Avery gave him a small smile. Glad that he didn't make fun of her for a foolish daydream of a lifetime that she knew no longer existed for her. It all changed that day her mother basically left her world and ripped everything out of it. Though the good times are what she held the closest. Those were the times that she was strong. Loved more than she could imagine. Cared for instead of being left to fend for herself as her parents buried themselves in work.

Avery was amazed by the scene that shifted before her eyes. Winter. One that she had never seen before. It was beautiful with snow falling gently from the sky and landing on majestic pine trees. Even the cool breeze that filtered through the air made it all feel more real. Tangible. Avery drank it all in. Even though it wouldn't last forever, she knew she would never lose this moment.

"Me too. I don't think I've seen such a beautiful snow in such a long time." She commented as she closed her eyes and listened. Letting the gentle sound of falling snow and the slosh of water beneath her to swallow her whole.

Her eyes opened when Mikey spoke of never forgetting an 'unforgettable ride'. He wasn't wrong. Far from it. He was right. This ride reminded her of the good times. That people still cared enough about her to know if she was okay, and that was everything to her. Winter alone had sealed the deal. The quiet and peaceful promise it kept within itself spread to them. Reminding them of the unforgettable adventure they were having. One that she hoped neither of them would forget.

xxxNow that Jarden had got it into his head to actually remember how to behave like a normal, functioning member of society, he forced his mind to go back to the present. But it's normal to second guess and be nervous you are going to mess something up, right?

xxxUsually, Jarden never had to worry about being in his head for too long, Ms. Lorelai and Mayah just conversing with each other whilst he stared off into an effervescent version of head space. Now, being with people during the majority of his waking hours, it was a harsh transition for the usual leniency for his brain's frequent side tracking. My welcome to the real world, I guess.

xxxA slight queasiness went through him, be it from the slight rocking of the boat, the altogether suffocating fragrances, or the ever-present nerves, Jarden was still trying to figure out. The smells were not, on the whole, too bad, and they would have been comforting if not for the sheer potency of them. Although, rain was not one of those things capable of being overpowering. Other than that, it was mostly the colours engulfing his senses, especially the pink tinge to it all that Jarden was less than accustomed to. Why is it that love is so often associated with either red or pink?

xxxThe romantic-ness of it all made sense, but it was still quite odd to Jarden, one often preferring understatement to over-exaggeration, though he thought it would be nice to find a middle ground between the two. A continual struggle it was, finding a middle ground between two sharply contrasting things, despite it sounding rather straightforward.

xxxWatching how people reacted to every little thing in a conversation was helpful, but only when you could accurately gauge if the feeling was negative or positive, as sometimes surprise seemed quite neutral. All in all, Jarden had decided, it was a sure way to overthink each and every life choice. Then again, he did that most days in his free time anyway, so it was hardly a change.

xxxHe sat down beside her, overthinking even that simple act. Not too close, or it would be weird, but practically hugging the side of the boat would be weird, too. Somewhere in the middle, as it is with most things, I suppose.

xxxA slightly awed silence permeated the air, both of them simply taking in the scenery. Jarden was particularly fascinated by the fireflies, bio-luminescence had always been intriguing, nature's way of sparkling without the sun involved.

xxxSilence was okay, but alas, it never lasted long when one felt they had been rude. "Sorry if I was a bit cold or... imprudent? earlier. Well, if you count earlier as a matter of seconds ago, that is. I suppose I was just nervous about meeting a new person in a setting that feels as though it was made for blundering mess-ups. It truly is nice to meet you, though." A sense of bashfulness washed over him, rude and imprudent were words he strove to never have himself described as, and it just so seemed ignorance could bring about both in a few moments of conversation.

Everything about Lucille put Livia as at home as she could be on an enchanted gondola, surrounded by images of the sea and little glowing creatures. As the boat pushed forward, Livia stared with wide, captivated eyes at each sea creature that swam over the duo. She remained dourly uneducated in all regards of oceanic organisms – those of both mundane and magical calibres – but, despite that ignorance, her heart fluttered excitedly with all she could learn even while sitting still in a boat.

Occasionally, her glaucous gaze would dart to observe Lucille's pulchritudinous features – and not just the physical. Her attention hung, rapt, on the serene lilt to Lucille's words, the courteousness of the vocabulary with which she spoke, the confident but not bumptious manner with which she acted. Nonetheless, just as quickly as Livia eased herself into this conversation – this traverse, too – the smallest of things forced her into a state of stupor. She so rarely thought of her own appearance past the remembrance that she must be orderly and decorous, so the word beautiful as a descriptor for herself was as rare as the word 'antediluvian' might be in modern English. Such an instance of the word used for herself did not lie within her active recollection, in fact.

Still unsure of the proper way to respond to such a word, Livia smiled but had to stop herself from almost preening. She forced her head to duck, her attention sliding sideways to catch on the wall as the boat continued to move. Finally, she murmured, 'That's awfully kind of you, Lucille. Thank you.' She paused, deciding that, this time, she would properly return the commendation. 'If I may... I must also profess that you remind me of summer. Calm, kind, like a shining beacon of light. Please do forgive me if that was too forward, but I must uphold the veracity of my sentiment.'

The rest of Lucille's words helped ground Livia – she nodded, having very little recollection of a beach other than evening walks at shops in Batumi. Swimming was most often an improper endeavour in which she did not enjoy partaking. 'Not necessarily. I wouldn't say I'm one for swimming, but I like to watch my brother enjoy himself. However, watching the sun set over endless waters, it almost rivals the beauty of sunset in the mountains. I would agree with you, though; I would much prefer a mountainous summer.' She halted before she could discompose herself with the addition of the mountains' reminiscence of home. Such a thought caused the muscles in her throat to tighten like the threads keeping a burlap sack shut tight, but she swallowed, and forced herself to stare at the fast-arriving autumnal aperture.

As the boat moved forward, Livia narrowed her eyes. The sunset cast golden rays over the boat, including over Livia and Lucille – now she had a proper compliment. She tried to slow down the onslaught of words that beckoned against the bones of her teeth: 'I don't think I've ever seen anyone whose eyes appear more lovely in the golden daylight.' She had done it. A small, pleased smile crossed her lips, but then the horrifying pumpkins that dotted the walls came closer, and her smile faded just as quickly as it had arrived, the corners of Livia's lips drawing ever downwards. '...Dare? Oh, dear. I mustn't.'

She cast a quick glance at Lucille. 'Unless, of course, that is what you would prefer?'

One of Livia's words seemed to make Lucille perk up a little. Light. Or, more specifically, a beacon of light. A soft smile spread upon her face, as if she had just shared an inside joke with herself. Before Livia could react, though, Lucille spoke. "Oddly enough, that's what my name means. Light. Or light in the grove, whichever you prefer," she said with a little laugh. She leaned back, quite relaxed. It evidently hadn't been too forward a statement, but Lucille let the calm atmosphere express that for her. From Livia's description of summer, Lucille treasured the compliment, the comparison nestling deep within her like a warm sip of tea.

From up ahead, a beacon of golden light shone, as if a spotlight was welcoming them. It was warm but accompanied by a cool breeze, giving the unique effect of autumn at dusk. When they passed through to the next scene, the light enveloping them seemed to cradle them further. Lucille leaned forward now, curiosity and calmness combining to produce quiet interest. All around them, jack-o-lanterns dotted the banks of the river, and Lucille found herself giggling at the strange sight. It reminded her of Halloween, of course, and Halloween reminded her of candy and costumes, both incredibly pleasant thoughts.

She glanced at Livia to observe her reaction to their surroundings, only to find that the girl seemed to be struggling to say something, as if her mind was so full of thoughts she couldn't decide which one to let out. Lucille tilted her head curiously, but before she could ask, Livia blurted out a compliment.

Lucille's eyes were certainly her most prominent feature, the one thing anyone who complimented her tended to mention. But, for some reason, it took her a second to respond this time. A slight red flush crept up her cheeks, and she wasn't sure why. Perhaps it was the moment, and the way Livia had spoken so suddenly. Or perhaps it was the smile upon her face, an almost proud expression upon it, as if she had succeeded in doing something. That must be it. Lucille hadn't had someone compliment her with this look upon their face before. "Thank you," she said softly; for once unable to find a multitude of words to say. Instead, it seemed her reaction could be summed up in those two.

However, before the words had properly left her mouth, Livia's expression soured. Her eyes left Lucille's, looking over her shoulder instead, and Lucille glanced back to see what might have caused this. Behind them was a jack-o-lantern that read DARE, and Lucille couldn't help but giggle. The silent moment was gone, now returning to the regular jolts of fun they'd been having. "It's part of the experience, isn't it?" Lucille said brightly, thinking of a dare. Her eyes darted around the area, looking for inspiration. After all, what dare could one do when in a little gondola? She certainly didn't think Livia would be willing to do a more 'romantic' dare and, truthfully, suggesting something of that sort seemed a little awkward.

"Pick up one of those," she said finally, pointing at one of the many candles that drifted through the water along with them. "Or blow one out. Whichever you can do without falling," she added quickly. "In return, I shall let you choose a truth or a dare for me. Whichever you'd like." There was warmth in her voice as she looked at Livia now, almost scanning her face for clues. The last thing she wanted was to give Livia a dare she might not wish to do, and so her eyes remained locked on her, ignoring their surroundings, especially the jack-o-lanterns that called for a kiss or confession. That certainly didn't seem like the proper route for their "date" to go.

Light. Livia's lips curled upwards at Lucille's definition of her name. Moments such as this, when things just laid themselves into a neat line, when the gears of life just so happened to neatly click together, brought a rush of warmth over her. Of course the concept of light would name a girl who cast radiance into even the shadows of Livia's uncertainty! There was simply no name that would have served better. 'Light in the grove – what a beautiful sight. Golden hour amidst the trees, the shadows of leaves dappling the grass below... lovely.'

She declined to deign to divulge the definition of her own appellative. From the classical Latin, its root meant 'blue' or 'envious', something that had once caused her to ask her father why he would advocate for such a lachrymose connotation. He had cited Livia Drusilla, a powerful woman in Roman history, which had momentarily assuaged Livia's disappointment; nonetheless, even a grand historical tale (if she'd had one) would not have surpassed the beauty of light.

The notion did not disappoint her, though. She had no desire to remove the spotlight from Lucille. Her small, perhaps deliberative, almost cautious smile returned to her lips when Lucille thanked her for the compliment; her eyes sparkled and lifted upwards alongside the corners of her lips. It took much fortitude not to simply beam, but as such a blatant exhibit of ebullience was beneath her, she contented herself with simply drumming her fingers together as she finally tore her gaze from Lucille's profile. The jack-o-lanterns that dotted the ride's waters and the walls were beautiful, of course, as anything was coated in colour, but they did not compare to the luminous, bewitching glamour of the girl Livia now desired to denominate 'friend'.

Without a doubt, Lucille was correct: the purveyance of new things remained a strong objective of this endeavour; nonetheless, even Livia, who prided herself on seeming competent in all things, struggled to acquaint herself with the comfort the open-minded often preached. She gazed upon Lucille, intrigued, as her accomplice began to speak; she requested Livia collect a candle – the idea of light once again came to mind. Considering what she could have suggested, this was not so dreadful. Livia nodded, her lips pressed together in determination, as she eschewed all semblance of propriety and leant over the edge of the gondola. It swayed as if whispering a threat; she pointedly ignored its additional movement and let her fingers dip into the clear, surprisingly comfortable water. One of her legs hooked underneath the seat to keep herself from falling in. She couldn't stop herself from smiling yet again as her fingertips were carried along in the current; finally, she recalled her objective and snatched up a candle, her heartbeat still thrumming from the thrill of the balancing act. The more difficult part was returning to her seated position; her hand (and the lit candle between her fingers) went swinging wildly as she used her leg as leverage, finally collapsing on the cushion. In her frenzy, the air and movement had blown the candle out. Taking a deep breath in an attempt to steady her heartbeat that rammed against her rattling ribcage, Livia cast a triumphant smirk at Lucille. 'Candle acquired – and blown out, if even due to technicality.'

Success, victory, triumph by whatever name it might be known, seemed to fuel Livia more than she had previously known. She could not conceal her exuberance, nor the warmth in her voice, as she offered a dare of her own. 'Try to stand and balance on the seat. Like... as if you were standing on a broom! I can move.'

She awaited Lucille's attempt, if she would follow through, with wide eyes and a close-lipped smile that threatened to show teeth if she weren't careful.

The boat would beat onwards, sailing smoothly into a room coated with velvety darkness. Livia was unable to suppress a giddy gasp. Although she knew it was not real, not in the dead of summer, not in the dead of day, she could not help but immerse herself in the faux reality. Pine trees coated with the snowflakes cascading out of the midnight tenebrosity, her breath puffing up small clouds in the air in front of her. 'You know, if winter were always like this, I might be inclined to favour it,' she mused, turning to Lucille. 'And, of course, were it not so cold. But imagine – friends curled up in front of a golden fire, warming our hands around mugs of hot chocolate while we listen to the radio. It sounds so cosy...'
