Stunned, Oakley watched as the ginger swung open the door and swept outside, chuckling. The door slammed shut. He heard the boy smugly laughing as he went down the spiraling stairs
He stood there, staring at the broom in his hands. Oh well. There was nothing to it, he'd have to make another book.
Oh, who was he kidding? That one took Oakley hours and hours of painstaking research and copying. It was fully annotated. It was precious. He had to go after it.
Plus, stealing was against the school rules, he didn't need his book to look that up.
And here he was, wasting precious time, gazing at the broom that the boy left in his hands. He dropped it and dully heard it clatter to the floor, but he didn't care. He was already slinging his bag around his shoulders, glancing back to double check that he had properly taken care of the high-grade school telescopes. Oakley pulled open the heavy wooden door and rushed outside, determined to catch the Slytherin who had robbed him of his rulebook, leaving the cursed broom behind. He ran down the steps, resolve etched on every inch of his face.
He then tripped on his shoelace.

Jack, who'd had no idea that Oakley had made the book himself, might have behaved otherwise if he had known. After all, he himself spent hours and hours annotating his own textbooks, particularly the history ones, since History was his favorite subject. He knew how precious such books could be. But he was also still curious as to why Oakley had it and figured the easiest way to find out was to get the Ravenclaw to tell him himself.

He lingered in the stairwell of the tower, waiting for the other boy to come after him. It took him a little longer than he expected (due to Oakley taking some time to come to a realization, checking to make sure he had everything, and looking back to be certain that the telescopes were properly put away), but when the other boy did, he seemed to be in quite a hurry. Such a hurry, in fact, that he ran down the stairs and tripped on his shoelace in his haste.

Hazel eyes widening, Jack dropped the book in his hands and maneuvered to try to catch Oakley if he could, attempting to keep him from taking a nasty tumble down the stairs. After all, it was a long way down, and the stone tower with its sharp, hard steps wasn't the most comfortable of places to fall.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa, easy, there!" he yelled, trying to stop their momentum from taking them both down as he pressed his peer against the wall. "I thought Ravenclaws were supposed to be smart. You almost died," Jack said, glancing down at the brunet's shoes to see if the laces were tied. "For a book. What do you have to say for yourself?"

He felt the shoelace draw taut, and his heart skipped a beat. This was it, he thought. This was how he died. Falling down the stairs in pursuit of a lowly book. A book he treasured, sure, but in the end, it was just a book. What a pitiful way to go. He had so many things he had wanted to do. Finish up the lego set in his trunk, for example. Why didn't he just write another book? He could have avoided this whole mess.
These thoughts circled around and around in Oakley's head a million times in the moment he was falling.
Then he was caught. That was unexpected, although greatly appreciated.
The Slytherin who had stolen his book in the first place had stopped him from dying an untimely death. His heart pounding from the adrenaline rush, he was basically thrown against the opposite wall, far away from the steep, stone stairs. Oakley leaned against the wall. He felt like he was going to be sick.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, easy, there!" the boy shouted, "I thought Ravenclaws were supposed to be smart. You almost died for a book. What do you have to say for yourself?"
Still in a state of shock, Oakley was brought to attention. Wheezing, he responded in short clips. "Made book. Took long time," he gasped, "Precious."

At the brunet's stunted phrases, Jack blinked at him a moment, then laughed. "Why didn't you just say so in the first place? Like when I asked you where you got it from?" Once he was sure the other boy was steady enough to stand on his own, he walked a few steps down to where the book had fallen when he'd dropped it and dusted it off. Examining it once more as he walked back toward his peer, Jack smiled and held it out to its proper owner and creator.

"Nice book. Well-made. I'm still surprised you had enough dedication and devotion to the rules to create your very own rulebook, though." Patting the boy on the shoulder with his free hand, he said, "You have my admiration. Anyway, Rule-stickler, I guess we'd better get back to our dorms soon if we're going to make it before curfew, huh?" Grinning, he turned to go once more.

"Take care. That includes making sure laces are short enough to not be tripped on, being cautious around stairs, and not dying for a book, no matter how precious. Your life is worth more." He held up a hand in farewell. "See you around. Nice to know who to come to if I need to check whether or not something's against school rules..."

The redhead's laughter echoed through the narrow stairwell, following him as he made his way back down.
