What the fuck am I doing... Zion thought to himself as he stood by the entrance of the Great Hall with an almost irritated look on his face.
In his arms was a brown classic tabby that seemed to be having a hard time figuring out if it was comfortable or uncomfortable. Zion didn't know anyone outside of Hogwarts that owned a cat, nor had he ever interacted with one directly. He was cradling the poor feline like a new born baby, belly side up, while all four of its legs were stiff and stretched towards the ceiling. Both the cat and human were experiencing something they had never experienced before.
The two made awkward eye contact as the tabby let out an ambiguous meow.
"You're a pain in the ass. You know that?" Zion quipped at the cat, his eyes and protective body language contradicting his annoyed tone.
Zion sighed, "Man, how the hell did I get here..."

Seeking to find the tabby's owner, Zion had spent the past hour chasing the brown menace, until a balled up assignment dropped from his pocket onto the floor (homework he had gotten back). The cat showed great interest in the paper ball, which allowed Zion to pick him up successfully. Flashback:
Zion cruised through the many displays in the Trophy Room. Before Hogwarts, he wanted to be a pro basketball player in the NBA.
Now, he was at a school where very few students even understood the concept of basketball. Without other skilled basketball players to compete with and sharpen his skills, Zion understood that his NBA dreams were now out of the question. Perhaps this room of achievements would inspire him to start a new path.
As he was casually strolling in the room, a little sound caught Zion's attention.
Meow.
Zion turned around to see the brown tabby crawling from behind a display. "How the hell did you get in here?" Zion exclaimed as he looked at the cat.
The brown tabby meowed again.
Zion scratched his head. "You're a little far from the dorms now, ain't you?"
The two stood there staring at each other silently for about five seconds until Zion began walking away.
"Oh, well. I'm sure you'll find your way home one way or another."
On his way out, the cat meowed again, this time with a tone of sadness and longing. The sound of the poor tabby stopped Zion right on his tracks.
His back still facing the tabby, Zion sighed while palming his face.

Zion took out the ball of scrunched up parchment from his pocket and placed it between the two stiff front legs of the tabby. Its legs quickly unstiffened as it playfully played with the temporary toy in Zion's arms.
"Alright. Lock in. Back to business," Zion said to himself.
Scanning the Great Hall, Zion covered the cat's ears with his hand as he yelled out across the Great Hall, in an irritated almost aggressive voice.
"AYO! WHO CAT IS THIS?"

✽Avery sighed loudly as she made her way down the stairs and towards the Great Hall for breakfast. Her cat, Jasper, had run away again that morning. Something that was becoming even more of an occurrence since he had been forced to part with his brother, Alaska, when Dylan and his mother left for America. Avery almost felt bad for her cat. Jasper had become close to Alaska over the summer, and was probably looking for his brother even though they were an ocean apart.
Avery understood that feeling. Though Dylan was only her cousin, he was more like a brother to her than anyone had ever been. He had always been there in the hard times, but she knew he couldn't stay with her forever. He still lived in America. A place that felt worlds apart from Hogwarts in the Scottish Highlands.
Avery rubbed her hand across her face as she finally approached the Great Hall. Unsure of where her cat could've gone. He had a way of showing up at the oddest of times such as when she was about to fall asleep or trying to work on homework late at night.
That's when she heard the voice. A loud, almost irritated shout that rang through the halls as well as the Great Hall. She wouldn't be surprised if the room had gone silent and everyone had turned to look at who shouted. It was the kind of thing that made everyone stand at attention.
She slipped in unnoticed easily as the chatter from the hall came back. With a quick glance she hadn't realized the cat the young first year was holding until she did a double take. Jasper. Brown tabby stripes and everything clutched in the boy's arms with a malicious look on his face.
Avery quickly walked over to where the first year was standing. "Hi, I'm Avery, and I believe you've found my cat." Avery said with a smile as she took Jasper from the boy's arms and held him tightly against her chest. She knew all too well that soon enough he would do exactly the opposite of what she wanted. She had learned from enough failed attempts that if she didn't hold him tightly chaos would likely unfold. ✽

"Zion Davis," the boy replied simply to the pretty faced girl, as she was reunited with her furry companion. "Hope I wasn't givin it scoliosis by the way I was holdin it."
As the handoff commenced, the paper ball rolled down to the ground silently.
As Avery held on to her tabby tightly, Zion noticed the subtle resistance from the little one. A flash of irritation gave his face a visit as he remembered the hour-long endeavor he had just gone through in catching the elusive milk-drinker.
Not wanting the Gryffindor girl to have to catch the brown menace again, Zion quickly picked up his old assignment from the ground and placed it over the tabby's head. The whiskered troublemaker relaxed just a bit to play with it again.
"You real high maintenance, you spoiled lil shit," Zion grumbled as he affectionately scratched behind the tabby's ears.
The boy quickly turned his face to the brown haired second-year. "Uh. Sorry. I needa stop fuckin cussin," he said, rubbing the back of his head.
The boy turned his attention to the cat once more as the rambunctious house pet relentlessly clawed at the paper ball.
"Lil furball got a name?" Zion asked.
For some reason Zion could not get himself to walk away from the cat. What was the reason? Zion didn't even like cats. He was more of a dog person. But this particular little kitty seemed to be tugging at his conscious. It was almost like they shared something in common.
The Detroit native tilted his head slightly at the tabby.
The furball slapped the paper ball a little too hard as it launched sideways. Zion quickly caught it, without missing a beat, and gave it back to the cat.

✽Avery shrugged before saying, "Don't worry. He'll be fine. A little tight holding every once in a while won't hurt him. He has a bit of a wild spirit." Avery laughed.
Avery knew when Jasper began to get wiggly that he was about to pull another one of his many stunts. Avery was just glad this time the paper ball was there to distract him. She wasn't a fan of trying to run for the safety of her dorm just to keep him occupied so she could attend classes in peace. Taking him to her dorm now would just mean she would have to skip breakfast. Not a good idea.
Avery didn't really know what cussing meant. She guessed it was probably a muggle kind of saying or something her parents had never brought up since she had never heard the word. Before she could think deeper into what it could mean, the boy asked if her cat had a name.
"Yeah. His name's Jasper." Avery responded as she lifted one hand and scratched his chin. Happy to hear the purrs vibrating her palm. That was a good sign. That meant that maybe he wasn't going to attack her in an attempt to escape. ✽

"Jasper..." Zion repeated softly. "Jasper... I think that was Mama's favorite blood-sucker in one of dem gross vampire movies. What was it called again? Twilight?"
He observed the little Jasper for a brief moment. The way it was purring in Avery's hand. The way it was looking for an opportunity to bolt. The way it occasionally looked at him with a curious head tilt.
The boy then shifted his focus to the second-year Gryffindor girl. A subtle expression of worry visited his face for a brief moment, contrasting the usual emotionless canvas. The poor girl seemed to be on edge trying to make sure her companion doesn't bolt off and go missing again.
Right... She just walked in. She probably hasn't eaten yet, Zion deduced.
"Er..." he began speaking, scratching the back of his head.
"If you haven't eaten yet, I can hold on to him for ya until you finish," Zion spoke up.
He turned his attention to Jasper again, this time letting out a tiny grin against his wishes.
"He's no pitbull or rottweiler..." Zion began.
The Hufflepuff first-year gently palmed the tabby's body. Wiggling his fingers, he began scratching Jasper's back.
"...but after chasing this lil shit for an hour, it's safe to say I've grown a little fond of the sprinting feline."
He reached out his arms and offered to take the cat.
"You should eat. I can keep him steady. I don't mind," Zion said, his face much warmer this time.

✽Avery tilted her head. Confused at whatever Twilight was. She knew about dhampirs or what she guessed muggles called vampires, but she had never seen them actually suck blood. It was illegal in the wizarding world, and many kept themselves in check very well. Avery knew some students were dhampirs, but she couldn't place a finger on if she'd met one of them. She probably had, but didn't even know it. They were always good at hiding it.
"Twilight? Sorry to sound ignorant, but what is that? Is it some kind of muggle creation?" Her brows furrowed in confusion as she tried to decipher the word. She knew what twilight was regarding the time of day, but whatever this other version was baffled her.
She hadn't really even thought of eating. It had only been a fleeting thought until then. She remembered her grandparents always telling her to never skip breakfast as it was the most important meal of the day, but she wondered what would happen if she didn't eat. She normally skipped lunch, so if she skipped breakfast and made sure to get lunch, then what was the harm? She didn't want to find out, so she nodded, handed her cat to the boy, grabbed a piece of toast from the nearby Gryffindor table and ate it. She didn't want to dilly dawdle in case Zion hadn't eaten yet as well.
"Thank you. I can take him now so you can eat." Avery commented as she took Jasper back into her arms. His body was calmer now. Almost sleepy as if the run that morning had exhausted him. She nearly laughed at him. He always did things like this so she would put him down and let him cause more chaos.
She just hoped KodoPodo wasn't nearby. Ever since the ferret and Jasper had met, they had become quite the chaotic duo and there would be no stopping Jasper if he saw his ferret friend. Then real chaos would unfold, and it wouldn't be a small amount, no. It would be the kind of chaos that tore the walls of the castle down. ✽

Right. Magic people don't know what movies are, Zion thought.Avery Gray wrote: 18 Oct 2025, 23:34"Twilight? Sorry to sound ignorant, but what is that? Is it some kind of muggle creation?"
With Jasper in his arms, Zion paused in thought before he began explaining.
"Muggles have these entertainments called 'movies.' Think like, an enchanted painting and a book mixed together. Ever read a book and imagined the narrative in your head? Imagine that narrative in visual form. Twilight is a romance movie of some muggle girl who can't seem to choose between a vampire and werewolf. Watched it wit Mama once. It was so ass."
As he spoke, he grabbed Jasper's two front paws with his hands and began shadow-boxing, making sharp hissing noises with every punch.
The Hufflepuff observed Avery as she quickly ate her toast and took back Jasper.Avery Gray wrote: 18 Oct 2025, 23:34"Thank you. I can take him now so you can eat." Avery commented as she took Jasper back into her arms.
Zion tilted his head in slight disapproval. "You call that a meal?"
He shrugged as he loaded his plate. Eggs, sausage, bacon, fried tomatoes, toast and jam towered over his plate, as he began munching down. The Tom and Jerry chase earlier with Jasper had worked up quite an appetite.
"You know," Zion said casually, without giving much thought. "I ain't no cat expert. But it seemed like Jasper was looking for something earlier when I found him in the Trophy Room. Did he lose a toy or somethin'?"
The growing boy emptied his cup of orange juice in one gulp.

✽Avery nodded her head. Not fully understanding, but knowing enough now not to sound silly or clueless. Her muggle friend had never mentioned movies to Avery ever. Then again, there were many things her muggle friend had never had the chance to tell her before she died.
"Interesting. I had a muggle friend when I was young, but she never explained that to me. It must've never come up before."
Avery laughed at her breakfast. "Yeah. Ever since I hit my second year, I can usually last until lunch on a piece of toast. Don't worry. I make sure to eat plenty for both lunch and dinner, but nowadays I'm usually in a rush."
Avery tensed for a moment when Zion asked if Jasper had lost something. "Yeah. His brother, Alaska lives in America with my cousin, Dylan. The two were reunited after nearly a year apart over the summer, so it hasn't been an easy transition for Jasper to not have his brother with him every day." She explained. Letting out a sigh.
Jasper wasn't the only one missing someone. Avery missed her cousin. It had been amazing having him with her again. Like old times. Though, her reality was far from the old times. It was much more complex compared to the simple and shielded life she used to hold. ✽

Zion stared blankly at the brown tabby. He allowed a sad smile to form on his face as he caressed the back of Jasper's ear.
"Brother, huh," Zion said to himself. He was an only child himself, but he remembered the Bad Boys. A bond so close he still couldn't forget about them years later.
The boy tilted his head as he made eye contact with the cat. He gave it a warm smile, quite different from his usual emotionless face.
"Bonds like that ain't goin nowhere," Zion said softly.
Zion reflected on his time at Hogwarts. Yes it was hard, but to say the whole experience was a misery would have been inaccurate. He found a love for song writing through music therapy in the Rehearsal Room. He met new friends that he didn't mind being around. Some of the classes actually had him excited to learn more.
He gently squished Jasper's head with his hands as he looked into the tabby's eyes with a playful expression.
"The key is to live the best life you can, so that when you reunite, you can tell them all the bullshit and funny shit you went through. Who wants to learn that their loved ones went through hell because you weren't there? I wouldn't like that shit if my boys in Detroit told me that bullshit," Zion chuckled.
He pet the back of Jasper affectionately. Odd for someone that preferred pit bulls over house cats. "If you want them to thrive, then you need to thrive as well."
The Detroit-native then turned to Avery with an embarrassed face, "He... probably has no clue what I'm sayin, huh?"

✽Avery nodded as she listened. She knew that Jasper didn't understand. All he was probably thinking was that his brother had disappeared again instead of moving across the world. SHe knew that he was to return eventually, but Jasper didn't know that. All he knew was that his brother had gone. Avery was shocked at how similar her own situation had been as a young girl. She had lost Dylan then. Her cousin that was like a brother to her before he was stripped away from her. Back then, she didn't know where he was or who he even was anyone. That had been hard. Harder than a lot of things she'd done in her life.
"I've always thought he has. Honestly animals are way easier to tell how you feel compared to humans. They don't talk back, they just listen. He's heard many secrets from me over the time I've had him." Avery smiled.
"Anyway. You're right. If I'd heard those words back when I was eight, things would've been different, probably better, so thank you." Avery said with another smile. Glad she had met the young first year by chance. And by that chance she had probably just made a new friend. ✽
