I got you. When someone asks what part of NY are you from, (generally asking the city) you gotta say one of the five areas: Bronx, Manhatten, Queens, Brooklyn, or Staten Island. The five got a pretty long history of rivalry so New Yorkers typically rep their borough loud and proud.

It's hilarious because even people that live there for as little as six months fall deep into that culture.

Not really. But a lot of New York folk test you when you claim to be from NYC because they're bullies New Yorkers have a weird pride. My cousin interned there for a month and swears he reps the Bronx. (Mans been living in Illinois his whole life )
