It had been a week since Rosaline went to Hogwarts. There hadn’t been anything really challenging for her, but there was so much homework to do. She was almost overwhelmed by it. She decided she should do those essays on the day they were assigned. Never put off until tomorrow what you can do today. Her morale was high at that moment.

After a series of classes that day, Rosaline received more homework, and she was exhausted by the thought of finishing it. Carrying a heavy schoolbag and a tired body, she went to the library. The library wasn’t very crowded since it wasn’t exam season yet. She picked a seat next to the window where she could enjoy the sunlight while working on her essays and reports. When she put her schoolbag on the chair next to her, she looked around, felt very comfortable with all the books there. Sitting down on the chair, she took out her textbooks, parchment, quill, and ink. She put them in a neat order on the table. Charms, History of Magic… Hmmm, what should I write first? Rosaline’s brows knitted together. She leaned her chin on her hand, seeming very focused on deciding what she should do. In the end, she picked up A History of Magic. She always liked to read history stories, no matter whether it was the history of Muggles or the history of Magic. In her past reading experience, she found out that they weren’t two parallel lines, such as during the Witch Hunts. That might have been amusing to some real witches, but not fun when it came to innocent Muggle women. Her mind drifted too far away. She slightly shook her head and returned to her focus.

Reading through her homework requirements, she noticed she might need to borrow some books for supplementary reading. She got up from her seat. The chair scraped softly against the carpet. She headed to the bookshelves. There were so many categories of books, almost making her dizzy, yet also excited. How can I read through all these books? How much time would it take to finish them all? As she was thinking, she made her way to the books she needed. She tiptoed to reach for the books on the upper shelf. Then she walked back to her seat. She needed to read these extra history books to finish her report. She noticed there was another boy sitting near her. Hoping he was a quiet one who could let Rosaline write her homework in peace, she continued her reading.

God, libraries were so boring. Silas wasn’t sure why he had even bothered entering the room. He was still trying to explore areas of the school that he hadn’t seen yet, and that had somehow landed him here. It had looked vaguely interesting at first, given its size and the open door, but it was actually just for a whole lot of books — what could be so great about that? Well, now that he was here, he might as well find something to do… He sat in a random chair and grabbed the nearest book, beginning to tear the pages out, which made a loud ripping noise. He let the pages flutter to the floor, scattering around him in a vague circle.

Glancing around, he saw a girl nearby with a big pile of neatly ordered books next to her. Seemingly, she was focused on her reading — too focused. His head tilted slightly to one side. With the next small handful of pages, instead of dropping them, Silas scrunched them into a ball and tossed it in her direction, looking at the stack of books with distaste. “The fuck d’ya need all those fer? It’s barely week two, no shot ya ‘ave tha’ much homework.” Why did he care, one might ask? Truthfully, he didn’t — not in the slightest. He just saw an easy opportunity to poke at someone and disrupt them, so he took it. It was as simple as that.

Rosaline’s first reaction was pure bewilderment. What was that boy doing? She only heard the sounds he made at first — loud and harsh. Then came the noise of tearing paper. She could not believe her ears. This was, after all, the library. Her brows furrowed. Something ignited within her, perhaps anger and annoyance. Rosaline wasn’t the type of child who would boss others around or tell them what to do; she wasn’t like that at all. But she loved books and the library; she couldn’t stand that someone had just torn apart these books.

She looked up from her books, eyes narrow, glaring at the source of the noise. Just as she opened her mouth to speak, the boy tilted his head and flicked a paper ball her way with a sneer. She watched it fall as though in slow motion, the ball landing on her neatly organized note. The boy spoke first, his tone indifferent yet mocking as he asked how she could already have so much homework at the start of term. Her cheeks flushed crimson with fury. She could tell he wasn’t genuinely concerned about the matter, perhaps merely finding her existence irritating.

Such an encounter was unimaginable for her. She sat frozen for a few seconds, but quickly regained her composure. Then she set down her pen calmly, pushed back her chair, rose to her feet, and walked over to the boy’s seat. Crossing her arms, she met his gaze directly and said in a controlled tone, “I’d rather know what on earth you’re up to.”

He watched the girl’s reactions to his behaviour with mild, detached interest reminiscent of a scientist examining a specimen through a microscope. He was poking her just to watch her squirm. And squirm she did — glaring at him through narrowed eyes, her cheeks flushing red as he spoke. Each reaction fed him, sparking tiny amounts of joy even as she tried to control herself and make her expression more neutral. He smirked, and then raised his eyebrows in mock innocence as she approached him, pretending like he was doing nothing wrong despite knowing full well that he was.

She crossed her arms and calmly demanded to know what he was up to. He looked her in the eyes unwaveringly with an intensity that would surely make it uncomfortable for her to maintain the eye contact unless she was used to such a thing. “Rippin’ up these books, obviously. Can’t ya see?” he retorted scornfully. Still making eye contact, he ripped out another handful of pages — making sure to do it slowly, drawing out the sound much longer than it needed to be — and threw them in her direction, sending pages fluttering everywhere. It was like he was daring her to do something, because he certainly wouldn’t be stopping on his own.
