A quiet corner

The library door gave a soft creak as Skylar slipped inside. Only one of the tall oak doors stood open. The air inside was warm and quiet. Also, it looked alive in its own way.
She stepped in the carpet. Her eyes wandered up the tall shelves that seemed to go high up forever. A few books drifted lazily in the air or floated from one shelf to another shelf. Some book looked like it waited someone to grab itself.
Skylar aunt’s words still echoed in her mind as she walked through.
The creatures no one else believed in. Some could dance in the moonlight when everyone else was asleep… and some odd birds could vanish when frightened, leaving only feathers behind.
The memory gave a smile to her. She couldn’t go wandering into the Forbidden Forest, so the library was the perfect place to fulfill her curiosity.
Skylar walked past the long tables lined with parchment and quills, until her gaze caught the silver plaque across the aisle: Restricted Section.
“Not today,” she muttered as her heart beat faster. She forced herself to look away.
She turned down another row of shelves. Her fingers ran along the spines until a familiar red book catched her attention. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It looked almost like the one in her bag, but older. The books’ cover seemed like it stayed in here from ages ago.
“Maybe this version has something mine doesn’t,”she murmured.
Skylar took it to a seat near the fireplace. The flames gave a warm light across the pages. She opened the book carefully and began to read.
The Demiguise gentle and shy, invisible until it wanted to be seen.
The Diricawl a bird that vanished in a puff of feathers when startled.
Each page felt like proof that her aunt’s old stories might not have been just stories after all. She noted a few information onto her papers, After a while, she leaned back and smiled to herself.
“Guess you weren’t making it up after all, Aunt Amelia.”
There were so many fascinating entries, but..
“No sketches? Shame.” Skylar leaned closer. Her eyes narrowed a little. It would be great if she can see her imagination into a shape and share them with her friend.
Even so, she stayed there for a long time, surrounded by the quiet library. The longer she read, the more she could almost feel those creatures breathing between the lines.

Aisling dashed into the Library as soon as she received Skylar's owl. The two girls had already discussed learning more about her aunt's encounters with some of the magical creatures around the world. Granted, Aisling being Muggleborn, she didn't know much about them, but she was ecstatic to learn, especially since these were potentially cryptids among the wizarding world, let alone her original Muggle life.
Aisling smiled when she saw Skylar up near the Library's fireplace. Why is there a fire in a place where the books could easily get burnt? she often asked herself, but then again, whenever she went to the Great Hall, she would be quickly reminded of how hot wax dripped down from the floating candles. As she shook off the thought, Aisling sat across from Skylar. "I came as soon as I got your owl," she said.
Aisling peered to see what book Skylar was reading. She raised an eyebrow. "Wait," she said, "is ... isn't that our textbook?" She paused for a second. "From what you told me back in the greenhouse," she added, "you made it sound like your aunt came across creatures that were lesser known. I ... I mean, I could be wrong, but I'm not sure if the beasts your aunt talked about would be in our classes, especially since we're first years." Aisling hated admitting this. After all, she was the same person who so desperately wanted to take the Care of Magical Creatures course by now. But her and Skylar were both First Years. Unless Skylar's aunt was encountering some of the beings they were warned about in Defense Against the Dark Arts, and those were just average annoyances mostly, Aisling wasn't entirely sure. At the same time, Aisling was willing to be proven wrong.

Skylar flipped a few pages of the book before she was excited about Aisling arriving. Her eyes brightened when she found the interested things she’d been looking for.
“See this?” She said while taped her finger against a few lines in the book.
“This… the Diricawl. It looks like a dodo, but it can vanish in a puff of feathers when startled and reappear somewhere else. Muggles thought it went extinct because they didn’t realize it could disappear like that.” Skylar smiled faintly, half amused by the thought.
“That matches what my aunt said,” she added. “Some odd birds could vanish when frightened, leaving only feathers behind.”
Skylar noticed Aisling watching her curiously.
A girl said, "From what you told me back in the greenhouse," she added, "you made it sound like your aunt came across creatures that were lesser known. I ... I mean, I could be wrong, but I'm not sure if the beasts your aunt talked about would be in our classes, especially since we're first years.”
Skylar frowned a little.
“I don’t think we’ll learn about these in our first or even second year,” Skylar admitted, glancing back at the page.
“But I kind of get what my aunt meant now. As the book said, the Diricawl can make itself vanish completely even Muggles believed they’d died out. Can you imagine how rare it must be to see one in person?”
Her tone was thoughtful, not lecturing.
“Maybe wizards know they exist, but I doubt many have seen what they really look like. I hope when we learn about them in a future year, we can see a real one.”
Skylar focused on the book again and flipped another page, her eyes softening.
“As I read, it was not every creature that is dangerous,” She said with a steady voice. “My aunt always said that the ones people don’t talk about much — the quiet ones — are the ones that survive because they don’t need to fight.”
“This one’s also rare to be found. It is called the Demiguise. It says here it’s a peaceful, herbivorous beast that can turn invisible and even see the future.” Her tone softened slightly, almost reverent.
“It’s gentle and also shy, actually. It only disappears when it feels threatened. Not dangerous at all unless someone tries to capture it.”
Skylar closed the book halfway and leaned her arms on the table.
“Maybe that’s why I wanted to know more about them. I want to see something like my aunt experienced. Something that doesn’t need to be defended against, but also rare to find.”

Aisling nodded at what her friend had said. It would explain why some animals went extinct, according to Muggles. That wasn't to say that animals didn't or even couldn't go extinct, whether by natural or man-made interference, but it would explain why some of them seemed to just ... disappear. She leaned in closer to Skylar to see if she could get a better view. "Does the book say where diricawls might be native to?" she asked. Aisling smiled. It was clear to see that she liked to be proven wrong, at least when it came to something like this.
Aisling listened to Skylar as she explained why some magical creatures weren't as dangerous as the wizarding world believed. In her first year at Hogwarts, she could only remember learning about minor creatures, mainly from her Defense Against the Dark Arts course. That didn't mean that all the creatures that were taught about were docile, but most of their encounters were relatively simple to navigate, given the right means and antidotes if needed.
Skylar's next example emphasized her point. After all, demiguises were herbivores, so they were less likely to attack other beings. Aisling read a bit more about the creature. It was classified as XXXX according to the Ministry of Magic. She furrowed her eyebrows. Why would the Ministry label them to be so high when they're relatively harmless? she thought. The only reason she could think of that made sense was of how elusive, and virtually hermit-like, they tended to be.

Skylar nodded. She followed Aisling’s line of thought. “That’s really a good question,” She opened the book again and glanced back at the text. “Let’s see…”
Her finger traced along the line as she read. “It says here that Demiguises are classified as XXXX. It’s not because they’re dangerous, but because they’re extremely difficult to find and capture.”
She looked up at Aisling with a thoughtful eyes. “So, I guess it’s less about what they do and more about how tricky they are to study. If something can turn invisible and see what’s about to happen next… well, you’d have to be very lucky to even see one.”
Skylar smiled a little. “It’s kind of funny. The Ministry uses the same system rating deadly beasts and shy little creatures that just don’t want to be found.”
She flipped back to the Diricawl entry and added, “Oh! and here it says they’re native to Mauritius. That’s an island east of Africa.”
Her tone softened again. Skylar curiosity’ had shifted into something more wistful. “Makes me wonder how many other creatures are still out there, just… living quietly where no one can see them. ”
Skylar turned another page, her finger stopping halfway.
“Oh! wait… another XXXX one. Hippogriff.”
She tilted her head, eyes scanning the texts. “A proud creature. Not dangerous unless you insult them first, and...”
She was surprised.
“It can be tamed?”
Her voice lightened a bit. “I saw it once in the sky, and it looked like… a live free creature. I never knew it was classified as xxxx level.”
She looked thoughtful for a second. “Makes you think, doesn’t it? If it can be tamed, that means it’s not that really scary?”

Aisling nodded at Skylar's train of thought. Just from this textbook alone, she felt like her Defense Against the Dark Arts lessons were already being debunked in a way. Or maybe the textbook was debunking the Ministry's labelling? Regardless, it didn't make sense in her mind. She pointed at the demiguises' entry in the book. "Then it needs to be labelled differently," Aisling said, "the level assumes that the creature's dangerous. If they wanted to point that it's elusive, it should be noted somewhere else."
Aisling read on in the hippogriff's entry. Her eyes widened. "Wait," she said, "you ... you can't even blink when looking at a hippogriff?" She shook her head. "Now that is worth the ... wait a second. Only XXX? How? A hippogriff's temperament alone should be XXXX!" She furrowed her eyebrows. "It's probably just me," she admitted, "but I don't know how the Ministry categorizes which creature belongs at which level. It just seems so bizarre to me." She scoffed. "Hippogriffs in the same category as nifflers," she grumbled, "that's absolutely ridiculous!
Aisling shook her head. "Anyway," she said, snapping out of her tangent, "so the diricawls and demiguises are what your aunt came across. And she possibly went to a country in Africa." She pondered for a moment. It was unlikely that she and/or Skylar could travel to Uagadou soon, considering their academics limited them to Hogwarts, let alone visit the continent to find a diricawl. And was Uagadou even close to the island nation that Skylar mentioned? Aisling wasn't sure. "What about some of the creatures that are more native to here?" she asked, "Did she find any during her time at Hogwarts?" She leaned in closer to Skylar. "I bet the Forbidden Forest has a thing or two when it comes to magical creatures," she whispered.

Skylar’s eyes were bright and curious. She smile a little at how passionately her friend picked apart the Ministry’s system. It was actually quite refreshing to hear someone question, rather than accept unquestioningly what the book’s authors thought.
“You are right,” she said, looking down again at the open page. “Perhaps they just wanted everything to fit perfectly within their system”
When Aisling said hippogriffs, Skylar gave a small chuckle. “Yes. They’re proud creatures. My aunt told me they can feel the tiniest wave of disrespect like how you blink.” She half laughed, half awed in her tone. She pounded with a finger on the page. “Perhaps the Ministry have categorized ‘dangerous to wizards’ by how much damage it would do them rather than how dangerous a creature acts in reality.”
Her eyes wandered towards the window, and for an instant she was elsewhere. “My aunt said she saw a hippogriff once, back when she was still a student. She told me it was a breathtaking creatures, but also terrifying”
Skylar tilted her head, thinking for a moment before answering. “Uagadou’s in Uganda, right? So it’s on the mainland. It not exactly close to Mauritius, I think, at least not by broom or Floo Network standards.”
When Aisling mentioned the Forbidden Forest, Skylar’s voice became gentler. “I have only ever seen it from the stables up at the edge. Just birds and the horses, occasionally a Hippogriff in flight, never anything beyond that.” She paused for a moment. “Such a shame, but my aunt… she has certainly been in there. She’s describe stories about centaurs, and … something else.”
She smiled nervously with her lips. “I never did know if she was warning me or simply testing my curiosity. She always said the same thing ‘If you’re not ready to face what waits, do not find yourself in the woods.’ ”
Skylar turned around to face Aisling again and, her voice lowered to just above a murmur. “Still … part of me really wants to get there someday. Don’t you?”

Aisling rose an eyebrow. "Danger it could do to them?" she asked. It didn't make sense. If Skylar meant that the Ministry labelled the creatures by how dangerous they were to their public image, then that said more about the Ministry than it did the creatures. After all, animals, even magical ones, would never understand how human civilization worked. Animals of all kinds existed in a different society. Aisling shook her head. "The Ministry's categorizing doesn't make sense," she said, "hopefully, they change the category levels. Make it straightforward for everyone."
Aisling smiled at what Skylar's aunt had said about the Forbidden Forest. "Sounds intriguing," she said, "now we definitely have to go!" She looked around, hoping that no one else had heard her. The last thing she wanted was another student snitching on her plot to venture into the Forbidden Forest. Aisling paused for a second. "Wait," she said, "why is the Forbidden Forest 'forbidden'?" Sure, Aisling knew there were dangers in those woods like the hellish hippogriffs and wild werewolves, but even the mild-mannered mooncalves and deer called the Forbidden Forest home. "Yeah, I know hippogriffs live there," she said, "but what dangers besides them could live there?"

Skylar tilted her head, thinking. “Well… there are still good reasons to call it the Forbidden Forest,” she said quietly. “There are dangerous creatures living in there like giants, werewolves, even acromantulas.”
Thinking about a huge spider made her realize something. Skylar lowered her voice, glancing toward the window as if she were going back to her memory.
“My aunt once said there are things in there that even she doesn’t fully understand. Some of them might not be evil, but the forest isn’t exactly… safe.”
Depressed eyes and a hopeless voice of her aunts she recognized from these words. Back then, Skylar hadn’t thought much of it. But now… she did. Amelia, her aunt, loved telling stories, yet she never said anything about living in the forest, only about what she saw in it.
Amelia had seen a lot, which meant she’d spent more than just a few hours in those woods. Maybe even years. Maybe there was something more to it. Could it be about her uncle being in Azkaban?
Skylar paused for a long time before she looked back at Aisling with a half-smile. “ Sorry, I just... I think... Nothing... That’s why it’s forbidden. Because there are still creatures that are monsters, and because not everyone would know how to communicate with them.”
She ran her fingers along the edge of the book with a bit excitement. “Maybe the creatures aren’t the only things that live there. Maybe the forest itself is alive.”
Skylar gave a small, embarrassed smile, though there was genuine emotion in her eyes more than bragging. “Sorry again, I’m rambling. Actually, I didn’t know anything much about the forest. My entire life was in the gardens, and this is just a story I heard, which I like to fantasize on. Too much sometimes he..he.”
She scratched her head and gazed straight at Aisling again. “If we ever did go,” she said in a low voice, “we’d have to promise to respect the creature we saw before using any spells. Should we?”

Aisling nodded at Skylar's condition. "Of course we would," she said, "I don't want to have to harm any creature at all." The fact that it was even in question at all was a bit shocking to her. "I couldn't imagine hurting any of the creatures," she added, "and of course I'd give my undivided attention to the hippogriffs." That was true, but also because Aisling did not want to be mauled by such an imposing beast.
Aisling pondered on other possibilities as to why the Forbidden Forest was, in fact, forbidden. Surely, there had to be more danger than the creatures, though she understood that many of them could be ferocious. Maybe it had to do with its history. After all, Lord Voldemort himself was found seeking refuge within the woods only a few decades ago. While Aisling wasn't alive to hear about it then, certainly the professors and headmaster were wary of that possibility. Did Hogwarts fear that another dark wizard or witch could be lingering there once again, even if it wasn't the Death Eaters or their leader himself? She shook her head. Aisling figured the likelihood of another dark wizard like Voldemort lurking around the castle, while plausible, was very unlikely. "Do you think there's another reason why they say the Forbidden Forest is 'forbidden'?" Aisling asked, "Besides all of the creatures." She wondered if Skylar felt similarly.
