A Step Toward Violence
Dennis, the now slightly moodier, but no less precocious Ravenclaw third year, was walking to one of his classes with his typical group of friends. Chit chatting and shooting the breeze while they walked. Despite his rather grumpy edgier way of dressing - his shirt not quite buttoned, his robes not as crisply ironed, his hair more disheveled than usual - he was much more the social butterfly this year than previous years. He had a new found ‘devil may care’ attitude about life picking up several unhealthy habits along the way to show just how little he cared. This gave his normally fearlessness and shamelessness a bolder and more exciting expression.
In fact, the topic of the fall ball came up with the group. Everyone having someone to take, talk turned to who Dennis might go with now that he was single. His nonchalant answers were met with dubious looks and soon talk turned to him having no recourse but to ask his ex and grovel at her feet to take him back. He wasn’t about to let that happen. Of course, anyone would be lucky if she managed to say yes to an invitation, but the boy had his pride and was confident he could get a date.
As they passed another group of students one of his friends had the bright idea and teased him to ask someone in that group to the dance. His eyes scanned the group as if he was bored until he found he actually knew one of them. Not only did he know one of them, as luck would have it, he also danced with her! Dennis made the 3 of his friends bet him cold hard silver whether he could get someone in the opposite group to go to the dance with him - he might as well profit, and he would also of course share the proceeds with her as well!
Turning around, he left his group, who were now clinging to the wall and watching very interested. “Violence!” He called, but not loud enough for his friends to realize he knew the person. “Hey! Do you have a moment? I have a question!”

| ℌow was it, that whenever there was a ball, Violence never had a clue who her date was going to be? Last time, it turned out to be- well, better than she had expected. Azzure was everything Vi could have wanted. Her heart dropped, they hadn't communicated since the letters. Letters, which she hadn't gotten any replies to. She'd stopped writing after some time, was Azzure even reading them? Avina snapped her fingers infront of Vi's eyes. "Earth to Vi? Are you thinking about him again? Babe, do you wanna skip class?" Vi took a deep breath and forced a smile, "No, I'm fine. It's over, things end, I need to move on." Vi heard Avina scoff but she chose to stay quiet. Vi was hurting, she just didn't wanna say it. She held her bag tighter as they walked through the corridor. They were heading towards the study room. There was a rush as some students came from the opposite way. "Violence!" Someone from one of the groups called out and Vi's head snapped. Her eyes quickly found the owner of the call. 'Oh, hey, we'd danced together. Although that did get me some pretty deathly looks from who I'm assuming was his girlfriend or ex. The guy was nice though, and I had fun with him.' "Hey! Nice to see you!" Vi smiled. She signalled for Avina to go ahead. "Yes, ofcourse. Shoot!" | ||

A Step Toward Violence
Dennis managed to get Violence attention, who seemed also to be wrapped up in what her friends were discussing, the subject, Dennis had no guess at. Girls truly talk about anything at any time so she could be talking about school, study, but as he drew closer, her expression was weary, before she recognized him. Ah, perhaps they were also talking about relationships. It was that time of year with the fall ball fast approaching! Right, that’s what he was there for anyway. Perhaps he could meet both of their needs at the same time.
“Hey!” He said, flashing his trademark Dennis grin. “I remember we were supposed to catch up after the Spring Soiree but never quite managed it, yeah?” He started, watching as Violence waved her friend away. Well, at least to his own friend group it looked like he successfully singled out someone from the other pack. Little did they know, these two knew each other already.
“I’d love to make good on that, if you’d like. I know it’s a bit late in coming but would you like to go to the fall ball with me? We can dress as pirates and steal a bunch of sh—stuff!” He asked this, his palms face up like he was giving her the most enticing offer imaginable. “Actually, you’d look stunning in such a dress. What do you say?”

| 𝓥iolence smiled politely as Dennis grinned at her. “I remember we were supposed to catch up after the Spring Soiree but never quite managed it, yeah?” "Yes! A lot has happened since then," Violence's voice faded away as she remembered the visits to the hospital turning into letters which slowly just faded away into nothingness. She snapped back to reality and looked at Dennis, "Did you have something in mind?" “I’d love to make good on that, if you’d like. I know it’s a bit late in coming but would you like to go to the fall ball with me? We can dress as pirates and steal a bunch of sh—stuff!” Violence's eyes widened, was he actually asking her to the ball? 'Wow, I was just thinking about the ball and this happens. Do I go? I mean, it's not like I have anyone else to go with.' "Uh-" Violence started speaking but Dennis spoke before her, “Actually, you’d look stunning in such a dress. What do you say?” as he held out his palms for her. Hesitantly, she put her hands in his, "Okay, let's go together. I have to warn you though, my dress is HUGE, so, yeah. One condition though, you tell me who was the girl who was giving me death stares during the Spring ball." She smirked, waiting for his reply. | ||

A Step Toward Violence
Violent seemed to disappear somewhere right before the conversation shifted to the ball. Judging by the smallness of her voice and the distant look in her eyes, perhaps her life wasn’t all sun shines and rainbows. Dennis could relate but probably not in the way he was thinking. However, he didn’t press her and instead forged ahead into asking her out to the ball.
Dennis thought everything was going well. He turned to give his friends a look that said he knew what he was doing. She seemed receptive to his plan. In fact he almost gave his friends a thumbs up but for the fact that the girl he was talking to put her hands in his. He turned to face her. He looked at her hands and then back to her, not bothering to correct her that he was only talking with his hands, he wasn’t asking to hold hers. One does not complain when a pretty girl takes your hands though. He was definitely not about to pull away now.
When she said she would go with him, he grinned his wide Tumberton grin, never one to shy away from joy. In fact, caught up in the elation, Dennis squeezed her hands, and gave her a gentle tug forward, not too much, just enough to move them closer. She asked about his ex and he smiled as his face drew closer to hers. The smile changing from a boyish grin to one that you only smile when you have something mischievous in mind. He pressed his lips on her cheek, paused for a moment and then as he pulled away gave her a sly wink and said, “I guess you’ll have to ask me again at the dance.”
Not waiting for her reply, the Ravenclaw slipped back into his friend group and walked down the hall with the boys clapping him on the shoulders.
