The Loneliest Star

One‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ quiet evening during astronomy class, Angel was near the observatory window and had her hand on the cold telescope. The whole class was very quiet with only the light noise of the computers and pencils being heard. The night sky was like a limitless ocean full of stars shining in deep dark blue. While adjusting her telescope, a certain light grabbed her attention. It was a faint blue light that was very far away but still quite bright, and it looked as if it was the only one that was there.

Not really letting go of the star, she put her face even closer to the lens, and after a while, she took a deep breath and steadied herself. Angel was pulled in by the star. Its brightness alone was not what attracted her—it was the feeling that the star gave her, it was quiet and isolated, and the star was the only one that was shining against the dark. “What are you called?” she said softly and looked like she was talking to herself.

Curiosity was leading her on. After staring at it for quite a while, Angel threw her chair behind her and went to the front of the room. Professor McCoire was standing there, watching the class with his normal calm face, and waiting for the next question from the audience.

“Excuse me, Professor McCoire,” she said. Her tone was that of a polite but eager and impatient girl. “I have a question. I found a star and could you tell me about it?”

The professor, hearing this, turned toward her and listened to the story Angel gave of her discovery. She told about the star's color, brightness, and how it was the only one in the southern sky that looked ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌lonely.
