It was still early in the morning, the sun had not yet risen above the horizon, since the approaching winter like usually delayed the sunrise for a couple of hours.  It was like an hour before breakfast would officially start, when Alan had went to the greenhouses to do the errand. He had heard that Professor MacTavish requested some help from the students to gather some plants and since Alan had nothing better to do in most mornings, given the fact that he usually woke up too early for breakfast, he decided that he might as well do something useful. It did not dawn on him yet, that he kind of had zero ideas about plants as he often forgot their properties. So sure, he remembered how they looked and how to prepare them, but could neither name them most of the times nor say what to use them for; Sanny [@Santario Martin] could probably help him with that kind of knowledge... so if he would ever need help in the future, he could just ask his friend. Alan pulled his robes closer, as it was getting colder outside, than it had been in the Gryffindor territory.

Now a couple of minutes later, Alan was kneeling on the soil looking at the plants and some more plants, trying to decide which plants would be considered herbs and which are useless weed. He tilted his head, examining a plant. His hands were full of dirt already and his herbology book was placed next to him on the ground, while he was flipping through it and tried finding the name of the plant he was looking at. He had not much of an idea, whether it was useful or not or if it was even time to harvest the plant.

Alan sighed and looked over to the greenhouse, as he saw a familiar face leaving the greenhouse. He has been in class with him a lot, shared a lot of courses with the boy over the past few years and even had spend a day in the Hospital Wing together. In the time Alan had met him, he was sure to say that this boy was pretty nice and probably could help him more with the task given as by the fact that he already completed the errand. "Hey, uhmm.... uh.. R-Reid?", he called the tall boy, hoping he did remember the name correctly and once he saw that he caught the boys attention, he decided to continue his question, "Can you help me figure out which one of those are actually herbs?".

The voice drew him away from his thoughts, which was a nice hot breakfast back in the Great Hall. His mind had wandered enough and it punished him by reminding him to eat before going to practice. It wasn't a mandatory practice, he just took it upon himself to one his skills in Quidditch. However, he had finished a rather lengthy introspective time alone and someone seemed to reach out to him.

He turned around and locked eyes with Alan, whom he immediately let a smile grace his features for. Reid knew him in some way, how could he not? They went to school together for four years already, he'd be stupid to not at least know their names. But classes were often rendezvous for all of them, he's had a few classes with the Gryffindor after all. "Alan, hey." he greeted briefly.

Reid was heading over to the boy, wiping his dirt covered fingers on his jeans as the boy asked for his help. "Course, course. I'll help you." He was quick about his answer, not even taking a second to think it over, someone needed his assistance. "Nice out, innit?" The wizard rubbed his hands together and squatted next to the boy and his book. He leaned over and looked at the page he was looking at, his head craned over the pages as Alan was referencing.

"Think if you look at the stems -" Reid's finger gently traced a plant's. "Kind of an indicator. Leaves probably are your best guess at what a herb is. The ones I pulled out were something like this." Reid slowly leaned over and gestured to a cluster of plants. He pulled back and looked back at him, he really had no proper way of explaining it.

"I dunno how to really make this make sense, so I can grab a sample if you want."  It didn't hurt to spend some time helping someone in need, maybe he'll learn.

"Yeah, even though it is getting a bit more fresh outside... Obviously w-winter is approaching...", he muttered, smiling softly at the Hufflepuff. He had barely time to speak with the other during the last time so it was really nice for Reid to help him sort this things out.

He tried to listen at what Reid was explaining to him and nodded now and then as he tried to look at the stems that were pictured in the illustrations after Reid had pointed them out to him. For him it looked like a plant, but he recognized one of them as weeds. "I know that this is a bad one, so not gonna pick that one right? It can make some creatures sick", Alan said suddenly, pointing at one of the illustrations, leaving a smudge of soil on the page. "But how can I know whether something is a herb or a weed? What if it is both? Is there a possibility it is both?", Alan shook his head in confusion, staring at the taller kid helplessly. He really he would be better at the subject as it was sometimes important.

Well for Alan it was usually only important if they were edible or had some special healing properties... that was all he needed to know so he could take care of creatures; right? Alan had no idea actually. What would he need to know and how was he supposed to keep all of this inside his head? A sigh escaped his lips as he tried to look at the pages, glaring at them in the hopes that might be able to help him. Of course the knowledge did not suddenly appear inside his mind and he huffed.

He tilted his head and nodded at Reid, when he offered to pick a sample of herbs for him and he smiled slightly as he watched the Hufflepuff work. Meanwhile he just attempted to do something, comparing every single plant in the soil with the illustrations on the page, before he plucked them out of the soil. He kind of hoped for it to be the correct choices and that he was not just picking weeds.

"Are these okay like this?", he asked as he showed a few herbs he had plucked fro the dirt and showed them to the badger with an insecure look. There were probably one or two weeds mixed in between that would be useless for the professor, however Alan had tried his best to slowly but surely work himself through the herbology bed in front of him. He looked over at Reid, waiting for him to check over the bundle he had plucked from the ground, hoping he had not messed this up completely.

Sometimes Alan wondered how this could even be so difficult. The images were there and he had the plants right before his eyes. So why was it this so difficult to actually find out what is what with the actual herbs. Maybe he should read the text beneath? Then again there would nnot be more in the text than in the images right? What could teach better than a visual image? Alan saw no reason to actually read the texts with the description that was underneath each of the illustrations. That would just take so much more time and would hence slow down the process and increase the time spend on the task. And if he thought about it, he had done pretty well so far. He usually only read the full texts in the school books, if he had no other choice than to do so and this book had enough images to help him find out on his own... and Reid was there helping him and Alan thought that was pretty nice of him!

Herbology was complicated in and of itself, he stumbled through the class sometimes, but it was one of the few he actually had some backbone in. The student reached out to the Gryffindor's bundle, his hand hovering over a particular plant. A noise came out of him as he retracted the hand as if he made a mistake in doing it in the first place. "Uh, well ..."

Uncertainly rose in his voice like a tide, though his self-doubt wasn't much of a battle as he looked at the bundle he had again. "These ones right here -" His dirt hand cradled a weed, taking another from his hand as he pulled them out. "... don't need 'em. You can just toss these lot in a bin, they're weed." he confidently informed. Reid slowly sat himself down beside Alan, committing himself to helping a fellow student out.

He could leave, go practice, eat, or hang out with friends - but he was trying to hold onto simple ideals. Someone needed his assistance, who was he to deny it? "If you look at the weed ..." Reid proceeded to explain the simple characteristics of weed, it didn't come from a Herbology master, but it was from a layman's terms. "- That's sort of how. They don't smell too good either, they honestly smell horrendous." He broke the stem of one of the ones he took from his pile, scrunching his nose at the stench. Reid held the stem not too far from Alan in case he ever wanted to actually smell it.

Alan glanced at Reid, grateful for the other students help as he hoped that would help him manage to do this errand. He had just wanted to help the professor with it, as it seemed like the thing to do, since he had the time and it had sounded like fun at the very moment he decided to help; he now slightly doubted that decision. Then again it meant that he met Reid again, a boy that he had not met in a while and one of the first people he interacted with from the other houses.

The third year watched the Hufflepuff curiously and kept silent as he saw that Reid was concentrating on what he was doing and Alan did not want to distract him or cause him to make a mistake. When the other boy sat down next to him in the dirt, Alan grinned slightly as he nodded at the explanations. When Reid broke one of the stems of the weed and held it close to him, Alan leaned forward slightly to sniff slightly, only to instantly scrunch up his face in disgust at the smell. "Th-that smell is awful... no wonder it isn't used for herbology...", he muttered and shook his head. His words did probably not make much sense, potions tasted horrible too which meant that there were probably some bad smelling ingredients in them too, but at that moment his words made sense to him.

Now that he knew what to look out for he looked through the bundle he had taken from the herb bed and slowly took out the kinda plant that the Hufflepuff had pointed out to him. A frown on his face as he had to concentrate not to throw away the good ones too. "U-uhm... like this then? Or do I need to take out more of the herbs- I mean weeds, are there more weeds in this bundle or can I bring them inside?", he held the bundle of herbs to the Hufflepuff, a bundle he would probably need to tie into two or three smaller bundles so that they would dry properly once he brought them into the greenhouse.

His reaction to the smell garnered an apologetic smile. The student only knew about that because he was always such a curious individual around his mother's garden. He fondly remembered breaking weeds and smelling the stench that it gave off. Reid followed his lead, getting up at the mention of finishing the task. "You can bring them in I think." he quipped. The Hufflepuff brushed the grass from his jeans and used his angle to pick up some of the bundles.

"What have you been up to Alan? I haven't talked to you in a while, Quidditch kind of took over my life ever since I joined. I mean, it's not bad though." He held a hand out for him, if he wanted help getting up. But he liked keeping in touch with people, reconnecting even more so. He had drifted far enough from his own friends and he took any chance to talk to them. But then again, maybe they weren't that close at all and he was just overthinking it.

The wizard also had wondered if Alan joined the Quidditch team, he seemed the type to play it. But perhaps he was a dueler, he didn't remember if he saw Alan at the Gryffindor vs. Ravenclaw game when he was cheering for his two friends. The thought of them though didn't exactly make him happy, not after what Erin told him. He didn't want to hold it against Gryffindors in general, he thought of Alan has being the exception - so far.

The third year would look over and nod happily, when the Hufflepuff said that his bundle of herbs seemed fine. He was kind of relieved and had not assumed this task to be as difficult. When he read the errand he had assumed, he would just have to randomly pluck some plants from the herb bed, but Reid proofed him differently. There was more to this task, than he thought there would be and Alan had learned a lot.The bad-smelling stuff was weed, bad weed that would not be good for a batch of herbs and probably should be plucked from any kind of flower or herb bed, before it spread. Surely Alan would not be able to forget that horrible smell either, so it was knowledge he might have for life.

"I just spend a lot of my time outside nowadays", he answered the Hufflepuff's question, when he took the offered hand. Alan gladly used the other boy's assistance to get back on his feet; both of their hands covered in mud and soil. Alan would let go of Reid's hand as soon as he regained his footing and examined his hand, his fingernails were caked with dirt, which the Gryffindor tried to lightly wipe of at his pants. Normally he wouldn't have bothered, but his pants were covered in the mud he was kneeling in, so he had to change his clothes before breakfast anyway. After all he did not want to bring all the dirt into the dining room or look as if he had just bathed in mud.

"I just like being outside, I don't even mind the rain much around this time of year! I even do my homework out on the Grounds, if it is not too cold or rainy. It also helps that the stables are closeby!", he explained with a sigh, as he began to make his way towards the greenhouse in the hopes, that the Hufflepuff would follow him along. "I didn't even know you joined Quidditch, do you like it?", asking this, he would glance over at the other boy, as he pushed open the door to the greenhouse in which they would find the professor, Alan's eyes shining curiously.

A sharp inhale brought cool and crisp air into his lungs like a splash of cold water just hit his chest. Reid absentmindedly let a few 'uh huhs' and 'for sures' as he walked alongside Alan the whole time. He agreed, he had a similar sentiment, just with a lot less mentions of 'homework'. But he knew he should be something more like Alan, he just hasn't had the proper motivation to do so.

Reid slipped his hands into the pockets of his worn denim jeans, head tilted as he summoned a proper answer Alan's question. "Mate, I love it. I've been so excited for our next practice. We won our past two games against Slytherin and Gryffindor, so I'm hoping we can get a third one and finish clean." A laugh accompanied the prefect, choosing to hold the door out at the very end with his foot, which he thanked Alan for.

"Saskia and Quinn lead our team, they do a damn fine job at being Captains. Both are beaters, as I am too. But I'm just a second-string, so in case one of them goes down, I play. I hope it doesn't come to it, but I do like playing too." He let the door close behind him as he tailed behind the Gryffindor. A curious expression dotted his features, "Do you ever plan to play, Alan?"

Reid did well with controlling himself around the topic, he got zealous, almost fanatical about Quidditch sometimes. He was no purist by all means, he just loved playing the game. Watching it was cool, but he knew he'd get envious if he ever had to watch his friends play and he was just stuck in the stands. But at the same time, he was just a rookie and the young boy sometimes choked up around trying to hit people he knew on the field. Erin was the only person so far that he had no hesitation in launching a bludger at, perhaps she felt the same that time.

It was kind of amusing, really, to listen to the taller Hufflepuff talk about Quidditch. He seemed quite passionate about the game Alan was scared off and amazed by at the same time. He loved the thought and how it was fun for other people to play, but the young lion was scared of it. Humans weren't meant to fly or they would have wings and while Alan could probably transfigure himself to have wings, he would still not be able to fly. "I am glad you enjoy it so much! I wish you all the luck for the next game!", he chirped, smiling up at the other boy.

"I do not plan, but I kind of began to learn how to fly- or at least I am trying to learn it...", he admitted to the other, rubbing the back of his head nervously. A soft, yet nervous smile lingering on his face. Alan just walked up to where the herbs were dried to put his bundle there, before walking back to Reid, done with the errand.

"Wanna head back to the castle for breakfast? Catch up and stuff?", he asked, curiously. He kind of wanted to continue talking to the Hufflepuff for a while, since it had been a while since they last had the chance to talk with another. Alan's pants were covered in dried dirt and mud from sitting on the ground, but the Gryffindor could not care less. But he might want to at least wash his hand, so they probably would need to stop by the restrooms if they were to go the breakfast together. He wondered if the third year badger would like to catch up some more.

Catching up sounded nice. It rung a good note in his mind, like a song he's been waiting to hear for a while. Maybe he had been waiting for it, at least someone sung it to him. Reid nodded vigorously, smile as bright as the sun above them at the question. "Of course, Alan. I always want to catch the wave before we end up having to fight the first years for some of the items." It was a plain joke, but one where he had previous experience of playfully fighting a first year over some of the food at the table.

The mornings were sort of his favorite parts of the day, it was where he found the morning people and the not so morning people. He was the latter, but he was slowly coming around to being one. Practice was sometimes early in the day, he wouldn't dare miss a beat of it and had slowly grown into some sort of self discipline with himself about it. But if he had the chance to sleep in?

He just might. "Mon then, my stomach's gurgling thinking about the food." he cheekily grinned. Simultaneously, he headed out of the greenhouse and held the door open for the Gryffindor. Despite the emotions he held in the last few months, this was a nice reprieve from it. The good company of a friend could do so much for someone his age and it showed. There was a unrestrained happiness behind his green eyes as he waited and would eventually follow the Gryffindor back to Hogwarts.
