After two stages of higher level duels, Pyxis was relieved to get back to basics. He obviously enjoyed watching what his future could look like, and he especially loved dodging Cracker Jinxes and Confringo fire balls, but he was happy to give his brain a break. The upperclassmen employed a multitude of strategies that forced him to pay even stricter attention to the piste than he normally did, and it was definitely taking a toll on the third year. Thankfully, he was assigned to a lower level matchup this year, but he wasn’t about to underestimate them. Pyxis knew, from experience, how detailed the younger years could get with their strategies, and sometimes their aims were truer than the older students’. He may have short-circuited at the sight of Costanza’s name on the schedule, but he adjusted his tie and cleared his throat, stepping up to the piste with utmost professionalism.
“Good morning everyone and welcome to the first day of our stage one duels!” he began with his hands in the air, hyping up the audience. “For this match, we’ve got the Blazing Badgers facing off against the Murder of Merlin. For the Badgers, please welcome Costanza, Minnie, and Alina!” After a brief pause for the Hufflepuffs to show their support, he motioned to the next end of the piste. “And for the Murder, let’s hear it for Maisie, Aislin, and Nicholas!” Beckoning the six duellists closer as the Ravenclaw's cheered, he said, “Alright, I know we have some newbies to the competition here. I hope you’ve all read up on the rules and prepared yourselves accordingly. Now, head back to your corners so we can start this thing.”

What came after Déjà vu? Déjà trois? Maisie resisted the urge to blink several times in surprise at the sight of the same two Hufflepuffs for the third time. She knew how this would go, and it had never been pretty.
But she had two new peers by her side, and while they were younger than her, they seemed both kind and intelligent. Nicholas she recalled from her booth over the summer fair, and Aislin she didn't know well, but had passed her in the common room now and again. "Whatever happens," she told them reassuringly, "don't give up." She'd never ascribed to Mylo's preference for running away and she'd had teammates freeze before on the block. But if there was one thing she knew, confidence was half the battle, even if she struggled to finds her up here. Quickly, she rebraided her hair to side as to steady herself a bit.
Nodding gently to the Hufflepuff team to acknowledge their members, she listened to Pyxis introduce the teams. The Slytherin was unfamiliar to her, but she believed he would be fair. So, she would take her mark and grip her wand tightly as she waited for his signal and all of this would begin.

What was once novel had now become routine for Costanza. Where she used to feel an anxious tightness in her chest at the thought of stepping onto the piste, she now felt composure. Preparing for the duelling stage had become a normal thing for the badger and she found that she no longer hated the slight nerves that came to her the night before. She was ready. She was becoming a duellist. Winning twice in a row did that to a person. She was with Minnie again, but Emily had left the team. It was disappointing news to hear when she returned to school after the summer, but she chose to hope that the new addition, Alina, could pull her weight despite her limited repertoire. Costanza had secretly left a packet of Emergen-C Vitamin C on Minnie and Alina's pillows that morning and she wondered if the witches tried them out or trashed them. Costanza knew she wouldn't trust something that just appeared on her pillow, but she felt compelled to do something to help her team.
"Third time's the charm, right Gemmell?" Costanza had finally learned the eagle's last name after facing her for two matches. The comment was meant to be a jab, but within her there was a sense of injustice. Maisie had lost to her and Minnie twice and her first match of the year was against them again. She felt bad. And then she didn't as she forced herself to stuff that emotion down. The cards simply fell that way and if they were matched against each other, it meant that it was the fairest thing for everyone. And she would not feel bad if she won again.

Nick was very, very nervous. Well, who wouldn't be? In his spot. After all, this was a scary competition to him. Granted, it was also his very first, so every 'scary' knowledge he had of it was passed down by older students who had gone through it before.
"It's fine..." He mumbled to himself while taking a very long deep breath. "Everything will go just...fine..." Hopefully his duel partners knew better what to do than he did. Nick sure needed that confidence they seemed to have.

Oh here we go. Alina thought, twirling her wand around in her hand. It had become a nervous tick of hers. Here we go. Here we go. It isn't real until she steps into the dueling room for the first time. Steps in for real, not the exploration she had done in first year. She can feel hear heart pounding.
She follows in behind Costanza. Gosh I hope I don't bring our team down. Alina straightens her gaze and tightens her expression. Game on.

Contrary to the usual states of duellists pre-duel, the excitement or nervousness or confidence, Aislin was possibly best described as distracted. She was not mentally reviewing her team's strategy (it was well-rooted in her mind, what would be the point?), or double-checking the structural integrity of her ponytail (a few strands had already come loose and would inevitably be in her eyes), or brainstorming quips or encouragements (or insults, if their opponents went that route). Instead, she was watching Pyxis intensely enough that she would summon paper and quill for note-taking if she could, attempting to commit his every move to memory, because Aislin had been a Ravenclaw captain before she'd been a Ravenclaw duellist. The latter was actually a very recent thing, if you were comparing two months to two weeks.
Knowing what to do tomorrow when it was her turn to moderate was important. Not thinking about the legacy of the wand in her hand was also important, because it had been decades since her nan had wielded the length of cherry wood in a duel. Maybe that was long enough for the wand to forget it was used to casting powerful spells? Or maybe it remembered victory so well it would give her a little extra boost today, dragging her along to maintain its streak. Earlier, when she hadn't been ignoring it so well, she'd whispered, "Work with me today, okay?" Not that her wand had listened to that request whenever she tried it before Charms class, but it was good to turn over all potentially lucky stones.
Whatever the case, her single-minded concentration and avoidance meant she missed Nicholas' nerves and Costanza's taunt. She did catch Maisie's encouragement to stick it out, and smiled appreciatively. It was good that at least one of them had done this before, because for all her cramming of duelling spells, it remained a fact that Aislin had not really expected to advance past theoretical duelling scenarios so soon. Team Hufflepuff was just her oblong circles on paper. In practice? A lot less one dimensional and squiggly.

Despite only two spells making it across the piste, the first bout of spell slinging was still engaging enough for gasps to be heard throughout the crowd. Maisie aimed a formidable Disarming Charm at Costanza, perhaps intending to hinder the only person on the piste with foresight. The Ravenclaw’s skill in aim could not be shown however, as Costanza avoided the attack on her wand arm like it was no big deal. Yet, it looked like the badger had put too much focus into evading Maisie’s attack that she let her own cast be neglected. Her attempt at a Dancing-Feet Spell against Maisie shot backwards, forcing her into an stepdance so precise, Pyxis wondered if the girl had ever been on holiday in Ireland.
Both successfully casted spells had originated from the Ravenclaw side; Maisie’s Expelliarmus and now Nicholas’s Tarantallegra. The lad turned his wand on the second year, Alina. Unfortunately for him, the Hufflepuff was already bouncing on the balls of her feet in anticipation. She ducked under Nicholas’ spell, avoiding the same fate as Costanza. Aislin, instead of attacking directly, swirled her wand overhead to produce a rumbling cloud to keep the opposing team on their toes. It was a gamble that paid off when lightning struck down immediately, too quick for Alina to dodge. The scent of singed hair wafted across their corner of the club room and Pyxis brought the sleeve of his robes to his nose.
“C’mon Duke, do something!”

"It's nice to see you too, Costanza," she let out, trying to be as polite as possible. She figured that would annoy the Hufflepuff the most because she knew she was trying to get under her skin. She'd rather focus on her colleagues, who were experiencing their first duel. Aislin was smiling but Nicholas seemed to be mumbling to himself. Frankly, she understood both reactions. At the start of a duel, you were always kind of happy and sad at the same time.
“Go Maisie! You’ve got this!” came a voice from the crowd. Turning her head up, she could see Percy had made it here on time. She waved across at him and let his words of confidence wash over her. After feeling alone on the block so many times, it was nice to know someone was here to bolster her. She'd carry his words with her moving forward.
Her Expelliarmus was well cast, but it was weird. It was almost like Costanza knew it was coming before it ever left her wand. Meanwhile, Aislin and Nicholas both got off successful casts, but the latter missed its mark. But the lightning sure didn't. And Costanza of all people managed to mess up her spell, causing her to dance. Sweet karma.
All unscathed, Ravenclaw was still in this.

Nicholas was so nervous about his first cast, yet, a wave of relief had hit his chest when he managed to cast it correctly. He already had half the mind that he wasn't going to be able to without stuttering.
"Oh bloody..." He mumbled to himself when his opponent dodged the spell, he grimaced and gritted his teeth. "Well, that was a blow.."
