Can’t Wait to Grow
The greenhouse smelled like wet soil and fresh leaves. Skylar took a long inhale and paused by the door. After stepping in, the fresh air and the morning sunlight fell against her skin. The feeling of something growing reminded her of something deep and familiar inside.
The castle had been strange, but the greenhouse was the opposite. It was alive. She could not wait to throw herself into the class.
Skylar brushed her fingers along the leaves. She looked at a nearby lovage plant and remembered its fragrance like celery. It used to grow by the window back home. Her father used it for potions, but Baxter, the house elf, added it to the soups when he cooked food. Skylar had tasted it many times, but she never used it for anything else.
She was careful not to bruise the leaves. Then, she moved toward a workstation. Her eyes were already scanning the rows of plants. She stopped at Mandrakes.
“Right.”
The first plant that made her love planting was Mandrakes. Because it looked more alive than other plants. Mandrakes showed people how very alive a plant can be. It made her feel like a mother who takes care of a baby that was crying for attention when she took care of it.
Next, she saw Valerian, tall and looking gentle but powerful if handled wrong. Bubotubers swell like storing too much food inside. It was oozing something unpleasant like she remembered.
Skylar wore her gloves and apron. She cannot hide the smile on her lips. She had seen all these plants before, but she didn’t know much about their benefits. It made her feel thrilled like she wanted to try her hand at them right away.
When the professor began explaining the dangers of the feeding plants, Skylar moved her quill as always. Her notes were neat and precise. She already knew most of its functions, but she wanted to write everything down anyway.
When instructed to check the soil around the bubotuber, Skylar leaned low. She inspected the roots carefully.
“Rich, dark, and still moist…umm, not overfed. Good sign.” She muttered softly to herself.
Her partner gave her a curious look.
“You’ve done this before?”
Skylar nodded, eyes still on the plant.
“My family grows healing herbs. I used to take care of it in my gardens.”
It wasn’t braging. It was just the truth. However, there was something inside her that felt stirred in the chest. She thought that was probably her pride.
As the class continued, a few students jumped back when a mandrake screamed or when the smell of the bubotuber got too strong, but Skylar leaned closer. She studied the movement and the pulse of life under the soil. She didn’t flinch. She observed.
After the lesson ended, her gloves were cover with soil and her notebook filled with small sketches and labels. She stayed longer than most students. Before leaving the class, she brushed her fingertips over a clay pot as she passed.
“See you tomorrow,” she whispered, not to anyone in particular, but to the plants.

Aisling had been taking note of what Professor Toussaint-Fleischer had been instructing the class. She could see that one of her classmates, a Slytherin girl who wore her ash-brown hair into two braids, was admiring the plants, as though she had connected with them before. Aisling smiled at that. This had to be second nature to the Slytherin girl.
That assumption was confirmed later in class when the Slytherin girl was overseeing the bubotubers with her partner. Aisling noticed this. The Slytherin girl's enthusiasm for flora reminded Aisling of her connection to fauna. After all, her first instance of magic revolved around birds, her favorite animal. Maybe the girl had something similar with her first instance of magic, but with plants instead.
When the professor ended the lesson for the day, Aisling noticed the girl staying within the greenhouse a bit longer that most of their peers. Her heart raced at the prospect of talking to the girl. Though they already seemed to have something in common, Aisling's social anxiety couldn't help but rear it's ugly head. Aisling took a deep breath. Remember what Mum said, she thought to herself, find something you like about them and compliment them on it. Even a small compliment can brighten someone's day.
Aisling walked over to the Slytherin girl, even though her legs trembled slightly. She swallowed before speaking. "Hi ... um ... hi," she stammered, "I ... I noticed how uh, how um, how much you ... you knew about the plants here. I like that ... that you like wildlife, too." Aisling could feel beads of swear line her hairline, and she couldn't tell if it was from her nerves of from the warmth of the greenhouse.

Skylar took a half turn toward the voice.
The Hufflepuff girl stood there with ginger hair glowing like sunlight. Her freckles bright against flushed cheeks. She looked like she’d just fought a battle with her nerves to say that one sentence, and Skylar knew exactly how that felt.
Then, Skylar turned fully toward the girl. There was a small thought crossing her mind. Maybe it was because her family had all been in Hufflepuff, so she felt an odd kind of connection already.
Even though Skylar was never great at small talk, she had to admit. The girl had picked the perfect place to approach her. Whether it was a garden, a greenhouse, or a patch of grass in the woods, Skylar always felt most like herself surrounded by green. Nature gave her courage in ways people never could.
Skylar tilted her head slightly, eyes softening.
“You like nature too?” she asked gently.
She could already see the answer in Aisling’s eyes before the girl even nodded. Skylar’s smile grew small and genuine.
“I like plants,” she said after a pause. “They don’t really talk, but… if you listen, you can understand what they want. You can tell when they’re happy or upset, too, if you pay attention.”
She wiped her hands on her apron, cleaned the soil off a little bit. She added with a nervous laugh.
“Sorry, did that sound too weird?”
She held out her hand in greeting, her voice calm but friendly.
“I’m Skylar, by the way.”
Her gaze flicked briefly toward the fluttering leaves nearby.
“If you ever need help with the plant parts of class, I don’t mind.”
The silence that followed felt a little too still, so Skylar filled it with a small kind smile.
“Actually,” she said softly.
“I like animals too. My aunt used to talk about them a lot, but I’ve never had much experience with real ones.”
It wasn’t loud or pushy. Her tone has a steady warmth. Enough for someone shy to feel welcome without pressure.

Aisling shook her head. "N-no," she answered,"it ... it doesn't sound weird at all." She smiled. "Some ... sometimes, I feel like animals can do that, too. But I ... I don't have parselmouth." She paused for a second. "I ... I like to think that all animals, magical and non-magical, speak to us in their own way." She shrugged, as though it wasn't a big deal if anyone cared if she thought that way. "May ... maybe your aunt would think similarly."
"Skylar," Aisling said, "that ... that's a pretty name." She cleared her throat. "My ... my name is ... is Aisling." She shook Skylar's and, albeit a tad weakly. She quickly realized how calloused Skylar's hands were. These were hands that worked diligently. At what, Aisling wasn't entirely certain. "Do ... do you work with plants a lot?" she asked, "I mean, you ... you know a lot about them. But I ... I don't know if it was, like, em, like researching, or if you take a hands-on approach." She paused. Oh God, she thought, I worded that all wrong! "I mean, you ... you know, either ... either way is great. I just ... I didn't know if there was a specific way that you like to ... to learn about plants." She took a deep breath as she rubbed her palm against the back of her neck.

Aisling’s mention of Parselmouth made something flicker behind Skylar’s eyes.
Her hands stilled, fingers tightening slightly.
For a heartbeat, she wasn’t standing in the greenhouse anymore. She was back in the garden at home. Her parents’ faces pale with fear, and something close to disgust.
She swallowed, forcing the memory down where it belonged. No one here needed to know about that day. Whatever it had been, accident, or an instinct. She didn’t want the thought of it reminding her of the truth she kept trying to forget that she was the black sheep of her kind.
Skylar blinked, refocusing on Aisling, the faintest tremor still in her voice.
“There wasn’t really a specific way,” she said softly. “I just… grew up in a garden, that’s all.”
Her gaze dropped briefly to her hands, as if only just noticing the roughness Aisling had seen.
“I guess I like to get hands-on, or feel things grow. Books help, but soil teaches differently.”
She brushed her fingers together, soil still clinging to the lines of her skin.
“Taking care of plants needs dedication. It’s slower. Messier. But I like that. It reminds me that everything takes time. Plants. People … maybe even courage.”
Her gaze lifted again, steady warmth.
“You sound like you’ve spent time around animals before,” she said gently. “Do you have any? magical? or non-magical?”
There was no judgment in her tone, only quiet curiosity. The kind that didn’t dig, but invited. The kind that said: I want to understand you, if you’ll let me.

Aisling looked at Skylar's hand brush against the soil as she explained her reasons for being hands-on. "That ... that's grand, Skylar," she said, "growing up in a garden must've taught you about taking care for plants. Seems to have given you, like, in a way, like a perspective on life." She smiled. "I agree, in a way," she added, "that ... that nature can give us wisdom. You know, if you look for it."
Aisling shook her head. "No, I ... I don't have any pets," she answered, "I wish, though. I used to pester my mum and dad about getting a bird, or at least a pet, but I guess Dad said something about there not being enough room in the apartment." She paused for a moment. "But I ... I do like to spend time with animals when I can," she said, "in the outskirts of where I live, there's some cattle that I pet sometimes. I help out at an animal shelter in the next village a few times a month. But mostly, I ... I love birds. They're colourful, melodic, and well, they ... they can fly! With no one to tell them where to go or trying to really stop them." She smiled at the thought, remembering when her first instance of magic happened. "All the more reason why it was amazing when they flocked to me the first time I did magic," she said, "who knew me just trying to get a good look at a bluebird would make other birds flock to me?" She chuckled a bit before shaking her head. "But um, yeah," she added, swallowing, "I ... I wished I worked with magical creatures, but I didn't even know they existed until a few months ago! Have you seen or been near any magical creatures before?"

Skylar’s lips curved slightly, the kind of smile that seemed to come from remembering something.
“Magical creatures…” she murmurs, tilting her head as though tasting the words.
“I’ve seen a few. Mostly the ones that wander near my gardens or hide in the trees. They don’t always show themselves, but you can feel when they’re there.”
Her gaze drifted toward the glass roof where the light reflected into her eyes. Her voice softened, almost blending into the hum of the greenhouse.“There was a bowtruckle once,” She then paused with giggled.
“It's a tiny thing, shy and barely the length of my hand. It was like the guardian of the tree in my garden. My mum said they only appeared to people who were gentle enough not to frighten them.”
A faint, faraway look flickered across her face. The memory carried both fondness and something quieter, a shadow that lingered behind her words.
“Sometimes, I think…” she continued, “the magical ones aren’t that different from the normal ones. They just… hide more carefully.”
She looked back at Aisling again.
“They never harmed me, but they didn’t like me either.” She paused, as though the admission cost her something. Then she looked up again, a small smile blooming through the silence. “ You sound like someone they’d trust, though.”
Skylar’s smile deepened as she added,
“I mean..The birds you mentioned...I don’t think they gather around just anyone. Maybe they knew you’d never hurt them. Maybe that’s why they came to you.”
Skylar brushed a leaf off her sleeve, then asked quietly,
“If you could have any magical creature for a companion, any at all, what would you choose?, Aisling.”
The question lingered the air in between, soft as falling pollen, the kind of question that made her seem not just kind, but deeply present.

"You ... you think so?" Aisling asked, "about the magical creatures, I mean. Being so close by?" She thought about that being potentially true to Limerick. She could certainly picture a flobberworm hiding in the mud after a rainy day in the greener parts of the city, a poltergeist lurking in a vacant alleyway hoping to scare a passerby, or even a griffin flying high in the sky only for Muggles on the ground to mistake it for a bird or plane. "And what makes you think bowtruckles don't like you?" Aisling asked, "you seemed pretty gentle with the plants during the lesson. Or maybe you just caught them on a bad day? If they're like any creature, I'm sure they could be cranky sometimes."
Aisling pondered Skylar's question. "I mean, I love all animals," she said, "I feel like it wouldn't be fair to just have one be important." She paused. "But," she added, "if I had to, probably an owl. They've always gotten my attention and it's a shame I barely ever see them at night when I'm home. When I had my first instance of magic, though, a baby owl let me take it home with me. Of course, there was no way Mum and Dad would've let me keep it, but it was amazing besides that." She smiled at the memory. "Maybe that's why I've been so drawn to them lately." Aisling paused briefly. "How about you, Skylar? What animal companion would you want to have?

Skylar shrugged her shoulders, long sigh.
“I’m not sure. Bowtruckles were like a guardian of a tree, as I told you, so when I tried to take care of the plants near their tree, maybe they thought I was going to destroy their home.”
Skylar was scratching her head for a bit.
“I didn't try to connect with them that much. My eyes were always on the plants. The Bowtruckles always gave me a grumpy face, or maybe it was cranky like you said." She giggled.
Skylar listened to Aisling answer, admired how a girl remembers things. Before she began to ask herself the same question as Aisling, she thought for a moment, her eyes drifting toward the wet soil near the flower pots.
“Maybe…a toad.” she said softly.
Skylar gave an embarrassed smile. “They’re not flashy like owls, but they’re really helpful."
Skylar pointed her finger at some leaves that had a small hole in them.
"Toads like to eat bugs, so it really prevents the plants from getting destroyed by many insects."
She thought in silence, digging into her memory about them. Then, she began to laugh.
"I really enjoyed it when I saw them jumping around the pond like they belonged to the earth and water.”
Her laugh was loud, as if someone was tickling her. Then, she realized she was being herself too much. Skylar brushed, embarrassed, and expressed the awkwardness on her face.

Aisling chuckled slightly. "It sounds like the bowtruckles were a bit over-protective," she said, "how often did you go over to that tree? Maybe they just weren't used to you going there as often." From her time exploring Limerick, she knew that wildlife had a tendency to be fickle, especially when someone new entered their habitat. And the only wildlife Aisling had ever been able to interact with before she went to Hogwarts were non-magical. She could only imagine how territorial magical animals were.
Aisling giggled along with Skylar. "Yeah, toads ... toads are actually cute," she said, "they get looked over for frogs, but I think they have their own charm, too. Even their croaks are melodic in a way. Kinda like when birds sing." She smiled, before noticing that Skylar had stopped abruptly, like she had caught herself in the middle of something.. Aisling furrowed her eyebrows. "You grand there?" she asked, "you okay, I mean." She cleared her throat. Considering she had only met a couple people at Hogwarts that were from Ireland, her home, Aisling knew she was going to have to translate when she mindlessly used Irish slang around others.
