Christmas break was over. In fact, it had been done with for a whole week now. And in some ways, Bridget was glad to be back at Hogwarts. Being here meant she didn't have to constantly fret about ruining her already tenuous relationship with her nonmagical family. Still, even wizard school wasn't fun to return to. The second year was already loaded down by homework and Quidditch practice and all sorts of other worries.

That was where the snow came in. The castle and its sprawling grounds had been blanketed by a peaceful white shroud of snow, a gentle flurry continuing to fall. With the free time the weekend brought, Bridget had decided to venture out into the winter wonderland. There was something about the snow that made her simultaneously feel serene and a like a small child again, bringing back memories of snowball fights with her siblings and building snowmen with her old friends.

The small girl, wrapped tightly in her winter cloak and wearing gloves, a Slytherin scarf, and a Muggle sweater underneath, padded onto the Quidditch Training Pitch, her boots making tracks in the snow. There were more sheltered locations, like the Courtyard, but Bridget wanted a bit of alone time. Sure, it was really cold and the wind stung her nose and she knew her clothes weren't waterproof, but she found herself smiling. This was worth a bit more exposure to the elements. Pushing her thick brown hair out of her face and crouching down, Bridget started packing snow into a ball. Then, she began rolling the ball across the ground, a process anyone who'd ever made a snowman was familiar with. What better than a little reliving of her favorite winter memories?

Alina found herself outside again. She loved the winter weather that much, apparently. Snow blanketed the school grounds, mimicking a cabin escape in the north except that the cabin was replaced by a big ole castle full of mysteries and wonder. Alina didn't feel like being inside it at the moment.

She honestly couldn't to get onto the Quidditch team, Alina knew she was good enough. They needed someone like her who was quicker and stronger than she looked; she could fool the other teams and send a bludger their way!

She was making her way into the field when she noticed fresh footprints in the snow. Alina looked up and immediately caught sight of a figure in the distance. They were crouched down doing something in the snow, possibly making a snowman, but it was hard for her to tell from where she stood. Nevertheless, Alina grinned and happily began crunching her way through the snow.

Minutes later she was nearby the girl. Alina coughed into her fist to make her presence known, if the girl hadn't noticed her already. She waved a little and let out a giggle. “What's it yer doing there?” She noticed the development of a snowball, which she had been rolling around, and nodded. “Mind if I join in? Not much else to do 'round here, 'less you want to get lost in the snow.”

Alina began rolling her own, her small body struggling to find footing in the snow. But that persistent grin remained on her face. “I'm Alina, by the way,” she grunted.

Sorry for the delayed post! :sweatingbullets:
The tiny, average throwing snowball-sized sphere of packed snow quickly grew to a ball nearly her size. This, of course, didn't surprise her in the slightest bit as she was all too used to being small. Familiarity didn't mean it wasn't annoying, though, and straining to roll the ball of snow caused sharp stabs of frustration to poke through her snow-induced calm. Being shorter other kids her age was irritating. Probably qualifying as the worst Beater in Hogwarts history was awful. And failing at constructing a snowball was both maddening and embarrassing, something she didn't want anyone to see.

With yet another futile of effort to move the base of her snowman, Bridget decided it was plenty big enough. How was she even going to hoist the other parts on top? The base wasn't that tall, but it was still of considerable size in comparison to her. She supposed she could use the Levitation Charm, but with that she would risk demolishing the pressed together snow. Now that she had taken a respite from her snowball rolling, her ears could pick up the sound of snow being crunched underfoot. Hopefully whoever it was had missed her snowman-making failure and was going somewhere away from her. The latter hope was dashed mere seconds after she thought it, however, with whoever it was making a coughing noise rather close by.

Somewhat reluctantly, Bridget turned to see who it was. The person was a girl, short like she was, with blonde hair and rather large pea-green eyes. While the girl waved and giggled, Bridget tried to remember where she'd seen her before, knowing she recognized her. And then it clicked into place--she was a Slytherin first year, someone Bridget had seen around the common room.

That fact made Bridget's expression, which had been spiraling into somewhat of a scowl, ease up. The girl was her housemate and a younger one at that, meaning it was pretty much the brunette's job to make her feel welcome. No one had done that for her, after all, and Bridget wasn't sure anyone deserved to have as lonely of a year as she'd had. So even when the girl, who introduced herself as Alina, jumped into the snowman-making without waiting for Bridget's approval, she wasn't mad.

"I'm Bridget. How about you do the midsection and I can do the head," she suggested, packing a new bit of snow into a snowball for the top portion of her snowman. No, their snowman. Today, Bridget was going to be nice, was going to give a younger student the welcome she'd never received.
