Rosaline was fully awake now, and her schoolbag was on her shoulder, ready to set off. She was amused by the little skit Frederick and she had played. It was her first time truly goofing around with other people. She was actually quite playful by nature, but since arriving at Hogwarts, she hadn’t really managed to let her hair down yet. Except perhaps in the dorm with Lucille, which had become her comfort place.

“By all means, let’s go.” She grinned brightly at Frederick and followed him outside the common room. The Fat Lady didn’t seem bothered by them at all, still having her morning tea. She held tight to the strap of her schoolbag, trotted to the front of Frederick, and turned around with her hair fluttering in the air. “Yes, I guess we should hurry too.”

Frederick and Rosaline hurried down the stairs. Fortunately, they didn’t encounter any turning staircases. They finally reached the corridor where the History of Magic classroom was located. She stopped and caught her breath for a while. Her face was flushed from the sprint. Realizing she hadn’t answered Frederick’s questions, she said with a sheepish smile, “Oh my, I forgot to answer you. Yeah, you can say that. I woke up way too early today. I thought I could study a little, but I totally fell asleep, and you know the rest.” She joked, “If I slept a little more, I’m afraid I’d definitely drool on the book.” Amused by that thought, she chuckled.

She was grateful for Frederick’s kindness; knowing he had been in a hurry earlier made her feel less nervous about being late. They kept chatting as they walked. Rosaline pushed open the door, finding the classroom was already filled with students, nearly to capacity. There were two seats left in the corner of the classroom. Rosaline pointed to those seats and asked, “Should we go sit there?” She spoke the next sentence with a low voice and a mischievous smile, “If I fall asleep again, then the Professor won’t find me.”

Frederick jogged after her through the portrait hole, the flap of his robes catching against his legs as they both took off down the staircase. The air in the corridors was cool and smelled faintly of wax and stone dust, the echoes of their footsteps bouncing around the high ceilings. Fred felt his heart race, not just from the sprint, but from the thrill of running through the castle with someone else who seemed to enjoy it as much as he did.

When Rosaline spun around mid-run, her hair flying as she grinned at him, Fred barked a laugh, nearly tripping over his own shoelace. “Oi, don’t distract me or I’ll end up tumbling down the stairs. Then you’ll really be late, dragging me to the hospital wing.” He clutched his bag tighter against his side as they rushed through another corridor, dodging a pair of second-years who shot them disapproving looks.

By the time they reached the right floor, Fred’s breathing was uneven, and he swiped his hair from his forehead with the back of his hand. Rosaline admitted she had woken up far too early, and Fred gave a sympathetic nod, still catching his breath. “So that’s why you looked ready to nap on the book,” he said with a crooked grin. “Can’t blame you, though, drooling on it might’ve actually made the text more exciting. At least it would add a bit of mystery to the page.” His laugh came out rough from the sprint, but warm.

They rounded the last corner, and the murmur of voices grew louder. Fred’s stomach sank a little at the thought of slipping into the classroom late, but the sight of Rosaline chuckling beside him eased it. At least we’ll face it together, he thought.

Inside, the classroom was already crowded, the air thick with parchment and ink. Students hunched over desks, whispering before class began. Fred spotted the two seats Rosaline pointed out and smirked at her whispered remark. “Brilliant plan. If you nod off, I’ll give you a nudge. And if I do, you better cover for me.” He tilted his head conspiratorially, lowering his voice. “Say I was just… uh, deeply meditating on goblin rebellions.”

Without further hesitation, he shuffled toward the corner, weaving between desks until he dropped into the seat with a relieved thump, his bag landing at his feet. To Fred’s surprise, as the adrenaline faded, he finally noticed that the professor had not yet arrived and that, strangely, there was a gramophone playing a song he didn’t recognize, but one that gave the class, which he had so often heard was boring, a rather unexpected turn.

The classroom was already filled with first years, and the chatter and the smell of old books were in the air. Frederick’s earlier words had calmed Rosaline’s nerves. With a barely audible sigh, she summoned her energy to face the History of Magic. Looking around, she saw the professor hadn’t shown up yet, so it meant they were not late at all. It was almost a miracle, she thought, perhaps the castle had secretly decided to be kind to them for once.

Frederick agreed with her seat choice and made a plan in case either of them fell asleep. Then another thought occurred to her. “I’ll certainly cover you. But what if we both fall asleep?” she chuckled softly, amused by Frederick’s joke. Though Rosaline wasn’t particularly good at getting up to mischief, she would be more playful around people who gave off that kind of energy.

They made their way to the empty seats Rosaline had picked. She sat down lightly, placing her school bag upon her lap. After taking out her fountain pens, textbook, and notebook, she set her school bag down on the floor. Considering the amount of notes she might take in this class, she chose the stationery that didn’t require constantly dipping into the inkwell. Leaning back slightly in the chair, Rosaline quietly observed the classroom. This was one of the reasons she liked the corner seats; it wasn’t too cramped or too far from the front, and she got to do some people-watching.

There was a brief moment of silence, and Rosaline thought of the first journey they took on the Hogwarts Express. Wondering if Frederick was still in touch with the other first years who were also in the compartment with them, she asked, “Frederick, have you met other people in our carriage after the first day? I think I have only met Camille ever since. I wonder how they are doing?” Her eyes sparkled with curiosity. She thought that Frederick seemed more extroverted than she was; he might well be in contact with them.

She straightened her posture as she noticed the music playing in the classroom. Tucking a strand of her brown hair, she tilted her head and listened carefully. It was a song that sounded vaguely familiar to her, yet she was sure this song wasn’t from her time; it might be from her dad’s time. “Don’t you think this song is familiar…” Before she could finish her sentence, the professor showed up dancing. Rosaline’s eyes widened in surprise because she never thought the History of Magic would start like this. Although she did like the subject and didn’t think it was boring to study, she still didn’t expect the class would incorporate pop music.

The moment Professor Break uttered the song’s title, she immediately understood why it had been played. The class today must be related to the ancient civilizations. She recalled from the materials she read before she fell asleep during her early-morning study session.

The music that filled the classroom with rhythm and an unexpectedly cheerful atmosphere was unfamiliar to Frederick. Still, as he bent over to reach A History of Magic inside his bag by his feet, he couldn’t help a small approving smile at the sound echoing from the gramophone. He placed the book neatly on the desk, brushing off a bit of dust from the worn cover, and looked around the room.

Frederick reached for his bag again, this time pulling out materials far simpler than Rosaline’s, just an ink bottle, a quill, and a few pieces of parchment folded unevenly at the edges. Did my school supply list come different from hers? he wondered. He arranged the items on the table with little care, the quill rolling slightly to the side before he caught it. “You’re really well-prepared,” he said, glancing at her neatly arranged pens and notebooks. “Those fountain pens look impressive." He studied her setup with genuine curiosity.

Most of the students in the room sat in pairs, and only two were alone, something Frederick noticed quickly, out of instinct rather than interest. The low murmur of voices filled the space, carrying an energy that was bound to spill into full-blown chatter if the professor didn’t arrive soon. He figured it was the music’s fault, and though he liked it, he still couldn’t guess why anyone would start a History of Magic lesson this way.

For the pair of Rosaline and Frederick, things weren’t much different. After a brief pause, her voice caught his attention again with the question, “Have you met other people in our carriage after the first day?” Instantly, the memory of the Hogwarts Express compartment came to him, the faces, laughter, and the excitement of that first journey. While she spoke, he shook his head lightly. “Not yet,” he replied. “They all went to other houses, didn’t they? Funny you ran into Camille, he didn’t exactly strike me as…” Frederick paused, searching for the right word. “...Sociable,” he finished with a crooked grin.

“But I’ve met a few others. One of my roommates, Marcus, and a girl from our house, Lucille, and another…” Before he could continue listing the people he’d met in his first week at the castle, the History of Magic professor entered the classroom dancing, and Frederick froze mid-sentence, his expression caught somewhere between shock and amusement. He loved absurd situations, especially funny ones. And this one? This one was perfect.

Professor Elmo Break looked entirely unbothered by the stares and gasps, his robes swaying to the beat as he asked the class, “So tell me, why would I play Walk Like an Egyptian?” revealing the song’s name to Frederick. Some students seemed to know it, others, like him, were hearing it for the first time. His gaze was fixed on the professor, but out of the corner of his eye, he thought he saw Rosaline perk up, as if she might already know the answer.

Soon, the professor began rummaging through his drawers, pulling out a thick pile of papers and dividing them into three. “Merlin’s beard…” Frederick muttered under his breath, realizing how much work they were probably in for. When his name was called, one of the first, since Buckley always placed him near the top of every list, he stood quietly, collected his set of pages, and returned to his seat beside Rosaline.

He flipped through them briefly, the parchment crackling faintly. None of it looked particularly exciting. “Do you think you’re going to like this class?” he asked her, glancing sideways, his tone light but curious. As he spoke, his quill twirled absentmindedly between his fingers. Despite the casual question, he genuinely wondered whether History of Magic could surprise them again.

Rosaline watched as Fred took out his stationery, an ink bottle, a quill, and some parchment. They were far simpler than hers, but she liked the neatness they hinted at. Fred made a remark about her supplies. She returned a gentle smile to him and said, “I think yours are more efficient than mine. I always bring too many things, so my bag is as heavy as a rock.” Lifting her school bag from the ground, she chuckled. “I love these pens. They can make the note-taking process smoother. I fear we’ll have to take a lot of notes today, so I brought them.” She glanced around, observing other students’ stationery, mostly quills and ink bottles; a few of them brought some Muggle stationery. She wondered whether students from Muggle family backgrounds would be used to the quill and ink. The thought made her muse and drift off for a moment. Probably, she could learn more if she were able to take Muggle Studies someday.

The room was filled with excitement and a hint of curiosity from every first-year student. Rosaline felt quite relieved that they shared the same emotion with her. It seemed it was time to start the class. She seized the moment to chat a bit more with Fred. The question she had asked was a topic she was really interested in. Fred’s answer surprised her. But other than two of them, Camille, Maisie, and Seraphina were all in other houses, and there were only a few days after they had been parted, so it was natural that Fred hadn’t met them again yet. She chuckled a little at Fred’s comment and said, “He was actually quite nice. I was lost because of the moving staircases last week before Potions, and I met him. He is good company, and we made our way to the classroom in the end.” The memory of the little adventure was fun to think of, but she hoped she wouldn’t be lost again in the future.

As soon as Fred said Lucille’s name, she beamed, “I know Lucille, too! She is my roommate.” Her whole expression brightened. The memories she had with Lucille were all good and joyful to her. “I met her at Diagon Alley. It’s so interesting that our moms know each other,” she propped her chin on her hand, her posture more loosened now. “How did you two meet?” she asked with a light tone. After that, she found she hadn’t asked about Fred’s roommate. “I feel I might have heard this name before in other classes, but I’m not too sure. If there’s a chance, we four should meet someday.” She grinned. Finishing her sentence, she found she might ramble too much again. Her face flushed a little. Though she didn’t think Fred would mind this, she still had self-awareness.

Just as she finished all her proposal and questions, a man who seemed to be the professor of this class walked into the classroom. Not exactly walking, but rather it should be called dancing into the classroom. Fred looked as impressed as she was. He even marveled to mutter a sentence, but she didn’t hear it clearly. Rosaline focused on Professor Break’s question and had an answer already. Yet other students were too fast; she couldn’t raise her hand quickly enough. She knew the early morning studying session worked out, though only the first half of it.

Toying with her necklace, she saw Professor Break go to the desk and pull out a large stack of materials for them. Her eyes widened. She loved reading, but all these for a first lesson was still a little too much for the young girl. Fred was called quite quickly and was back with thick papers. She glanced at the stack and wondered how long it would take her to read through all. Students went up to get their materials one by one. She was called pretty early because she was an Everhart. Taking the materials with both hands, she thanked the professor. Back in her seat, she leafed through the pages, excited to see what she would learn. Fred asked, “Do you think you’re going to like this class?” She replied without hesitation, “I think I’ll definitely enjoy it. I learn the Muggle side of history in my old school, so I’m curious what Professor Break will teach us.”

While they waited for the professor to arrive, Frederick kept chatting with Rosaline in a relaxed, easy manner. Ever since the day they had met on their first train ride to Hogwarts back in September, the two of them had gotten along remarkably well, and Fred felt that conversations between them always seemed to flow naturally and effortlessly. Of course, his own personality contributed to that, he was talkative by nature, but to Fred, who was just starting to get to know her better, Rosaline seemed to share a bit of that same quality, and he thought that was great.

Fred let out a brief laugh when he discovered that Rosaline had gotten lost because of the moving staircases. “Those staircases…” His laugh came partly from finding the situation amusing, but also because the exact same thing had happened to him. Fred had the distinct feeling that this would happen to them many more times throughout the year, at least until they became familiar with all the paths within the massive labyrinth that was the castle. Still, he didn’t have time to let his thoughts drift too far in that direction, because as soon as he mentioned Lucille, Rosaline suddenly perked up with unexpected enthusiasm, almost making him jump in his seat.

Hearing the brief summary of how the two girls had met, he nodded in agreement. “What a coincidence. Your mothers know each other, and now you and Lucille are roommates? That’s a lot of coincidence.” Fred repeated, momentarily imagining the two girls chatting nonstop in their dormitory and accepting that image as absolute truth. He also found it quite a coincidence that Rosaline, who was becoming his friend, was also friends with Lucille, the girl who, stubbornly, seemed unable to leave his thoughts ever since he met her.

He kept that last part to himself, unsure of how he actually felt. When Rosaline asked how he and Lucille had met, he had the impression the girls hadn’t talked about it yet, since Rosaline’s tone was genuinely light, with no hint that she already knew the answer. “We met on a weekend, out on the castle grounds.” And that was all Fred was willing, or able, to give at the moment. Eleven-year-old boys were not particularly skilled in recounting details, and he was no exception, but perhaps with time, as he and Rosaline became better friends, that might change.

Even though he wasn’t quite sure how to express his own feelings, he couldn’t help showing a spark of excitement at her suggestion. Making plans for all of them to meet and spend more time together definitely sounded like a great idea. “For sure! I can call Marcus, and you can call Lucille, how about that?” he suggested brightly. With that surge of enthusiasm, Frederick was ready to continue the conversation and the planning, but the professor soon arrived and the lesson began, shifting his attention to the teacher and the start of class.

After collecting his new material from the professor’s desk and returning to his seat, Frederick spaced out the small comments he exchanged with Rosaline, since he didn’t want to get called out on the very first lesson. Still, his restless nature didn’t allow him to stay quiet for long. Picking up the topic he had started earlier, and while examining the first ten pages the professor had assigned on Ancient Mesopotamia, he went back to whispering, keeping his voice low and avoiding looking directly at Rosaline so it wouldn’t seem too obvious. “Yeah, I’m curious too. I think it might actually be pretty cool. Look at these drawings.” He pointed the sketches of what buildings and temples looked like in Mesopotamia, while rearing the explanations about life in that distant time.

The classroom fell silent when every student concentrated on their heavy materials. After Rosaline finished her rough reading, she observed around the room, seeing some of them had dull eyes and dozed off; they probably got bored by all the materials. Although she thought that the content was interesting, others might not have the same feeling. She thumbed through the whole pages, feeling the slight stir of air on her hand.

Rosaline and Frederick continued their chatting. The smooth conversation reminded her of their first meeting on the train ride. It was a full compartment; everyone was a fresh face to her. Back then, she wasn’t sure what house she’d be sorted into, yet Frederick was very confident about it. He really suited Gryffindor, as they chatted, Rosaline couldn’t help but think of this. What about her? She was still not sure about it. A slight concern appeared on her face, but it quickly faded away.

Frederick seemed to be able to relate to her experience with that moving staircase. This made her feel a little relieved. It probably was a common trouble in the first year. She surely hoped she would be more familiar with the whole castle. Frederick’s remark about her connection with Lucille was quite interesting, making her giggle a little. “We even share a similar name, resembling the rose and heart,” she replied with a grin. Then she added, “I hope we can be good friends. She is really sweet. I like her a lot.” Rosaline said the compliment about Lucille, flushing a little rosy pink because she accidentally blurted her thoughts out.

As Rosaline heard Frederick share the first meeting he and Lucille had, she mindlessly opened her notebook to a blank page. The explanation of the meeting was very simple. Maybe it was a simple meeting. “That sounds pretty fun,” she said, giving Frederick a small smile. Speaking of the school grounds, her thoughts drifted toward them. She should go there and have a picnic someday. After hearing Rosaline’s proposal, Frederick agreed and offered a suggestion that they could call their roommate for a hangout. “Of course. It’s a great plan,” she said with her eyes lighting up.

Their chatting momentarily stopped because the Professor started lecturing. Frederick restarted the conversation with a comment about the class materials. Rosaline leaned her head in his direction and replied in a low voice, “Those drawings are so cool. I’m sure we can have a fun lesson.” Rosaline noticed the Professor began to explain life in Ancient Mesopotamia. It was a topic she was interested in, so she shifted her focus to the lecture.
