aeron went to the library after lunch, mostly just to get away from the noise in the common room. it was quieter there, smelled like dust and old paper. rows and rows of books that looked older than half the students in the castle. he didn’t really have anything specific he wanted to read so he just walked between the shelves, letting his hand brush over the spines.
he stopped when he saw one with a darker cover, no title on the spine. he pulled it out and opened it a little. the first page said something about defensive theory against dark magic. he frowned. the words dark magic always caught his attention.
it wasn’t a spellbook — just some introduction text, explaining how dangerous that kind of magic was and why students should never try it. there were a few illustrations of old wizards using curses that went wrong, notes about how dark magic “corrupts the caster’s mind and soul.” he read a few lines before closing it again.
it wasn’t that he wanted to learn it, just… he’d always heard whispers about that kind of power from home. his father never talked about it directly, but the subject had a certain weight in their house.
he put the book back carefully, making sure it looked untouched. when he turned around.
he sat down after that and picked up something else, simple charms book for beginners. still, his mind kept drifting back to the one he put away. not out of curiosity exactly — more like he wanted to understand why it was so tempting to everyone they warned about it

Mary had watched a boy take a book from the shelves, she wasn't really spying... necessarily. Really it was technically his fault. Mary was minding her own business, reading Potions and Spells trying to get a head start on studying for her classes, not that she was enjoying it the book was painfully boring, when he came out of nowhere taking a book from the shelves, look very suspicious might Mary add, and then put it back, l mean, hello suspicious! If he didn't want nosy people like Mary, who really should have been studying, staring he shouldn't have looked so suspicious. And besides Mary wasn't a bad person, she just had a over active imagination! So, she had thought for a moment that he had hexed the book to eat anyone who opened it, or maybe enchanted it so the reader would fall asleep! Mary knew these were crazy ideas but she couldn't help it besides, she also wanted a distraction from her boring book. Mary closed her book and got up and strode over to this mysterious boy. "Mary Bueno." Mary had tried to hold her tongue but her couldn't stop herself from blurting out, "Did you just hex that book?"

Aeron turned his head slowly when the girl spoke, blinking once like he wasn’t entirely sure she was serious. For a moment he just stared at her then his gaze drifted lazily to the shelf, then back to her again.
“aeron blackthorn,” he said finally as if it was formality rather than an introduction. Then with a tone of casual mockery, he added, “Yeah, hexed it. Terrible curse, really. Anyone who opens it gets swallowed whole by the pages. Very tragic.”
He leaned back against the shelf. corners of his mouth tugged into something close to a smirk. “I was planning to leave it there for the next poor student who can’t mind their own business.”
He let the silence stretch just long enough to make her second-guess herself before adding with a shrug “Or maybe” he said, voiced with an edge of amusement “I was just reading.”
aeron tilted his head. “Ravenclaws are always that delusional? Or is it just a personal trait of yours?”
Without waiting for her response, he reached out and tapped the spine of the book with finger. “you can open it if you’re that curious” he said. “Maybe you’ll get lucky and it won’t eat you.”

“yeah, hexed it. terrible curse, really. anyone who opens it gets swallowed whole by the pages. very tragic.” Mary was a little taken aback, she wasn't expecting him to say anything. She thought maybe he would brush her off and walk away, or maybe hex her for being nosy. She didn't think he would admit it! Mary's curiosity was sparked, however it was dashed when he added, “or maybe,” he added “i was just reading.”. Great. Not only was he not a dark wizard, he was being sarcastic! Mary was hoping for bit of excitement and what did she get instead? Sarcasm. Mary was two seconds from walking away when, he said "ravenclaws are always that delusional?", Mary wasn't snippy, or rude at heart but she couldn't let a comment like that go unanswered. It would be a insult to Ravenclaws! "Only when they see someone acting suspicious. So really its not delusion if l'm right and you really did hex the book." Mary was surprised when he challenged her to take the book, and really she should have walked away, but the book looked like it was calling to her, waiting for her to take it and find what secrets it kept... how could Mary walk away? So, Mary took the book off the shelves and opened it.

The moment Mary’s fingers brushed the cover, Aeron’s smirk deepened. He had to bite the inside of his cheek to keep from laughing. He stayed still with folded arms, his eyes full with amusement as he waited for something dramatic to happen. When nothing did, he tilted his head and let out a quiet laugh that turned into something louder and almost rude.
“see? I always knew ravenclaws are just nerds,” he said, shaking his head like he was genuinely disappointed.
He gave her a quick once over before adding with mock seriousness “After all, I’m a first-year student, not a fan of Voldemort. And also you could pay attention to the way i reacted,if i would curse it i would probably look more evil than i appear to be.”
aeron straightened up, brushing invisible dust from his sleeve. faint smirk was still there though,it rarely left his face. “relax ravenclaw” he added. “Just because I’m handsome doesn’t mean I’m evil.”
the way he highlighted *handsome* made it sound like he truly believed it and for a moment even he realized how idiotic that sounded. Still he didn’t take it back. He showed her a lazy grin
Then, with his hands in his pockets he turned on his heel and walked away

Mary's shoulder slumped, not because she was paralyzed or she was curse to sleep while standing for all eternity, which would have been a preferred fate than the one she had currently. Pure Embarrassment. Nothing happened, the book truly was just a book with a fancy cover! And this strange boy, whose name was Aeron, was just a cocky reader, and she a nosy bookworm. However even as she blushed with embarrassment she couldn't bring herself to apologize! For one, his rude laughter and his smirking didn't really help! And two he was rubbing it in, “see? I always knew ravenclaws are just nerds,” Mary's blush deepened and she opened her mouth but nothing came out, she didn't have a comeback, which was infuriating. “After all, I’m a first-year student, not a fan of Voldemort. And also you could pay attention to the way i reacted,if i would curse it i would probably look more evil than i appear to be.” Mary once again wanted to say something, maybe that she wasn't looking at his face and she was trying to prove a point, maybe she wasn't as good as a detective as she thought, or maybe she could have thought a little more before accusing him of being a dark wizard... but once again nothing came out, and Mary's legs weren't working so she couldn't storm off. aeron straightened up, brushing invisible dust from his sleeve. faint smirk was still there though,it rarely left his face. “relax ravenclaw” he added. “Just because I’m handsome doesn’t mean I’m evil.”. Handsome? Handsome?! Not only was this boy making her speechless, and not in a good way, he was also arrogant! Mary's whole face was red at this point as he gave her a lazy grin and walked off, at this point Mary's voice worked, "Your a jerk!" was all she had to say, and all that she really needed to say as she herself turn around and stormed away.
