Bit o' Snow
︵‿︵‿୨ Dated: Jan 16th, Midday ୧‿︵‿︵
Being back at Hogwarts had been like a breath of fresh air for the young Ravenclaw. Returning had been on Lark's mind since she had gotten home... and been even more prominent about halfway through the holiday break. There was a lull between two of her classes and Lunch so instead of heading to the Great Hall, Lark took a detour outside and into the Courtyard. Keeping a hand on her leather bag to keep it from swinging against her hip, Lark's boots clacked on the frozen stone walkway passing by others enjoying the unusually sunny winter day. Of course she expected others to be out here trying to drink in the sunshine while it graced this part of snowy Scotland.
Waving to a couple of other first years she recognized from Transfiguration class, Lark zeroed in on a spot a little further away from everyone else. There was part of the stone wall that opened up enough for her to take a seat on the sill. Perfect! As she settled into her spot, carefully pulling out her journal from her bag and placing it on the inner part of the large opening to the covered walkway so it would be protected if it started to snow. Sitting back and pulling her feet up against the wall, resting the souls of her boots onto the stonework, Lark adjusted her cloak so she could sit a bit more comfortably and draw.
Although right now was a good opportunity for people watching... especially since her attention had been captured by a group of Gryffindor girls surrounding a Hufflepuff boy. He seemed to be nervously talking to a rather red faced fourth year. Trouble in paradise? Lark couldn't help but try and listen in on their conversation. Normally she would tune things out and feel embarrassed to be so nosy but today she felt in a rather curious mood.
"I..I.. I did write you over break-"
"Oh?! Did you? Then why didn't I get any ah' yer letters huh?"
"Well... I mean.. I-"
"That's what I thought!" The girl gave a dramatic eyeroll before crossing her arms over her chest and leaning towards the boy.
"I..I really did! Listen I just.."
"What? You what!?"
"Well I wanted to tell you in person is all-"
Goodness. Okay maybe this was a bit too personal. Lark felt her cheeks flush as she focused her attention back to her journal, sifting through the pages of notes and doodles. Some were hers and some were her Grandpa's. It was all she had left of him... All that anyone had left of him. Before he passed all of his personal objects had mysteriously disappeared. Her Gran had kept it rather hush hush and of course her father had been extremely distraught. It had caused a massive rift with the family for a couple years until her mother announced Lark was heading to Hogwarts. Rubbing her hands together, almost cursing choosing to wear finger-less gloves but happy she could hold her pencils easier to sketch, the silver haired girl found an empty page to pour her thoughts onto.
Finding her mind drifting in and out of a dream like state, fantastical situations and creatures coming to mind alongside what her life may be like in years to come at Hogwarts, Lark's eyes scanned the Courtyard, avoiding the prior... situation the Huffleboy had found himself in. As they slowly glanced over her fellow students, some familiar faces and some not, she settled on one that sent a warmth through her.
"James!" Lark called across the Courtyard and waved her hand in his direction, yelping as she almost dropped her journal and pencil into the snow. Catching them in a flurry of hand movements and knee knocking as she slid from her seat, a pink glow spreading across her face as well as coloring the tips of her silvery locks. Readjusting herself and standing up straight, journal in hand, Lark looked back towards James, eyes shifting from a gold to brilliant emerald green at the sight of her friend.

Bit o' Snow
Thursday Mornings. Double Transfiguration.
James cursed either the spell or staff member who was responsible for laying such a punishment upon him. At the stroke of 11:30 he was about ready to attempt to turn himself into a thimble so as to avoid hearing another lecture about the “Scientific School of Magic” for the remainder of his retched life.
Most of the rest of the Order had other classes on Thursday mornings, and James had made few other friends in the swirling mess that was the first few months at the Magical School, so that when he found himself being mercifully set free from the Transfiguration Classroom, he was alone in the Hogwarts halls. Throngs of students passed him as he meandered, feeling directionless in his freedom. It was barely Midday and his Potions Class wasn’t until 2pm and a breakfast of 7 plump pork sausages had dissuaded any thoughts of an early lunch.
His aimless wandering led him out into the Courtyard, as his mind lingered again on the events of his commencement at Hogwarts. Savannah, His birthday, the fire... it had all tested and shaped him. The few short months may has well have been years... He wondered what seven years would do to him... and unrecognisable man, sauntering away from these halls. ”James!”
His thoughts were cut short by Larks voice cutting through the chaos. She nearly dropped her journal in the suddenness of her movements and James couldn’t help but let out a snort of laughter.
He jogged up to the girl and grabbed her to him in a warm hug.
“Oh am I glad to see you Lark! It was torture... I lost all sense of time and space... I forgot who I was... Whoever came up with the idea of double-Transfig first thing in the morning clearly hated children because I have zero other explanation for it...”

Still clutching her journal, Lark returned her friends hug a small laugh letting loose from her a little bubble of happiness tickling its way up from her stomach to throat making the tips of the young girl's hair turn pink. Pulling back and taking her seat once more she gave a nod. Transfiguration did seem to be the toughest class, at least anyone she talked to agreed to it when brought up. Fascinating subject but the classwork and studying was pretty intense.
"How was it? I know I had trouble with the whole... Reparifarge thing..." The world stumbled off her lips, her accent giving no leeway with some of the different spells they were all taught to learn. "Maybe we'll hafta sit an' go over homework together, compare notes?" She offered her friend a wide grin before reaching up and mussing his brown locks. "Can't have ya fallin' behind an' not graduatin' with us. All for one an' all that." She crossed her arms in her lap over the journal and stared up at James. She couldn't imagine being at Hogwarts without James let alone graduating before him. Nor did she want to think about it.. would Hogwarts even hold back students? She had only heard from of the other Muggleborns talking nervously about just before Winter break and worrying about their term grades.
"Where's your better half?" She teased and looked past James wondering if she would find Gem not too far behind. Truthfully Lark was a bit worried about Gem and after the letters they had shared over break, she wanted to make sure he was doing alright. Not that she wanted to bother James with it, she was sure Gem had confided in him already. Still, Gem had become another integral part of her life much like James.
Scooting over on her stoop, Lark patted the cold stone next to her offering the seat to James. "You finish the homework for Potions?" Lark raised a brow quizzically. Her voice was a mixture of a curious question but also concerned 'mom' tone. "Professor Price will ask for it as soon as we get in y'know." Eyeing James up and down she studied his reaction. At least they had some time so if he hadn't she could help him squeeze it in last minute before they would have to go.
