"The Whomping Willow can't catch a break today. The old lass hasn't hit a single racer that has landed in her crosshairs." Beyond that, Miss Cazares gets lost in the fog, taking more than a few precious moments to escape.

But the real race is happening near the giant squid. Formally the frontrunner, Miss Riddle is struggling against a large tentacle as Mr. White, Miss Towers, and Mr. Lansdale arrive. "Miss Riddle is free! She didn't let the squid bring her down today! She's followed closely by three other racers that make avoiding the squid look easy. Oh! But the waterfall has her. Miss Riddle is down. And so is her teammate, Mr. Lansdale. That leaves Mr. White and Miss Towers in the lead!"

At least escaping the squid didn't take too much out of Koko, if you didn't count aggravated mumbles and eye-rolls. She remounted her broom and flew on, casting a glare back at the stupid squid. At least Quidditch didn't have fucking animals. Well, at least, that she was aware of – it wasn't like she'd ever witnessed a bird strike.

However, whatever victory she felt was short-lived, as water tumbling over her made her lose her grip on her broom. 'Seriously!?' Koko huffed, bringing a hand up to her now-drenched hair. She wished she had a compact mirror with her so she could make sure her mascara wasn't running, but she had not been smart enough to remember one. She did her best to push her bangs back and sighed, scowling as she stared with narrowed eyes at the rushing water. Quidditch, the superior broom sport, didn't have water! Not unless it was raining! Which was completely and utterly normal.

At least this time she wasn't the only person who had been done in by the obstacle. Sadly, the other victim was one of her teammates. 'Well, hello there,' she said drily, offering Galton a wry smile. 'I'd ask how you're doing, but I fear the answer would just be "wet".' She wasn't one for sugarcoating things, but having been Slytherin's Quidditch co-captain, she was one for pep talks. 'Don't let it get you down. It's horrible, and very annoying, but victory's still in sight.'

The fog? The fog was respite. She could catch her breath while it was still thick enough to embrace- force down some of the saliva stinging under her tongue. She leaned forward, her elbows propped on Delta's narrow ivory frame, with her forehead resting on the knuckles of her balled hands, and let out a strained sigh. The damp grey cloud cloaked her well, and she was certain she had a few seconds of solitude before another racer caught up.

In all her years of racing- which was five, to be exact- Xailah had never had to voluntarily stop on a track. Involuntary stops were a guaranteed occurrence; everything and everyone on the path to the finish were either designed or encouraged to stall passerby. There was something sobering about stopping on her own accord, though. It forced her to consider how to proceed, and if doing so was worth risking further fatigue for. With a little care, I can go a little further, she concluded before straightening and wiping her goggles of dew.

Her decision was made just as the fog parted, signaling the passing of another racer. The pantheress stealthily followed their greyed silhouette, until she was able to slip around them and exit the lingering haze, where she was then funnel into a tight squeeze of a passageway. She'd manage it with minimal damage, only to be pushed into a disgusting dry heat.

As she caught up to some of the other racers; a new challenger grew on the horizon: the giant squid- spied just in time to see its gargantuan tentacles slide back under the glistening body of water that contained it.

Howard had come to the realization that anyone willing to play quidditch was a bit mad. How many times had he and his teammates been knocked unconscious or left the pitch with broken bones?! The thought of a bludger from Erin still haunted his dreams from time to time. Anytime he heard a cracking noise his head would swivel looking for a beater. Yes, they were mad to put themselves through this all in the name of winning a broom sport and that made you just a little bit crazy. However, broom racers might just take the cake in the wacky department.

What a crazy thing they were doing just for fun. Howard had escaped spell, bounced of trees, just narrowly gotten away from being barbecued and that wasn't even the worst of it. His eyes narrowed on the obstacle ahead and with a gulp he propelled himself forward. The only thing in his way was just a giant squid hellbent on squeezing the life out of him. What could go wrong? With a quick prayer to Merlin, Howard zoomed ahead and barrel rolled just out of the creatures reach. Thank the broom gods he had made it past that.

The thanks would soon dissipate and a near impenetrable wall of water came next. How the hell did you get past this? Howard had no choice but to lay flat on the broom and hold on with all his might. He was now soaking wet with water in his ears, but somehow he had made it through. Surely that was the lat of it....

Bridget was back to the balance of broomwork and spellwork, relying on rusty muscle memory to carry her flight for at least as long as she needed to aim her wand and concentrate on incantations. She had Ruby in her sights, a potential target where usually she was a teammate, but casting at old teammates was all in today's good spirit of competition. It would be more of an insult to pretend Ruby wasn't talented and well worth the time it took Bridget to cast Depulso, uninterested in causing her harm but fully intending to drag her back a good distance. Unfortunately, the widening gap between them and Ruby's own maneuvering resulted in a miss, Bridget's spell vanishing into the trees.

She was starting to feel a bit behind the actual race, between being unseated from her broom at kickoff and the way casting slowed her pace, but she'd finally reached her first real piece of the track's action. Drifting into reach of the Whomping Willow's branches, she kept her eyes up and warily tracking any branches that came near, pulling her broom through quicker and sharper movements. She looked away only long enough to confirm what had been announced: Ami was back up, looking well enough to remount her broom, the results of a smart move by Cyrus. The American was still mostly an unknown, but she didn't need extensive knowledge to appreciate the move. To Ami, she tossed a quick, "Good to have you back," over her shoulder, keeping most of her focus on the swinging limbs.

Galton would receive no reply from Serena as they zoomed forward on matching brooms. He was a little disappointed in her refusal to banter. While he was not a particular chatterbox when it came to piste-side discussion, a few words here and there always added a bit of fun. But it seemed that Serena was a serious one - so focused on the race at hand that she couldn't spare any thoughts on Galton.

So the two would continue on in silence. With the speed they were traveling at, it may have been a good thing even. Whatever minor qualms Galton had about being ignored were forgotten the second he saw the giant squid ahead. They did not have anything like that in dueling. Children were allowed to race? Dueling had a note of brutality to it - but that was a rather controlled sport. Letting a giant squid loose on the track felt like quite the opposite.

As his mind wrestled with the horrors of children being caught up in this sport, his attention turned to the very real possibility of him being caught up by the squid. It was a possibility he did not like. As he watched Koko free herself he came to the conclusion that he would probably not be able to do the same. He dedicated so much of his attention to not getting caught by the horrifying beast that he didn't see the waterfall he was speeding towards.

Wet and broomless, Koko's words of encouragement were refreshing. More refreshing than the shower he'd just had. "I won't let it - or, I won't let it get me down more than -" Galton would point to where they were currently. "- you know, the whole back down to ground thing. And that squid looked truly horrible. I'll take a rough bath over that any day. He'd take a sec to look around before formulating a plan. "Good job getting away from it by the way. Let's not let victory do the same.

If looks could kill, Galton would find himself falling to his demise as Serena narrowed her eyes at him as he appeared out of nowhere beside her. Okay, not from nowhere. From the sky above her. She quite liked Galton and though she had never seen him fly a broom in a sport (nor did she know if he even could fly until today), she had no way of communicating back with her jaw bound shut. That was not his fault - he might not have even realised his teammate was a cheater! Nonetheless, she shot him a look as she could not say anything!

How was she going to tell him that she would beat him? That this wasn't duelling, where he had a clear advantage over her! She couldn't even smile at him to say hi! A low 'mmmhmmmmm' could be heard as she tried to open her mouth but failed to do so. Serena wondered what he actually did now - she had kind of forgotten that he had graduated with Hugh! Then again - where was Hugh?! Why was he not here?! The reunion was a great time to meet, she had kind of assumed he would have been here but perhaps she ought to have asked!

Serena flew ahead, easily escaping the rather large squid that she had come to like over the years and braced herself for the waterfall ahead. She hated waterfalls. But after literal years of practice, she had clenched her jaw and flew straight through it, holding on like there was no tomorrow. She unclenched with reflief as she managed to pass it, and spotted Howard besides her. Wait - where did Galton go?!
