There's a lot of noise in the Library, much to his dismay.

In that awfully sunny Tuesday evening, in the back of the unusually full library, all by himself surrounded by a total of six or seven books is a first-year dressed in black from head to toes, the only touch of color in him being the dark green scarf on his shoulders. He's tall and looks tired like he hasn't slept properly, but Roman Kingston has been rocking the 'undead' look since his return to Hogwarts. It's weird, considering his sleeping habits have improved since the actual start of classes, but, for now, he's ignoring it. After all, he's busy.

Besides the meetings with his bandmates, his paranoia has forced him into an unhealthy habit of studying non-stop. Roman has always been what muggles would describe as a nerd. Perfecting his homework to keep his perfect grades was one thing, but this was totally unlike him. He's never spent more than six hours studying the same subject, but well, here he is. Locked inside the Library, nose deep into a book, taking notes, since his last lesson of the day ended.

He should take a break, part of him says and he wholeheartedly agrees, but, for some reason, Roman doesn't push the books aside and gets up, no. He only puts the Potions one down, and sighs heavily, rubbing his eyes as to force his tiredness to go away. There's a lot to learn, he tells himself but doesn't move to go back studying.

Guess he's finally had enough for today.

Jack had just stepped into the library with the intention of perhaps browsing his favorite history section when he was hit with a wave of noise and realized just how full the place was. He was about to make a hasty retreat when the prominent figure of a tall young man in black with a green scarf and East Asian features caught his eye. He had seen that young man before. Where had it been again?

Oh, yes. The Slytherin Common Room. He had piqued Jack’s interest by having tried to talk to the crying girl, Lilian Doll, even when no one else could have been bothered with her. Roman…Kingston; that was the name he had given them if the redhead recalled right. His act had actually inspired Jack to jump in on the conversation briefly himself.

It was strange, though. Jack tried to keep a vague account of his fellow Slytherin as best he could, particularly the ones in his year. He hadn’t heard much about this Roman prior to meeting him except perhaps briefly having seen his name on a list of Slytherin Quidditch Players. The redhead knew better than to judge people based purely on first impressions or looks, but he couldn’t help having thought that Roman wasn’t the sort of person to take his studies very seriously. The way he spoke, acted, and dressed all suggested to Jack that the other first-year didn’t really care about much in the way of academics.

That was why seeing him in the library on his own, looking exhausted with several textbooks set out before him, caught the other Slytherin’s attention. Jack decided to pay him a visit, sidling over to the table just as Roman set down his potions text.

"Well well, if it isn't Kingston!" he greeted with a grin, seating himself across from his housemate. "Fancy seeing you here! This is the last place I thought I'd find a Quidditch jock like yourself." Tilting his head to rest his chin against his fist, he asked, "Don't you have some flying maneuvers to practice or something? Then again, looking as tired as you are, I'd be surprised if you could manage to keep yourself on a broom right now."

Thankfully, his acting skills are solid enough for him to hide the fact that that boy's sudden presence scared the soul out of Roman's body. He raises his eyes in the direction of that familiar face attached to the rest of a body who's now seated across him. Messy red hair, in a pale face, combined with hazel eyes... That's Jack Burnett, his brain supplies slowly, remembering they met just a few days ago in their common room, at the same time he met Lilian Doll.

Too tired to process like he usually does, Roman's surprised when he hears everything the other says to him, sounding cheery, with that grin on his face. With his chin rested on his hand, Burnett's waiting for him to respond. He concludes that the other must have seen his name in the Slytherin Quidditch Team list, or maybe saw them practice, or whatever, he doesn't really care. What matters to him is the silly (stupid!) assumption that, due to his position as the second string Beater, that he no longer cared about his studies.

Roman likes to think that he looks like a proper student; behaves during classes, writes down all he needs, he dresses appropriately and never once disrespects his teachers. Perhaps his natural resting face might make people think otherwise, he supposes, still not quite getting it. [Let him know that having the most perfect academic record is his biggest dream (since he already formed his band!), Roman thinks]. He's smart, too. (The smartest one in the first year, he likes to tell himself in order to boost his ego). Despite those not being his most memorable characteristics, obviously overshadowed by his silver-tongue and smoothness, he seeks for knowledge more than anyone in the same year as him.

Clearly not as much as the rest of the family, considering he's the only Slytherin to come from the Kingston family tree, his brain tells him, sulking... Matter-of-factly. He's not sulking. Roman Kington, (or any Kingston, in fact) doesn't sulk, thank you very much. His face grows darker, as he frowns, giving Burnett a glare. He's almost offended, by those words, but hopefully, he doesn't let it show.

Sighing, Roman looks down at the several books in front of him, then goes back to Burnett's face again. Politely, controlled and as smooth as he can be, he says, "Burnett." He runs his fingers through his hair, and rests his back on the chair, settling for a more comfortable position, not breaking eye-contact. "Flyin' maneuvers? No, not really. I already have Quidditch mastered, ya know," He ignores the boy's comment on his tiredness and also ignores the way his head basically begs for sleep. "Wot are ya doin' here, uh? I wouldn't really consider the likes of ya as someone who'd want to study,"

Now one of Jack's favorite tactics to get people to talk was stating assumptions he suspected weren't true in order to get someone else to correct him. Furthermore, it antagonized him in the other student's eyes so he didn't have to worry about them trying to get all friendly with him. Not that he was too worried about that with Kingston if their first impressions of each other said anything about them, but it was better to be safe than sorry.

The other boy's glare and darkened expression suggested to Jack that he was headed in the right direction, though the redhead had to admit he was surprised by the polite restraint with which the Quidditch player responded. Perhaps it was one of those Asian things; politeness above all else. Selim seemed to do something similar. It must have taken a great deal of self-discipline; that was for sure. Jack found it somewhat admirable.

"Aww, you remembered me," he crooned like a crushing fan girl once Roman spoke his name. "I'm so flattered; I didn't think you would." At the comments about having Quidditch mastered and not being considered someone who'd want to study, Jack's grin only broadened.

"To be honest, I was going to leave until I saw you here. You look like you could use a break, though. Why don't you take me out for a broom ride, then, if you're so confident in your skills? You look like you could use the fresh air and I'd love to see a pro in action."

Annoying, his brain supplies at every single word that comes out of Burnett's mouth, with hints of both frustration and... Something else that he doesn't understand, not knowing how to approach this. In his eleven years, Roman has never been the type to be picked on (not that he thinks Jack Burnett is picking on him, it's more of light teasing, in his opinion), but, still, he's never been in that position before. For some reason, he doesn't find it uncomfortable, but rather exciting.

Ever since the year started, Roman's always been the one to target people. First annoying Noelle Carmona to the point that she started crying, then finding other "victims", just as that blonde Hufflepuff that started crying the moment he raised his voice after they bumped into each other, or Gabriela Marquez (but that was long ago).

Teasing them is always fun because he enjoys, not only being considered annoying or a prick but their reactions to his comebacks, as well. It's been complicated to find people that don't get offended by everything that he says, a very hard thing to do since everyone in this goddamn school seems to be a sensitive loser or a hotheaded tool. And though he barely knows that Slytherin and has only exchanged a few words with the guy (of which were always polite and controlled), Roman doubts that Burnett would be the type to get pissy or whiny about it.

Despite being tired and feeling as though he might collapse at any given second, he smiles at the other's suggestion and gets up, pretending to be ok and very active, and, smoothly, teases, "Saw me here and wanted to stay, eh? How cute, arentcha? Seems like I got myself a fan." Roman runs his fingers through his hair and winks right at him. He looks around, eyes sparkling with excitement and challenge. Completely ignoring the feeling of wariness he once felt at the sight of that Slytherin kid and staring right at Burnett's hazel eyes, he continues, "I suppose I could take ya for a broom ride. Let's go right now. Wotcha say, uh?"

At being called 'cute', Jack snorted, trying to hold back his laughter. He couldn't tell if the other boy was trying to get a rise out of him or flatter him or what. But he knew no one else had tried to call him that before. The other Quidditch players he had met surely wouldn't have. He knew at least two of the Gryffindor ones who probably would have been happier if he were dead.

The wink caught him off guard and to his horror, the redhead felt a subtle warmth in his cheeks which suggested to him that he must have been blushing. Well that was annoying. The last thing he needed was for this guy to think he was actually crushing on him. He glanced away awkwardly, still grinning, but sheepishly; mostly out of disbelief and humiliation at his own reaction.

"Uh...sure, but what about your books?" Jack asked, gesturing to the small tower of texts on the table. "You seem pretty tired. I can take them back to the dorms if you like and meet you on the Quidditch Training Pitch. That work for you?"

It struck him as strange that his housemate was being so oddly accommodating of him, especially since he was pretty sure he was being and had been fairly obnoxious to the other Slytherin. His usual suspicions made him wonder if Roman was up to something. If he was, however, Jack could deal with that when the time came.

The slight blush that appears on the redhead's cheeks is like the most precious treat to Roman, who smiles, proud, crossing his arms, feeling tall, capable, and, now, very much awake. This is fun, he thinks, kicking his tiredness away. He looks at the small pile of books that he'd searched for in the hopes of studying after Burnett points at it, offering to take them to the dorms. The pile almost looks back at him, sad to be left behind, but there's not much he can only.

There's only so much self-destruction Roman can take for a day, and he's already crossed the line when he dived nose-deep into those dusty books, thank you very much. Frankly, he doesn't see himself going back to reading those anytime soon this week, but, not wanting to look sloppy or anything, he shakes his head and says, "Nah, matey, it's alright, I'll put them back,"

He moves to take the books, using both his arms to support them. It's too much for him to carry all by himself, but he doesn't say anything to Burnett, his pride making him bite back the words as he walks towards the shelves. "We can go to the dorms, though, if ya wanna accompany me or wotever."

His voice lowers a bit when he goes in between to shelves. Roman puts two of the books back to their place, still holding the other two. He steps out of there and crosses the room to the other shelves. For some reason, he feels like he has to explain why he needs to go there.

Roman says while putting the rest of the books back in place, "The school broom I use is there, anyways. I don't like leaving it at the locker room, ya know..." Once he's out, Roman rests his shoulder against one of the thick shelves, smirks, and staring right at the other Slytherin, he says, "So, ya comin'?"

The Quidditch player's reaction to the sight of his flushed face almost made Jack want to roll his eyes as he sneered in embarrassment, but he managed to resist the former. When he saw Roman try to take all the books in his arms, however, that was when the redhead put his foot down.

"Don't carry them all by yourself," he scolded, honestly amused that the other Slytherin seemed to be so stubborn about his pride. Jack reached out to grab half the texts from Roman, waiting for the raven-haired boy to put the first pair away before following him across the room to the other set of shelves.

"You have a particular school broom you use?" Jack asked, grinning. "What does it matter which one it is? Don't they all work the same?" As far as he was aware, all the school brooms were the same make and model. Perhaps some had gotten more use out of them than others, though, or some had their own little quirks to them. Maybe Roman was just especially attached to his.

His peer's pose of leaning against the shelf almost caused the redhead to laugh aloud. At last, he couldn't refrain from asking his question any more. "Are you trying to look especially cool or something? Because you're behaving like a preening peacock." Smirking, he waved a dismissive hand. "Save it for the girls, Kingston. That's not gonna work on me."

[quote]Burnett scolds him, with earns an eyebrow raise from him and the other moves closer to him to take some of textbooks from his arms, but Roman directs him a serious look and mumbles, ”It’s fine,”

Merlin knows how much Roman dislikes being helped. Raised from a very young age to always do things on your own and that those that needed others to do it for them were weaklings, whatever the help may be for, it was hard for him to even adapt to the house elves back home. Roman helps them every now and then, however, with whatever he can. He’s tried cooking many times, which didn’t turn out to be an exactly terrible idea.

Then, grinning, Burnett asks about his broom, asking, basically, if there’s any difference between the school ones, probably finding weird that he keeps his in the dorms. There isn’t much of a difference, really, they’re all exactly the same. Roman understand the confusion.

”Nah, ye, it’s just like the others,” he nods, shrugging, like now he doesn’t care. The image of the poor broom, resting sadly, all by itself in his room makes him get an idea, so Roman continues, “... Still have to do something to make it stand out, just can’t think of anything. Been busy. Band and shit, ya know,”

Of course, he finds a way to mention The Witching Hour, what was he supposed to do? Not talk about the best thing he’s ever done? No, thanks. He’s sure Burnett doesn’t know that he’s the leader of a brand new punk-rock band, but he’ll gladly talk about it for hours.

”I don’t like leaving it around because, well, it’s mine. Call me sentimental— Is that even the proper term? Wotever, I don’t care either way,”adds Roman on the topic of brooms, brushing the band aside, waiting to see if Burnett would ask him about it. Playing with his hair, he continues, “Also, ya never know when some stupid Gryffindor will enter the locker room and fook with our brooms...”

Oh so clearly fighting back his laughter, Jack goes on to compare him with a peacock, and Roman immediately gets away from the shelves. Not embarrassed or anything, clearly not. Doesn’t matter what his burning ears might try to tell him.

Ignoring the slight burning sensation in his cheeks as well, Roman jokes, “Wot can I say? I’m naturally cool,” He runs his fingers through his hair, more dramatically than anything, and, smoothly adds, still with a light tone to his tone. “But, oh well, if it doesn’t work now, it’s bound to someday, I suppose. We’ll just have to wait around and see, Burnett,”

When Roman insisted that he was fine without being helped, Jack dropped his arms and blinked. Oh, a 'tough guy', then - protective of your pride. Good to know. Well, Jack would let him have his way...for now. There would be plenty of opportunity to play with the potential of that knowledge later.

The transformation from Roman's serious expression to his delighted grin was instantaneous. Jack was a little surprised by how quickly it happened. Still, he smiled and nodded in acknowledgement at the comment about trying to make the broom stand out. And how he'd been busy with 'band and shit'.

Smooth. Very casual, Jack thought, fighting down the urge to laugh that suddenly seized him Roman seemed to be trying so hard to seem cool and instead Jack was finding his attempts to be downright adorable. Well, he was all for playing along. He wanted to see where this was headed. And besides, he enjoyed allowing people to underestimate him. Let Roman think he was fooling Jack all he wanted; the redhead didn't mind.

"Wow, a band?! Like you play music and stuff?" he gushed, hazel eyes widening in wonder and excitement. "What's it called? What part do you play in it? I had no idea Hogwarts had anything like that."

Laughing lightly, he affirmed, "Yeah, 'sentimental' is the right term. And I guess you're right about the Gryffindors; they can be pretty competative." Jack could have named at least a couple Gryffindor Quidditch players who were especially so. He could understand why Roman might have wanted to take precautions against them just in case.

"So...you're diligent in your studies, on the Slytherin Quidditch Team, part of a band...seems like all you're missing is a girlfriend for your perfect status. Unless you have one of those already, which I wouldn't be surprised with your 'natural coolness'," he chuckled.

With a coy smile, he watched Roman run his fingers through his hair as he continued. "Speaking of girls...I was wondering. Why did you talk to that one crying lass in the common room the other day? Doll or whatever her name was. Were you trying to pick her up or something?" Jack playfully nudged Roman's side with an elbow. "Did you think she was cute? Or are crying girls just easier to get to like you?"
