if Costanza sent her to the hospital wing again, no matter if she never stepped up here again (because she did, in fact, suck at this sport)—that Costanza could never take away from her if she pulled it off, the most wounding thing one witch could do to another: take her wand.
And take her wand she did.

Very quickly, it was harder to keep track of everything. It was a little like chess combat in that way, though not quite so many moving parts, bright and loud and chaotic. The crackers from Costanza's wand were the real cause of most of this, popping around Ravenclaw's end of the stage, and Aislin managed to avoid the fringes of the spell that came close to her, then realized Minnie had sent a burst of fire at her, too, and how did anyone ever manage to dodge multiple spells at once? Maybe it just took practice, because Maisie was pulling it off.
In between zipping spells and fire catching on her shoulder, she managed to incant a Slowing Charm at Alina. She'd had too much luck evading Nicholas' spells, in Aislin's opinion, and moving as though through molasses should change that. Her beautiful storm cloud struck yet again, hyperactive compared to the ones she'd summoned in practice, but this time she was a little too preoccupied to appreciate it. "I'm okay?" she answered Maisie's check-in, but she was still eyeing the flames uncertainly. They didn't hurt that much worse than a skinned knee, but it was a different sort of pain. Another question: how did duellists possibly focus on anything in front of them while on fire?

You know, I'm starting to think I've unintentionally gained some sort of bad omen. Alina can't help the thought as the slowness spell hit her. So much for being able to avoid things. She had missed her own spell, but not by much. That in and of itself wasn't terrible. But, as her brother might say: "Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades".

The Cracker Jinx was a gamble, and the payoff was small. Costanza hoped her teammates had done better and she breathed a sigh of relief when she saw fire catch on a bird's shoulder. At least Minnie was having a good turn. Then lightning struck and the badger wondered if it was a mistake to not cast a cloud of her own. But the blasted things had a mind of their own and rarely struck twice in a row like that. She wished her foresight could've helped her out with that one.───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
