The irony of standing with his father, mother, and sister at the precipice of another year at Hogwarts achieving exactly what he wanted (becoming a fourth year) while also feeling immensely more unhinged and fragile at the same time was absolutely comedic.

His sister's protective hand grazed over Harlan's shoulder as she looked him directly in the eye and gave a squeeze in knowing what he was mulling over. He hadn't had the easiest start, return, nor re-return back to Hogwarts and this felt like another tough beginning when all Harlow wanted for her baby brother was peace and a circle of good friends for the teenager. She had watched how an exciting start of Summer on the bodensee turned harrowing after the Athanatos Wedding where her brother had been possessed (allegedly) and that's when the details went blurry.

It wasn't fun to watch Harlan yelling like he'd lost his mind, needing calming draught, and someone who could come over to talk to him to help, but he just didn't seem the same anymore. Her lovable, whip smart brother had turned frigid in this isolation and all she could do was try to be there for him as much as she could.

Harlan provided a look back to Harlow that seemed empty. His own hand, cold as night, gripped onto hers as he provided a squeeze before moving it gingerly off of his shoulder. There was only a modicum of kindness in the gesture, something that glimmered a sense of who Harlan was before the incident.

" I'll be fine, Harlow. Go to your friends, i'll catch my own cabin. "

He didn't offer either of his parents a hug, standing there as they offered an array of unsure supporting gestures to Harlan who stood there stoic and as if he was just waiting for it to be offer.

' We love you both!'

" Love you too. " The string of words feel awkwardly from Harlan's mouth, he wasn't entirely sure what felt wrong within him but everything felt so disconnected and shattered as though core pieces of him had been taken and it was impossible to reassemble what was.

There wasn't much for Harlan to do other than make his way through the Hogwarts Express with a grimace plastered on his face from the ruckus of first years, the couples snogging, and the general tomfoolery kids could get themselves up to. Near the end of the train, there was finally an empty train compartment and Harlan was quick to scoot himself in and throw his things into the storage and sat down onto the seat with an elated sigh.

If he could just make it through the Welcome Ceremony without having fifty diabolical thoughts of how much he did not want to back at Hogwart, then he'd count today as a victory.

notes: this thread is actively open for a handful (2-3) of people to join. harlan is clearly not in the best mindset and may treat your character antagonistically due to various levels of unhealed trauma from a possession that happened during a very public event during the summer.

update (10/23): this thread is now officially closed from additional characters joining.

Zion stared blankly at the corridors of the Hogwarts Express. Students were walking about, meeting friends, and finding compartments to sit in. He had been told that the train would arrive at the magic school by dinner.

"Long ass train ride. How you gon be a magic school, and not teleport us there?" Zion grumbled out loud. A few students around the boy gave him a weird look. Not giving a single care in the world, Zion gave them a smooth wink and began to look for a compartment, leaving the students even more bewildered.

He opened the first compartment. A group of first years were excitedly sharing their excitement for the school year. The space was filled with youthful dreams.

Zion smiled and gave them a simple friendly nod as he closed the compartment door. His fake smile quickly faded.

"Muh fuckas think life's sunshines and rainbows," Zion sarcastically quipped as he opened the next compartment.

A couple was making out in the corner.

Zion laughed out loud at the sight. "Goddam, y'all goin at it!"

Despite the presence of another person in the room, the couple showed no signs of slowing down.

"Brother, I think that's too much tongue," Zion quipped as he shook his head and closed the compartment.

"Freaky ass muh fuckas," Zion grumbled as he made his way to the last compartment.

A fourth year Gryffindor was sitting quietly alone. He looked like he did not want to be bothered.

Perfect. Zion thought to himself.

The chocolate skinned boy entered respectfully, careful not to cross any boundaries.

"Is it okay if I sit here?" Zion smiled warmly. "I'll act like I don't exist."

Second year, Yolanda, was searching for a quiet space on the loud and boisterous train. Not really having made many buddies during last year she noticed a first year sneaking into a quiet compartment already holding an older boy, was the older boy a quidditch player? Awesome.

Yolanda hardly kept up last year and was determined to be at least slightly more present in the now. Meaning now was not the time to be bubbly, or sulky, but just calm and quiet. That was the vibe the compartment held for her.

"Is it okay if I sit here?", the boy said smiling, “I'll act like I don't exist."

Taking the first years lead Yolanda forced herself give a nervous smile and parroted the younger boys sentiment.

“Mind another younger year?” Yolanda directed at the 4th year, “And, you’re allowed to exist, firstie, no matter how wand-wet!” Yolanda told the first year giggling. “I’m teasing.”

Not wanting to tease the first-year too much on his very first ride to Hogwarts - or look immature to the 4th year boy - Yolanda smiled warmly to both taking out her notebook and quill and began writing down doodles/notes and her storyline to her imagined novel. It was something to do while waiting to see if they wanted to chat or sit quietly or a combo of both.

Finding this quiet compartment was very nice for Yolanda and she hoped the other students felt similar.

XXXXX𝓓esperately eager to spare herself a journey beside her younger brother, Meiyu hurriedly pounced onto the train, her feet moving before she could wave off her parents. The events from the summer had in truth, left her relationship with her parents far more strained than it initially had been, hearing an earful of how she needs to be careful this year now her brother was in the castle — Meiyu only taking that as an indication that he would snitch on her should she remain in his vicinity at any point. She had hoped for a moment of silence, the calm before the storm that the year ahead would bring, thus, she moved through the corridors of the train compartments, ignoring each until she reached the rear, smirking at a familiar grumpy face.

Prying the door open, she ignored the irrelevant, evidently a first year, boy, turning her head at yet another familiar face, only this time she had grown hair. "Aang! Is that you?" Meiyu piqued, her expression stilling, though, eyes slightly narrowing as she scanned the familiar face, confirming it was in fact, a previous duelling partner. "Nice to see your hair grew back, hopefully this year you won't be frozen on the piste." She remarked with a small curve in her lips, a fraudulent attempt at conveying sincerity with her words.

Tossing her bag to an empty seat, Meiyu moved to sit opposite the fellow lion who she had previously questioned in the dormitory, half surprised he still had the nerve to return to the castle — contrary to her own beliefs, it was at the very least, commendable on his part. "Still a loner I presume? I'm surprised that you've yet to make friends, perhaps you are that off putting." Meiyu announced, not entirely caring how harsh she would of sounded to the other two in the cabin. Fortunately for them, she wasn't here to socialise with them, merely kick start the year with some light hearted torment which was exactly what she needed after spending a month cooped up in a psych ward with nothing but nurses tending to her every need, perhaps too tedious for her given she adored her own independence.

Besides, the boy was at the very least, reasonable looking compared to the trolls of the castle, one of which being in the very train compartment they had all found themselves in. Slowly turning her head to the boy she had paid no attention to, her eyes slowly grazed across his features, discontent with another troll they had accepted this year. "I guess administration decided to lower their boundaries this year, not entirely sure how you made the cut, but I trust you'll perhaps enjoy the school given there are a lot of your kind there. I must ask, was your mother or father a troll? It would explain why you appear so frigid too." She commented, directly to the boy she had not met and frankly, cared little for meeting.

Having made a pit stop into the compartment, it was safe to say the contents of people within the compartment were enough to almost warrant a laugh from the usually stoic girl. Though she was not there to stay, she would be sure enough to make it worthwhile.

Zion politely laughed at the friendly teasing Ravenclaw girl, "Guess I'll be gettin that rookie treatment all year."

L joke, but at least she tried, Zion thought to himself.

He leaned over to the Ravenclaw girl and whispered. "Somethin tells me, pretty boy over here doesn't want to be bothered."

Suddenly, a Gryffindor girl came storming in the compartment full of theatrics and an abundance of sass. It was rare Zion met someone who was more blunt than him.

The boy listened patiently as the girl went through every person in the compartment with something to say.

Shaking his head, as if he was dealing with a little sibling, Zion hoisted his things on the overhead compartment.

He let out an unbothered chuckle as the girl threw jabs at his parents and called him frigid. "I don't doubt it," the Detroit native laughed. "Frigid recognize frigid."

"Watch out, though. Talk like that gets you shot where I come from," Zion said bluntly, as if it was a fun fact of the day.

Seeing how the loud girl didn't seem to care that he was there, Zion decided to do the same. He walked over and sat next to the Ravenclaw girl, who seemed to be doodling in her notebook.

With a tired yawn, he took out a book from his bag. A little sticky note was on the cover

Zion blinked twice as he read the title of the book. The Autobiography of Malcolm X.

"Man, ain't nobody trynna read this shit for fun," Zion grumbled to himself as he put the book away.

the ambient noises of the locomotive hummed a warmth that helped harlan settle himself into the empty compartment hoping for the peace to extend through the entire trip back to hogwarts. well, dreams were free, right?

the peace shattered quickly as a young dark skinned boy opened the door to his compartment feeling oddly not wizard-like. perhaps a muggleborn? the way he spoke also didn't sound like anything harlan was used to hearing. at the very least, the first arrival had the decency to move in a way that seemed respectful to harlan. an appropriate ask as harlan gestured to one of the corners in a way that showed he had enough manners to answer but not enough in his current state to offer anymore in this moment.

without skipping a beat, a second student slipped her way in as well and it took everything for harlan to not let out a little groan of irritation. supposedly looking and feeling like death wasn't enough to keep people at bay. " no problem. " he offered another gesture towards the corner as harlan kicked his feet up and made himself as comfortable as he could with his two new guests stifling the personal space he was trying to maintain.

and like the hurricane from the first time they met, meiyu xiang, the somehow elitist korean gryffindor duelist made prefect had come barging into their compartment in a typical whirlwind fashion. he'd allow the others to defend themselves, he wasn't anyone's savior and had no plans on addressing anything other than what was meant for him.

" and look where you ended up, meiyu. " he shot back out with a venom and tenacity that was meant to cut and bleed. " looks like not even dueling accolades and a gryffindor prefectship can make you very likable either. " harlan knew she wasn't the type to actually realize what might be the truth, but he couldn't help but nip back at her quips.

" doubt they had magic where you're from. " the fourth year chimed in right after the younger boy mentioned getting shot. " there's far worse things in this world, trust me. " a flash back, his mind haunted by this summer where his body was plagued by a possession willing him to act not of his own accord.

XXX
XXXXX𝓐 piercing foreign accent almost threw the young lioness off guard, his squeaky voice being irritating enough to send a chill down Meiyu's spine in a way she despised. Merely insinuating getting shot had made his position clear to her, evidently a Muggle in this realm and compartment. Irregardless to her desire to torment him on his status alone, her expression remained unfaltering, turning to face him with a small scowl plastering her delicate features.

"What slums in England did you crawl out of? I thought knife crime was all the range here." She blankly rebuked, almost baiting him into a conversation he had no business being part of. Besides, he had not succumb the same fate she had that forced her involuntary admission to St. Mungo's, nor did he have any business of knowing such gruesome details that warranted her stay. Though, he was beginning to lure himself into a trap, should he wish to continue spewing utter nonsense — Meiyu merely scoffing once his attention diverted to a book he whipped out.

"An autobiography? Are you sure that's good use of your time?" She muttered, namely to herself prior to diverting her attention back to the German who sat opposing her.

Harlan, at the very least, had been an enjoyable presence in the brief moment they shared leading up to the Spring Ball last academic year. For once, she was met with a bite, almost foiling her plans in the search for a righteous guard dog for her time at the wretched castle. At the very least, she found it admirable that he had kept tabs on her, likely accredited to the announcement made at dinner one evening with her rise to the prefect position she had obtained. Though, she had always kept her circle small, refusing to spend any free time with others, reserving her solitude for avid observations.

"You flatter me." Meiyu praised, likely for the first time.

"I for one, cannot account for a single thing you have achieved this year, perhaps akin to the shadows you choose to bask in like peculiar wallflower you are. It's a shame, I had such good things planned for you." She chimed, sighing as her gaze momentarily shifted to the formerly bald duellist who appeared to not care for the entire ordeal.

Diverting her gaze back to the only person of her interest within the compartment, Meiyu's eyes momentarily lingered, as though to observe his features, which she had rarely done before. He was tempting, the perfect toy awaiting a creator — much like a real life Frankenstien. "Say Harlan," she began, slowly leaning in to inch closer to him, teasingly resuming with what she assumed to be the perfect bait, "was your summer that awful or have you always been a miserable bastard?"

Perhaps it would not be wise to pick a fight with someone vastly older than her, though, she had nothing to lose at this moment in time. Besides, there was no better way to kick start the academic year without some friendly rivalry, was there?

It wasn't as though the previous year, as action packed and immensely traumatic it had been for her, served as fruitful in her own eyes. For now, there was only one way she would be able to test this and that would only be if Harlan was stupid enough to take the bait.

"Goddam..." Zion reacted to Harlan's insult to Meiyu. "He goin hard in the paint," the boy said as if he was reacting to a basketball game.

The Detroit-native gave out an amused chuckle at Harlan's comment about worse things in this world. "I can imagine. Give an ignorant hood motha fucka some magic and we'll have more to worry about then some shootouts and drive-bys."

The loud girl attempted to hurl insults at Zion, who just simply let out a little smirk.

"Good job," Zion smiled warmly at Meiyu as she talked about England's knife crime. "And, I do not find this boring ass book a good use of my time... hence why I put it back in my bag, but I appreciate the lookout."

He noticed the loud girl pushing Harlan's buttons. At first he shook his head. The fuck wrong wit dis bitch? Zion thought in his head. Observing the interaction however, Zion let loose a knowing smirk.

"You need to work on your game if that's how you flirt," Zion chuckled at Meiyu. "Not that I know what I'm talkin about."

Zion kicked back in his seat as he let out a yawn. He began humming a smooth R&B tune as he looked out the window, his soulful voice blending in with the background rather than disrupting it. He took out a packet of peanut M&M's and popped a yellow and blue one into his mouth.

Magic or no magic, at least one thing remained constant in Zion's new world. People. The human mind seemed to be consistent regardless of the world. Was he relieved or disappointed? This he did not know quite yet.

The boy observed Harlan. Definitely, someone who went through shit. Zion thought to himself.

He sighed as he tossed a spare packet of peanut M&Ms onto the older boy's lap. Zion's eyes didn't linger nor did his mouth speak any words.

Zion turned his gaze to the Meiyu girl. Shame, Zion thought to himself. Cut all the volatile yapping and that loose tongue, she'd actually be pretty cool to talk to.

He shook his head silently as he closed his eyes. If no music or book were to entertain him, he would simply fast forward time by sleeping.

Why was it when all Harlan was seeking out was peace, the universe decided that the compartment he chose would be anything but that? It seemed as though Meiyu could find a problem with anything with a pulse and this poor kid with his thick accent, dialect, and curse words wasn’t making it any easier to help deescalate the rising tension. A quick glance over to the quiet girl who the other Gryffindor called Aang, a reference that was lost on the pureblood and probably came from something rather snooty and was without a doubt meant as a sincere insult.

As he felt a plop of something on his lap, Harlan looked down at something he didn’t recognize entirely but with the context clues and with what the other was eating, he suspected it was something akin to Muggle food. He mouthed the words, “ thanks. ” as he offered a nod in exchange for a piece of advice he’d relay to the other wizard.

“ There’s no winning with her. ” His head tilted toward the first year in an attempt to give him some advice, but he also had quite the mouth on him as well. “ And she’s also a prefect, which means if given enough reason, she has the authority to reprimand us. ” Harlan hoped that he wouldn’t have to spell it out anymore plainly to the boy, who probably wondered how someone like her received such a role. It was speculated that Headmaster Lear took a bribe from Meiyu’s parents for her role as Prefect, but then again, Harlan wasn’t certain if any of the Gryffindor Prefect’s really fit the bill on good and industrious witches and wizards. " She's also not flirting, she likes to bark orders at people. " His watchful gaze now switching back to his main target, expecting all kinds of heinous half-truths to be blurted out haphazardly and carelessly like she'd been doing so far to simply get a rise out of them all.

" You know, i'm sure it couldn't have been much worse than yours. " As she leaned in, Harlan recoiled backwards not wanting to give her too much of that power that she craved. " You look fresh from St. Mungos, no one to attack at home so you couldn't wait to sink your teeth into one of us? " He genuinely couldn't stand her pretension and could only hope she could be brought back down to Earth one day when she was tired of always trying so hard to show that she was better than everybody else. Most people who were better didn't need to flaunt it and existed in the knowing of it being enough.

" How about you just relax and we can have a quiet ride back? Save your venom for the people who are actually trying to oppose you than us innocent bystanders. " Harlan doubted the request would be taken seriously and might only fuel the fires even more, but he'd have to try before he considered pulling his wand out to stop the rudeness and insults another way.

XXX
XXXXX𝓕lattery was a fool's game. More often than not, it reminded Meiyu of the grotesque times spent at galas — faux pleasantries were disguised as both conversation starters and aids, caring minimally for either. It came to no surprise that the strange boy who sat somewhere Meiyu paid no mind to divert her gaze to, made an insulting comment that she had been flirting with the foreigner who sat directly across her.

"It is very apparent that you do not know what you're talking about." She quickly rebuked, refusing to divert her gaze to him and fixating it on the upper year before her, instantly becoming infatuated with tormenting him. The brief summer spent with her family prior to her involuntary admission, much to her disdain, had only given her a few weeks at best with her brothers, though, she had spent that time miserably glaring out the window for the most part. Engrossed in fantasies of a reminiscent past, memories of her mundane summer gushed back, almost bringing a small frown to her usual stoic expression that she plastered across her face.

It hadn't been until Harlan began once more, spewing nothing but utter compliments her way, that a small smirk formed with the curve of her lips. Her rise to her hard earned prefect position, one of power, had served the young girl with the authority to do as she pleased, though she cared little to enforce rules on others, it enabled her to by-pass what she had once presumed to be a hinderance during her first year, granting her access to private facilities where she could enjoy her solitude once the chaos of her mind resumed once more. Though she had not made use of the facilities last year, she had planned to do so this up-coming term, fully aware that her discharge notes would only bring prying eyes her way.

Meiyu's initial coy demeanour, wavered within a second at the mere mention of the hospital she had found herself encaged in, for almost an entire month. Her gaze narrowed ever so slightly. She could give him what he wanted, which was evidentially a claw to the face, painful enough to draw his blood out, though she promised to be good, namely to herself so she wouldn't wind up back in that horrid ward. Surely she had been nothing but nice to the foreigner who clearly sat where he didn't belong, alone and cooped up with underclassmen whilst others sat in carriages with friends — sardonic in a rightful, yet twisted, way.

"Guess you spent your summer there drugged up, I did read that delirium causes one to imagine things they desire." Meiyu muttered, inquisitive to how his slight remark had been so spot on. It never took much to brew irritation within the young girl, she had immediately become bored of the silent ex-airbender, the misguided young boy and most importantly, the boy who clearly, did not belong.

Swiftly shifting her gaze to the odd trio within the carriage, it soon became apparent that this was evidently a waste of her time. Her own house mate clearly sought to impress the others, irregardless to what he had been through over the summer, and respectively, what she had been through. Despite his harsh words entwined with sprout of venom, there was something about Harlan that had evidently shifted over the course of summer; something that had piqued Meiyu's intrigue. Harlan was a force to reckon with, perhaps for this particular instance, she would grant him the pleasure of earning his first win, regardless to the fact he was on the Gryffindor Quidditch Team, meaning the wins very rarely came his way.

Cautiously pulling back, Meiyu scoffed at the entire arrangement, quick to rise to her feet at the lacklustre events within the carriage. Turning on her heel, she moved to the carriage door, pulling the heavy metal to the side to make her exit. In her haste, she turned back to gaze at the boy with a mix of disdain, displeasure and disappointment.

"Careful of your tongue Montgomery, you wouldn't want to lose any privileges would you?"
