A Dance With Fire
Ruka had been suffering a low period in his life for months before a conversation on top of the Astronomy Tower, in the middle of the night, had finally pulled him out of this deep, dark pit he had been residing in for far too long.
He had woken up that morning and actually joined breakfast; He‘d eaten a whole plate of waffles and some berries, and then marched down to the Grounds, loaded with torches of all sizes and an old, battered magic radio that only seemed to play one song, which he had found abandoned in the rehearsal room a few days ago.
Reaching a good spot not too far from the Castle, he dropped everything at his bare feet and started setting up for his planned performance.
Usually he would keep his performances to himself, especially during the past few months, wanting to stay hidden from other people‘s eyes, but a sudden urge to really be part of life again had prompted him to put on a little show where everyone was going to be able to watch it if they wanted to.
With a little sigh he turned up the radio, an upbeat melody, like something to be heard at a carnival parade, echoing across the Grounds and drawing people‘s attention in.
Ruka‘s eyes slid across the sea of students just taking a stroll nearby or having settled down to read or study in the fresh air, a small flutter of nerves making him aware of just how long it had been since he had really performed in front of people.
A few upper-class students had stopped close by, probably curious about the music, watching him intently. It made him feel almost a little embarrassed, but also encouraged him to get on with his routine.
Taking a deep breath, he took his wand out of the pocket of his dad‘s old grey tracksuit bottoms and pointed it at the tip of one of the torches.
„Incendio,“ he muttered, watching as the tip of the torch bloomed with fire almost immediately.
He picked it up carefully and touched it to the tip of a second one, letting the flame split itself in two.
Witch both torches in hand, Ruka slowly eased into his routine, twirling the torches at his sides and over his head, his feet moving in time with the music coming from the old radio.
It took a minute before he really started enjoying his performance like he used to, but once the initial nervousness passed, he found it hard to remember how he‘d been able to move around without his flames accompanying every single step he took.
Soon enough he was balancing four flaming torches, feet moving effortlessly across the grass. He did a little spin in mid-air, flames flickering in the wind and drawing patterns in the air, but never wavering.
For the first time in forever, Ruka was able to draw the same joy from performing again as he used to when he still used to do this back in Ireland for a warm blanket and a cup of soup at the end of the day.
As he spun in circles and juggled his flaming torches in time with the music, he sincerely hoped that the students watching were enjoying it just as much as he did.

Kara looked at the Gryffindor boy intently from the back of the crowd. She wondered what he was doing, cause she could only hear the music and people were cheering. Kara tried pushing through the crowd, which wasn't difficult, she was pretty tall.
She made it to the outskirts of the crowd and creeped forward, studying the boy. He looked like he was a second year, a year right ahead of herself. He had dusty copper hair and large green eyes. He seemed pretty talented, as he kept his moves with the beat while holding four torches lit on fire.
"Wait, FIRE?!? He's gonna kill himself accidentally!" Kara though.
She rubbed her eyes, thinking maybe it was a trick of the light, but she opened her eyes to see him still dancing with the fire barely balancing. Kara whipped her head around to see if anyone else was thinking the same thing, but everyone seemed to be enjoying the boy's show. She scowled, did nobody care about other peoples lives here?!?
"Wait, stop!"she exclaimed"You might hurt yourself!"
She watched as other people looked at her in disgust and confusion, but she didn't care.
"Aguamenti!" She said, pointing her wand at the torches, making the fire steam off.
The boy wasn't wet, but he was probably mad at her. She wasn't going to say her name, knowing people would make fun of her.
"Why would you do that?!?" She asked in a surprised tone. I mean, who would? Maybe he was just looking for fame, but of course, she would probably never know, since she would even dare facing him again.
She turned her heel and walked around the crowd to the other side of the lake where the memorial to her sister still lay. The flower had withered away so she threw it into the lake, petal by petal. She got a new one and placed it on top of the small mound of sand. Kara sat down by the mound and stared off into the murky waters, wondering what it would be like to have her sister again.

Finally, it took Griseldis two hours to finish her Charms homework, the new spells they learned were no longer that easy for the second-year students. But Griseldis didn't mind, she loved challenges because it could improve her skills in the most effective way. She gathered her books and papers quietly since she was in the library, then she packed her school supplies into her leather made backpack. The Gryffindor Prefect stood up from her seat while walking towards the door she didn't forget to give the Librarian assistant a polite nod of good-bye.Interacting with @Ruka Tân
Mentioning @Kara Capricorn
It was like a habit, every time when Griseldis completed her homework she would rather go outside and rest near the Great Lake at her usual favorite spot. The moment she left the Hogwarts castle, she could hear upbeat music playing not far from the entrance hall. That was when she saw a few upper-class students watching in awe of a Gryffindor boy, maybe around her age was performing what it seems a dangerous performance. She quickly walked into the small crowd and watched how the boy juggled four flaming torches skillfully. It might be against the rule to do this, however, Griseldis noticed that the boy was well trained in this kind of performance and it reminded her of the Chinese circus she once saw when she was a very young kid. What the boy doing was truly impressive, the other students around seemed to really like his small performance and most of them had a smile on their faces. But all of a sudden, the joyful moment was broken with a loud scream.
"Wait, stop!" A young Slytherin girl with long brown hair appeared and exclaimed, "You might hurt yourself!" What the young Slytherin did next confused everyone, she took out her wand and didn't even do a wand movement. She pointed at the Gryffindor boy, then shouted a spell that wasn't even on their Charms' Syllabus for both first-years and even second-years, "Aguamenti!", then she asked the boy in a surprised tone why he would do that.
Everything went silent, well, except the music still playing on the Wizard radio but nothing really happened at all. A few students whispered to each other, probably were talking about the Slytherin girl's strange action and outburst. The Gryffindor boy might be confused as well, but he still continued his performance and spun in circles and juggled his flaming torches. Griseldis almost thought that the young Slytherin girl was trying to attack the boy but she was relieved that it was nothing. Still, Griseldis was very confused about why she would try to cast a spell that was not even taught in class before by Professor Vernatis.
The cheering and applauses returned right after the young Slytherin girl left the crowd. Griseldis simply shrugged, it wasn't the first time for first-year students to try out spells that they never really learned in their Charms lessons before. However, as students they should know better than without a proper tutor, the spells would never work. It would be quite dangerous if attempting casting an unlearned spell could really cause a lot of explosions that might get themselves killed.
Griseldis clapped her hands and cheered at the young performer, "Your juggling skill is really wicked!", then a sudden idea came to her mind since she was in a good mood, perhaps he wouldn't mind having a second partner to join in his performance, "Hey! Can I join in the performance with you? I'm a Martial Artist and I know how to do some tricks at least...oh, pardon me, I should introduce myself, I'm Gris, a second-year Gryffindor."
ReducioOOC: @Kara Capricorn you have not done any Charms homework to gain any spells yet and the spell "Aguamenti" is not even in the Charms Syllabus [click here to see the Syllabus]. So in reality, your character attempting to cast that spell would not work and nothing would happen to Ruka. There is in fact a spell that is specialized putting out fire called "Extenguishing Spell", then you need to finish the first two Herbology lessons, after that you will be able to do the 3rd lesson and learn that spell. Here is the Herbology curriculum [click here].

Having stuck near Ruka for the past several days, Jack had kept a little more distance between them for the fire-dancer's event, but otherwise, that day was no different. The Slytherin watched the performance, the performer, and his audience from beneath the shade of a nearby tree. He was glad the second-year had finally had the motivation to try demonstrating his talents in front of their fellow schoolmates rather than practicing on his own alone in the Rehersal Room.
It was a step out of the shadow of depression and his father's death that Jack had feared Ruka had been slipping into. Seeing him now, though, with his brilliant flames alive in motion and his feet light as he took each graceful step, the hazel-eyed boy's worries for the Gryffindor were eased. It seemed that doing what he loved in front of people who appreciated it had a rejuvenating effect on the second-year.
Jack had chosen a spot to observe from some distance away for a number of reasons. For one, he had seen more of the show up-close before than others had, so he wanted to allow them the chance to view it closer up as well. Another reason, however, was that the Slytherin knew he had a number of people who sought to avoid him and others he himself wanted to avoid. It wouldn't have been fair to Ruka if said people stayed away just because of Jack, so Jack had kept back and out of plain sight.
Things had seemed to be going pretty smoothly for a while. At least until a long-haired brunette from Jack's own house came to interrupt, yelling something about Ruka potentially hurting himself. Jack raised a brow in incredulity, wondering what on Earth the girl thought she was trying to do. Had she really believed she was 'saving' the second-year, or was it some excuse to try to sabotage his show? Whatever the case, her attempt seemed to have failed for the most part and she departed soon enough. Jack was glad; he probably wouldn't have had very nice words for his fellow Slytherin if she had warranted reason enough for him to come and talk to her.
Just as he had started to think there was nothing that required him to intervene, though, a familiar Gryffindor girl spoke up. Jack recognized her as Griseldis Edelhardt, the prefect who had saved him from Alex Tyler's insanity his first night at Hogwarts. To his surprise, this brunette didn't try to stop Ruka - she asked if she could join him.
At once, the Slytherin felt himself bristling internally with indignance on Ruka's behalf at the sheer audacity of the prefect girl. Who went to a rock concert and then asked to go up on stage so they could share in the band's glory? Who attended a play just to try and include themselves as one of the actors? Was it being a bold, attention-seeking Gryffindor that made her so oblivious to how rude she was being by asking what she had, especially before introducing herself? Regardless of the reason, the worst part was that Jack didn't trust Ruka to have the heart to tell her no even if he may have wanted to. Well, that was what the Slytherin was there for - to help with what the fire-dancer couldn't or wouldn't do himself.
"Edelhardt! Long time no see," he called to the prefect with a grin, raising a hand in greeting as he approached. He tried to discreetly lead Gris aside so they didn't distract the rest of Ruka's audience. "Glad you seem to be enjoying your fellow second-year Gryffindor's show. Your enthusiasm to join him is much appreciated, I'm sure, but I just wanted to bring a few things to your attention first."
Still smiling amicably, Jack held up an index finger. "One - Tân has practiced his routines long and hard for years. He might make it look easy, but that choreography is anything but improvised. If you added your own steps to the mix, it might throw off his a bit. Which brings me to the next thing." A second finger flew up to join his first.
"Two - Tân needs to keep an appropriate distance from his audience in order to ensure their safety. If you tried to perform together and neither of you had practiced rehearsing with the other before, you could potentially get hurt and be in danger of being burned. I'm sure nobody would want that, especially since you're a prefect and that wouldn't reflect well on your reputation at all."
He paused, looking thoughtful. "Speaking of reputation, I have to know for my own personal curiosity..." A third finger rose to join the other two. "Three - I don't know much about martial arts, but aren't they meant to be used in defense rather than for show like fire-dancing is?" Jack tilted his head, his smile doubtful. "I know some martial artists who would be pretty annoyed if they found people were using said arts for entertainment rather than necessity or education. But is that not the case for you...?"
Despite his words, Jack's tone of voice and demeanor suggested a great deal of confidence in what he was saying. "I'm muggle-born, so maybe I'm just not familiar with how martial arts work for wizard-kind as opposed to muggle practitioners."

Surprisingly, it didn‘t even take all that long before a crowd had gathered around, cheering as they watched the routine they were presented with.
Ruka was so caught up in his performance, he only vaguely heard the small commotion going on in the crowd, eyes drifting across a young girl with her wand out and pointed at him, and for a moment he thought she was going to cast a spell at him, but nothing seemed to happen.
He noticed the students around him growing quieter in their cheering, could hear some whispers, and the Slytherin girl who had previously pointed her wand at him was slowly making her way around the crowd, probably to go ahead on her way.
Face scrunched up in slight confusion, Ruka decided not to let this little incident distract him too much; after all, he was handling real fire, and the slightest misstep could cause him to burn someone or something that really wasn‘t meant to go up in flames.
So, regaining his composure, he put on his best performance smile as he threw two of the torches up above his head, catching one with his teeth and one with his free hand.
He could hear some clapping close by as he removed the torch from between his teeth and took it back into his hand again, twirling all four of them skilfully between his fingers now.
His eyes fell on a Gryffindor girl he had mostly seen in passing, and all he really knew about her was that she was a Prefect.
As she spoke, Ruka slowed down his steps a bit to make sure he wouldn‘t lose too much concentration by listening to what she had to say, but before he could do or say anything in return, he heard a familiar voice breaking through the crowd.
Of course, he thought to himself, fondly rolling his eyes at the Slytherin boy‘s presence. It was no surprise that Jack had clearly been lingering in a shadow not far away, ready to jump at anybody trying to disturb Ruka‘s performance.
He watched as Jack guided the Gryffindor Prefect a little to the side, clearly trying to give Ruka the chance to continue his performance without distraction, but his curiosity got the better of him in no time.
With a bright smile he bowed to his audience, putting out each flame by carefully closing his mouth around them.
Once he was sure the torches were put out completely, he dropped them with the ones he hadn‘t lit at all yet before joining Jack and the girl who had introduced herself as Gris, just in time to hear the Slytherin lecturing her on why she shouldn‘t have asked to join Ruka‘s performance.
„It‘s fine, Jack,“ Ruka said with a grin as he stopped by the Slytherin‘s side and offered Gris a polite handshake. „I‘m Ruka, by the way. Tân is just my last name, and there aren‘t a lot of people who call me by it.“ He teasingly bumped Jack‘s shoulder with his own before shooting the Slytherin a grateful little smile.
After days of spending near to every waking minute with each other, Jack knew him well enough to realise that there was no way Ruka would have ever told Gris that she couldn‘t join his performance, and it was good to have someone who was able to stand up for the things that were important to him when he himself couldn‘t.
Having spent all his life practicing his Fire Dance routines, having a practical stranger come and join them, almost felt a bit disrespectful to his dad who was the only one Ruka had ever shared a routine with, and as much as Gris seemed like a nice girl with good intentions, he wasn‘t sure he was ready to share this particular part of him with anybody else yet.
„But Jack is right,“ he admitted towards Gris, smiling a little to show he wasn‘t upset with her asking to join. „I‘ve been practicing this routine for years. I wouldn‘t want to accidentally set your robes on fire or anything like that.“
He huffed a little at Jack‘s remark about Martial Arts being more for self defence than for show. Obviously the Slytherin boy had to find some faulty logic in something the Gryffindor girl had to say, there was no surprise there.
Not knowing much about Martial Arts himself though, he decided not to comment on it.
Instead, Ruka rolled his eyes at Jack, a fond smile on his lips. „You‘re just scared she could beat me up with some of those tricks she was talking about, and steal my spotlight that way,“ he teased to avoid Gris potentially taking any personal offence in Jacks remark, no matter how much sense the Slytherin was making.
Turning back to Gris for a moment, Ruka smiled encouragingly and shrugged his shoulders lightly. „I have to admit, I don‘t know much about Martial Arts, not in the Muggle World and not in the Wizarding World either, but I have heard they are more about self defence as well. I‘d be curious to know how they could be used for performance arts?“

A Dance With Fire
Just after she had promised the Gryffindor that she would stop by, she realized that this would be difficult. With Jack around Ruka all the time she wasn't sure what would happen if she really showed up. It was true, what she had told the other Slytherin in her letter, she wasn't going to waste her energy on avoiding him but she also didn't want another courtyard situation.
So Opeila was happy about the croud since she really had been curious to see the Gryffindor's performance and she wasn't disappointed. Her respect for Ruka grew with every second, his talent with the torches impressed her a lot. She had seen a fire performance in a muggle circus before, but this was a lot better, she found.
Her eyes widened a little when Kara stepped forwards, shouting something she couldn't hear in the croud and then pointed her wand at Ruka. Was she crazy? Whatever she had been trying didn't work, but still, if she would have distracted Ruka, he might have hurt himself. Opeila exhaled when nothing like that happened.
Ruka's performance was interrupted again when a Gryffindor girl stepped forward and suggested to perform together. Opeila hoped for a little gap where she could talk to Ruka for a second, but when Jack also joined the others she sighed. Later.
Instead she glanced at Kara who was walking away. Was she embarassed? Suddenly Opeila felt a little bad. She hadn't been very nice to the girl on their first encounter.
"Hey, Capricorn!" She slowly walked towards the other girl.

"Hey, Capricorn!" She heard.
She recognized the voice as Opeila's. She turned her head, looking at her. She knew that the girl hd wanted nothing to do with her, but Opelia's voice sounded sincere.
"I know that you don't want much to do with me, but hello!" Kara responded in her silky voice.
She kept on walking along till she arrived at her small hangout area beside the Great Lake. She took her bag off the ground and took her violin case with her. She didn't know if Opelia followed her, but Kara guessed that she didn't. She looked around the cluster of trees for the one she always climbed. The one she always climbed was a large oak with many jutting branches and since it was winter at the time, many dead leaves. When she spotted the oak, she put her violin case on her back and holding her bag with her teeth, she started climbing.
She made it to her branch and started humming a soft tune. The song was sweet and serene, and the tune drifted around her ears. Kara took her violin and hung it on a branch beside her. Dropping her bag out of her teeth, she leaned against the tree.
Grabbing her book out of her bag, she started reading, still humming her soft little song. Kara looked out against the sky, it was a bright blue with small whisps of white for clouds. She felt the wind blow gently against her bare skin and hair. She smiled and breathed in deeply, and smiled, looking back down at her book, losing herself in the story.

"I know that you don't want much to do with me, but hello!", the other Slytherin said and walked on. Opeila just followed her to the oak that her housemate then started to climb on. She stood there looking at the other girl. "Wait a minute, I don't really want a conversation where we have to yell at each other. And I never said that I don't want much to do with you, that is what you are thinking. I don't really know you after all, even though my first impression was... uh... doesn't really matter, you get what I mean anyway." Opeila put down her bag, that had felt like it had been getting heavier every minute. "Distracting an artist, who works with fire, is dangerous, you know? Ever been to a muggle circus? I have. Once a three year old had run away from his mother and somehow gotten into the ring.
There was an artist in there who's performance involved fire as well. The child got too close and he lost control of his torches. His hair started to burn. He was injured so badly in the end, he couldn't perform ever again.
Ruka knows what he is doing." She picked up her bag again. "And uh... maybe you should learn the spells before actively trying to use them.", she added. She sent the other Slytherin a friendly smile. "I didn't know that you were taking my mood the other day so personally. I am a quite moody person."

Ruka knows what he is doing." She picked up her bag again. "And uh... maybe you should learn the spells before actively trying to use them.", she added. She sent the other Slytherin a friendly smile. A Dance With Fire
When Griseldis heard a boy's familiar voice calling her surname from behind, it really got her attention because it was the first time there was someone around her age who would call her surname instead of "Gris". She turned around and saw it was the first-year Slytherin brunette with a trickster like grin on his face. That smile reminded Griseldis a lot of her older cousin Henry who was also a Slytherin who always teased about her clumsiness, he was a 7th year-student now and currently very busy in his final year of formal magical education so they rarely met up in Hogwarts, but at least he did visit her in the Hospital Wing after the chaotic Masquerade Ball to make sure she was alright. They were family, after all, no matter how far their distance was. They would always care for one another.Interacting with @Jack Burnett @Ruka Tân
"Hello, Jack. Nice seeing you again.", Griseldis greeted him back with a polite smile. She then noticed that he seemed to try to get her slightly to the side further from the young performer which she didn't mind because being too near to someone who was juggling fire torches at the moment might not really be a good idea. So she set her focus on the young Slytherin and hear what he had to say. But what he told her made her realized what she did was considered to be a rude activity. She let out a soft gasp and placed her right hand barely to her lips, "Oh dear, that was really rude of me, I didn't know that but you're right.", she looked at Jack and said in a sheepish tone, her cheeks were slightly pink out of embarrassment due to her recent action, "Thanks, Jack, if you didn't stop me I would have ruined his performance."
Right after Griseldis said that the Gryffindor boy already finished his performance and came to join them. The Fire Touch Performer finally told his name was Ruka, and Tân was just his surname. She accepted his handshake of course. She watched as Ruka bumped Jack's shoulder and teases, it was obvious that they were friends. Griseldis quickly bowed to him and apologized, "I'm so sorry, Ruka! I really didn't know, I thought that joining in the performance can bring more joy for people to watch but I held no ill intention of stealing your spotlight. I hope you forgive my rudeness." after she apologized she looked up and gave her compliment this time, "I know I already said this but, your juggling skills are really amazing, truly wicked!" She gave Ruka with both hands doing the thumbs up.
Then both Jack and Ruka asked her out of their curiosity about Martial Arts but Jack believed that Martial Arts were mainly used for defense which wasn't completely true somehow, then he told her that he was a Muggle-born which kind of surprised her a bit because she thought he was more like a Pure-blood since he acted like he was so knowledgeable than her. "Well, Jack. That was a bit stereotype because there is still more to Martial Arts, in ancient times it wasn't really used to just defending or protecting, there were a lot of Martial Artists who also used their talents and show their skills to people not in a sense of seeking fame but to show their pride and honor. Nowadays, there are many different kinds of reasons for learning the Martial Arts, some learned for self-defense or for the military and law enforcement applications. For competition or physical, mental and spiritual development and even for entertainment. If you don't believe me, you can check on the internet when you return home during the holidays, you'll see there are indeed Performers who are Martial Artists as well like the Shaolin for example, they are a very famous group of Kung Fu fighters but they do many Martial arts Performances around the Muggle world, you will be able to find some videos on YouTube."
Griseldis paused for a brief while, then pointed at herself to them, "I'm a Half-blood by the way, and it doesn't matter if you're a Wizard or a Muggle, Martial arts will always be the same, it really depends on how you use it."

"It's fine, Jack," Ruka's voice drifted over to them after putting out the last of his flames. Jack made a face, but he had long since stopped trying to get Ruka to call him something else.
"What's fine? I was just bringing some things to her attention. You know, reminding her of stuff she might have already known but forgotten in her sudden enthusiasm to join you." He crossed his arms across his chest and tried to scowl, but it was tainted with a bit of smirk. "Don't you 'it's fine' me like I'm some bodyguard trying to run her off with force and intimidation tactics. Why would I do that to a prefect, anyway?" He threw his arms up dramatically as if giving his own performance. "Honestly! The mere suggestion is outrageous!"
However, when Gris began to apologize to Ruka, Jack slowly turned to look at her, disbelief etched all over his face. "'Ruined his performance'?" he repeated. "'Stealing his spotlight'? Now you're just making me look bad. I said nothing of the sort!" the Slytherin insisted. "I don't know where you got those ideas, because all I was trying to tell you was that your impromptu collaboration could have resulted in falls, burns, and other injuries. Also, I wanted to remind you that you had your prefect reputation to think of. Who said anything about stealing spotlight?"
He shifted his weight to his other leg in a casual stance as he listened to the Gryffindor girl explain more to him about martial arts. He nodded in acknowledgment of her words, genuinely interested in the facts she was telling him, but also getting more curious at the same time.
"Oh, yeah...come to think of it, I think I might have seen or read something once about martial arts used for entertainment before. Like, um...what was that one..." He pasused, trying to remember. "Cap...capa..capapoeira? Capoeira! That - that one dance type that makes you use your arms a lot. And I guess there's also dance fighting, but I don't know if that's a martial art or not..."
Tilting his head inquiringly at Gris, he asked, "So what kind do you do, Edelhardt? Do you use it for entertainment a lot?"
