Today was one of those days that felt like it hadn't quite figured out what it wanted to be. Not sunny, not cold -- just grey enough that the light seemed to hesitate before entering the room.

As usual, Ara was tired. Not the physical kind but the kind that made everything feel heavier than it should but the tired where you just wanted to get the day over with. At least she had something to somehow look forward to today. The hum of the castle corridors was soft enough that her thoughts could wander. And they did. Reluctantly, unwillingly, but constantly.

By the time she reached the corridor outside the Duelling Club, Ara had already told herself -- twice -- to not worry about Minho in his cage.s

The iron plaque that was set on the sad stone wall gleamed with the dueling's rules engraved on it for everyone to see. Ara in passing, brushed her fingers on it before pushing the door open, thereby allowing the humming echo of the chamber's wards to be heard by her. To her, the place has always been magnificent -- spacious, with high ceilings, and stone walls that had their hardness softened by years of dueling. Along the room, four stations were set up, each with a flickering enchanted banner above it that would be naming the spell being taught.

Ara placed her bag on the mat's edge and knelt down for a moment to see what it contained. Wand holster, gloves, a small enchanted pouch containing practice targets -- the wood was enchanted, just a little bit charmed for flame resistance -- and a flask of water, mainly for show. She pulled down the cuffs of her uniform sleeves and then stood up. Her gestures were exact, more of a habit than of a show of vanity. Control always made her firm. Control meant there were no accidents.

Across the room, The other "tutors" were nearby, their groups forming loose circles of chatter. Ara’s, meanwhile, was still trickling in -- the usual mix of curious faces and anxious ones.

She took a good look at the list assigned to her. Good. Four students. Manageable.

Ara didn’t smile. She never did at the start.

Instead, she gave a slight tilt of her head as a greeting and spoke, voice even and measured. “I assume all of you know what Incendio does,” she began, pacing a short line in front of them. “Fire-making charm. Simple in theory. Complicated in practice.”

"Burning yourself is easy."

Her boots echoed faintly against the polished stone as she stopped, wand sliding into her hand like an extension of thought. “Today isn’t about creating the biggest flame,” she continued, tone soft but cutting through the air easily. “It’s all about mastering it. Fire follows your focus. If you lose it, it won’t think twice before burning your own -- whether it'd be yourself of your teammates. Duelists would know that painfully well.”. She scanned the group one more time with her eyes. The slight hint of warmth made her next sentence milder. “No need to fear -- the targets are bewitched, and I’ve become quicker in extinguishing the fires than in starting them.” With that, she retreated to the dueling mat, casting her wand once. A lone practice dummy became visible about six meters away, its coating a dull grey and smokeproof finish catching the light.

“First, watch.”

Ara let out a single breath. Her positioning was modified on its own -- legs apart, shoulders turned, wrist relaxed but under control. The wand went up, and the tip was pointed straight at the dummy's center. From the last few years, she's gained a lot of experience. Even though her aim wasn't the best, her spells were not going to backfire on her now.

"Incendio.”

The incantation rolled off her tongue like a steady breath, not rushed, not theatrical. The magic responded in kind -- a large ribbon of orange flame burst from her wand’s tip, curling through the air before striking the dummy’s chest. It bloomed for a moment -- heat, light, motion -- before she lowered her wand slightly, allowing the fire to stabilize into a controlled burn. It wasn’t wild or impressive, just precise. Contained.

She turned her wrist and the flame snuffed itself out in a whisper of smoke.

“That,” she said simply, “is the goal.” Her gaze drifted between them again. “Some of you might struggle with intensity. Some with focus. Some with pronunciation. You’ll find out soon enough which.”

"Also, it's 'in-SEN-dee-o'. Not 'in-SEEN-di-oh' nor 'ein-sen-DEE-oh'. Little flourishes can lead to something bigger." She moved to the side and pointed out the empty place next to her. “We will take turns. No one has to hurry. This is not a competition. It is a matter of discovering your strengths in control and then also your weaknesses.” The silence was so long that it was almost a pause. Then she added, almost carelessly, “And if at any time you think that you are going to singe your eyebrows, just put your wand down. I will take care of it, but of course, I'll have my little laugh first.”

The slightest hint of a smile appeared on her face for a moment and then disappeared again. Ara turned her attention again to her wand, that was still giving her a warm feeling to her hand. Fire. Always her area of responsibility. She overused it in that one duel anyway.

She moved her sleeve again, softly. Teaching was not the easiest thing. Tutoring required something different. Patience, possibly. Understanding. Two traits that she wasn't exactly known for having. The faint smell of singed wood still lingered from her earlier cast. She could feel the trace of it in her lungs -- sharp, dry, grounding. The room hummed softly with energy; voices from the other groups echoing just enough to fill the silence without intruding.

Her eyes flicked briefly toward the nearest candle on the table beside them. With a subtle motion, she pointed her wand at it. The tiny flame obeyed, stretching taller, then shrinking to a pinpoint. “Like that. See?” She didn’t need to explain the metaphor. Ara stepped back once more, the weight of the morning pressing faintly behind her eyes. There was something weirdly poetic about this -- teaching people how to summon fire while trying to keep her own under control.

When she finally spoke again, her voice had softened. “All right. Who’s first?”

October 15|Dueling club room

Karime was excited and waiting for this day to come. The Autumn ball had just happened a week before and Karime started heading to the Dueling room. She remembers signing up to learn a spell from an upper year student/tutor. She was a bit nervous because this is her first time going to the dueling room so she got lost a bit and had to ask some teachers but eventually found the room. She entered and saw other tutors and students in circles. She found her group and saw three other students, one of them she remembers seeing which is Violence but only because she is in the same house as her. Karime knows that she is a second year student and so they wait for the tutor to arrive.

The tutor eventually arrives and the first thing she says is telling us how she assumes (maybe even hopes) we know what Incendio does. I nod my head as I remember hearing about it from the charm teacher. Ara starts explaining the spell and what we will be doing. Karime listens on how to pronounce it, the wand movement and tips to remember so the spell doesn't back fire or anything. Karime watches as Ara performs the spell perfectly at the dummy that is enchanted. Karime feels a bit intimidated and fearful as she hopes she gets it right and doesn't burn herself, anyone or anything. Karime has been doing well in charm class and good with pronunciation. She is good with focus too but the intensity has been where she is a bit weaker and even may be her weakness.

After Ara demonstrates how to do the spell and to let her know if we get overwhelmed, put our wand down and she will deal with it. She demonstrates on a candle on a nearby table to show what intensity is like and Karime was amazed by the control that Ara had. Ara then looks to ask who wants to go first. Karime looks to the others as she wants to go first but also doesn't want to seem confident or be embarrassed. But she peps herself up saying that she will go first. Karime goes to the dummy Ara was just in front of. Karime lets out a slow breath as she gets into position. Legs apart, shoulder turned and her body relaxed as she calms her mind and focuses

Karime looks at the dummy and slowly but with confidence says “in-SEN-dee-o”. Karime feels and sees a stream of orange flame burst from her wand’s tip, but she felt her heart jump a bit when she felt it was slightly more intense then she wanted. She almost lost focus but didn't and put her want down as the strike hit the dummy at the chest and allowed the fire to stabilize eventually. Karime feels her heart beating as she looks to Ara for tips or anything feeling a bit of a chill.

After her turn she stepped back and watched as the rest of the people went. She felt that it went well even if she had a bit of a flux but happy she was able to keep focused and the fire felt nice when she could feel the heat. It made her feel nice.

"𝓥iolence was still recovering from the after-effects of the ball. Mentally. Physically. Emotionally. Her entire body hurt from carrying that heavy dress. Her arms pained from being in the water for too long. She'd skipped her classes for the entire week. Coming face to face with what she'd accepted as her past wasn't easy. It hurt to see her. Every atom of Vi's just wished to pull her close to Vi. But she couldn't, not after what had happened.

Now, she was in the Duelling club to learn spells. If she couldn't focus on theory lectures, she could atleast hone her duelling skills. Which were none, but this was a start, right? Ara Villa, a fourth year student would be taking the classes. Vi entered the chamber, standing under the flickering banner that said, "Incendio." There was another girl already there when she arrived. She gave a small smile to the girl and focused on Ara. Incendio was supposed to be easy, wasn't it? Ofcourse the wand movements would be not easy to learn, but they'd get it, right? Vi knew she could do it, but did Ara really have to scare her students like that?

Vi focused on what Ara was saying. She raised her hand and waited until Ara was done before she started speaking, "You say, if we lose focus, the fire can burn anything. But shouldn't the fire just extinguish if we aren't paying attention?" It might've been a dumb question but being interactive in class was always better than staying quiet and letting the confusion linger. She focused again on Ara, as she demonstrated the spell. Vi looked at her posture, perhaps a bit too apparently, and made mental notes of her position. Legs apart- almost shoulder-width, shoulders turned, and wrist natural. A quick movement, which Vi couldn't distinguish in the spur of the moment, and the dummy lit up.

She listened intently as Ara explained the incantation, and what not to do. She noticed the ghost of a smile on Ara's face before it disappeared again. Was she always this nonchalant? Interesting. She instantly stepped back when Ara asked who'd like to go first. Violence would rather let someone else take the lead for something new and see how others were doing before going herself. She didn't doubt herself, she just didn't want to come off as a know-it-all or make a fool of herself. Either way, she let another girl go first, and watched her try the incantation. She seemed nervous, but she didn't give up on her spell and let the fire stabilize. That was good, confidence.

Violence stepped forward after the girl was done, gripping her wand; not too tight, but just enough. Legs apart, shoulders squared, wrist naturally loose, but controlled. She sucked in a breath and pointed her wand at the dummy, her focused at its centre, before she moved her wand in the shape of a flame, muttering, "in-SEN-dee-o!" She watched as a burst of bright orange flames shot out of her wand, hitting the dummy squarely in the chest. The fire rose, it instantly became hot and Violence began to sweat. She lifted her other to wipe her forehead and lost focus on her spell. "Aah!" She dropped her wand instantly and looked at Ara, sheepishly, maybe a little disappointed too. "I'm sorry I didn't consider that fire makes it hot too, my bad. Let me try again, heh."

She looked at the dummy, and said the incantation out loud again, moving her wand in the same way she did before. This time, the flames hit the dummy, and she looked at it watching it light up, loosening her wrist a little bit more to stabilize the flame. The dummy was wrapped in orange-blue flames, like silk. She smiled, and then dropped her hand. This time not because of the heat but because she was satisfied with her attempt. Again, her eyes found Ara and she waited for anything she had to say. Hopefully, this attempt would make Ara forget the fiasco she did before. After all, it was her first attempt, she was allowed one mistake, right?

Once, every student was done practising, she went to Ara, "Thankyou for taking the time to teach us, you were a solid tutor! Although, it wouldn't hurt to smile a bit. Anyways, I take your leave now. Thanks once again!" And with that she exited the room.

Post: #1 (planning to do more)

Percival listened with full attention as Ara began to speak, wanting to absorb every word. He had been looking forward to this lesson all week, though now that he was standing in front of the dueling mat with three other students, he felt a lot less confident than he had imagined he would. Ara’s tone was calm but she seemed like a no-nonsense type of instructor as well. Though, admittedly, this spell could very easily cause a lot of trouble, so her words of caution were warranted.

The last thing he wanted was to accidentally set his dorm on fire.

Then, watching Ara’s demonstration, he realized just how much control it really took. The way she said the incantation and the exact precision in her wrist movement: it was all equally important to avoid disaster. When the flames finally erupted from her wand and spread across the dummy, he couldn’t help but stare. It was incredible to witness, and he couldn't wait to be able to do it himself.

Percival then took a deep breath and tried to calm himself down to focus. This was exactly the kind of spell he wanted to learn, but he also knew one wrong move could leave him with singed eyebrows or worse.

He stayed near the back of the group while the others took their turns. Karime went first, and he found himself impressed with how steady she seemed. Her flame flared a little bright, but she managed to hold it. Then Violence stepped forward, and though her first attempt nearly got away from her, she recovered on her second attempt. Watching them both only made him more determined to get it right.

When it was his turn, Percival swallowed hard and stepped forward to the mat. He adjusted his grip on his wand and remembered Ara’s words. “Alright,” he said softly to himself, as he lined himself up and tried to stay relaxed. He then lifted his wand and drew the motion she had shown them, but perhaps a little too stiff. “In-SEN-dee-o!”

The incantation came out strong and clear, and for a second, he thought he had done it perfectly. A burst of flame shot from his wand, hitting the dummy square in the chest... but then it split. Instead of forming one steady ribbon of fire, two smaller streams of flame spun off in opposite directions, and he had no idea how to stop them.

“Ah— Wait!” Percival yelped, his heart jumping into his throat. He quickly lowered his wand, staring wide-eyed at the dummy and his surroundings, hoping that the teacher would interfere and help him figure out where that went wrong. During his last Charms class, he had messed up his incantation and caused a little skeleton to kick him. This time, however, he was sure that he had gotten the incantation right.

So what went wrong?

Karime was the first to go, and though she had an unintended flare up of her flame, Ara'd observed how she maintained her concentration. Good reflexes.

She didn’t show any signs of panic -- at least, not the painfully obivious kind. The shaking of her body was very subtle, but she was very quick in regaining her poise. Ara gave a curt nod -- a sort of acknowledgment that said "well done," without words. For her, praise was a fragile currency. A little too much of it would make a person numb.

Then came Violence and Ara thought there would be a moment of hesitation -- but what she got was a question. A very sharp one. Ara had looked at her, raising one eyebrow just a little.

“Ah. you’d think so, right? Magic isn’t polite like that. If your focus wanders, the fire doesn’t just shrug and vanish -- it goes looking for something to obey. Without your attention guiding it, it might decide that your sleeve looks just as interesting as the target. ” she’d replied calmly, voice steady as the embers of her own flame.

"If you'd cast something perfectly but without looking at your target: the spell would be there yet your target won't exactly be the one receiving your flames y'know?"" There was no bite in her tone , just a fact delivered like stone set on stone(maybe a drop of venom but it's just Ara being Ara).

When it was Violence's turn, the beautiful flame had suddenly sprung -- in fact, much too beautiful. The girl's attention wavered. The fire was extinguished in an instant, and a faint gray smoke was rising in the air. She clapped. Once. Twice. One can say it was done mockingly, but too bad, it was for the dramatics.

Ara's mouth barely formed a smile at the apology. “Heat is part of the lesson, it's a fire spell.” she said, almost wryly. “You’ll remember to keep your composure next time. Try to aim a bit faster so the heat won't catch up to ya. Go again.”

And Violence had -- this time, perfectly. Ara watched as the flames wrapped the dummy in silk-like ribbons, blue flickers tracing the edges. Now that was control.

Then came Percival. A quiet one -- looked like the kind who thought too much before acting. Psh. Stereotypical self-concioues 11 year old. Ah, those times. Though it felt like some of her classmates now were stuck in them. She saw it in the way he adjusted his grip three times before even raising his wand. His stance was neat, his pronunciation solid, but his wrist -- too rigid. Man they looked like one of those Barbie dolls with no joints doing that.

The fire split before he could realize what had gone wrong. Ara didn’t flinch. The moment the second strand veered off course, she moved -- a clean, instinctive motion. “Well.” The word was soft but sharp enough to slice through the chaos. Both ribbons of fire vanished instantly, leaving only a faint warmth in the air and Percival’s startled expression.

“Not bad,” she said, turning toward him. Her tone was neither amused nor disappointed -- just "Yep, as expected"

“You said it well. Good posture, pronunciation, somewhat good focus. But your wand arm--” she stepped closer, lowering her own wand to demonstrate -- “was locked. Magic doesn’t flow through tension. You control it by guiding, not forcing. Try again. This time, breathe before you cast. Think of the fire as an extension of your reach, not as a baseball.”

"Remember that feeling. Your magic listens to your breath more than your command.”

Percival sighed, his heart still racing after he had failed at his first attempt to cast the spell. It wasn't unusual for it to take a few tries to learn a spell, but he had hoped his failure had been a little less... spectacular. With eyes on his teacher, he hoped for some pointers and she was quick to offer them.

He listened carefully as she explained, his gaze flicking between her wand and the motion of her wrist as she demonstrated how to fix his mistake. She made it look so effortless and easy with the way she talked about the spell. It made him think back to what Draven had told him about dueling when he had taught him how to cast Flipendo properly.

Once she had finished explaining, he nodded once and spoke,“Okay,” he said, trying to steady himself. “Guide the magic, don't force it...”

When Ara stepped back to let him try again, Percival adjusted his footing. He rolled his shoulders once to shake off some of the tension, then took her advice to heart and focused on breathing. His fingers then relaxed a little around his wand, and he drew the movement she had shown him with more fluidity this time.

“Incendio!” he tried again.

The tip of his wand sparked and a controlled burst of flame erupted forward. It struck the dummy squarely on the chest and lingered there, flickering as the heat came into contact with its body. Percival blinked, almost not believing it. Then, as the realization sank in, a smile spread across his face, “I did it,” he said proudly.

“That felt much better,” he then added “Thank you for helping me. I think I get it now... at least a little.”
